he overpriced it and assumed players would add the content themselves with the level creator tool
it was also boring after 10 minutes because other players couldn't play as the cops
the entire game was basically a 20 minute walking simulator where you bunnyhop away from slow enemy NPCs, pick up keys to locks, and escape
it was simply an incomplete game
i understand that he was probably severely burnt out from years of super hard work, but if he spent another year or two finishing up the game while taking feedback from playtesters, the game would've been a hit
he just wanted to dump the game on steam and get it over with
hopefully he gets back to working on games he's passionate about, he deserves it

I think this is one of the largest reasons he flopped. Some major cargo cult stuff going on when he decided to launch with a level editor.
You add that later on in the game as a "huge free update" because that kind of stuff extends the life for people who enjoy it. Even games built around level editors like LBP and mario maker give the player a campaign first. He obviously thought they'd be happy to just do the work for the dev, which is naive.

if your game reliably has a 1% whale rate (people who spend $10,000+ a year) then you can just compare the CPI to your revenue (minus your operation costs) and confirm if you're profitable or not

I think making the guards NPCs and removing the emergent gameplay aspects of that social component was major mistake. Back when I played jailbreak maps in CSS (the main inspiration for the game I would imagine) homosexual interactions between the prisoners and guards were one of if not THE major reason to play the mode. I distinctly remember being released from my cell after a botched coup which I started in a previous round and having to suck one of the admins off in front of the other inmates. Does cuffbust have any of that?

That style is called handpainted and is very expensive in terms of time and effort required to make it look nice. The lower resolution is a result of a technical limitation of the era. It requires just as much effort on the part of the artist to paint a texture on a 128px canvas as it does a 2k canvas.

When you're in the middle of things you're often too distracted solving immediate problems to notice giant problems that would otherwise be really obvious to outsiders. This is part of why solo development is stupid and teams pretty much always do better. I don't particularly care for it for realistic visuals but it's great for fantasy. Photobashing is comparatively easy but making those character and prop textures look good is still quite a bit of effort and requires some skill in digital painting and image manipulation.

I think the reason it's not used more is that people learning 3d modeling today wouldn't be familiar with it. They'll likely be learning PBR style texturing workflows or purely painted styles and there's not a lot of good resources on how to make this sort of retro 3d art.

I have a question about 3D model axes and default orientations. I'm well aware this just comes down to convention... I'm asking what the most common convention is.

Assume (arbitrarily) a DirectX style left-handed coordinate system: +Y points up, +Z points into the screen.
Assume my game engine, rendering API, modelling program, file format, etc all agree about this so no conversions are involved.
Assuming I'm modelling a human character.

The modelling convention seems to be to model the character such that they face the default "camera". So they're standing at the origin and looking out of the screen (they're looking along -Z in the axes I defined above).
For usage in a game, isn't that backwards? If I increment Z to move the character "forward" in the world, they'll go that direction while still facing the camera and end up moonwalking.

Do I just need to accept this and add an extra transform somewhere, or maybe add some flags to auto-rotate everything?
Is the convention different for characters vs objects like cars?

The challenge of the game developer is to try to understand game design well enough to do their best to make their game good, but they'll never actually know for sure if they succeeded or not at making the game good until after release. Sometimes you can create hype before release through marketing, but when the game actually releases all the hype can be immediately wiped away by the game being bad, which is exactly what happened here. This is why whether the product is good or bad is the only thing that matters in the end.

Yes its nice to have multiple solutions to a puzzle, but pinch points would have prevented his ONE AND ONLY level from being short circuited with a 15 second to victory strategy, and some mild randomness in the map layout would increase replayability A LOT
he invested heavily into a level builder but didn’t bother with getting his patreon supporters to fill up the workshop a bit in the leadup to full release. Then he released at 20 dollars and alienated all of his most loyal fans who are the most likely to build levels for him in the first couple months (the only time that matters)
And his taste is terrible. Weed smoking koalas. They aren’t particularly expressive or cool or cute or sexy. An utter waste of such an important part of friendslop

Well you can only launch once, and he didn't do a demo or a nextfest or early access all of which are opportunities to secure a playerbase. So he'll have to call in some major favors from streamers to get any attention on future updates. But I agree it can be saved. All it takes is a couple of the right streamers to start playing new maps. The question is does he have the stomach to keep working on this game or is he checked out.

Yeah. Don't worry. I have variables within the VFXGraph that will be adjusted per animation. Right now this is just the raw VFX being attached to the enemy so even when they're not attacking the trail is still there (which I do not intend for it to be there unless it's during an attack).

If you are strictly referring to how long each piece of the trail takes to fade then maybe. I'll look more into that and adjust that variable once I've fully finished the attack and weapon implementation.
