The classics are badly designed because players completely ignore the scoring system, however as the conversation from the other day showed the ranking system has some problems too. Players feel restricted by it, or they're made to feel that the way they're enjoying the game is wrong. It can be intimidating and it can ruin a casual experience. Sonic Team has tried to solve this problem by making S ranks very easy to get, or even extremely easy in the case of Generations, but that's almost the same as not having ranks at that point, they're just there to provide some instant satisfaction. I think a good way to solve this problem would be to make score attack, with a score goal, a separate mode.
