The idea that you shouldn't expect change or development in a "mascot franchise" like Sonic is stupid.Sonic himself is the mascot character who never changes, but that -only works- by proxy of everyone else around him that DOES change, even Shadow and Silver who directly mirror him. And it's through Sonic that all these other characters can shine and evolve over time, while Sonic himself shines bright as the one universal constant no matter what form he's in. If absolutely everyone is treated like a mascot like Sonic is, the franchise as a whole can not work. Especially for a character like Tails. A "Kid Sidekick" character to a Mascot CAN NOT be treated like a mascot themself. Because the point of the KID is to GROW UP. Even if design-wise and timeline-wise he stays young, there has to be that constant sense of growth and evolution over the span of the series, while Sonic himself remains static. Like with Batman and Robin. Batman is always Batman, but "Robin" changes over time, and that reflects positively on both characters. Sonic should be static, but everyone else should be dynamic.

Where the focus isn't some big epic adventure and action and battles and power fantasies, but more grounded human connection between the characters and exploring their emotional depths. Even when there IS a big adventure going on and battles going on, this "slice of life, emotional connection" should still be the focal point for a character like Amy. I was just watching clips of Mako Mankanshoku from Kill La Kill while analyzing this concept. And then I was reminded of how Sonic stories work. The emotional anchor is the most important part. The impact Sonic has on the characters and how they change as a result. Like Elise in '06, or Shahra and Merlina in the Storybook series. This is the kind of focal point that Amy's character is supposed to have, like how her story in SA1 is about the Birdie and "humanizing" Gamma. Or reminding Shadow of what Maria's true wish really was. Basically, what I have concluded is..."The Soul of Sonic Stories" is Amy Rose.
