First win on C32.Wait, it's the last cycle? I'd thought there be more. This build went pretty well. I actually had a *very* close encounter with the granganiggers, but the king was BTFO easily.
Okay, I downloaded the fuckin Cataclysm BN, how do I learn to play the game? This shit is ass, why is there so much shit in the crafting menu? Where do I even fucking start?
>>541944928You should have started 10 years ago, before the bloat started piling up to absurd levels
>>541944928Take a basic start in the shelter. Go over and smash a bench to get a board, use the board to smash a locker to get pipes. Go outside and get a non-sharp rock and use it as a hammer to turn the pipe into a makeshift crowbar. Now you can pry open locked doors, and it's a decent starting weapon until you can get a knife spear. Break into some houses at the edge of town, entering from the back door. Unlocked windows and doors are the best, try not to make noise. Gather tools and food and bring them back to the shelter. If anything sees you, toggle run and try to break line-of-sight quickly. If you have to fight, lure zombies through windows or over a bush, it will slow them down and make it harder for them to hit. Pull away if you get grabbed.>why is there so much shit in the crafting menu?Cataclysm has the best crafting system I've ever played, but yeah, there's a ton of stuff in there. Most all of it's useful for something, if only "I need to craft X but don't have the materials, can I make a shitty X substitute?" Shit you can craft with what you have will light up and jump to the top, and you can filter or search, but it's a lot to take in at first, especially if you added a lot of points to skills in chargen.
>>541945310...That's the implicit accusation I was edging towards but fuckYeah, I guess? Damn. Seems fun.>>541945873...Ok, I'll try that. Damn
Got ape unataak pyromaniac of humbaba to workNow on cycle 21 I think. After a few tries of theorycrafting I’ve come up with Ihra Warlock Exultite of Eresh. The idea is to summon as much as possible and do as many separate instances of damage to your summons as often as possible so you can stack inflame. Decided to level willpower and nothing else to like 65 ish then auto level vigor. Got it to astrolith but I zoned out and didn’t pray when I needed to but I’m confident it can workIhra for making all leg armors have no inflexibility (it kills the willpower damage bonus) because kairos skirt is busted for this build but not technically requiredWarlock for more inflame stacksEresh for self-heal and bonus damage on ally death (mass friendly fire incidents incoming)Powers:1 gore tide (ally damage on game turn)4 frostpulse (ally damage on game turn, at least 4 points for 4 tile radius so you can hit most of your summons if they start spawning away from you)1 pyrokinesis (ally damage on kill)1 pyromancy (ally damage on prayer/game turn)1 fire healing (to complement Eresh healing)1 flame cult (fire damage on summon, trigger fire healing)Then dump everything into gore chant which you need to get a horde of bleeding dead sacrifices every game turnFor gear main thing to look out for is kairos skirt because most of the build relies on game turn effects and getting to trigger them every turn and game turn is invaluable on once you get it you’ve likely won the runOther than that the fire staff helps I guess

>>541983301>maybe it scales with difficultyeverything does, good for you for not pussying out of itYeah the Crypt can get you screwed by spawn RNG , but you learn two very important lessons there - 1) Tracking enemies before they see you is OP; 2) Getting teleported/place swapped fucking sucks (you have to counter it with escapes/movement). It is also a very nice source of t4 items that early in the game.
>>541983017I do, and I have fun with it
>>541980489I think it's unusual that in a post starting with calling Tome4 nice, you exclusively have negative and arbitrary things to say. If I was talking about how a game is so fucking nice I'd bring up things I liked about it.
>>541987514>If I was talking about how a game is so fucking nice I'd bring up things I liked about it.That's gay and weak.
>>541987808Why?
>>541983017At least they're not some pervert crafting the "most OP strongestest Adventurer" build.Swap calling that guy out for the Blood of Life and we've got a deal.>>541987808So you just like things unabashedly and with reservation? No fear in your life? Never been hurt before? Think your opinion will improve the game somehow?(It's pretty gay to tell people they're having fun wrong, even if they obviously are)There's no point in swapping tips or talking about "shared experiences" with someone who plays on Extra-Easy with Infinite Lives while using the most powerful endgame equipment from their last 10 runs. You've gotta shape the community to have shared interests and commonality. If that means telling people whose idea of "a good strategy tip" is "just like, press the arrow key to the enemy- It's kind of unfair they can move diagonally, isn't it?" or "I didn't have any trouble after I downloaded the BFG-9000 Doomslayer class mod!!" that they're gay, then so be it.
>>541988582While I agree regarding Extra-Easy difficulty (though here at least the guys playing on Extra-Easy can talk among themselves), and to an extent regarding carrying over endgame equipment, I find myself at odds with the infinite lives comment. A challenge can still be, well, challenging, even if it does not invalidate a 20 hours long run in case of failure. While that's fine in most other roguelikes, in ToME in particular it feels like it goes against its design a little. Especially if it's not actually infinite lives, but a finite resource that you have to find first like the Blood of Life, or even just a limited pool of lives in adventure mode.
>>541988582>>541990118In this context, I don't actually think there needs to be a sanctimonious discussion on the validity or value of having harsh opinions on certain matters or shaping the community in such-and-such way. Rather, I just think it's weird to ostensibly have passion for a game or otherwise think it's great, but to have no comment on the actual game or what you like about it beyond pointing out the things you don't like + that anyone who engages with those parts are gay. It's like a demonstration that one is incapable of having normal interactions anymore and one can only communicate through antagonistic shitposts.
There needs to be some way to make gun combat interesting without dipping into realistic autism.

>>542020993I'm the anon you were first replying to, it wasn't shitposting, and you made a bunch of sense in this thread. I think the game is meant to be enjoyed the most on Insane Roguelike, imho Nightmare is unironically more tedious/difficult due to lack of items early compared to Insane.I just thought everyone knew about ToME4 already to start listing its merits, but here - if I had to choose only one video game to play for the rest of my life this would be it. First time I saw a letsplay of a guy going Bulwark in Trollmire (, I think he died choked by a snake lmao) and I instantly fell for the music and ambience. First game I ever bought, too.
>>542023594>if I had to choose only one video game to play for the rest of my life this would be itDamn. As someone who can't stick to the same game for more than a couple dozen hours (if that) I consider that to be really high praise. Maybe I'll just have to give ToME4 a shot someday.

I like the new AI changes in Quasimorph's beta. The random wageslaves can go into panic once you blow someone's head off and some smarter enemies will hug cover and not move into your killzone. Their nade accuracy has also gone up. Still needs work though because mopping up panicking enemies during defense/control missions is a pain in the butt.
>>542058485Im still waiting for it to hit 1.0 before i start playing. While i like that they are working on it hard i feel like every update adds something completely game changing and i have to start a new save to experience it all.

>>542058485when it released, anons were complaining how it's basically rng if you die from opening a door, how that's bullshit etc. is it fun now?
>>542077210The gameplay of each map is fun.I've seen quite a few opinions (which I share) that engaging with the overall meta-narrative (manipulating each faction's success by completing missions for or against them, doing stock market type stuff with that, getting your items based on which faction you've appeased AND made successful) isn't enjoyable. To me, it's a bit daunting and overcomplicated. There's a dozen or more factions, all with their special interests and unique histories- But figuring out which faction is going to have what gear you want at the very start of the game, alongside the RNG nature of acquiring classes/upgrade materials, is kind of tedious. They've nerfed some of the stuff I found most enjoyable, like abusing energy stance swapping and throwing melee weapons, too. RIP the methed up cannibalistic knife slasher dream
If I want to play DF with the Masterwork mod (assuming it's still around) should I pirate the Steam version and install it that way or just download the free version?I heard that the Steam version is just a baked in tileset and that they lost some functionality by switching the engine to be more "mouse friendly" is that basically accurate? If I'm capable of installing my own tileset (or Masterwork/LNB comes with one) can I just do that with no grief?

Jesus Elin's crafting system is such dog eggs. You think they have enough crafting stations? I got like a dozen fucking tables that all do mostly useless shit but I have no clue if they'll ever come in handy. Dude should have just made some kind of upgrade tree to unlock more stuff that the stations could do.

>>542096973Both sound incredibly fucking ass, thanks.
>>542093359>>542096973Minecraft mods solved this ages ago.You just use process chains instead of recipes. So instead of having ten billion menu entries or stations, you have a few basic operations and build every item by performing them in the correct combination. They also solved the proliferation of item types through material classification and tiers.Instead of your recipe calling for fifteen grade 4 galvanized bolts it uses 14 of any item with [bolting][corrosion resistant] that are tier 4 or above. And you can make tier 4 items in lower tier machines with lower tier materials, it just takes exponentially more resources/longer time.
>>542098920sounds like i've been sleeping on minecraft. i thought it was just some clunky blocky zoomer game
>>542098920Whatever you say about Minecraft being a game for babies (because it is), at its core is a game designed by Notch who is definitely not a complete retard. He knew how to make a crafting system so non-obtuse it could be used in a game that would eventually be turned in to slop for 4 year olds to play on ipads.
>>542099040>zoomerWeird, minecraft is a boomer game.Anyway check out gregtech, it's got a tech tree that goes from literally stone age rubbing sticks together to fusion reactors and interdimensional travel. And each step takes like 50 hours.I think building the stargate took a team of ten people 5 years to complete.
>>542099040It still is a clunky game where children hold down a button to mine a tree. It's the mods that are actually interesting.
>>542077210opening a door is a free action on stealth stance and you have wallhacks similar to crawl antennae mutation when you stand still on walking stance you have 2 actions per "turn" so you can open and then close a door on same turn before anyone else moves so either way its a skill issue and your own fault if you die from itlater on into the game there are some enemies that can 1shot you if you get unlucky but those deaths can be avoided with proper armor and class choice aswell as not being in a situation where they get a drop on you in the first place (grenades without fuse/timer are still bullshit imo)

>>542099040You're half right.Micro$lop is advertising it as that, after they bought it.They've seen fit to let us keep modding the hell out of it, though, in addition to charging children who don't understand the value of a dollar > MS Points > Minecraft Store Coins (or whatever) to put cute little flowers on their heads.Mods are great on their own, you can put in a few that sound nice and even config some to work together. But the real rabbit hole is in getting into modpacks with questlines and the like. Some recent standouts are Oceanblock 2, ATM To The Skies 9/10 and FTB Skies 2. Blightfall in particular is a bit older but still (infrequently) updated to maintain a pseudo parity with a lot of the QoL invented since then- It's a standout 10/10 in terms of narrative progression and mechanics. (I personally also enjoyed FTB Arcanum Institute greatly)You can fiddle together some real neato 'tism factories in most of those, primarily using Mekanism, EnderIO and... RFtools? OriTech is a bit new, but very cool. Grinding ores and processing metals into alloys and using conveyor belts and blast furnaces to automate farms and build your way up to laser transmission systems, energy-matter storage and QuAnTuM bullshit (harness a blackhole for power, 100% safe!!).If you really want to get more into the nitty gritty soul suffering crunch of pseudo-engineering, there's things like Gregtech et al; I'll let anon speak more on that, I can't stand prospecting for ores with a ratty stick and prospecting slurries of actual real world minerals into low quality pig iron (Sevtech Ages was like flattening my penis with a ballpeen hammer, the Dark Age and fighting shadowbeasts and shoggoths was the gayest fucking thing) but it really turns on some hoe-scaring motherfuckers. Not me though. I don't scare the hoes. I just play roguelikes. Which are COOL.
>>542099970>opening a door is a free action on stealth stanceI thought they took that away. Or changed SOMETHING about how swapping stances worked
>>542101960Well, there's RL craft. That's more lul randumb, insta-death than it is "roguelike" butThe nearest thing to an "Actual Game" would probably be Blightfall. It's the only one that comes to mind with an actual handcrafted map, lore, narratives and goals. Some of the others, I guess, technically approach something like that (a lot of them have tons of pre-builts shuffled into the procgen). FTB Arcanum takes places in a "wizard university" but to be honest it's just a (very nice bespoke designer) skyblock in the end.Blightfall is really good. It suffers a bit from kind of expecting you to thoroughly understand some of the higher level gameplay conceits- Half of which were informed by the modding scene at the time, the same way going on 4chan is different from posting in Discord with the homies or loading up a BBS on dial-up with a kazoo -but nothing you can't handle with a wiki and a guide or tips&tricks google doc open.
>>542102634I stopped playing before the update where they added augments and cybernetic limbs so maybe they did. The only thing i know they changed about stances is you cant change them after you've used up one of your moves but that was a while ago.

Any tips for starting ToME4? Beginner-friendly classes, noob traps, things to do or not to do, etc.
>>542104173Most of the stuff you'll learn along the way, but1. Your character starts with 2 infusions (healing, shield, cleanse, etc). These drop and can be customized. Check shops in towns regularly (restock every 10 levels) for better ones.2. Tome is 99% clearing trash mob and 1% actual fighting. If you are on normal just autoexplore and blast normal trash with anything, only turn your brain on when there's an elite or above. there is some setting to create a border around monsters based on their tier3. Game gives too much loot and exp, if you can't fight something run away.4. Any form of utility (escape, status removal) is more useful than raw damage in tome4.
>>5421041735. If you want to apply negative status on enemies, you have to bypass their save. To get 95% chance to apply status, your effective power (say, spellpower when playing arcane class and mindpower when playing mind class) needs to be 20 higher than enemy. So accumulate that stat on your gear, it scales your damage and ensures you can control enemies.
>>542104173You can mod the game to let you pick classes/races without unlocking them, if you like. You should.Cornac/Shadowblade is pretty obvious a pairing. Lets you focus on fundamentals, has a straightforward gameplan (attack from stealth, restealth, stack negative statuses, CC to reset cooldowns and get back into stealth to do it again) and a handful of interesting ways to do it.Pay attention to what stats your weapons scale off of and what bonuses they each give you. +Health goes a long way. When you see "eff" (effective) scores, don't worry too much- The game just has unexplained diminishing returns.Your rune/infusion selection is half your character. Healing, movement and CLEANSING STATUSES are all lifesavers and the game is designed around frequent use. They're cooldowns, not consumables.Stop and read the monster ability card if you care about dying. Some of them are just utter oneshots or brutal setups. This game runs on statuses. Read and understand what stunned (and others) ACTUALLY meansRight click abilities to see about autocasting them, to make sure you don't not use sustains or exploration skills by accident. The game doesn't really open up until you get the Recall Rod (beat the first boss)(any boss, whichever one you beat first)(per character), the Transmogrification Chest (Beat the Trollmire boss)(once, ever) and link it to the Sher'Tul Fortress(your new home base)(SE of Derth)(once)(clear it when you can every run though)(It's a hard area, even if you're on level)On that note, don't forget to check the recommended level for each area. The game locks the area to your level when you first enter it, though, so don't worry about the enemies rescaling if you have to fuck off after finding outR to Rest. Z to Zexplore.

>>542106457While I do agree for the most part, there can also be value in getting a headstart for the first couple of hours, especially in a game as dense as ToME, and it doesn't really invalidate much, if any, of the discovery for the rest of the game.

These are all "initial attacks" too.Pick up any of the Chakrams or the Thunder Blade/Ragna Axe in Void, real funny stuff. >>542048383I agree some skills are a bit more complex, but at the end of the day, it's all about keywords and patterns (procs, stun, movement, resist etc), text gets trimmed a lot if you look at it this way. On the other hand ToME lets you really enjoy the fantasy roleplay element since character designs are so cool.
>>542108081Still upset about StoneshardI really liked the demo which was a straight dungeon crawler. >>542111102I love the chakram AoE, but I don't need "attacks area" on this build. The build activates effects by summoning cultists and ball lightnings, so the chakram doesn't actually help. All the normal enemies die from my initial cultists spawning in. Then ball lightning summon from attacks are my way to deal single target. The weapon I was actually looking for is the pic related Jade Pilum. I just need range and more attacks activated.

>>542113193Sure- I figured the extra attacks to summon more ball lightnings would do well but it makes sense you'd only have a few targets left over usually anyways. Jade Pilum's great, I spent a long time fishing for it for a couple different builds. Something satisfying about that little stream of javelins.I'm absolutely devastated that I somehow fat-fingered my way to the 31st Cycle before starting this run, I almost don't wanna do the write up.Not that anyone who's played for 5 minutes needs it. Your initial build lets you teleport ~3x on standstill, gain meditate and deal 5+ damage instances per standstill. If we score a kill we repeat one teleport and the 2-hit AOE component, ad-infinitum. (Don't You Love Your Mom and Her Two-Hit Multi-Target Attacks?)Blinksnakes per teleport get collateral'd for meditate, healing and armor through our cults and Doom MasteryOnce we find the Crow Visage we repeat our entire kit on kill, instead of one TP+AOE. Teleport 5 times. Summon 30 snakes. Do 90 instances of mixed ranged and AOE damage. Heal to full. Still eat a third of your lifebar in Crow Visage procs. Most of the Astral/Teleport themed prestiges are redundant. Crowform sucks extra hard because it takes our armor, Vineform MIGHT (?) eat it but it's not worth paying the extra self-damage for one piddly damage instance.Ill-Prophet scales better, Destroyer moreso if we had managed Kairos Skirt but I took Starjumper early, this combo is a little shaky to start. No control inside the level, just routing gearing and point allocation. The specific weapon set clears half the later levels on entry by chain destroying our own summons, adding many damage instances to proc meditate. There's a slightly better variant with Stand Ground, instead of Master Doom. Projection LOOKS cool but really isn't. Would've liked Ice GlovesDIs: A lot. We are very religious and couldn't avoid some Revenge mobs on our path. Fawdaa loves teleporting and refills us constantly anyways.
>>542118174>12 game turns passed>Performed 2 attacksSo I accidentally pressed NP_0 instead of standing still like... 4 times. Attacked twice, stepped twice, give or take. Absolute subpar performance.I think Morbumancy and maybe Toxic Dagger here to replace Projection and the Cobra Staff/Serpent Fetish could work out to more single target. Not sure it's strictly better. Maybe just Grave Chant, to double our summon value. >>542172248I think its like two or three overmap tiles wide, wandering hordes would just cross any obstacles, meaning the could technically spawn stuff right in the middle of a big building, the new horde system should make it so that any pre-defined obstacles like rivers, trees, specific buildings or any building the player interacted with or built will make that tile inacessible to hordes

>>542205064removed from worm girl's fork, actually
>>542204402I think it was fixed recently in either DDA or TLG, can't remember which. IIRC someone pointed out how enemies with a reach attack(cunning ferals) can hit diagonally, but players can't even if they use the same weapon the cunning feral dropped. Leading to them fixing it and making reach attacks work diagonally.
>>542206119Diagonal reach attacks do work in TLG, but they're wonky.
>>542205184>some reason The reason is that Bright Nights forked away from DDA years ago, when the anti-fun march was just getting started. Some features that get added to DDA get backported, but the code bases have diverged so it's harder now than it used to be. And since DDA is "the one that everybody plays", it gets the most developer attention, meaning a lot of new stuff goes there, rather than to the forks. BN is the biggest of the forks, though, with a sizable crew of devs working on it.

Hmm.
What would you say is the simplest roguelike that still manages to be fun? Like the one with the simplest character abilities, simplest enemies, simpliest dungeon, etc, that is still fun and worth playing. The most basic possible roguelike, in a snese.
>>542232063i think that really hinges on your definition of roguelike. some will say if its too easy its not a roguelike at all, or if its missing some arbitrary component its not a roguelikei would say maybe barony would be the simplest in my eyes. its not difficult to learn most base mechanics and memorize most items. plus it has a built in compendium. but once again, i think most here would not consider it a roguelike for the simple fact its not turn based
>>542232063Maybe one of the many 7 day roguelikes? Here, check out Orcish Fury, recommended by an anon a couple threads back. Sort of a Grendel simulator. I enjoyed it.https://redxaxder.itch.io/7drl2022

I'm not liking it bros. With the Rescue Crystals, it feels like the game encourages you to treat it more like an extraction game than an actual Mystery Dungeon since you can just bail out of the run at any time and keep all of your items (and then come back again on another attempt after stocking items). >"but you can just not use a Rescue Crystal"This is not justification or an excuse
>>542244623Forgot pic related.
>>542244623If you keep using it like that, then that's on you and not the game's fault. If the game is giving you a tool that you CAN use but isn't forcing you to use it, you are the one with no self control that instantly uses it to bail out and keep the items. It's like saying One Way Heroics is shit because you can keep some items for future runs, even when the game clearly tells you that is a crutch, or saying DCSS is shit because you can use Wizard mode at any point, even if the game stops "counting" after that. You're the one using those crutches, you are the one that should take accountability for them.
>>542251117>If you keep using it like that, then that's on you and not the game's fault. The game literally gives you an increasing percentage chance of an enemy dropping a Rescue Crystal when you have 0 in your inventory as an insurance policy. What am I supposed to do with it?
>>542181274In Jupiter Hell Classic (when there are no enemies visible) you can hold the A button while changing directions with the left stick - you auto-move very fast.
>>542251117I bet you think infinite shop scumming in Qud is fine too. It's supposed to be fun to figure out the optimal way to play the game. If the optimal way to play the game makes it substantially less fun, then the game suffers for it. It is the developer's job to set reasonable guard rails that keep the player at a reasonable level of challenge and interest without thinking about it, and if the player has to create those guard rails themselves to avoid ruining their own experience then the developer has failed.
>>542251659Not use it, you dunce.>>542253719The fuck are you talking about? I'm literally saying if you abuse the game's mechanics and later come to say shit like "BUT THE GAME MADE ME DO IT!!" then you're creating your own personal hell.

>>542254713>abuse the game's mechanics How is using something the game is designed around "abusing the mechanic"? >>542260740Don't worry, it's balanced because Sandblast takes 1.5 turns to cast now :)If you think that's too OP you can just hit things with your bare hands until you find rocks to use as ammo>>542260434If the game design space is warped by the inclusion of mechanics like that, you can't undo it.
>>542260434Long gone are the days of people playing MuMo, huh...>>542261017Because you're choosing to literally end the run at that moment, not the game. The game isn't forcing your hand in using the item, it's there if you want to bail out like the sissy la-la prancing homo man you are.
>>542260740You're gonna have an aneurysm once you discover the trunk version has no space limit for consumables.I personally feel it's fine, I don't mind having less shit to manage and I don't mind playing the cumbersome versions where you had to butcher shit to survive and then carry 50 pieces of bread for extended since you can't butcher shit in there. It's just a question of how much you want your experience to be streamlined, and as someone without infinite time in the day I'm ok with having it somewhat streamlined.
>>542214024Well, Lugonu was pretty good about eating any penance summons (and even managed to slurp up half a huge orc pack on D:12 along with the demons) but they couldn't do anything about all these boots to the face I kept catching.I'd say "I got too low entering Lair but this motherfucker hit me three times in a row with penance; I was only that low because Makhleb hit me with a destruction barely ten turns earlier that carved off half my health"I don't know why I thought that penance would avoid outright killing you- Summon monsters on me, teleport me to melee range, corrode my gear, whatever the theme is, just don't deal 2 HP unavoidable damage to me on 1 HP.
>>542261675>versions where you had to butcher shit to survive and then carry 50 pieces of bread for extended since you can't butcher shit in thereI mean I get why you might want to streamline this stuff, but it was fun... So was having multiple different kinds of food...
>>542261165>Because you're choosing to literally end the run at that moment, not the game.If I'm in a sticky situation during a run and my options are...1) Die and retain nothing2) Escape and retain everything And the game is literally giving me the item to do so, then why should I not use it and tailor playing the game around it? Why should I choose the better option in a genre designed around risk and resource management?
>>542265052Because you ended up in that situation in the first place by playing poorly and not asessing your situation with more time to think on how to get out of it without using the "forfeit the run and keep your shit" card. You're the one crying about having to use it when it's literally not obligatory to do so. I'm just gonna stop replying to your low tier bait anymore.
>>542263110I like to play the older versions from time to time. "Just don't use the powerful tools given you to" retards are the lowest of the low. We're playing another person's game; we're not making a game for ourselves. There is a blatant feeling of artificialness and hollowness that comes from self-limiting oneself. Victory for many is less satisfying if they knew they were just arbitrarily making it harder for oneselves. How notable would climbing Mount Everest be if there were an elevator to the top and one simply had to choose not to use it? It wouldn't be notable at all. Nobody cares if you ignored the elevator or not; it exists and so the climb is not notable. The real joy is when a challenge is so hard you have to go all-out to win. Therefore a supposedly hard or punishing game including items which make it easy and not punishing are spoiling themselves regardless of whether a player self-restricts or not.
>>542302871>>542302335So you only play MiBe and only go for three runes?
>>541994084Realistic autism is fine, just add some bonus max upgrade that does something unique to weapons like in re:4Doomrl is excellent. More people should play aliensRL too.
>>542303203You're mistaking the nuances of tactical gameplay with base game settings/goals. There's a big difference between choosing the settings that will give one the easiest time for winning in a certain way, and an ever-present option that makes the entire game easier no matter what you do. If there was a setting in the menu to turn off the crystal, and "Crystal-less runs" were a canon game setting akin to hard vs easy mode, that would be fine.
>>542303203MiEn no scrolls no quaff no training stealth no randart or fixedart 15-rune can't pick up books no worship don't train evo one-hand no shield punch myself in the dick if I ever use a throwable (it doesn't count unless it bleeds) streak or bustIf I ever die in the game I plan to uninstall the game and never download it again.
>>541942670So, I'm playing Cataclysm (The Last Generation), and I'm getting real sick of the inventory rat nest caused by the player character shoving junk into every available package inside the inventory. I just started a new game and gathered up the protein bars in the shelter to deposit in one place, only to find that my character had gone and shoved TWELVE of the protein bars, still in wrapper, inside of another wrapper alongside its protein bar. This is just too retarded to bear any more. (inb4 just play BN, no. I actually like the idea of pockets and don't want to live without them, I just hate their shoddy, botched implementation.)So, the solution that I thought up: Make it to where EVERY Container-category item pocket's auto pickup is set to FALSE by default. This makes the most sense to me. IRL, people wouldn't bother refilling an empty container with random garbage, if they wanted to put things in a container it would be intentional. If I wanted to use a (w)ielded bag to put loot in, all I would need to do is set its autopickup back on. This is much less tedious than the inverse; needing to set every container in my inventory to not have random crap shoved into it. This simple change would solve 90% of the problems that I have with the pockets system. The problem: How in the world do I do it? I've scoured the internet, the included documentation, the game files, but so far I haven't had any luck. There has to be a variable for pocket auto pickup and unload SOMEWHERE, I just can't FIND the stupid thing. If I just knew that, then it seems like it would be pretty easy to just follow the directions to make a mod or modify the game files themselves. Anyone here with Cata dev/modding experience that could point me in the right direction?
>Achra run going great>Robak, the one boss that would absolutely fuck me, is the boss I getHMMMM
>>542302871This is an extremely reductive position given that many games in the roguelike genre have items, abilities and class choices that are specifically intended as a soft difficulty selection system, where you can choose to start as a naked bum with a stick or a demigod
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAAq-iogB5Q
>>542309567Again, that mistakes base settings for mid-game tactics. Nobody is saying that the existence of a minotaur means that the entire game is impacted. One opts-in to playing minotaur and if they don't play minotaur it has no impact on the run. However, there is no opt-in or opt-out for the crystal; it forces itself into your inventory and is simply party of the game. Thus, we're talking about a fundamental gameplay mechanic that is omnipresent throughout a run no matter what settings one chooses. If a roguelike had a spell called "kill every enemy in the dungeon" that was intended as a "soft easy mode; if you want you can kill every enemy and win instantly," then we would all understand that's significantly different from having an easier class, and that it would be absurd to tell players "uh just dont use the spell that lets you instantly win if you want to play the game." Furthermore, if a game has overpowered items mid-run, the end result of that is not a "soft difficulty select," that just means the game is easier. There is no reductiveness here; it's just a fact that from a game-orientated perspective, if a game has easy options for winning easily then the game is easy. The player can choose to make the game harder if they want, but that's true for any game. A player might as well blindfold themselves and do that absurd MiEn challenge run someone else described. But nobody would mistake that as the game itself being hard. And finally, it is not up to the player to modulate difficulty for themselves in this way. If a normal player opens the game, gets a bunch of easy options, then wins easily, their conclusion is that they didn't have fun and the game was easy. It is not up to them to modulate their experience and ban options or whatever to try and craft a more fun experience for themselves. They CAN, if they want, but they are not beholden to do so, and it's the job of the developers to make the fun game with balanced options.

>>542305935>pocket auto pickup and unloadthe easy way is to set priority. for example, you might want to set a low priority for your belt but a high priority for your backpack, so that all the stuff you hoard is put in your pack first. or just disable auto pickup into things like pants pockets and belts, manually put things in there. then you can use the dump command to dump what's in your backpack while keeping things in your other pockets. or just drop your backpack and pick up another one, come back to pick the pack up later.you can do something like this with favorites in BN, but it's a little less flexible. if you spend the time to set up your equipment you get an appreciation for how fun and nice pockets actually are.

>>542312196The problem is inventory management. It's incredibly annoying to have to dig crap out of a matryoshka doll of nested inventories. It turns the inventory into a cluttered mess. In an ideal world, my inventory would look like this after picking up a stack of paper wrapper > protein bar:*12 paper wrappers > protein barNice, neat, simple. One line, one stack of items. Perfection. But instead, it looks like the monumentally retarded clusterfuck in picrelated. You see the 2nd entry in the list there? That's actually inside the FOURTH entry. The THIRD entry is inside the first entry. This is actual flaming dogshit. So far as I can see, there is zero reason for any containers to ever have anything put back into them unless the user intentionally wants to do so for a specific reason. I frankly don't care if I lose some .5L of inventory space because I'm carrying a half empty cereal box in my backpack that has just enough room for me to fit a tuna can, a pencil, and a handful of scrambled eggs into or whatever. I want my inventory to be neat, organized, and easily readable.Anyways, I tried fiddling with it some. I tried putting "auto_insert": false into the "pocket_data" field but no dice. It accepts the change just fine but it doesn't do anything at all, the behavior remains the same. I'll keep searching in the meantime. I hope I don't have to go mucking around in the actual source code to change this behavior.

>>542335819It's bizarre that it's this important to you. It's plenty accurate and describes the genre perfectly well. The confusion between "a roguelike" and "roguelike gameplay elements" is natural and understandable. Introducing "roguelite" only makes sense from a traditional roguelike player's perspective- You have to first explain what a roguelike is and then tell the prospective listener that a roguelite um ackshually isn't that.People have lives, man. You're lucky to get them to sit through "Oh, roguelikes? So there was this pretty tough game called Rogue, if you died you had to restart the run and it was random every time"And that's like... >>542343598I'd say that Stone Soup (which requires no thinking or planning ahead, and where the challenges are basically the same every time) is more of a roguelike than Crusader Kings 2 (which has no grid).

>>542347670...How long have you been playing DCSS and how many wins do you have?
>>542343598Although the argument you put forth has a charm in how it presents itself as caring about "the things that really matter," while framing other things as not that important, the other anon (somewhat crudely) identifies accurately that many games that are not like Rogue whatsoever have those "more important" qualities you identify. Planning ahead, adapting to constraints, etc is very common across gaming as a whole - I could point to, for example, Left 4 Dead or Helldivers 2 as games which require planning ahead, adapting, different challenges, etc.Although it is not very glamorous or charming as an argument, the grid actually is rather important as a unifying aspect of roguelikes. If you get too abstract and philosophical, leaving core game constructions behind, then you end up with games nothing like Rogue, and most importantly, with games that the traditional roguelike community is not gathering together to play and make.
>>542348267First game in 2008, last played in 2021, one win in 2011
>>542348840...I think if you planned ahead more you would have more wins
It's too bad that indie devs decided "roguelike" was a better term than "run-based gameplay" for the thing that they actually share in common. I don't really care about classifying games that much to get into autistic arguments about it, but it does seem that the idea of starting a new run with a new character is the gameplay element that they're actually referring in a lot of these newer games. So just call it what it is: run-based gameplay.
>>542348143Simulturn fag did nothing wrong
>>542348143Is it really "simul"turn if the turns are not actually simultaneous but either player-first (you move, everything else moves) or determined by internal speed/initiative calculation (you commit an action and everything plays out sorted by speed/initiative) and not actually truly simultaneous (everything occurs at the same exact time)?
>>542349934Well, that and (alleged) mechanical complexity and (allegedly) high difficulty and the "spirit of discovery" (unlocking items that drop randomly as substitute for spoiler-heavy design).Kind of like how roguelikes do :)>>542351071We've tried explaining that. Multiple times. With plenty of exhaustive explanations of how different time/energy systems can work."But it looks simultaneous because the little icons on the screen all change at the same time as when I pressa da button"Brother would not survive in a still-ASCII-based environment, his brain cannot handle the level of abstraction necessary.
>>542351071Doesn't matter, it's about how the game feels to play, not how it works under the hood.
>>542348143I feel like "atomic turns" would be a better description. Rather than a system like X-Com, where a "turn" means moving a dozen different guys, a roguelike turn is the smallest possible increment of time where you can take an action. One move, one attack, one use of an item.
Still playing Quasimorph beta. The class reworks seem to have added 2 kinds of safety nets. First is an AP injector, getting a panic AP boost so you don't get instarekt by pain shock. triggers are enemy missed attack, being wounded, reaching the pain threshold from what I've seen. Second is a stun bomb like effect. Basically variations of the existing War Crimes class perk. Ex. Tunnel rats get Dirty Shot which spreads a stun on Crit. What's a bit weird is that phoenix brigade seems to lean in 2 directions rather than the obvious I love Fire class. It's because the burn everything perk Pyromania is with the new Class Tongkong instead. So you can play them as a battery weapon specialist and not use any fire at all and run cold/shock guns instead.
>>542356273>atomic turnsPretty good, actually

>>542353163It feels like I make an action and then, depending on how fast the enemies and allies are, they or I take a turn in sequence.I think it feels this way to most everyone with a brain. It looks that way at first but... A veteran player knows that that's wrong and a neophyte is only confused and hindered if that's anchored in their mind. I feel like this is some primacy bias. Just because this is how you were introduced to it or something, you've seized on it.>>542356273It's closer to describing the situation, sure. If we were doing quantum science, I'd applaud it even. If you're discussing TraDItiOnaL RoGueLIkeS irl just go "Ah, nah, it's not like that, you control one character, stepping one tile is like one turn" and then, y'know- Get on with your life. Nobody needs the excruciating elucidation of every facet of a genre shoved down their throat when they are not "at the computer"Imagine trying to autistically describe fucking Apex Legends or some other extraction shooter to someone who had never heard of them like this. Getting hung up on what the difference between a gun and an item is, or how Tarkov lets you keep things but Apex is more like a MOBA: Multiplayer Online Battle Arena- Not an ASSFAGGOTS: Aeon of Strife Styled Fortress Assault Game Going On Two Sides, because that'd be like, Aeon of Strife and the term Aeon-of-Strife-Style actually means-(It is at this point you notice the person you're talking at is trying to gnaw their own leg off like a trapped fox, because you've just crit them with a wall of text in real life)

In fact, none of life actually synergised with what I was doing other than vineform. It was pretty much a bootleg Topheth
>>542368359>master doom buildCongrats. That build sounds awful. I guess you at least get a bazillion armor with your stacks.
>>542362767I didn't really feel like I was doing so hot with Forgecraft till I got Battlesphere/Magic Dart (since that's a Forgecraft now) and Hoarfrost Cannonade- That combos nicely with Inner Fire, but that's about it, still kind of a scramble to use. Lightning Spire never quite felt worth it, but that bee is a menace and I found myself happy to tank hits to initially wind it often enough.Too often I was panic swapping with Blazeheart and just repeatedly letting him detonate as a poor man's Fulminant, limited utility outside of corridors. On the other hand, triggering 3x3 fire explosions every other turn is very strong and better than FP if you can get it to go off. I think lucking into Hellfire Cannon and then Servitor is nearly mandatory. Hellfire Cannon will nearly beat the damn game for you, though- It's certainly capable of clearing 3-rune nearly all by itself.>>542362878The number of times recently that I've read a TP and ended up basically on the same damn screen, 3 tiles away, is ludicrous
>>542367314Climb a roof and throw rocks
>>542370768Master doom is really strong if you can get a bajillion summons, which isn't too hard in itself. As long as you get the chance to stack it a bit things will just kill themselves attacking you. This specific master doom build sucks, but that's because arsonist sucks
>>542368359This really is a build of all time
Every CDDA discussion is like "how many eunuchs will it take to change a light bulb"
What would be better to enchant to max, an Crystal Pate Armor or a Goden dragon Scales? Mind you, I only have rF and rElec on my rings, so I'm incined to go the dragon scales route.
>>542362767I've found that paying it as a support of my melee damage is way better than trying to play it as a pseudosummoner, or at least for me.I was under the same connundrum as you, and then I started just using the first 4 spells only one at the time depending on their level to just aid my melee sometimes and it suddenly worked out. Grapnel to help me kill the 1st floor popcorn, Spikes to help me deal with adders and gnolls in the 2nd one and the Bee to deal with absolutely everything up until Lair, and after that Golem to deal with packs since it explodes. And whenever I replaced one spell for the other, I never bothered to use it again. It was like rotating between minions, and the best one I ended up getting was Animate Armor, that one with Percussive Tempering can solo a bunch of shit in the game, depending on the armor you're wearing (but even some fire dragon scales are good and can do some insane damage).I'm not sure if I should try to use other spells after those. Monarch looks cool on paper, but if you're not playing a pure caster or a worshipper of Sif, you're gonna drain your MP in 2 or 3 casts, since it costs 6 to summon it and 6 to detonate. Fortress Blast and the Beetle are probably the most I'll get since they scale with my armor are are fairly easy to cast.I'll try to get Hellfire Mortar online, just because that one seems to stick for a longer time on the battlefield, so it's probably better on the MP economy.
>>542382628Golden Dragon Scales of course. Crystal Plate is a meme that is almost never worth using unless you find it early on a character that doesn't care about the downsides.
>>542384838Adding to this, the Lightning Spire is pretty good if you can level up your Air Magic, and even with low investment it can wipe packs and high level mobs with a Tempering buff, and going the caster route with Monarchbombing doesn't sound too bad, since if you cast itearly in the fight you can fill the whole screen with bombs so monsters can't reach you, then you cast a couple of other spells with your Battlesphere or Servitor on, and the detonate the bombs once you're all set.
>>542385939Guess you're right, I really wanted to use the CPA since it was enchanted and had rPois, but I haven't found enough resistances in other equipment to justify it.
>>542387029The game just ain't balanced. Characters that can wear Golden Dragon Scales usually will wear Golden Dragon Scales. Get used to it. Team LGBT isn't going to balance that shit when they could create a dozen new artefacts that show up 1 in 100 games and take up your hand, boot, and cockholster armor slots.
>>542232063Overworldit's the best Android game at the same time tooI'm amazed how good it is and it's still frequently tuned and updated, I play it during every break, including shit break at my shit job
>>542389217>it's the best Android gameYou have DCSS and Shattered Pixel Dungeon on Android...
>>542389374I don't like dcss controls on android and I'd need at least 10 inches screen to feel comfortable, pixel dungeon is the goat, especially shattered (used to be), but I just got bored of itoverworld is the perfect brief roguelike to win-streak with much more variety and I like how unique it is while beong very traditional at the same timeand its free, which is rare nowadays
>>542370768>>542374681Is it really that bad? Master doom is the only way I've been able to make mass summoning actually work.
>>542390369Well there is an inherent problem in dealing damage by letting enemies hit you because one application of scorch can instantly fucking kill you on cycle 32. But if you can get tanky enough to take hits and also find a way to remove status effects, then sure, it can work. There is a prestige class that is specifically designed around putting negative effects on yourself actually.
>>542212635>BN is the biggest of the forksDon't tell that to worm girl, she's convinced TLG is the biggest one out there. "Hundreds of thousands of lines of code changed" btw actually few thousand lines at best, rest is jsons and ports.
>>542395457>Well there is an inherent problem in dealing damage by letting enemies hit you because one application of scorch can instantly fucking kill you on cycle 32.Oh, I wasn't intentionally letting enemies hit me until KoMC. The majority of my damage was insane attack damage + multiple attacks by stacking inflame with golden spear + garnet necklace + skiagh with my summoning prayers then proccing frenzied chant for the attacks.Master Doom was necessary so that when I did get I didn't fucking explode immediately (because of the armour). Then I realised that it dealt a bunch of damage itself, which was just a bonus. It was essential during the king because when I attacked his debuffs and retaliation were hitting me for more than I was hitting him for.
Forgive me for what may be a hasty judgement, but is it just me or is Path of Achra extremely zoomer core? Since all the powers are passive you just kind of plug out your build and then mash tab while things explode. I feel like I'm getting a sensory overload here.
shut the fuck up
>>542367314just leave?
>>542399480Are you on cycle 1? You can definitely tab through the early cycles mindlessly, but a lot of the enemies have conditional powers that you have to play around when the difficulty ramps up. Either you don't go to levels that counter your build, or you avoid doing the action that buffs them. Sometimes you can change items to counter a specific level too.For instance, you NEED Scorch immunity or removal on any level with Fire Priests or Fire Lizards because Scorch can send you to the game over screen instantly if you have a few hundred stacks. And you don't want to move on any level with Tracking enemies because you will give them 80 stacks of inflame for every step you take (just sit still and wait for them to come instead). Revenge is another one to watch out for, because you'll AoE down a pack of enemies and give the big green guy twelve free attacks, one for each enemy you killed. But like if you're on cycle 1 then the mechanics don't actually punish you much so you can just play around with whatever you want and learn the game.
>>542367314Starting out in TLG is just savescum city, there's way too great a chance of turning a corner and finding something that will just kill you, or cripple you so badly that you'll never make it back to hidey hole, you can barely fucking outrun shambling fat zombies if you're healthy. And you can't just not go in to town looting all the time because there's like a 5% chance that any given kitchen will have anything in it other than rotten milk and half empty bottles of condiments. A fucking bag of flour is a huge win because it means another day you can spend training, crafting, and building instead of playing russian roulette with 4 in the cylinder.
>>542408009>savescum citysir this is a roguelike general
>>542397518does TLG have ascention
>>542408709Honestly what's the difference between savescumming 100 times and just rerolling 10,000 times to get the one run where you don't get fucked by some RNG threat like opening a door with a feral axe murderer or prepper with a gun behind it in your first 5 days when you're lucky if you've managed to cobble together a makeshift knife spear?
>>542408986>honestly what's the difference between using cheats and just rerolling 10000 times to get that god run where you would be effectively immortal anyway
>>542408986are you really dying to a single axe murderer or prepper on day 5?maybe TLG is on another level of difficulty from bn/dda
>Play dwarf fortress adventure>Really enjoy in depth character trait system>Hate the fact npc's say everything in nearly the same way>Hate the fact your dialogue is limited, no way to word anything>Basically only difference in choosing companions based on personality is to have people who don't run away in a fight>every other rougelike is even more lacking in this departmentIs there a open-world rougelike out there with super in-depth character simulation and proper dialogue systems? I feel like an aspect sorely missed in the current market is one of these
>>542409236Why are you willfully misinterpreting what I said? It's instant, guaranteed death just because you opened a regular door in a regular house. You can make a character who is unencumbered, with athlete background, athletics 3, athlete's form proficiency, and you can't run for more than a screen or effectively get away from a feral human enemy unless you have a dense forest to run in to and lose them.>>542409263I played one game of bright nights and stopped because all the UI features were really primitive and shitty, and the one game of DDA I played I walked out of the evac shelter and immediately found a dead soldier fully kitted out in gear that wasn't even filthy, with a loaded M4 in his dead hands.
>>542409793>Why are you willfully misinterpreting what I said?Am I though? It's exactly the same sentiment, if maybe slightly exaggerated.
>>542409793i played one game of tlg, it felt like there was a lot more loot than dda with no hope on its recommended settings.main thing that stuck out was that zombies break chainlink very easily in tlg
>>542410204also, pulping takes an eternity (5min?). but that might be a change even in dda now.
>>542410204I can't really say how much loot there is in DDA with no hope or whatever, but in TLG I'd say around 95% (not an exaggeration, like about 19/20) are pre-looted of everything but books and you'll only find odds and ends. Non-perishable food? Forget about it. If you check enough houses mayble you'll stumble on that one unlooted house that has a few cans of spam and a box of cereal left, but chances are you'll run in to a feral who outclasses you in every way first.
>>542410915yeah that's standard. the main way i got food was by cooking or smoking meat. places like pizzerias might have flour.i'll play some tlg, sounds all right.
>>542409793>you can't run for more than a screenBN, you're not automatically an asthmatic there.
>>542414009Yeah it's a shame it's like playing cataclysm from ten years ago and also it swings completely the opposite way and seems far too easy
>>542411345anon plays TLG:>default world>custom character, point buy, surrounded, survivorpoint buy seems pretty generous. they got rid of most of the best traits like fast walker, quick, fast learner. i took tough and fast metabolism.background system got nerfed hard. only a couple dozen choices, it used to be a great place to pick skills.you can still pick drugs, but those only give you points for skills, you can't raise your stats or add traits with them. I generally like the system - stuff like skills was never worth spending points on when the alternative was +1 to an attribute.something a new guy might not notice - some valuable recipes aren't given anymore by starting with specific skills. used to that taking, i think it was tailoring 3?, at character creation meant you learned how to make plated leather armor. otherwise you'll need a book to learn how to do that. well, if it's in TLG.started in a large city, zombies all over. immediately ran into a cunning feral, but some parkour got me safely to the next building. I found a safe enough spot in a nearby building, grabbed a kitchen knife, and set up in a corner. Three ferals came for me but I lost the cunning feral.Come nightfall, I made my escape. Luckily, the refugee center I spotted on the map had a friendly there. He'll sell me a pistol for $35 worth of junk. >foodI found enough food in 1 house to feed me for a couple days. and there's days more in just protein bars at this shelter. >loot scarcityfeels noticeably higher than default no hope. i found a sewing kit, a hammer, a half-full first-aid kit, pliers, loads of clothing like a jean jacket and combat boots, several mostly working cars, all just walking through two houses. and a friendly evac shelter with another first-aid kit.>populationnoticeably higher mutant and variant population. >combatfeels a bit more forgiving. I don't think I'd be okay fighting 3 ferals and 5 zombies on a baseline survivor in dda.
Is Yu an unplayable god at higher cycles? Getting speed diffed by any enemy whatsoever feels like an immediate death sentence. Anything that gets +cycle to their speed gets infinite attacks against you before you can do whatever stacking nonsense you're planning
>>542422512so... i guess the shelters no longer have solar panels
>>542424572Nope, the computer consoles stay lit up by magic I guess.
>>542424572>>542425765Weird changeDDA still has them despite getting rid of the computer consoles
>>542384838I cannot glaze Hellfire Mortar enough. Not only does it put down a line of lava (skies the limit when you can drop an entire line of blocking terrain, doubly so if you get fly) it shoots TWICE per turn and it's 50/50 fire resist bypass. Oh. And it splits open any walls that aren't extra-hard. Throw it down in a 1-tile choke. Hop across it with flying to kite melees. Jump out of a bad situation and seal up the entrance behind you. Breach difficult rooms with your own Doorkicker Cannon, without going near the doors. This spell makes me feel human again. But also, yeah, I don't think Forge is meant to go zoo summoner- But I think most of the school is better suited to full caster, with spellspark, battlesphere and longlasting emplacements like mortar/cannonade. By the same token, Diamond Sawblades DO shred and Rending, Alembic and Beetle Blast are cute support pickups for a tankier smack em dude- I just question the ideal of getting, say, Phalanx Beetle to sub 10% failure for something like +5 AC while also wearing reasonable armor. I guess that mostly bridges the gap for Fortress Blast, etc- Because you're wearing lighter armor and training XP into spellcasting/forgecraft, maybe it makes up some of the difference between Storm Dragon or whatever you wear instead.Let us know if you get Platinum Paragon castable in a reasonable build, though, that thing looks sick....What I really wonder is if the Forgecraft start is even fucking worth it?? By the time you're doing 3-runes... Despite how great the Bee is, the only thing from your starting book you MIGHT still be using is the Blazeheart. Grapnel's accuracy can't really be improved (and surely you've got better things to cast than fishing for a hit on a weapon skill you're already training) and all of the late game Forgecraft skills want you heavily multispecced in Conjurations/Fire/Earth/Ice anyways. Grapnel and Spike make me wish for the days of poking across a single cloud with a spear on a Mummy.
very funny crawl devs, very funny
>>542432596Unfortunately I splatted yesterday playing while drinking. I should really stop doing that, I've been splatting while driving drunk for a couple of weeks already, not because I drink every day, but because I play for a couple of hours during the week and on most saturdays I go to drink with some homies, come back and feel emboldened enough to finish the run, and then I make a shitload of bad decisions and die.All that being said, I'm gonna start a new run and see if I can get Platinum Paragon online this time.
>>542423218It's possible to win using him. Though I think Yu has a very limited amount of builds possible compared to some other gods
>>542423218You genuinely try to path around them- But no, he's pretty decent. Allies, strong form-stack chains, just instantly massively buffing yourself- Things with high speed on the cycle can only have +accuracy OR +damage on the cycle as well and you try to play around their abilities otherwise. These runs, left to right, were focused on Putting out a retarded amount of freeze (it's not Anqarak but it works) and massive screening minion wavesStacking Repulsion (and Poise) to an obscene level, thus pumping Armor/Dodge/Block all to ridiculous levels via some conversion and added stack effectsAnd doing.... Uh... Oh- Fuck, that was redeal conversion on the Pierce damage from (Master) Entangle which DOES double dip Willpower bonuses i.e. With 50 willpower (6x mult) a 100 pierce hit with 50% redeal is 600 pierce + (300 x 6) = 24x damage. If I recall, I kept Blood Familiar in my pocket in case KOMC got frisky- I ended up not needing them, I think, so I was entering the last level with 40 glory burning a hole in my pocket. Entangle reduces speed like Freeze does, too.(Earlier in the (last?) thread I write up a build where I tried to make Yu/Arborus work and a different KOMC would've seen a victory; Usually Arborus is played with another form so that you only stay in Arborus till the game turn instead of locking in at 1 speed)Go ahead and go through these builds, pull em up in the armory/powers section if anything's unfamiliar. Even on the lower cycle (by far the least focused build here)(Holy shit Apostle? Am I retarded??) I was huffing vigor like spray paint- Between 12-15k life should keep you safe from most one-shots in Cycle 32 on any build.Yu is about stacking effects real high and making the enemy really fucking regret hitting you. And throwing out a fistful of minions to screen for you, imo.
>>542432785"You retard, you could've picked any other class, haha"I swear they fuckin do it on porpoise, bros.
>>541942670It's no exaggeration to say DCSS is the only thing I care about in life. I find no pleasure in anything else. I constantly think about playing it I play it on my phone at work. Seeing friends doesn't matter to me. Going on a vacation I don't care. Drugs and alcohol I don't care I feel nothing. Loving family I don't feel a single thing. I just wanna get the orb of zot
>>542442824>Me but with everything>(I am clinically depressed and have untreated ADHD and was raised by distant parents and had my health oneshot by two different mold-filled apartments in a row, followed by crippling back, knee and shoulder injuries)Now either put on a dress and dance for me or post your fucking DCSS runs, faggot.
>>542424572>anon plays TLG continuedfirst place i checked, an almost working car - insane, all i need to do is replace the seat (mech 2 to pick one up) and i have a car with a bunch of gas, working battery, all its wheels in place. there weren't even any zombies here.refugee center is also really close. i can just walk there the next day and buy a wrench.>next dayi set out to do just that. but along the way i found a completely undefended gun shop stocked with about twenty guns, an aim teaching kit, loads of accessories, so i grabbed all that and doubled back to trade it for the 9mm pistol and ammo the guy back at base was selling. dropped by the mining outpost not far, checking if maybe they had an angular wrench. nope.spent the rest of the second day getting tailoring and then fabrication up to 4. but it turns out you can't make scrap armor. >next dayheaded out to the refugee center. cleared a police stop and a sugar house along the way. Then I found a fully working car - just fucking walked into it and it turned on and drove - and then found an armored car, with two working turrets, just needed a battery. i thought anon said all the cars were smashed?ran into a bunch of slimes along the way - on this tileset they are hard to see. got my legs badly mauled, especially since they somehow got into the car. These cars I couldn't bring back to base because there wasn't a road back, i had cut through a forest. So, i just walked with my 5% legs all the way home. the big issue is that i forgot to change my footwear, so i was in sneakers and those slimes did nothing but hit my feet.>next daycooked some wildlife and grinded mechanics up to level 2 by crafting 150 pipecleaners. fixed the car near base.it's the evening of day 4 and i have a secure base, guns, ammo, food for days. missing power.I spent all my character creation points to get barbaran montante and strength... but i can't craft maces or any weapon that uses it other than, i guess, a zweitimber.
>>542446332Didn't think I'd see the gay ADHD excuse brought up on 4chan of all places
Ahhhh how do I put stuff in this trash can to carry it I'm going crazy ahhh / is dogshit \ doesn't fucking do anything, this building is on fire what the fuck ahhhh you tricked me anon I thought this game was easy hellllp meeee
>>542453315>how do i put a crowbar into a tiny fucking plastic trashcanit doesn't fit
>>54245442620 LITERS, TOMIT'S a 20 LITER TRASHCAN.Why can't I put the splinters in it? A crowbar would stick out the top of a fucking basket easily! I'll carry a dozen crowbars in a 20 liter trashcan! It'll be fucking easy!
>>542455314yeah that's weird. you used the construction menu to simple-deconstruct a trash can, and then picked that up, right?it's bugged, then. it doesn't even show up for me in organize contents (i -> i) as something you can put stuff into.despite having information about carry capacity that indicate it should be able to hold things.
>>542456108Of course it's bugged.Ah well. I tried reading a survivor's map and the game crashed.I'll try again later, I guess.
>>542448809zweitimber is poopy but the scrap greatsword fucks. I guess it's like a macahuitl made with sharpened bits of junk metal
>>542460828are the scrap weapons in TLG?i haven't raised my fab above 4 but scrap armor should show up around that point and i don't see it.
>>542461710Scrap weapons should show up at fab 2 if I'm reading the UI right, 3 fab and 3 tailoring for scrap armored denim and leather clothes
>>542462327thanks, i see it. afaik the "auto-learn at level __" isn't always the same as the crafting level, and often enough it's higher. i don't think that is visible in the game, you need to look at the json to see it.but yeah, i'll give it a try. i never crafted this in dda or bn because -2 to hit on a slow weapon is pretty rough. i don't have a lot of dex here either, but it could be worth trying. it looks like maces were removed entirely in TLG. and i know about the armored leather/jean, i was talking about the armor `scrap suit` which isn't great but can be made with a multitool, some strings, and scrap metal at fab 3. road sign seems like a fun weapon, though
>>542205186>worm girl's forkwhich one is that?>>542286945those guys are funfree mindbreak with every encounter
>>542448809>climbed up a tower and died to a wasp queeni was an idiot and thought i could run away, on my fucked up legs, so i took a few hits for no reason. i also didn't bring a rifle or a shotgun because what would i need those for? my pistol should have been able to take her out but there's no way to practice aiming at 0.the worst part is that if i was using my auto-pause settings from dda this wouldn't have happened.
>>542467161>if i was using my auto-pause settings from ddawhat like the safe mode toggle, tlg doesnt have that?
>>542467502yeah it's just safe mode custom settings. i have some values for specific monsters and especially wasps. TLG has safe mode but when i tried to copy paste over my settings from dda, some worked (like resolution) some didn't (like key bindings) and i just didn't all the settings like autopickup and safe mode: i wanted to start playing. but yeah the default cata safe mode settings will make you die to wasps, that's not news.it's so unsatisfying to lose a guy this way. i came back from getting the groceries (irl) and figured i'd play for an hour or two. made some coffee and cheese. the plan was to have the guy's legs heal up, do just a little driving around in the car, nothing dangerous. scout out where to go next, hopefully find some light industry or a library.but wasp queen.fuck wasps
>>542468018>i came back from getting the groceries (irl) and figured i'd play for an hour or two.complacency kills every time, without fail>fuck waspsindeed, they are the worst thing fucken ever if you dont have 7.62 in your hands and distance i actually lost my previous save to a wasp queen>dda>kited a horde around a house to try to thin their death conga line>come out onto the street >queen and her guard that were a block away are now a hand full of tiles to my south>dont have my rifle>try to keep distance with spear>they get me to crippling pain in an instant>the horde starts closing in from the south >kill her guard and the horde quickly closes in to beat the queen and i to deathbeen thinking of trying another branch like tlg or bn but ive been in a flow state of getting gud at dda for the past couple months
>>542469497yeah wasps in general are really nasty. they get Lucky Dodge a fixed % of the time, plus they also have an additional dodge against guns. on top of already high dodge. in theory, it's best to use something like a quarterstaff with +3 to hit. but their attacks and poison make you exhausted and put you in hideous pain very fast, so melee is not a great idea.i've had success with a saber and a motorcycle.dda has some fun mods. check out bombastic perks, i like that one. mind over matter is also great.i'll play one more time on TLG. >spawn in bookstore>wait till dusk>while sneaking out, find working car>some bandits clear out a gas station, but take heavy losses>grab their loot and fill up my car>engine is on its last legs... but it still drives!>swap to an ice cream truck>find jesus
>>542477078>i'll play one more time on TLG (cont.)it's a little shocking to pick up this game and just... every car works? at least half of them work right away. about half of those left have some immediately fixable issue like the chair is broken or the wheels are missing. there's fuel everywhere, all the gas stations have tons of it, and the cars are all full. with this much fuel, why even bother with solar panels when you can just run a generator.I could swear that loot and vehicles were supposed to be scarcer than base cdda. but it feels like there's so much you'll never hunt or salvage.By day two I got a truck with a freezer, a motorycle, found the refugee center, found a wood axe and... immediately almost died to a feral soldier. I don't know why i thought I could fight him, lol. I got away nearly bleeding to death. I really like motorcycles in cata. deathmobiles are very strong for sure, but a motorcycle is the best getaway vehicle. It's also very fun to do driveby axe decapitations. So I got badly mauled and now need to rest up, but I haven't figured out where I'll base. I couldn't really decide so I just closed the game for now.Overall, compared to DDA, hm.Well, the steep requirements to make chest armor are punishing in TLG. you need a lot of tools and specific apparel... honestly, you're better off killing police than crafting. I understand now why anon was dying a lot to guys like axe murderers - worm girl removed scrap armor so there really isn't anything that fits the early-game armor need. the closest is probably armored jean jacket, but that's not a recipe you can make without scavenging in specific places (drilling 2). And it's not going to stop an axe anyway.I'm not exactly thrilled about cunning ferals and feral soldiers on day 1 next to my spawn point and next to neutral locations like a logging camp. But I do like the jump scares. nearly pissed myself when i was suddenly surrounded by zombies in a church.
There will be turn based 2.0
>>542483486it bugged me a bit that I didn't have a base picked so I went back and played out the rest of day two. cleared this hunting lodge which had... dissoluted devourer, swat, and of course a lot of zombies. mutated zombies everywhere too, it feels like mid summer with bloaters and predators showing up consistently. meanwhile it's day two.i took a shortcut through a trailer park and oh boy it looks dangerous. i'm no expert on evo, but it feels like by the end of summer everything is going to be a kevlar hulk at this rate. not that i've ever played a game that lasted to fall.well, there's cars for days so i just car-jutsu'd the devourer with a tractor i found nearby. it's either that or hunker down in base while i heal my `\...` torso (now a full solid single bar at the end of the day). Found a mostly intact riot chestpiece - 68 coverage with 8 bash protect, so i shouldn't be taking massive chest damage nearly as often. off a dead cop of course.i spent 20 minutes casually cruising around investigating desolate barns before i remembered that there's no exodii. loot is a bit weird - the light industries have fuckall. maybe even less than you'd find on No Hope. the last one I went into had only one thing in the main loot - some welding wire. i went into one library and there were a total of ten books. It wasn't even ruined or anything, just all the shelves were nearly empty. meanwhile some places like gun shops and shelters are stuffed with goodies like rifles and meds. Maybe it's the design philosophy of the game or something to hamper crafting as much as possible while facilitating scavenging. If so then that makes sense: it's kinda boring to grind crafting skills for the Nth time.
>>542492317>i'm no expert on evo, but it feels like by the end of summer everything is going to be a kevlar hulk at this rate. You arent missing out much. Evolution is a shitty mechanic that just turns half the zombies into skeletal juggernauts/hulks and the other half into predators, boomers and necromancers. Lategame just feels like Left 4 Dead but with every common zombie replaced by a special but you got minigun and power armor so its ok.

Faulted another forgewright(MDFw), lesson learned DO NOT GO IN ELF!This time I didn't even bother memorizing spike traps and stopped using the grapnel after the second floor. They're literally worthless trash.I also made way more use of the golem since I was rushing hellfire cannonade after finding a book so I had much higher fireskill. It literally soloed Lair, I didn't even cast anything else once(Ice cavern was lmao tier)I see what you mean about it, I still like the lightning spire and found a lot of use for it in Orc to clear out packs of trash, but the golem reigns supreme. It's literally just a fireball but it also bodyblocks and does melee damage. Sucks though, I had golden dragon scales, 16 armor, 16 shields, 18 forgewright, 12 fire/earth and died after burning FIVE tele scrolls, every single one of which teleported me directly into an ambush, two times into literally the same room.
>>542519109Also I died worshipping Gozag with 5000 gold and never once used any of his abilities. I really don't exactly get how to use him. Also also FUCK acquirement, I found two of the fucking things, one gave me a +1 pair of boots, and the other gave me 500 gold, what a fucking ripoff.
>>542519109>mfw I'm playing the same combo and just walked into Elf with 1 pip of WillI'll either avenge you or get rekt like you.
>>542515869>reddit tricked you faggots into thinking it's goodDo you really think these people are capable of though?
>>542519903Alright, I actually survived and even found this curious piece of equipment in there. I wonder if it's worth to invest my armor scrolls into it instead of a CPA or some Golden Dragon Scales. I'll clear the Vaults first before I make a decision.
>>542523398What a gay fucking armor ego. Some lesbian cunt must have thought it up. I can smell regret-index's bullshit game design decisions a mile away.
>>542524169wat
>>542519903>>542523398My mistake was going in immediately after Orc. I just couldn't do anything about the weapons or the archers, the golem was powerless before them. Also not great against swarms of fire elementals. The bee and the spire were also helpless, but I literally had no other spells except hellfire cannonade and that was at 99%(87% without armor)
>>542525158Yeah, going right after Orc is probably a death sentence for most chars. It's like going right into Slime after clearing Lair.I actually cleared 2 branches before even trying to go to Elf, and even when I waltzed through Spider and Swamp, this place was dangerous enough to make me pop a couple of pots and scrolls.I'll never underestimate this place, it's almost as dangerous as the Vaults or maybe even more.
>>542497091Except that character vision range during a clear day exceeds your own viewport greatly, forcing you to play with a tileset as ascii can't be zoomed out. Thus making you miss potentially useful shit your character saw, because thanks to this brainfart the game lacks a mechanic to inform you of it. And even if you play on a tileset, having it zoomed the max out sucks balls.
>>542525628It's funny since I'm used to going in as a conjurer or fire elementalist deep elf and absolutely raping it to death effortlessly. The forgewright spellbook isn't nearly up to the task, hell it can't even do as well as Alchemy!
>>542528320Forgewright seems to be more of a melee class rather than an actual caster. You could try to play it as a Great Value Summoner and then branch off into Conjurations since Battlesphere and Servitor are Forgecraft now, but the early spells are more suited as melee support. Lightning Spire seems to be the most caster-like spell from the starting ones, and the Bee will carry you until you can find a way to defend yourself without winding that shit up every fight.
>>542528961Got killed by Tiamat ambushing me at the entrance of Zot. Just learned you can reach up to 35% failure rate of casting Paragon if you're in a CPA and get Forgecraft to 27.Probably could've cleared this and win, but I was busy watching a vtuber playing Digimon on the side and started doing bad decisions lmao

Set up a book merchant and get all the spells you want. It's hard to imagine dying with 5000 gold in Elf. You can't expect to magically hit the wombo combo: Heal Wounds, Haste, Brilliance, Magic, Resistance with an XP pot on top buuuuut you probably would've gotten some use out of quaffing a couple of those in one action.Bribing a branch seems more like a Zot/Extended thing, but I've heard of a few people bribing Elf if their characters aren't up to the cut. Vault? idk

Forgecraft's identity as "pseudo-caster/melee hybrid" IS gay as fuck. I want gameplay design for retards like me who haven't memorized and internalized all the XP/combat formulas. This is the shit I mean. If all your good spells are level 5+ AND multi-school AND you want the caster to wear heavy armor and you DON'T give them any bonuses or unique ways of casting them? That's not an archetype, that's a contamination engine. >>542549062The best Forgecraft spell a melee guy should learn is Fortress Blast at level 6, every other spell is either too much investment to even try to cast them and will really not help your damage or defenses a lot.I feel it's like a school made to make Conjurers less squishy, since if you're getting Battlesphere or Servitor as a spellcaster, you can easily take Beetle to boost your defenses, or thake Paragon to get a bodyguard that also boosts your defenses. You really don't need it when you're already the tank. You can make an argument about learning Hellfire Mortar as a tank, but it's probably better to concentrate your exp on your melee capabilities and in either Invo or Evo to manage packs or ranged foes.

Well, I guess if I was located in a shack surrounded on all sides by the infected, I'd also ask to join the first dude on a motorcycle that came my way.The plan is to put him on crafting duty, have someone back at home base craft and tailor while I go out and fight. Unfortunately you still need to learn fab/tailor/mech yourself, because your followers cannot repair items or build cars.>>542497091I've started adding notes for things that should be auto-noted. On the one hand, it is immersive to have to watch as you drive. But on the other hand, like anon said, it sucks to just zoom out and carefully watch what is happening. I don't really get why you'd be able to spot a fungal spire from far away but not a wasp nest. why can't my guy automatically note down that there's a wasp nest? i'm not entirely opposed to stepping back on auto-noting, but I don't want to stop playing every time i see a hostile just to note it down on the map.To make matters worse, unless I'm mistaken, they removed the "show path" part of "auto-path". so... you know how auto-path sometimes takes you through ten tiles through the middle of a city, instead of driving across three tiles of grass? now you don't have any indication how it's going to path. hope you can guess correctly.

is there any way to craft 40x46 grenades for the M79?>>542567657And we have power! I set up the base and got Craig to chop trees for logs and to train his tailoring. While he was doing that, I got things set up at the base, including power from the ice cream truck (should fill the large battery in 12h) and raided a prison arsenal for an absolute ton of loot. two full swat armors, hundreds of 9mm, 3 shotguns, a thirty aught six scoped rifle, and even a fucking grenade launcher. shame no grenades, it would be cool to craft incendiary grenades for the fungus quest i have from the church. The next will be to get some crafting books... there's only one library I've found so far, it's in the city I started in. I'd probably need, what, two hundred 5.56 to get that deep? Maybe more. Maybe the play is to full clear light industries, those often have high level crafting books. >>542581046that's too funny. maybe favorite a stack of codeine? that way it'll stick out more. it's not like you're going through 7 codeine every day.
>>542585412>is there any way to craft grenadesnoI could submit a pull request for it but I would need somebody to design one first, it would probably only be a shitty frag design and not the cool HEDP that you can find in military installations
>>542584623>I've done nothing but train Conjuration/Earth/Spellcasting and Dodge for 5 levels in a row and this is what I get?I wouldn't train Dodging and Spellcasting so much early game. Dodging relies on a high dex stat to give good returns, and Spellcasting is only 1/4 as effective as training the specific spell school.Stone Arrow is one of the best early game spells you can have. It is instant damage that applies to basically everything. Something you can do to get around the mana problem early game is to shoot an enemy a few times from range and check if you actually hit them. If you shoot an ogre three times and miss all three, you should probably walk away and regenerate your mana instead of shooting him a 4th time and letting him get into melee range.Petrify is bad, though. If you get Stone Arrow down to a 2% fail rate and don't have any bigger Earth spells, then stop training Earth magic and find something else to do with your experience.
>>542585617what about makeshift 40x46 grenades? one that has the effect of a pipebomb, one like a molotov, maybe one like a smoke grenade too. all those can be crafted already
wait woah this is cool as fuck actuallyhttps://guncadindex.com/detail/40mm-Whistles:e
>>542585926they'd be lategame as fuck, like advanced 3d printer required stuffI'll look into it but don't expect it for a year or sothe molotov sounds unfeasible but just shoving RDX in seems fine, the hard part is of course the fuse and I'd need to look into the available 3D2A solutions today to get an idea of what crafting it should require
>>542586103in the case of the fuse, there are tear gas shells in the police station you could disassemble. you probably would need advanced manufacturing to make them from scratch, though.
>>542586897most CS gas grenades are just water balloons aren't they? also, even for the ones that aren't, the fusing requirements for igniting a smoke/CS charge are totally different from the fusing requirements for detonating a strong secondary like RDXyou can definitely 3d print a chalk training grenade though, that should definitely be inI do enjoy how they added the slingshot cannon to allow you to train launcher skill at all ever, it makes 40mm actually usable and it's kind of a good weapon in general as far as crossbows go
>>542587339i bet there's something you can put in a water balloon that, when popped, creates a fire.
>>542587592not that can be made in a home chemistry lab lolmost interesting pyrophoric substances for this purpose are impossible to handle outside of a glovebox or at least without an inert gas atmospherewhite phosphorus, I guess, but adding that feels like a slippery slope and the cataclysm engine does not handle incendiary weapons very well and basically no I don't like it
>>542573204I wouldn't even mind it if the consequence was that you only needed to make a note of it yourself when you stumbled upon something. The issue is driving past a helicopter wreck or whatever, your character spotting it, but you as a player not knowing it because it is outside your screen.
>>542587940hm. maybe this is the wrong approach.lighting a molotov cocktail and launching it from a potato cannon would effectively do what you need (fighting fungals etc.) and could readily be repurposed for anything with a timed fuse e.g. pipe bombs.
>>542588649yeah there needs to be a way to launch a molotov out of a slingshot launcher, I agreemy go-to approach for fungals is to walk up to them with a lighter and CBRN gear lol, but I can understand why'd you want a ranged attack for that
I'm in danger
>>542588191That's also hugely gay, yeah. >>542589527The range you can identify that stuff is up to tweaking, but as it is you can walk past any POI at literal stone's throw without knowing. My point is that what the characte can see (that helicopter wreck 50 meters away) should be communicated to the player who cannot perceive things outside the screen.

It feels unsatisfying to draw away 90% of the enemies (ordinary zombies) because i don't want to spend ammo on them.raided a city in the evening - library. it was ruined, there was fuckall there. i got jumped by a boomer and an acidic zombie in the middle of the rubble, and almost died flipping all over the place on that bile, choking and puking on the smoke. stumbled out of the building half conscious, had to take my helmet off. it was pretty hilarious. had to wash all my armor, and my shoes, when I got back.>day sixchest health still at ||... , despite being first aid 4 and putting proper bandages and antiseptic on it every day. Arms also in bad shape now, because of the trouble with the boomer bile.I drove around for a bit, jumped into a rural store and... two ferals with ARs showed up. I took a 5.56 round to the chest. somehow survived that but crashed into a tree getting out of there.I would have still been fine but when I told the car to go -20, I had forgotten it was going +20 so it didn't move. I kind of panicked and pressed . a few times before i realized that, and ended up dead.gonna write up what i think about TLG in a little bit

Sitting in the base doing nothing is boring.>combat and armorthe nerf to crowd crush feels great, i hated that from the start desu. On the other hand, you get winded very easily. but, i don't hate that. if anything...it's not a major change to the gameplay? mostly just means you need to do more waiting. it's not insignificant, for example if you're raiding at dawn you can't just catch your breath all the time. but, it's not major either. I think it fits well with the game tension.the armor system needs some pieces for the early game. but in general i like the changes to armor.>enemiesthis one needs some attention. i mocked anon at first for dying to an axe murderer, but the game really does put all the big enemies right there in the first few days. i saw brutes, devourers, ferals with ARs, and I didn't make it past day 6.Now, I don't think it's too difficult. You can very much handle this much because of the generous point buy, loot, and vehicle availability in the game. But. It does mean that there's a lot more... tension and kiting, probing, covert night operations, that sort of thing. That can be good. Just be aware that it's very much not a game where you can kill zombies from the start. If you do, you'll need to heal for a week.>immersioni hate the removal of auto-notes. i deeply resent that i need to manually type in that there's a wasp nest here just so that the stupid auto-driving system doesn't suicide me into it. i also hate that the auto-driving system no longer shows which path it's going to take. it's not immersive, it just means i need to babysit it.>removalsI didn't miss exodii, artisans, or hub01. unlike BN, i didn't run into any cybernetics lying around, so I feel like without exodii, cybernetics will be a late game thing. That's fine too.
Day 3 of trying to get into Bright Nights...I made it to nightfall camping out in a basement doing some baby practice crafts before the zombies scented me out (or took 8 hours to figure out where the bashing was coming from, but I remember scent being a persistent issue from when the thread was alive ten years ago)What... What the fuck else do I craft to increase my storage space? Is this basically it? Dual-wield Bindles, I guess, if I'm just hungry for loot and don't have any real weapons?I'm just getting my crafting skills built up by crafting and disassembling some things- Is it faster/better to read a book, if I have like... A hundred rags, basically? Or not?
Is mountain dwarf just crazy overpowered or what? I'm blasting about as much as a deep elf but I'm wearing plate armor.
>>542610141I keep meaning to try it out some moreThe casting aptitudes are overall quite a bit worse iirc, Fire Earth and Forgecraft are their main focus. Abysmal Dodge/Stealth of course but you've got 55% MORE health than a Deep Elf and halved encumbrance to train your armor with. They lack the doubled mana regen of Deep Elves, as well... But are great candidates for gods like Sif Muna with their fuckass +3 Invo score. (lmao wow)
>>542546808So as best I can tell, you just don't really carry items in boxes, in BN? Possibly because of BN returning to unified contiguous volume- No pockets might complicate hauling things around in a trashcan.I've finally hit that brickwall in needing to know why things are happening (It's been less than two days, why is there a 40 zombie horde outside, is this going to be a problem moving forward, what the fuck?) and I think that might be the cause.
>>542610141Yes. 90% of nu DCSS additions tend to be overpowered. Mountain Dwarf can have heavy armor, a fat slab of HP, a min delay melee weapon, and level 8 spells in a 3 rune game.
How is it still possible on cycle 31 of Achra that I can still be finishing the opening area without enough xp to get my prestige class? Against certain enemies, entering the next level without your prestige is just a guaranteed lost run

I probably just need to do the guided tutorials scenarios and get that part out of the way.

>>542717029It was a sci-fi weapon like the fusion blaster, I think Whales put it in back when it was just Cataclysm. It's been a long time, but I remember it took a variable amount of charge to power it, fed in over time. At low levels it did a little plink to whatever you were shooting, and as you fed more power in over time the damage would go up, enemies could get stunned, and it caused an explosion and fires if you maxed it out. >>542719981Yeah, it'd be nice to hit a button and have it say "last seen in: Cloverton, hardware store" and then I'd have an idea where to look. Even "Cloverton, house" would be helpful. Downside is that city names start to repeat after a while
>>542702620No clue anon, I ownfaulted to a pack of hydras before I got anything but sticky flame (they didn't fucking care about that by the way) up for rPoison monsters and none of my demonic guardians could tank them even one round to get a clean getaway.Maybe Intoxication would've gotten them? But it's one of those things, right- I usually don't go with intoxication because Mephitic covers most packs in chokepoints until you're doing Vaults or Shoals and it comes right when I'm looking for a SOLID answer to rPois monsters. A 20% chance to confuse, for 5 turns worth of casting to empty out my manabar? Sounds dogshit. Not better odds than what I DID try, but hey.Maybe next time.
>>542720981....Divine Exegesis, you fucking retard, that's what I should've done.Forget fighting those assholes, I should've just dropped a fucking Fusillade on their dumb skulls. This is 1 billion times stronger with the raven's visage but I couldn't find it. Crystal form was useful, but the King fight had the guys with purge so I ended up not even using it, so it could probably be skipped. Pretty much all of the damage comes from meditate + pyromancy (especially pyromancy) so you can comfortably skip levelling anything but Vigour (some Willpower doesn't hurt though).
I'm having fun with the new quasimorph beta.Yes, every room is full of enemies, so I'm generally just using run and blasting the door or wall instead of opening the door. Granted, I'm playing with enemy count turned up to max. There's some weird bugs too, like turrets having discovered how to move. The new implants are fun. The giant magnet that disarms everyone nearby is my favorite so far. Looking forward to the next planet for the soundtrack as much as anything else.

>DDA experimentalyou can FINALLY zoom in/out while auto-driving. Great.>>542728759Kinda. You can press your "List all items around player" key (default V) to show monsters/items when peeking. It works the same way in this "auto-peek" mechanic. I think it's pretty good QoL but... it's pretty annoying with auto-path (walking) around areas where hostiles are on the edge of your vision.
>>542724486>Oh, Crystal Plating gives a lot, right? I guess it clears the lower health stuff before Scorch's exponential bullshit kicks in.Yeah pretty much this. Scorch/pyromancy obviously does way, way more damage with just a turn or two of stacking, but before I could get stacking meditate helped kill low health + high speed enemies. It stacked fast enough to never be completely insignificant

What is there to "understand" about Rogue in such a profound way as you imply? It's just a dungeon crawler with traditional dungeon crawling elements from RPGs and such. Early roguelikes such as ADOM, Angband, and Nethack "understand" it just fine. Noita is extremely good and very inspired, but it's not as if it demonstrates "true understanding" of Rogue due to its emphasis on mechanical discovery born from worldbuilding and exploration or whatever. You cite "randomness and exploration," but that's nonsense; almost every single Roguelike is extremely random, so there's no point to specifying randomness, and exploration is further nonsense, considering Rogue is just a dungeon whereas Noita has specific zones and stuff. Even then, though, you can point to early games like Nethack also having set zones to discover and explore - Noita has no special understanding there. What you are actually saying here is basically just "I like Noita and want to puff it up somehow, so I'm just going to say something ignorant and shallow about the medium as a whole since I think it will sound cool." But to anyone familiar with the genre, far from selling it, you just make the game sound shallow. Noita is a better game than you make it sound by saying weird nonsense.
>>542841798the point is that Noita is a game that understands what makes Rogue good better than a game like Cataclysm does, despite not being a Roguelike at all, while Cataclysm is a Roguelike because Roguelike is a control, movement and display paradigm, not a genre, much like First Person Shooter or 2d PlatformerI generally agree with your points that Nethack has come to similar conclusions as Noita, and would add the Angband forks and DC:SS to the list of games that Get Itmeanwhile I pla

>>542829750Yeah, it's got the regular zones. But not the "personal zones" where you can set zones that are relative to your character, instead of the map.So you could set up a food zone on your E side, Electronics on the North, etc, and drop a temporary unsorted on a house or store or whatever and use O to grab everything off the shelves, instead of pacing through every aisle manually and using V a bunch. It's fine, I'll just fuckin loot a hunting store instead desu. Apparently target practice doesn't work for upgrading Archery? Or something- There was an anon talking about trying to train archery from 0 and having a shitty time getting there. I fired 60 arrows out of a heavily modded bow at a wall and failed to budge my Archery from 1(28%), got zero XP.Ah well. It's not so bad. While I'm bitching about it, is there any way to set up an auto-travel pathway? So I can, for example, tell my survivor to hoof it back to base and (assuming there are no zombies wandering in the sightline on the way) have them hump it back without me having to fiddle with crossing four different streets and backyards myself? And if I take a solar panel off of... Say, an electric bike outside, I can install it on the roof and I just need to find a voltmeter? Or building should automatically have their y-levels linked, right?I'm thinking about moving into the fire station a little ways away because it's already got a solar panel on the roof (and a water purifier?) anyways, to be honest. But I like this little basement because it's on the south end of town in an empty cul-de-sac, not in the middle of the city.

MDFw, Found a +3 flaming eveningstar in Orc for ~1500 gold. I already have a +3 morningstar. SHould I spend all my money to buy this is just hold out to find a free demon whip or an artefact.
Ok so the banging started sort of sporadically, but now I'm sure, because I was a ghost getting in here and the only thing I could think of- They can smell me through the wall, can't they? I was kind of planning on spending the night but that might be cooked.Maybe I can craft a blindfold and drag a mattress to the roof, I guess. I've got some food and water on me. >>542868772>The superior nippon steel IS more or less better, right?depends entirely on what you are fighting.against most things? yes. against armored foes like shelled mutants or bots? no. you'll attack twice as often for a total of 2 x 0 = 0 damage. in theory, if you get BM martial art and a katana, it could be fine... but a wakazashi can't use BM.>>542868772>And the overall higher blunt+cut is less important?it is important, but you should also think about your use case. do you really need to oneshot things, for example bots with full auto rifles? do you want the arts? brutal strike and sweep attack are amazing against dangerous enemies, but parry is always excellent and rapid strike is great for mobs.ultimately the play is just try both of them out and see which you prefer.
Just died instantly on entering the depths, what am I supposed to do about not finding any rpois or will after dungeon/orc/lair?I got mega owned last time in Elf, and depths is a deathtrap too. But just a few rooms of spider was extremely dangerous and shoals is even worse.Should I have just brute forced it in the branches or what? Also this is the third run I was unable to get a single forgewright spell past golem running. Closest was diamond sawblades at level 7, but 60% fail rate. Does forgewright just hjave no fucking spells between their(frankly kinda overpowered) book and endgame?
>>542885816like... Zero? You checked with ctrl+f 'pois' and everything?Read for acquirement, remembered to press your "goon out with your wallet out" button to summon shopkeepers if you were on Gozag?Man, I dunno. Make sure to not skip any portals if you can, I guess, obviously open any treasure vaults, wizlabs that you might be able to do, etc. With only golem I think doing either Shoals or Spider is suffering though, yeah. Fuckin hell mate.Hoarfrost Cannonade and Hellfire Mortar are the big ones you're hoping for but not getting those or battlesphere/rending to give you something to do alongside the summons is cringe, those are both level 4 and alembic/percussive are both at 5. Percussive really pushes your Golem from a suicide bomber to Captain Smash with the big AOE ass clap.I think maybe if you see Spider and you don't have ANY rPois by then (or Die Antword in a castable Hellfire Mortar (which you probably don't by L:2-3 without Vehu)) then maybe you monotrain (you probably should be monotraining always desu) Alchemy and try to force Olgreb's online, or Nercomancy for Animate Dead or another chant type horde builder. Spider IS scary but remember it's also deeply weak to Poison itself and hardly anything in there can see Invis, if you have access in any way. You can blast a lot of decent threats with Charm or Paralysis too, to spread out the hate from your Golem/Spire (I figure you memorize Spire as a method of last resort once you're grimly considering whether to hit Depths or yolo Spider). Shoals sounds undoable, though it has several of the same faults (you want +Flight and the Will is higher) Post your morgue file, let us see your gear and skills anon.

>>542885816Once every 20 runs or so I have to play the whole Lair branches without rPois. It's just bad luck to not find any ring in the whole Dungeon and Orcs, but it happens.Forgewright seems to be a curious background. You play it as a hybrid for a bit and then you have to choose if you're gonna go full melee, only casting Bee, Spire or Golem (if you find Alembic, that's gonna be your endgame spell) to help you on a big fight and forget about casting at all after Lair, or you go full caster and worship Vehu or Sif for more spells you can cast and maybe branch into Conjurations or an elemental school.here's a 3rd option that's available to Dwarves, Demigods and worshippers of Chei and that's going full hybrid, casting the big dick spells of Forge like Mortar or maybe Paragon with some luck, but that one needs to dedicate the run from the start to that end and there's no flexibility once you commit to it.I still don't know what's the best god for that kind of run, maybe one that doesn't ask for too much investment on Invocations since you're gonna spread thin on your exp with so many things you have to train in order to keep your spells and melee capabilities online.
>>542900102I dunno seems achievable
>>542909112That last one is what I've been trying all these times, it's a big problem to be so inflexible but at least kinda nice to be able to facetank as a mage. Terrifying how I keep getting killed anyway though. As for gods I've tried out several and none of them really seem to make any sense.I keep fumbling Gozag, Ush definitely doesn't work since I either don't need him or do and he won't help, TSO is impossible to get off the ground, I can't really use more allies or summons unless they're immune to the massive amounts of splash damage golem explosions put out, chei seems kinda redundant, etc... I'm thinking probably Zin, Hep, or maybe Jiv/Lug would work. Zin for instance would have partially solved the lack of rpois.
>>542895735Damn. So does Lear's have to regular 14 encumbrance of chain mail? It's a shame Sawblades wasn't quite castable. Maybe if you shaved a few points off of forgecraft and fire you could put in to Ignite Poison, Cigotuvi's and Mephitic- Which would also get your Walking Alembic out and beef up your Spire. Sublimation and maybe a cheeky Leda's. Feels like a much better toolkit. It really sucks you didn't get any good randarts and ended up taking Lugonu for nothin, though, that sucks hard. This is the least cool looking set of gear I've seen someone wearin in years.
>>542914747Gozag is probably one of the most useful ones, since you don't need to invest in Invocations for it to work and you're gonna be able to get some good randart armors you can enchant further if you're playing a Dwarf, or try to get some spells from stores if you haven't found anything better than Golem.I've been trying TSO, but it doesn't help a lot until extended, and you need to invest into Invocations for it to work too. It's probably the same with Zin.I'm not sure about any other gods, but Hep with a caster ancestor might be good.
>>542910563>Need an anvil>Just go find a big rock>Need a better anvil>Salvage it off of any nearby APCImagine having to spend half the day to pile up your 40 lumps of copper just to bang some metal on other metal.
>>542918174Honestly in the short time I had him, Lug actually helped more than Ush ever did(turns out surprisingly paralyzing all your enemies doesn't work if they're dead in a firey explosion)I was mainlining fire because last game I died failing to rush to hellfire cannon and really wanted it castable, and then never found it...And yeah the armor situation is tragic, last time I had fucking golden dragon scales and a +7 demon whip. Does the walking alembic actually do anything useful? Cause the golem kills fucking everything easily and the only enemies I struggle against would also shrug off poison damage. I keep desperately trying to get diamond sawblades, but it takes a ludicrous amount of skillpoints to get online, and worse than that they don't help me at all in the meantime since I'm perfectly happy with like 10 forgecraft. >>542918396I just never know when to use gozag, it triggers my hoarding impulse(any money I spend creating shops could instead be saved for natural ones), and I actually almost always have shitloads of consumables since I never need to use any of them until after Lair.I think I'm focused on Zin because his whole deal is panic buttons, and also the nightmarish abyss mutation rape I've been through, being able to swap into tso later if I want to is also a bonus. That +3 invo apt is gotta be good for something.
>>542910563It's always funny to see cata recipes and then look up stuff on youtube and see people doing blacksmithing with a single railroad spike as an anvil.
>>542902223>tear in spacecongrats you got an eternal monster spawner now that you cant get rid of
>>542919346Only if you like Haste, Might, Invis, or HP and MP refills.Meph+Ignite Poison is gnarly, massive damage. With the Alembic puffing out actual poison clouds instead of Mephitic, you're double dipping on whatever it's hitting. (and they both still work against rPois)With that loadout up you'd probably blow through Spider and half of Shoals without realizing it. I'm just guessing you've never tried Ignite Poison? It's a lot of damage packed in.
>>542919346For Gozag, you use the money to fund shops if after raiding Orcs you haven't found things you need to survive the Lair branches. If you already can manage that, then you keep your money to use Potion Petition whenever you start a hard fight (and maybe if you're in the middle of a situation that turned south in hopes you get a Heal Wounds+Haste/Invis combo). Later in the game you can use it to fund shops and start getting insane equipment to tackle Zot or extended.Talking about Zot, you could also use that money to bribe Zot and make it easier to clear. It's a pretty straightforward god.About the +3 Invo, it's probably better used on Makhleb since after its rework, it gives you a shitload of flexibility with its abilities so you can shoot fireballs at your far range enemies or summon demons to help your Bee or your Spire with hordes.TSO and Zin could work, but they need 15+ Invo to be better than what Makh offers at 9 at all stages of the game. They get way better if you tackle extended with them, but if your problem is to even reach that far, it's probably better to go Makhleb.
>>542919346Alembic is more of a summon for a melee or hybrid build, since that fucker won't do a lot of damage, but it becomes a free Might potion for you and your other summons after a couple of turns.
>>542920425No I've used it a lot with other casters, I just didn't see the utility when the golem already creates flame clouds. So the alembic actually just gives you constant free potions? That's total bullshit! It's definitely doable to get online too, even without alchemy it was almost castable and I've gotten it for the past five games.Guess I'll try out the alchemy golem next time and see how that works, I just never bothered since the fire golem is so fucking strong. >>542920692>>542920934Any opinions on which mark I should pick for mahkleb? And I was deliberately avoiding him since the constant explosions don't mix well with other summons. Same reason actually that I wasn't using the alembic, the golem explosion just kills everything, enemies, allies, me, it doesn't care.
>>542921394Haven't used Makh since the rework, so I really wouldn't know what's the best mark. You should check out the wiki and read what every mark dos so you can decide what's the one you can make work with your summons and your spells. And the golem will at some point fall off out of utility, so don't plan your build or gameplan around it. Its power quickly diminishes after Lair, and while it's still good to use to clear the branches in it, you probably should start beating things in melee yourself instead of summoning the golem every fight, because the explosion's gonna attract more and more monsters to the fight and that's pretty dangerous once every encounter has to be taken more seriously.
>>542922270Yeah I can tell, it's kinda shit after lair even through it's a god before that. It's just that the gap between that, which you start with, and the next useful spell is gigantic. I never fucking get any of the forgewright spells except the endgame ones and I can never get any of the to work. So the real reason the alembic is good is because it scales with my melee power, I become the tank and it's only job is just to buff me while I facetank everything?
I ended up with elyvion from faded altar and planned to just change later. But I stuck with ely instead and wow actually pretty fuarkin solid of a God. Being able to heal other pretty much any animal and a lot of humanoids too is really powerful. The 27 headed hydra didn't even fight me, he just walked out of the dungeon. For the Vaults: 5 ambush I used elys buff to have something like 270hp when going down and like 150mpSpammed ball lightning, platinum paragon and hellfire mortar and pretty much cleared the entire center in 1 go. This character is strong but not sure if I should do extended or just go for the ascension, I haven't gotten a win in so long
>>542922695>So the real reason the alembic is good is because it scales with my melee power, I become the tank and it's only job is just to buff me while I facetank everything?Yeah. It works better if you have some other summons since it also buffs them up, so calling demons with Makh, summoning angels with TSO, Hep's ancestor or Beogh's orcs will benefit a lot more from it than if you just buff yourself, but that's the cherry in the whole pie. If it buffs you only, that's big already.
>>542918635>>542919508yeah, the lower quality anvils are extremely accessible

>>542923265If you go for extended, you can change for TSO/Zin with no penalty and you keep half of your piety, so you're in a good position to try it. Not like Evy isn't good for extended, but the other good gods are more fine-tuned for it, with TSO healing your HP/MP with every demon/undead kill and Zin making you resistant to Hell's effects and to mutation.
>>542923265>heal other on Lernyisn't that a low chance? what's the formula for Ely neutralingyou should do extended and die in the Hells in my opinion
