I really suggest if you're making an anime model. It makes your stuff good at side/semiside/bottom/top angles.

Did some texturing, shading and also outlines.

Next one is rigging and im done. This already took like 4-5 days of free time.

normie life is poor preparation for the jobby of gamedev.
>school -> college -> degree -> job -> make a decent living
this generally works. same with other normie pursuits like going to the gym or building your credit score.
but gamedev doesn't respond predictably to hard work. you can be smart and work hard and still flop. or you can be a retard and make a game that appeals to other retards and be set for life.
I don't know if this is encouraging or discouraging because I'm a hard working retard.

Everybody who's telling you "good games sell themselves" or whatever is either a retard, a steam shill, or both.
The internet has changed. Forums died, social media is completely different now and mostly filled with bots, and its hard to even get traffic to a website now let alone get people to download something from it because Google throttles traffic to small websites.
The environment that Minecraft, FNAF, Undertale, Cave Story succeed doesn't exist anymore.
And anybody who says "good games sell themselves" operates under the false assumption that it still does.

Steam explicitly tells devs to market their games themselves

Okay but that is UE3, which was back when the engine was still good (minus texture pop-in).
It wasn't until UE4 and especially UE5 now that the engine has become a bloated mess that actively makes games look worse despite the huge performance impact a lot of it's features have.
Don't even get me started on Nanite and Lumen, two features that murder performance just to save a couple hours of dev time.

"good" is subjective and doesn't mean anything which is why "just make good game" should be ignored. It doesn't mean anything.

"Market your game" does mean something. It's a concrete action that you can take to succeed. This is what causes lazy devs to say "nooo I'll just make good game and then the world will pay me". That's pipedreaming.

Marketing a shit game won't make it sell nor will it make people play it. Cuffbust is a recent obvious example.

Saying that "good" is subjective is a cop-out, because you can still take actionable steps to see what the broader market "subjectively" considers to be good and what they'll buy, and what their quality expectations are.

I can flip it on you by saying just because a game has a low amount of sales or reviews (less than 100) doesn't mean it's automatically bad. It simply just was never given a proper chance by the wider public to be judged whether it's actually good or not.
>>
what makes a game? what is its function, it's purpose? why does it exist?
I posit to you, gentlemen, that a game exists to be played. a game that is not played has failed at its primary directive. a game that is not played is bad

Modern algorithms can calculate whether or not the wider public will judge it good or bad with a much smaller sample size than before. If a game has low sales, it's always bad.

>>543024326

FYI the "don't know it's bad until it's out" works in reverse too. There are stories of old devs who were terrified when they shipped and had no idea they had just released an all time classic. After releasing Half-Life, co-founder Mike Harrington was in the shower when his wife asked him if the game was any good. He replied: "I don't know."

I use AI (for gooning) and I strongly recommend to never ever ever use AI for anything audiovisual-related for the foreseeable future.
There was a time where I was hopeful that AI would enable artlets to pursue their dreams but that's not how it turned out. The hate for it is actually increasing especially among the 'gentlehearted videogame patron' crowd which is the exact people you don't want to offend. They really value the human touch which is why they buy shitty indies and word of mouth advertise them to begin with.
If you're not an artist or don't have one in your contacts list, I question making the sort of game that requires higher-than-average amount of art assets.

Which is funny. These people never go after big corps or studios who actually HAVE the money pay people, never go after the AI companies themselves for all the problems they have with them, and never after Steam for allowing AI with little to no oversight, but they attack and harass the individual indie dev without even trying to understand the situation (whilst being mad at normies for not giving each indie game a fair chance).

You're retarded yourself, and misunderstood my post.
What I meant is harassing and attacking individual creators for using AI is pointless and destructive (provided it's clear they were trying to make something actually good). If you have a problem with AI, take it up with the storefront that allows it, the AI company that made it or the big studios who would actually be "replacing jobs with them", because an individual indie dev would never be an employer for a wide arrangement of artists.

Ask any indie dev and every single one will confirm that the largest amount sales a dev gets is only when they have discounts bigger than half the price where the devs barely make any money.

I become born again and started to become a more devoted follower of Christ. Creativity is a gift from God and He wants me to keep it safe until He says it is ready to be shared.
The Holy Spirit lets me know that it's at least OK to help others with their creativity and talk about what i already shared before obeying Him, i just can't share what i have updated about them.
The last time i tried making an exception and shared one of my concepts it went poorly so i know that God wants me to be secret about mine and His creativity.
>>
>>543041745
You're right, very rarely is the dumped lore anything special either, just basic bitch worldbuilding cloned from other generic worldbuilding. Most of it can be outsourced to NPCs in the first town, opt-in lore for players who give a shit.
>>
>>543041745
I myself enjoy a lore dump. Nothing harmful comes from it, especially when it's for a video game where the main point is always the gameplay and the player character's perspective.
Honestly i feel that complaint to become way to pessimistic, used by pretentious YouTube reviewers and it has spread all over.

expositional dialog is almost never a good thing, it gets exponentially worse in visual media.
video games are bad for it because it's cheap to do and it's easy to get carried away.
kefka is a great example of show don't tell, you get a lot of information about him in the game, but you see one or two cutscenes with him that stick with you.
like i don't remember all the details about him and his backstory and it has been years since i played the game but i remember him poisoning the well and getting sand in his boots.

First of all, sorry for deleting that post, i felt like it was too mean towards you so i replaced it with this >>543042709
As for my reply.
I don't know much about Final Fantasy so i can't comment on that but for me i actually would not mind if illains get brought up more in dialog, beig talked about by NPCs. That's a good way to build suspence for a character when everyone around the player is afraid of them.
And if Kefka really only has such low screen time, well then all i can say about him from what you said about him is that i'm sure no one would mind if NPCs talked more about the stuff he gets up to, even for things that get the imagination to run wild.
In fact, you telling me about Kefka instead of showing me anything about him right now is giving me a good experience with him. Poisoning a well and getting sand in his boots? Sounds like a fun SpongeBob gag. I'm chuckling as i write this.

it's impossible to define what makes a perfect game, cause perfection is subjective. actually some people find imperfection more satisfying.
the only thing you can have as an orientation that is really reliable is your own feelings towards your game. or consumer feedback.
everything where you "guess" what people want is purely theoretical and not reliable.
that's why i'd say the best thing to do is using your own preferences as an orientation to define the value of your game. if you like it, it's good. if it satisfies your needs, it's good enough.
good enough is the goal.
>>

hey aggy diggy
i've dropped my old project (for now) since i dont really believe in it anymore, but i think i got a lot of valuable exp that i can use for future stuff. that being said, what to do in the future is the question.
i've never actually released a game, but my main interest is multiplayer games. that being said, is it better to do a single player or multiplayer game?
like, i basically never play single player games, and i am much more a coder than an artist, so i feel like i am more angled toward taking on something more difficult coding wise than i am something more on the artistic side, which makes me think multiplayer is the way to go. but considering i've never even made a game (thats been sold), its questionable if I can make something of enough quality to actually garner the audience that multiplayer games would demand. additionally, the previous project i was working on was multiplayer (albeit p2p), so i already have a bit of experience in that field, but i wouldnt say enough to be industry standard or release worthy or anything
what do you guys think? make some simple single player stuff to experience the whole pipeline or fixate on multiplayer which has a bigger risk but bigger reward?
>>
im trying to build up the courage and pressure to start on my game again

There's nothing really wrong with continuing with multiplayer, but multiplayer doesn't inherently offer "bigger rewards", especially not multiplayer-only games. You're most likely having trouble with game design, and not really any particular implementation detail.
>>
>>543049471
Multiplayer lives or dies on a playerbase unfortunately. I wouldn't do it because of that inherent risk.
>>
>>543049979
i guess more i mean bigger self fulfillment rewards, since it is something i like better so i'd like be able to develop something of a higher quality. also theres a lot of singleplayer indieslop so i feel as though it stands out slightly more, but i suppose theres a lot of multiplayer indieslop too so i am probably completely wrong

Consider a game like Peak which would be vapid dogshit solo but with multiplayer it becomes a worthwhile experience
Multiplayer really isn’t too bad if you’re building that way from the ground up and it’s only really super challenging if you’re doing high intensity gameplay like a shooter or a fighting game

>>543052465
PEAK is actually easier (due to not having to fight over the limited resources) and reasonably fun as a solo experience.

feels like most indie games fall into one of these categories.
>streamerbait - quick turnaround low effort slop with a weird hook(drugs, janky controls, multiplayer, reddit/twitch memes) hoping a big streamer plays it and their viewers all buy it.
>copypasta of a popular game with a 'twist' - vampire survivors but werewolves, balatro but solitaire.
>uncreative passion project - could be anything, usually bland clones that end up in development hell.
>creative passion projects - usually the games that are actually good and become the jumping off point for the copypasta games.
you also have the indie 'devs' who follow the saying 'during a gold rush, sell shovels.' which is 90% of youtube indie dev content.

not even sure im gonna drop it but it is a motherfucker of difficulty. just seems really dumb to do considering how small and critical the playerbase is, if i fuck up even a little bit my game will be crucified

I'm pretty sure he's talking about mathematical proofs. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formal_methods) It has nothing to do with biochem. At my school, it's shit that they made Computer Science degree do, but not Software Engineering.

>you might have a golden idea and not even realize it, because there is no way to verify other than finishing a product and trying
You're supposed to share your idea and your game even when you're just starting development, then you can gauge whether it's a good idea. Not just make an entire game and then throw it on the market and see what happens lmao
Not to detract from the rest of your existential crisis point which is valid but just saying.

yeah i wish i did software engineering instead of computer science
but it's well accepted in the SE industry that college degrees pretty much just cover the basics. juniors are basically hopeless at accomplishing any sort of REAL important task
at the same time im not sure if there's any better higher education route for a game developer. gamedev specific degrees are at best overly oriented towards learning the AAA slop workflows, and at worst an outright scam
>>
>>543054174
You already made a game and you’re not even done with school. You’ll be fine bro. You may have to do gamedev on the side while working a non-game related software job. But that’s probably better than being in the game industry considering how cancerous it is nowadays.
>>
>>543058639
Just make the effort to learn to code on your own to a reasonably high standard. It's possible to do a whole CS degree and come out of it unable to solve even the most basic programming problem. This is why the interview process for the entire software industry consists of the humiliation ritual of algorithm tests and take-home assignments to build some example project so the employer can be reasonably certain that you know what a for loop is because just having a CS degree isn't enough. Also don't forget to do all the unpaid internships so you can get work experience which you apparently also need alongside the degree to get an entry-level job. That is if companies are hiring for those again by the time you graduate, and some Indian or AI hasn't taken the job first.

Around 100 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 700 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)

Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 100 games a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."

Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

Many youtube devs just outright say they don't care when they finish their game which is really sad because they initially start the project fully intending to make the game. But when they admit they're happy to spend X amount of years working on the game they are admitting a dark and terrible thing, unfathomable almost, which is that their dreams are dead and they don't even care.

In my monster catcher I just didn't want the battle to end abruptly once the player's monster or enemy monster's health reached 0. I just wanted a simple text pop up that says "[losing monster] has been defeated!" and then for the player to have to click 'Okay' for the battle to end.
But because of how complex my spaghetti code is for all the different battle states, yeah it took way longer than it should have. Every change would cause some issue I hadn't thought about earlier so I was playing bug whack-a-mole for a few hours. Woulda been quicker if I wasn't being distracted by a podcast and then music I guess.

Sometimes I get tunnel vision and it's like "The only way I can amend this 700 line script in order to make this change is to also go back and make these [insert however many changes need to be made] in order to get it to work". Maybe there's a more obvious workaround without having to refactor but it feels right anyway. Like I'm probably making it how it should be anyway as I add more complexity and interconnections.
It won't be ready for the next demo day but I'm hoping all the basic combat stuff is wrapped up soon so I can quickly model some monsters to replace the cubes and show you guys a webm or 2.

No offense but your game isn't ultrakill, the finnicky gravity alone plus weird map design where you allow players to just do a 180 spin around a platform whenever they want and however many times they want(probably breaks the balance, besides being hard to aim and jumping backwards can transition you into a gravity shift where in fast shooters you want to have stability of knowing where you land and that your aim remains the same)
then there's pistols blocking both sides of your FOV because you decided to put them too high.

Cool features on their own, no doubt. but they lack being joined together in a way that elevates them, via map design. When a player is chased off the map into a gravity shift and loses orientation, how is that a good feature? Control is a core principle in gameplay. long recovery frames? annoying. walkNtalk segments? anti game design. losing your orientation without intending to? hurts the experience.

Day 17. I skipped day 16 due to a doctor's appointment. Tried to make it possible to blast the vehicle you're riding on like in Halo 3.

The slop is starting to pile up. This is the client visualization, and the desyncs aren't being interpolated very smoothly. Aside from that, there are obvious rig and animation issues. I'm going to push through the slop for the rest of the month and fix it afterwards.

If I do that, then all level design will become pointless.... think about it, if the player can have control over the gravity, they can skip all the obstacles I create, reach places they are not supposed to reach, the magic circles for jumping between platforms become useless because the player will not need them and portals become useless too for the same reason.

I'm trying to learn working in 3d. I'm using Godot and the Animation Trees. I kind of need to talk this out because I'm not sure exactly what to do here now.

I've got everything working mostly fine- my attacks call specific animations in the animation tree and I've got my weapons parented to my model, all good. The problem is that I'm not sure how to really get my animations working with shooting properly. I think it's a blending issue but I don't really know. What happens is that if I, say, jump then attack, the character will shoot from the position of their arms, since that's where the gun is parented, and their arms will be in the air because they're jumping so the bullet will shoot straight up. Either I need to animation to transition somehow and only shoot when it's facing forward or... something. I get what's going on but I don't really understand the best way to do what I'm trying to do.

Currently working on making the player character also be able to have a snake tail
the thing that's currently fucking with me is gravity and how that one end tail piece doesn't connect with the ground so it looks like she's floating. it looks silly regardless but at least it works
