I'll be honest. COMPLETELY honest. I adore Sonic 2000s stories. I don't give a fuck about Classic and I find his personality in the comics and western cartoons very annoying and weird. Especially in Archie with the romance. I have no hatred for the western OCs but I don't like the western takes on the game characters except Shadow. Shadow is entertaining even when he's completely ooc for some reason.

Unleashed onwards forgot the other half of the brave coward, making Tails into simply a coward; making him boring or, more strongly, offensive. Consistent drab events leaves no one happy. Those moments of brief uplifting, fun, and heroics is what separates accepted writing like SA1 and SA2 from things like 06 and IDW

I used to hate 2006 because the controls looked (and are) so much more stiff, and because it had a more serious tone, and even more so because I saw it and Unleashed as responsible for killing the Adventure gameplay, but I recently played it (without any sort of unofficial mods, but I want to play those eventually) and had a good time overall, despite some big frustrations in the Shadow and Silver stories. Of course I also knew what I was getting into so that definitely helped, but still, I had more fun replaying the stages than I thought I would, and some aspects of the gameplay surprised me. I also have more appreciation for Sonic's story now that I've given it more attention and took it more seriously instead of the jokes making fun of it and the kiss and stuff. I think ethereal and dreamlike vs realistic has less to do with classic vs modern and more to do with Ohshima vs Naka and Iizuka. Ethereal, surreal, and dreamlike was always Ohshima's preferred aesthetic, and Sonic CD was Ohshima's game, and the only one to fully focus on those aspects. Even then, Ohshima didn't bring that aesthetic back for Superstars either, although again Iizuka was involved and obviously had more power, so maybe Ohshima would have if given the chance

Sonic CD is designed to feel like a strange dream, Sonic 3 is designed to feel like an alternative fantasy version of the real world.

Modern Sonic is shlock. It's not "good". People just get tingles from dramatic oneliners, hype moments, and aura. SA2 was peak. 06 was a close second but the story and gameplay was dogshit, most of the memorable scenes are cringe. Frontiers only had hype moments and the gameplay was decent but there was no oneliners and people only remember the boss fights. Shadow Generations had everything but only a few one liners (the bosses) and wasn't as shlocky (this is on Flynn).
