You know when they did best? When they shocked and surprised you. Like at the end of Sky (I) or more recently with Creil (that was unexpected).
On the other hand, this is a failure of handling a key part of the story. Endlessly whipping up hype, and then teasing you into oblivion and acting like it's not a big deal to cap it all off. Hamilton and the rest act as if it was irrelevant public knowledge.
Games became 3D and the effort went increasingly into optics and "normie appeal" instead of credible plot and character crafting. Don't think it's just a JRPG issue. That's why I'm impressed by the original Xenoblade -- I think they still had it.

Falcom has been trivializing their own stakes for a long time. Le evil expansionist empire was actually just under a curse, le blood and iron chancellor was just trying to heroically and self-sacrificially defeat the curse, because we can't have an actual empire acting out of geopolitical self-interest. Le super secret super strong Ouroboros are observers and powerlevel testers 95% of the series, including in Sky where most of the game is just them running "experiments" (but at least Weissman followed through with his plan unlike the rest of his gay little society). Le gigachad billionaire mega-patriot Dieter was actually just being used by his dyke daughter who is actually a 500 year old witch who doesn't give a shit about Crossbell and barely has any connection to the overarching plot besides KeA (this is still the stupidest twist in the series, worse than anything CS or Calvard ever did).
Falcom has always been bad at delivering on their stakes and writing consequences into their stories, they have only ever been good at buildup.

Wild guess-- it's really a guess and not a spoiler--
Mare is Yume (dream) from the future or a past world.
I guessed that the first time when she got hijacked in Longlai (Mare's haircut also looks similar to Paulette's) but back then it felt too outlandish.
And I'm pissed at the mere idea. This has an unoriginal, cheap Saturday morning cartoon aura to it.
I always assumed that the Grandmaster was the one with a plan (Orpheus) to guide people's souls away from a doomed world and that she was putting people to the test with her designs.
However, I also assumed that this was a singular event tied to the exploitation of orbal energy (would fit with the TLoH game Kondo worked on prior to Trails) and a repeat of the Great Collapse and not some "you were a grasshopper in the previous life" eso trip.
It also totally doesn't fit with the events and philosophy from the first two arcs.
My big fear is that these really intellectual and decent games get subjugated to a tired and cheap overarching plot.
I have accepted that there's no going back to that quality but digging them out of their graves and mocking the struggles of these characters -- that is beyond the pale.
So I'm in the bunker and this cool final dungeon theme is playing. After Kuro II I'm half expecting that things end there despite the trailer/OP, but it's probably too small and not a good stage for the final battle. Final chapters of Sky II or Azure were massive efforts but nowadays you expect things to be shambolic and half-assed. If my rants annoy you (I pay) keep in mind that I try to lower my expectations and hence frustrations.
Would also be sad because the premise of Kuro was cool with some "older" protagonist having that fancy armor and a reformed battle/orbment system. If the writing would match past levels it would rock. Of course, all better than 95% of other games.

Playing the series in order drives home how generic Sky's worldbuilding really was in light of the later games. It just seems silly to return to Liberl's random bunch of self-taught heroes with no school of martial art or swordsmanship to them after Crossbell and particularly Cold Steel.

In Crossbell and Cold Steel, you've got characters who graduated from Military Academies and spent their entire lifes in training halls to master the way of the sword, you've got established schools of swordsmanship (Vander, Arseid, One Blade Eight Leaves), established schools of spearmanship (Schleiden, Nord), martial arts for crowd control (Crossbell Police Academy), and people with a background of military training (Randy, Noel, Fie, Sara).
While in Liberl, you've got guys like Agate <the Heavy Blade> who made a name for himself by swinging a big, heavy sword around with no proper training or style of swordsmanship. You've got random Bracers using whips and sticks fighting on par with Ouroboros Enforcers in the same game Ouroboros was introduced as a dominating force. It's all so silly.

Agate has absolutely no business being on Rean's or Laura's level once he's reintroduced after their post graduation timeskip both of them have spent arduosly honing their swordsmanship.

I think particularly when it comes to CS some of the problems certain people have with it has nothing to do with the actual game and more so an idea they have about this series that doesn’t really exist, although at the same time I do think fans of this series at least in the west have a serious problem with toxic positivity.

Me personally what I get out of stories and what most fans get out of is different and I don’t confuse knowing about tropes with having actual arts literacy. I always approach with a “critical mindset” but most people who say that don’t know the first thing about what good storytelling is. That being said there are things about pretty much every kiseki game that I don’t like but when I interact with something what I ask myself is what is it trying to achieve, did it do that, and do I find it interesting. The answer is usually yes when it comes to this series. There’s no such thing as having no flaws.

Cold Steel is basically the same as Sky and Crossbell, just with a different coat of paint. You would do yourself a major disservice by not playing them, especially if you want to try Reverie/Daybreak, since the events of CS4 especially are crucial to those games. Cold Steel has the most vocal detractors because it is both the newest (for one more month...) and most popular arc. That happens with most fandoms. Plenty of people (myself included) absolutely adore the arc, with CS4 and Reverie being right up there alongside Azure and SC as my favorite games in the franchise.

AND, the more time someone spends as an immortal, the harder what they did is. Osborne, a dead man, would die truly and the same is very likely the same of Rutger. And even if it were not, he was a dead man and Rean did not kill him.

Rutger is the non-Crow/Millium character most likely to be saved by the Sept-terrion as he only became an immortal around the same time Crow would have. So if Rean squired him then he would have survived. Furthermore, Millium's body at the end of Cold Steel 4 was something Franz worked on in secret, the sword did not turn into her body. Osborne would be very unlikely to become a mortal but it's not impossible and Kiseki is a series where miracles happen so he'd live. Even Arianrhod would probably end up living if she was able to be squired.

In some sense, you're right, because as the first entry in a 20+ year series, it had to lay ground work and thus generic worldbuilding alongside it, explaining the countries of Zemuria and Zemuria itself, orbments, septium, the Sept-Terrions, Aidios and the church etc.

To make a final point with your practitioners bullshit: Laura and Kurt are both sword autists that want to get stronger. You might think this is a dismissive statement, but it is the truth.
