If you don't have a preference for a programming language, I'd go with Unity because it has a track record, huge knowledge base and it's good for branching out to every kind of game. Alternatively Godot because it's good enough for whatever you're trying to make.

The jeetposter being a woman makes 100% sense. I never understood why she would specifically say that my arguments are "illogical" when they are in fact perfectly logical. However, she would be correct in saying that if she operates on woman logic.

Further evidence includes how she prefers very feminine narrative games like Banquet for Fools (even though she's never even played it) and hates masculine games like A Game About Digging A Hole.

I've been working with my team full time on our MMO for several years now, we're all majorly committed. Of our four man team, three of us quit our jobs back in '23 and just recently our fourth left his job at Meta two months back.
We're fully committed, but lately we're hitting major problems. Fourth member, also our newest, is seriously jittery since leaving his job and he's pushing to get us in engine. Problem is, the three of us can't agree on what engine, coding language or art style we should go with. We have a clear vision for the game, which is like, totally a badass fighting vs demons in Heaven (think like, rock & roll with a rocket gun arm and youre punching the devil in the face like BOOM!!)
Now our fourth man is threatening to quit and undermining my authority as team lead, saying bullshit like "We have nothing" and blaming ME for pressuring him to quit. I think his wife, who is literally obsessed with their kid and apartment, has been in his ear and trying to subvert his expectations.
This is a long term project, how do I convince our fourth man to stay on board? Normally, I'd cut him loose for insolence but he's the only one with a PC so we can't.

you need to explicitly filter out the most important things that you need to be done, like 4 or 5 of them, and choose one of those things every day to make your number one thing and set aside time for that one thing. And if you find yourself straying from it keep refocusing back to it.

For me somedays that one task amounts to literally just open the editor and do a thing to your game. And if I can do that then I'm satisfied with the day. But then eventually it becomes okay, I'm supposed to make more levels and I have been avoiding it for months, my number one tasks are now something related to that. I am no longer satisfied just opening the editor and doing bugfixes here and there. So goals need to be set firmly.

I use Microsoft ToDo. It's extremely good. I have experience with other project management stuff mostly web apps but so far this native desktop app has been the best solution. Got me through some major crunches.

Half-Life's development strategy was do all the enemy design, level design, tone, pacing, etc. first and then write the story at the end to fit the almost finished game.

I thought I was doing a simple project, but I always overscope by adding a bunch of stuff and little details that I don't think many people will appreciate in the final product.

There have been many times when I've been close to depression.

These days i'm working on the logic for the selection menu.
Fixing bugs that arise from mixing logic and additions made after the design.

I did my market research using Deep Space Waifu as a reference, a series of cheap shooting games that sold well.

Note: the Godot engine absolutely hates (HATES) object pooling. It does not mesh with the physics system at all, and requires a ton of manual safety checks to prevent glitches. I think the engine devs just expect you to always create new objects every time instead of reusing them.

The problem is that it's impossible to instantly turn/off reset physics on an object. As soon as you turn it back on, it remembers the previous physics position and thus causes glitches. I've tried every method possible but it always does this. The only thing that works is to create and check a separate isReady variable that takes a few frames to kick in, which requires refactoring the entire game. It's such a pain.

So you’ve got $1 million dollars. What can you actually do with that?
Hiring employees these days generally costs 2x their salary total thanks to benefits and other overhead including equipment.
You don’t know how to run a business, so you need to at least hire a manager with experience. That’s $50k salary minimum or $100k annual.
Now you can hire some devs. Say you get 3 fresh grads at $30k each, that’s $180k total cost for the 3 of them.
Your annual cost is now at $280k not including your personal expenses. With a million dollars you can operate this studio for just over 3 years. Within that 3 years you need to make a game that makes over a million dollars then keep doing that every 3 years or you go bankrupt and fire all your staff and shut down your company.

Something that's been very enlightening to me has been ScatGPT. I thought I'd better use it or else I'll fall behind as an intermediate coder. Then I actually have to deal with the braindead, fucked code it shits out. And asking an LLM to fix the fucked code that it itself produced is a fool's errand. So then I have to actually pore over the script/s and figure out why it's not working and it's a very nice feeling to discover in this way how much I've actually learned.
Sometimes the shit that it produces is so bad that I finally have to do what programmers are actually meant to have the confidence to do, take a step back and plan the script myself then put it together from scratch one piece at a time.

Decided to take a break from cranking out code on the architect and dispatch systems to freshen up some of the very first buildings I made that were starting to show their age and shittiness. Pleasantly surprised at the result, and the speed at which I can do this stuff now. Made it all modular as well.

It’s actually really cheap to use and operate considering the value it can generate especially compared to some humans.
Finally it has the potential to save everyone time and energy and let us make more stuff while sacrificing fewer of our precious hours to do so. It’s fun to be an obsessive starving artist in pursuit of a craft but I want to use tools to make things efficiently so I can spend time on other hobbies and with my family.
