Did anyone else have an unorthodox set of first Sonic games? I started out with Shadow the Hedgehog and Secret Rings and they really screwed up my perception of the franchise. I love them for it but I had the complete wrong idea of what Sonic games would be like as a kid.

Essentially it is a compromise between most of the game versions traits and most of the comic characterisation, essentially if they just made him exactly like the game version it'd be jarring following from him being Robo Robotnik and if he was just completely his Satam/Original Archie characterisation it'd be fully jarring to what is coinciding to the games. Even the original Mary Garnet backstory stuff, the human pilot is never in the story as a real character. Only the legend of a guy who broke the sound barrier first and then died, leaving a wife behind who wrote fairy tale about him. Every other character adds the relatability and human connection Sonic inherently lacks. Like Tails. Tails is Deku where Sonic is All Might. Basically, Tails as "Player 1.5" should be the real "protagonist" of the series who has all the growth, development, struggle, relatability, etc that Sonic doesn't display. And Amy should be the character who embodies many of the same personality traits that Sonic displays, but with more of the hot head and bleeding heart that many fans seem to want, and also without the invincible unbeatable power level, so its not as easy for her to get herself out of the danger that Sonic would thrive in, and she's much more focused on interpersonal connection and relationships than Sonic ever will be, even if she's also behaving like an aspirational paragon in her own way. Knuckles is the one who is a responsible guardian that focuses on doing everything he can to protect what matters, with a sense of personal sacrifice. Shadow is a version of Sonic, but one that's shackled to a dark and tragic past. Where that "darkness" creates an illusion of relatability despite the fact that we all know Batman is just as unbeatable and infallible regardless. But Sonic is their "gold standard" they all aspire to.

Sonic Forces is WAY overhated. You can tell most of the people shitting on it didn't actually put their hands on the controller and PLAY the fucking game. The gameplay is fine. Is it an inferior version of Generations? Yes, but the game is fine. The story is a microcosm of most of the things we LIKE about Sonic. Amy is the most like Sonic internally, but externally she is often seen as the most human of the cast because she couldn't just do all the same crazy stuff they could at first, and she prioritizes relationships and connections much more. Knuckles is the direct antithesis deconstructing the idea Sonic embodies, as someone who lacks that freedom because of his own responsibilities he must carry. Trying to "ground" Sonic himself in some way, to make HIM "human", runs directly counter to what he inherently is. Tails, Amy and Knuckles all embody different facts of that human connection, as part of how they contrast Sonic. To make Sonic human would inherently mean to make THEM inhuman. And there's a reason Sonic's primary followers are Tails and Amy, who look up to Sonic, rather than Knuckles and Blaze, who'd challenge Sonic.
