All the classic games have minor lore differences from one another. Each one of them retconned the lore of the Chaos Emeralds to being located to different islands. Sonic & Knuckles retconned Knuckles as being the guardian of the Master Emerald, when he was the guardian of the Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 3.
