That's the thing.
Lots of Scholar's mate cheesers on low ELO, and it often works because everyone on low ELO opens with King's pawn. The cheesers find out the hard way that it doesn't work against d5.

what do i choose for just a standard ranked MMR game?
>>
>>544595651
Any of them, though I'd recommend something like 10+5.
The first number is how many minutes you get on the clock. The second is how many seconds get added to your clock every time you make a move. These are known as time controls.
>>
>>544595885
ohh i see, thanks, im a complete noob
>>

I would recommend you stay away from the lower time controls at first because less clock time means less time to think.

You should play on chess.com.
It's shilled by hundreds of youtube influencers, they spend a lot on marketing and bribe GMs to play there, so all the noobs are on that site.

You might have a rougher time on lichess, there are fewer complete beginners there. It's mainly used by people who already have a clue about chess.

You shouldn't. IMO it's only good for some tournaments and anonymous games. The fact they can't deal with cheaters properly is too much of a con for me to consider using Lichess over Chesscum.

They actually did step up and finally started banning titled players, including the occasional GM. They also now require proctor software for all Titled Tuesday players. Danya was next on the chopping block and he knew it. So strategically the only way he could win was through death. If he didn't an hero then Kramnik would be completely vindicated.

What's the best free tool for analyzing your games?
I like the one on chess.com because it tries to explain the moves, even though it's often retarded. Not gonna pay monthly sub for that though.
There's also https://app.decodechess.com/ which I've been using recently since you can just keep remaking free accounts for the 2 day trial.

Is there anything better? I'd prefer something more than verbose than just the raw stockfish output of best moves scores.
>>
>>544607131
I think what you want is like an AI agent that you can chat with that humanly explains the moves ideas in a position, and if so that doesn't exist AFAIK. And if it did it would probably be on the same level as the chesscum engine tips.
>>
Is it possible the autopsy report will be kept private? I need to know what he was on so I can get some
>>
File deleted.
>>544608010
Yeah, that's what I use decodechess for. It doesn't just say x is the best move, it also says it's the best move because you're about to hang your queen you retard, and also you can checkmate in 3.

I was wondering if there was anything better, or more reliable that doesn't occasionally mislead you with ridiculous stockfishism like if you go there and trade every piece you have, then 17 steps later you can come out a pawn ahead.

Not a thing as far as I know. Using the Analysis tool on Lichess remains the best option. Run it and click "learn from your mistakes".
Often you'll understand why the move you played wasn't the best simply by looking at the board and being "forced" to find a better move.

I know you said free but
https://lichess.org/coach
You might be able to negotiate a lower rate if it's one game review and answering some questions. Obviously prepare questions ahead of time.
Protip if you do this: teaching skills are much more important than title. So many genuine legit GMs are shit teachers so don't waste your money
>>
>>544607131
>it tries to explain the moves
The point of analyzing should be for you to try and understand why the computer does something. That's how you progress. Being spoon-fed more than you already are(by working with a machine thats better than every single chess player that ever lived) is not ideal

I just discovered/learned chess and can tell I'm getting obsessed. Should I quit now at 500 elo before I ruin my life?
>>
>>544655867
Real chess doesn't even start until like 1500, you can't quit until then
>>
>>544655867
Nah, it's a fun game and improoooving from 500 to around 1200 is the most fun you'll ever have with the game and you'll be able to beat almost any random person at that level so you can play otb. A lot of people like chess
>>
>>544656826
How well do online chess skills translate to OTB? I think I'll have a hard time making good moves IRL since some of the pieces look very similar. I'm considering buying a cheap set.
>>
>>544657174
Buy a cheap tournament set. The board is just a mat you roll up, and the pieces are very easy to identify. If you want to get fancy about it, get a mousepad-style board and double (or triple)-weighted pieces.
None of that is expensive and should last you many, many years, if not an entire lifetime.

>>
https://lichess.org/p0sxK3Vy
>>
>>544658441
That's definitely a thing. It helps to do puzzles, drills, and study OTB instead of on the computer, assuming that's something you want to improve on. And notate your games on paper by hand! A really funny side effect is that you'll start to remember your games afterwards, move for move, without any effort, and it feels really cool.

Thoughts? I've hard rating inflation doesn't exist but this does seem good evidence. I've also seen lots of people say it's retarded to claim the entire top 100 basically are stronger than all the Soviet chess champions (besides opening knowledge, which is irrelevant as elo tracks skill within a pool and all pools of top players have the same access to opening knowledge that exists within their time period)

>>
>>544669471
It's not a zero sum game, since there is a rating creep which keeps increasing.
>>
>>544669219
No, not a good way to learn openings, and opening lines aren't a good thing to spend a lot of focus on if you aren't already like 1800+ com MINIMUM

You'd be way better off learning how to play your openings by incrementally improving on them through what happens in your own games and the best way to improve at chess is practice calculation and spotting tactical opportunities and almost anything else you spend time on is a waste in comparison

Or learn endgames

Opening lines will almost never happen and you won't be able to remember the autistic chessable shit the 1/1000 times you see it in a game. ALSO chessable is literally broken in how it depicts "spaced repetition." If you make a mistake it has you correct it. Then has you repeat the correction (as in dragging the piece to the square you just put it on), then has you repeat the correction... again, as if this is somehow a useful thing.

Sub 500 you should just play the game and develop board vision. Board vision is just ability to see what pieces can actually do and noticing them.
>>
>>544670889
>500
At 500 it'd be DETRIMENTAL for you. You should not be memorizing moves and lines, you need to learn fundamentals.
Center control, king safety, piece development, identifying defended and undefended pieces, basic tactics... learning any of these things will significantly improve your game and there's a glut of high quality learning material available on these topics for free.

I'm fine with believing that but there's literally no way you're 1700 and unable to mate with a king and rook. Can't happen. The fact that you think it can happen shows you don't know enough about chess to even pretend to play the game. Like I said, maybe a semi-decent old guy who has never opened a chess book or used a computer in his life to play chess would have just never learned how to do it, but got an online player, anyone over 700 can perform this mate. I do, and it's retarded. So-called GMs don't know jackshit about openers. Bishop is supposed to take the knight protecting the black e-pawn, and force dxc6 doubling of pawns, so black loses the center.
The correct way to play it is bxc6 then d5, now you have two c-pawns that can support the middle.

Instead the retarded "mainline" theory is taking back with the d-pawn and giving up the center.
If people knew how to play, this bishop/knight trade would be considered a retarded move.

The first day of the third game of the 38th Ryuo title match is being played, between Sota Fujii (sente, the Ryuo title holder) and Yuki Sasaki. The time control is 8 hours per player over two days, and the match is a best of 7 (Fujii leads 2-0).
The opening this game was sente's static rook vs gote's 4th file rook. Fujii made an Anaguma castle, while Sasaki built a Mino castle.

I genuinely don't know. White has more attackers on the kingside than black and a nice dual bishop setup, but black has a R+Q battery.
The knight on e4 can check the black king which is fine, but f6 has two defenders so meh.
I'll pick black.

It was interesting at first, but overall a pretty awful experience. It was, at least, enlightening - I definitely understand its use in wartime. I needed neither food nor sleep.
I am disappointed that somehow the N+B mate didn't stick with me. While I was tweaking, I could see everything so clearly.

There have been some handshaking incidents on middle eastern religious grounds. One player refuses to shake the hand of another. Requires very precise and prophylactic play when white is on the attack in the mainlines. Moreso than other openings I feel because sacs work out almost magically. Also tons of exchange positions in practice that require a decent amount of stamina and patience. Usually knight vs knight in those endgames trying to exploit very minor positional trumps. In contrast the mainline middlegames for black are very chaotic, complex and loose feeling. It's a fascinating opening but I went back to e5.

Fantasy variation
>>
>>544826295
I've tried the two knights, panov, and fantasy. I have found that the two knights is really fun if they don't know how to play against it, but it's too easy for them to just trade down all the pieces and hide behind their pawns.

Panov is good because it forces an open pawn structure and Fantasy is good because it maintains your center, and I have noticed that even at 1900 that my opponents don't know the theory past move 3 or 4.

But for some reason, a lot of people blitz out a response to the Two Knights, not sure why CK players are so booked up against that particular variation

I think the Lichess engine said that position was -0.3, but I'm the one down a pawn and my king was getting roughed up. Prior to his last move, the evaluation was much worse for me than that. The engine evaluation was hovering around -4 (or forced mate) for several moves prior. If he didn't fall for my trick, I'm not as good at holding a draw as the computer, so the -0.3 evaluation is misleading.

right, every commentary team used to be like that but engines killed it. there is no real analysis anymore because the bar tells them who is winning and by how much, they know when to look for tactics and when not, and in any case they even look directly at the fucking lines usually so the chess related content is reduced to just reading what the engine says

>Kramnik is a danger TO SOCIETY. know what happens when people are? THEY GO TO PRISON.

and a couple reasonable ones:

>Im not a big fan of how many of the comments here are painting all Russians as evil, Im sure not every Russian player is publicly or privately a dickhead

>Kramnik is getting harrased and getting death threats so good on him. Of course Kramnik has also harassed people before so some may say it's karma (and it's true) but taking a stand against harassment is good and maybe we'd avoid the tragedy if people had done it sooner.
