Dess molesting/abusing Kris is the only sensible way for the story to go. Kris already makes friends with his violent bully in chapter 1 and befriends his asshole rival in chapter 2. Deltarune is a Christian game about forgiving horrible people. There isn't much growth left for Kris if Dess is the final boss if we go by the theory that Dess was just a cool older sister Kris looked up to. There's no challenge for Kris there.
