i need to come up with a good easy to understand ui for mixing things, if you wanted to make a white russian it's essentially 20/20/60, but i don't really know what i'd show to the player, like a list of compatible recipes when an included item is selected, and what the other amounts are depending on how much you pour in?
>>
Reminder the constant "I give up posts" is just their demoralization fetish don't respond to it, in fact you should consciously dismiss it from your mind so it doesn't effect you. They aren't even creative enough to respond to people who take the bait but that's not the point. It's all about creating an air of demoralization in the gamedev thread. The very essence of crab.
>>

>>
>>543683645
Whatever that is, make it a rigid set of given options, it's the easiest type of ui to understand.

why does the brain say "you need to make it with your game, or you gonna be poor" when in fact as a male your don't care about poverty, and the actual truth is "you need to make it with your game, or no women will want a relationship with you"?
men don't fear poverty, or they'd all be about security, what they really fear is loneliness.
the way men get obsessed with alpha/sigma, mgtow and incel culture is nowhere near the level of being angry about wageslaving.

The problem is it has next to zero content. 9 minutes of content is nothing. If he released a major expansion for free that adds hours of content I do think he could recover it if marketed properly. I see a lot of conversation focused on marketing and sales recurring in /agdg/ and people referring to videos from the YouTube channel “How To Market A Game.”

Honestly, I see a guy obsessed with numbers when the quality of video games varies greatly in terms of content, presentation, and community.

The reason why the 10,000 wishlist tip is valuable is not because it indirectly forces you to validate the idea by creating a community before launching the game.

And let's be honest, most of us are autistic programmers who know nothing about art, being likable on the internet, or telling relevant mini-stories.
>>
>>543690606
>I do think he could recover it if marketed properly
It's not possible to save it with marketing lol. You only get one release, he has completely blown his wad. Your points might work for an early access game, but he didn't do that. Didn't do demos, didn't do nextfest or early access, just did a single release that fell to pieces, slashes the price in half which is really a way of saying "fuck it I don't even care". It's OVER.

I don't really want to be money motivated. If I can get a small enough following so I can have people make fan art of my characters, then I'll have succeeded in my eyes.

I'm making a story-focused adventure game, and I just hope my game's art and writing carries. I'm not smart or talented enough to program anything cool. I just making a game for myself at this point.

not going to release
He can keep working on the demo indefinitely while continuing to do updates on his youtube and interviewing "fellow game developers". And he has earned that right by making a living with gamedev already, but now he's making a living by being the developer of Twister Towers as a work in progress with no deadline which he has said he is willing to spend forever working on until it's perfect. So yeah that game is never coming out.

He's only just now optimizing stuff like lighting. After working on it for 4 years.

The biggest problem with Twisted Tower is that he hasn't released it yet.
He did a next fest earlier this year and got a ton of wishlists that are going to go cold by the time he decides to release it.

He always says he has been working on it for 5 years but in reality the current version of TT has only existed for 2 maybe 3 years.
He spent over 2 years working on Father which had a completely different visual identity and level design.
I also think he's lying about how far he is in the game's development. He has shown off the opening level and the water park level in his livestreams but never anything past that. The trailer shows a theme park and a forest but I'm betting he made those scenes for the trailer.

Chickenman works at a call center and is wrongfully terminated from his job.
(the game takes place where humans don't exist, and instead there are two classes of "people" wihch are birds and dogs, the birds have all the shit jobs and the ruling class of dogs are evil and run everything and exploit the bird workers. So chickenman gets very angry and decides to kill his boss on the 12th floor of the building. Each floor is an office space, but slightly differently themed depending on what birds work there (for example the green/jungle themed floor will be filled with tucan worker birds).
Gameplay is hopefully going to be similar to superhot/hotline miami with muscle memory style gameplay with each level being very fast but hard to beat.

why are games so unoriginal? it's either a FPS, RTS, TBS, rogue-like or one of maybe 5 other genres.

literally the only limit for a game is your imagination, and yet 99.9% of games are just clones with small features/tweaks to make them "unique".

iirc the novel the anime is based on is even more depressing. I think the writer based it off his own life(?). It's nice to read/watch stuff like this to remind yourself of where you might end up when you stop trying.

But anon, even if you're a NEET loser now things can still get better. Just take small steps and you'll get there in time. In fact, being a NEET and having free(?) rent and foot, water, electricity gives you so much free time to take it slow and self-improve. I believe in you.

I feel grabbing is a good feature for 2d platformers. The question to ask is if you want to have puzzles that need the player to move an object around or if throwable objects will be used for combat. If the game has MP, it might be fun to have so you can throw other players.

Yeah, it was going to be the default method of combat, like how it works in Kirby. It's an interesting dilemma because then you must litter levels with grabbable blocks or objects. Note how Kirby can only hurt bosses when they allow him to do so, unless he has a power-up with him. It makes things a bit difficult not only for the player but also for the dev.

Overall I wanted to simplify my game, and it turns out that anything that the grab function can do is done better by simply having a power-up do it. My game already has a bunch of things going on, so I'm going to stick to power-ups.

You have to validate the idea at some point. Preferably earlier than later. You can't work in a black box. You'll become entirely blind to the game's flaws and reality will hit you like a truck once you release. You see this all the time with retards releasing their game and crying about it flopping on reddit.

Steam is almost certainly more or less spyware for the US government and its TLAs, and that likely gives Valve and Steam hidden and severe competitive advantages. Similar to Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Dropbox.

Steam is also not the most moral software, considering that for instance it turns a lot of people into achievement-hunting addicts, or otherwise makes people have hundreds of unplayed titles in their accounts. Though there are even worse and less moral ways to handle a gaming store, and if not Valve and Steam, other, possibly less moral stores might fill the void. And for foreign stores, instead of money going into US coffers, the money would go into other countries' coffers. Probably similar reasons why some countries have gambling laws limiting gambling to inside the country and have nationalized gambling companies - if there are to be gambling addicts, keep the money inside the country.

I dunno, I think people are more interested in seeing new mechanics and different ways of interactivity than a game that looks pretty and has a strong narrative. I'm working in a super niche, easy to use engine to get by. I love doing art and writing, but since I can't really code, I feel like such a poser.

I've spent almost a year on my project now with and I dunno if it'll be worth it. Never worked on something this substantial by myself before.

Perhaps work with someone who can code if you want more complicated mechanics? I myself can code but can't into art to save my life. I _could_ learn how to do such things, as you could learn to code, but it would be time consuming. So if I want to make anything other than a game for autists (eg dwarf fortress), then I will have to find an artist.

But as this anon said >>543730278, plenty of people like playing narrative games. Hell, VNs are glorified CYOA novels.

try to get into the habit of cutting n-gons into quads and tris.
most(all?) engines will convert meshes into triangles, if you have a lot of n-gons the engine can add some pretty fucked up triangles to your mesh.

The phrase "youkoso hitori bocchi" means something line "welcome to loneliness". "Youkuso" being welcome, and "hitori bocchi" means loneliness or solitude. Literally the word comes from "lone" and "monk". The song is from Welcome to the NHK,a story about a hikikomori boy convinced that the NHK (as in the japanese television network) is a massive conspiracy trying to ruin his life. The series covers him and those around him struggling to get out of their predicaments. Each episode goes over another "conspiracy" and each is titled "Welcome to (conspiracy) ". The song title is intended to mirror this.

How is this related to the pink hair girl? I don't know. It must be a conspiracy.

You don't. I don't have room for a MIDI keyboard on my desk but I'd really like to have one.

It's not like a drawing tablet where you simply can't do some types of art without it, you can easily place every note by hand and achieve a similar result. However, it lets you improvise better if you have a MIDI keyboard.
You can use a computer keyboard and it's a bit of a pain but at least it sorta works.

Just use stock royalty free at that point. That's what the decent musician is going to give you anyways. It takes an exceptional musician to know how to compose in a lot of different genres. Had an idea a lot like this, "cozy job simulator" where you are a forward observer in a trench war, living in your dugout and peering out with binoculars from gaps in the sandbags. Fetching bandoliers from down the line, marking down things on a big map.
In addition to your chore like routine tasks, you keep a close eye on no man's land for wire cutters, sappers, raiders etc and spot for the weapon crews.
>See a cheeky two man team cutting wire while you're drinking your tea
>Use your binocular to mark the position
>Pull up a radial menu which directs fire to your mark
>Choose "MG"
>The machine gun team, equally cozy down the line, fire a burst and turn the two guys into mist
>See a tank slowly crawling over the hill
>Mark it for artillery
>First shot lands short
>You use the artillery adjustment radial menu to call an adjustment of 1 unit North, 2 units east
>It's very close now
>You call to fire for effect
>Bombs rain on the tank and it's obliterated
The design problem I have with this idea is what happens if you don't spot/successfully destroy enemies. A loss condition isn't very cozy.

>>543757685
Normally, I would say that I didn't read, and to start with Pong, but this is a reasonably well thought out idea for once.

To keep things cozy, you can just make it so that nothing bad ever actually happens to you, the player. Any enemies you let past don't actually have any negative effect and your teammate NPCs will run forward to fix any damaged fortifications. At most, you'll get a stern talking to from a superior over the radio.

This is basically that planetary defense game that Godaughters keep posting.

Thanks for reading my idea post anon I'm post-pong but don't want to project hop, especially since I don't have a clear vision regarding the loss condition.
Having enemies break through down the line and be someone else's problem is a pretty good solution. It adds to the invincible feeling that your dugout is a safe, cozy place in the Hellscape war outside.
As far as enemies hindering your efforts, I think enemy artillery rattling your base is also comfy, like a storm outside while you're in bed. Direct fire from enemies, be it automatic or sniper fire, would harmlessly plume off the sandbags and initiative a "duck" sequence where you put your head down. You could have a pesky sniper you need to zero artillery on who will hinder your efforts by keeping your head down until you switch peepholes.
Aesthetically the big effort would be making a good base since it's what the player sees clearly, and the no-mans land and enemies need only be simple models since they are practically silhouettes in the darkness (a sniper in the enemy trench would be a slight helmet silhouette with occasional scope glint)
This concludes my ideaguy post.

The point is that balancing the math of health and damage values is fairly straightforward. If enemy damage and health increases exponentially, you just make "bad" builds scale linearly or even logarithmically (i.e. diminishing returns) and align the intersection point a reasonable way into the run, maybe around halfway. If you're having trouble "balancing", you can just increase the slope difference between the two curves to create more separation.
>>
>>543768505
>it's too easy
is not a good complaint on its own. you need to take the data of who is complaining about it into account.
an end game player with meta progression who memorized the patterns of all enemies and it a good gamer should feel like it's relatively easy.
a beginner should feel it's hard.
>>
>>543768505
I'm not that anon but why do RPGs always use exponential growth?
Wouldn't it be easier to balance linear growth, and wouldn't that also prevent things like being able to one-shot every monster except for the guys who live in the area you visit last chronologically?

>>543768483

Some of it has to do with them not wanting to support people they dislike.

Like, if the developer of a game made a brilliant game, but he murdered your family and stepped on your dog's tail, you wouldn't want anyone to buy his game.

Good roguelikes all have a "fail" state where player skill can no longer overcome a difference in the sheer numerical power between the player and enemies resulting from choosing a bad build.

>>543768870
From a mechanical gameplay perspective, it's all the same. All numbers are relative to each other regardless if it's exponential vs linear or if it's linear vs logarithmic. From a game feel perspective, exponential growth usually feels much better to the player.

nta. it's not impossible to make a game in 3 months. it's impossible to make a game anyone would want to buy.
it takes years to learn the tricks of the trade, what feels good, how you bring something from playable to fun to addicting hyper shit where your brain orgasms from the effects and sounds and action.
that target is impossible. aiming to be a profitable game dev in 2 years is unlikely. aim small. maybe in a few years.
>>
making an incremental game, but experimenting with a battlepass-like progression system instead of a branching upgrade tree
instead of analyzing the options and picking what seems most efficient, you progress by spending your points on the next available upgrade
it's boring and lazy but worth experimenting with, since branching skill trees are already verified as enjoyable, i see no harm in trying out a new design
mobile games tend to do this, but instead of spending resources to progress, progression happens automatically per mission/stage completion
this could be fun for casual players, which is perfect for me because that's my target audience
>>
>>543773371
It's possible for a highly skilled developer who isn't having to spend time learning a dozen different skills during the process, but even still, 3 months for a commercial game is a very very short dev cycle. A VS-like is deceptively complicated to make. The lowest scope commercial games are going to be some kind of horrorslop asset flip walking sim.

You would know all this if you ever actually tried to make a video game. That's why it's impossible for you.

Can a successful game be made in 3 months? Yes.
Can (You) start now and have a game ready by the end of January? I doubt it.

Now if you're not a total noob you could make a VS like in 3 months but it would be a struggle to have enough content and also have it be a quality game and have it look good. It needs to look good if you want it to sell. The art doesn't need to be high quality but it needs to have visual appeal. If you can't do that don't even bother.

Incremental games are one option, easy to make and constantly get by with awful graphics. Just don't expect to make more than 1k from one.

One of the most interesting elements an incremental can have is when it has enough depth in the progression to have options. When you don't have enough resources to get everything but you can progress while making different choices than someone else would have. In my opinion a linear progression takes out all the enjoyment since you don't get to choose anything. The thought process is removed entirely. You just click click click click.

I don't like it. Looks like the rival is just using the pill enemy physics instead of the player physics.

Yes. A good example of this is how every MOBA eventually kills itself by adding too many characters to choose from that it becomes completely inaccessible to beginners, and thus aren't able to recruit fresh blood to replace the inevitable player churn. When you give the player a gameplay-impactful choice, they WILL feel like they need to do their due diligence to make an optimal choice, and it is not fun spending so much time reading and parsing through all of those choices.

This is why roguelike choose-from-3 is so popular. It's a good balance between having a massive number of available choices but at the same time not overwhelming the player with every choice all at the same time. New players are only required to read and parse through 3 never-before-seen options at any given time.

>The thought process is removed entirely. You just click click click click.
I agree. My theory is that an appealing narrative to progress through can compensate for the lack of variety. It's essentially confirmed at this point that having variety in the upgrade options enhances the experience as the player becomes engaged in the process of comparing their options, but my personal goal is to see how deeply linear incrementation can be enjoyed if the context around the progression, the story of the game, is interesting enough.
It's basically just a convoluted visual novel at this point, but I'm willing to take the risk. It will be good information.
>>
>>543780921
People don't play incremental games for a narrative.
>>
>>543781036
We'll see how malleable this genre is.

It’s useful as a warning sign: the game is interesting enough to get attention for its dev but not quite able to stand completely on its own yet.
>>
>>543780525
Still bothers me that Aeon of Strife, the gayest UMS on Broodwar, became DotA the global sensation, while Snipers Bald Locks faded into obscurity.
Broodwar snipers games were legitimately more fun than moba style shit and more accessible while also being sweaty enough for spastics.
A similar game that expands on the mechanics, by allowing you to shoot blind into fog of war for example, would be kino.

The solution to this is simply don't let the player have all the guns at level 1. Simple as.

Anons, I think the generic list I'm creating in order to generate the object pool is getting deleted. Something to do with the scope? It creates the objects but the list becomes null later. Is there a way to make it persistent? I haven't figured it out fully but that's what I believe is happening.

No. Objects and Nodes are manually memory managed and requires that you call "free" or "queue_free" on them. Something is freeing them.

Btw, you're still wasting your time making your program more complicated and less performant, retard.
