Amy is Girl Sonic, Cream is Girl Tails, so Amy and Cream have Sonic & Tails' dynamic through the feminine lens and stuff. But, that does not mean that Amy and Tails would have the Sonic & Tails / Amy & Cream dynamic themselves. Tails is the sidekick to SONIC, Cream is the sidekick to AMY. The differences between Sonic & Amy, and the differences between Tails & Cream, skew the dynamic between Amy & Tails because of the power imbalance. Sonic outranks Amy on the hierarchy. So, Tails stands on equal level to Amy on the hierarchy, despite being below Sonic just as Cream is below Amy. The way that Amy & Tails relate to Sonic as his girlfriend and little brother make them positioned opposite to each other. The exact same way Sonic & Blaze are positioned opposite to each other between dimensions, yet face off against the same image of an egg-shaped doctor.Amy can not simply be the older sibling to Tails in the same way Sonic is because Sonic sees Amy as "younger" as well, and Tails is much closer to her age than Cream is. Sure, Amy should have some elements of being like an older sibling to Tails to some degree, but absolutely NOT like Sally would treat Tails in SatAM. Sally treats Tails as someone significantly younger than herself, acting like a surrogate mother, hence why he calls her 'Aunt Sally'. Sally would say Tails is too young to join them on adventures. Meanwhile, Tails is the one Sonic lets join him on adventures and its AMY who was always left behind. Its AMY who was treated like its "too dangerous for her". Hence her Adventure arc to prove that narrative wrong and make Sonic respect her as an equal. That narrative is entirely based in what being the "Girl" Sonic means.

You want Tails to be nightwing and you're frustrated because Tails can't be nightwing. Why is that? Because "Tails", that is, the two-tailed fox engineer, is too iconic as Sonic's companion. Furthermore, it'd dilute the brand if Tails was sufficiently promoted to a true 'Sonic 1.5' role. So Tails is stuck in a static position in canon where he either has to continuously go through the exact same arc, never allowed to truly benefit from the fruits of it or retain his development. Or is instead written blatantly out of character as a Sally Acorn stand-in (a sassy 'knows best' tactician who doesn't appreciate Sonic goofing around) by western writers who don't understand the character.Union's Tails rectifies this by focusing on the components of modern Tails' character that are salvageable for a static mascot brand franchise. Mechanic. Sonic's adventuring companion. Voiced by a woman. Streamer. Kind. Curious.Union's Patty still has many of the things people want in the "Tails" archetype.

And in a franchise where the Brand has increasingly became dominant and SEGA wants consistent portrayals of these characters across Media, Union seeks to fulfill that.It doesn't make 'every character into Sonic', it just gives every character a continuous never ending arc that's satisfying for the audience. Sonic? He goes on adventures, like usual. Tails? She's always on the look out for the latest scoop, be it documenting Sonic's travels at his side, covering war journalism on the Acorn Continent, or other such anomalous and momentous events. Knuckles? He's always exploring the world, seeking ancient artifacts and culture, seeking to enlighten the once isolated Echidna Tribe of Angel Island with knowledge of the outside world. Cream? She wants to research the mysteries of the world and impress those she looks up to, like Sonic. Blaze? She wants to protect the Sol Empire, which is constantly under threat from the mad witch doctor Starline. Sally? She'll always be leading the Freedom Fighters, struggling to keep her coalition together in Mobotropolis, while fearing a potential attack from Julian to recapture the former capital of the Acorn Republic, the once christened Robotropolis.
