There really is no reason not make your characters sexually attractive if your goal is to succeed. If you refuse to do so your game has to be both REALLY good and REALLY lucky.

I wanted to warn about a scam going on the v3expo discord some moderator is pming users and offering to give away 1 year of claude code and comet browser to make gamedev easier. They then give you invite link to comet browser which gets them 3 dollars and then they tell you to login with your gmail account, they tell you to login on mobile first to sync your mobile data like gmail, contacts, etc to it. Then this google account will be connected across multiple devices and they will steal your your data.
I tried telling the owner of the discord but he blocked my private messages.

On the main large gamedev discords you can find easily, there are fiending psychos who are double dosed on adderal and schizo attacking randoms constantly, they drown you out by simply hitting enter after every few words they type and nobody does anything about them. You can sit and watch them basically drive away one hopeful naive gamedev after another and starting countless pointless arguments. Here at the very least this kind of behavior can be slowed to one post at a time. Nodevs here are pathetic, but nodevs on discord are fucking demons.

You do know that changes to discoverability are not going to be retroactive, right? Fatfuck gabencunt isn't gonna help those Indies already released.

Oh hey, that was me. I looked at 1000 indie games with over 1000 reviews after 2020, and under 20 dollar price tag and sorted them by the release date's month.
However according to my stats, November and February were the 2 best months for indie games to be released (together they made up for 25% of all yearly successes) while December was the worst, with only 3%. While in that pic it seems like November is a lot weaker.
But then again that pic mentions "25000 wishlists at launch" while games like Vampire Survivors or Pseudoregalia (which my stats counted) didn't actually have many wishlists at launch and went viral afterwards.

I really don't know enough yet. First step is to understand it. It's tied super closely to dopamine and serotonin stuff. You have to be able to identify symptoms to deal with it, like how to stay on task when you are time blind

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHgbNGPZphc

TLDR: Get some kind of clock or time keeping device in front of you and check it constantly, because time just doesn't mean anything to an ADHD person when if they just were super strict about their time management they could probably perform like a normal person.

So many people have no idea why are they making the game do what it does. So many people don't seem like the type who would play the type of games they make.
There is an entire subculture of pretending to make games, and not doing anything.

>What would you say to your past self?
Pixel art at 80px or bigger is a hogwash. Don't bother looking, don't bother paying. At that size, find an animator who understand motion, and the tidbits of animating, and draws pictures at a normal resolution. Also if someone doesn't seem adequate from their portfolio, that doesn't mean they are some hidden talent, who need a chance.

Modding, not game dev, but same issue with releasing:
>friend of mine spent years on and off working on a large overhaul mod
>released it a few days ago, tried posting about it in steam forums, not a single download/reply
Since I've heard this is an issue for indie game devs who don't market much as well, what can he even do now?
It's not like it's a mod for a small dead game, it still has a big community (AoEII), yet still nothing.

Everybody knows twitter is lying about views on its platform and nobody gives a shit. Given the kind of scams Valve gets away with, what makes you think anyone would care about this?

Uhm, so it seems like you want to use threads to process data, but not interact with separate parts of the game.
you set some things to only run on threads. I think.
for anything visual that exists in the scene tree you can't use threads to process it.
it can be done via servers but servers seem like a headache you want to avoid if you can. you have to custom rotate with matrices for example. no handy functions.

Can someone help me describe why I can tell when a game is made on Unity or Unreal within like 10s of seeing the visuals?

It's hard to describe but it's like there's a "Unity" look (usually flat/gradients, bright colors, fucking crystals everywhere) and a UE look.
I started rendering animations using Lumen and it's like... You have so much flexibility, yet every single UE game looks the same.

It would probably be wiser to switch over to an engine while I'm not too invested into raylib yet for someone like me who is already way too old for gamedev (30+). I need to save every second at this point. On the other hand using a low level library creates a natural scope barrier.

Raylib is just a shim over OpenGL and BSD licensed. The AI does quick work of it if you know what you are doing and modifications. I will definitely be compensating the author if I profit off it, as I know many others do. Programmers are cool like that.

my game is exceptional and still ignored

people don't pay attention to exceptional things. They pay attention to whatever the masses and authority figures tell them

Your game is exceptionally boring, exceptionally autistic, exceptionally uninspired, and exceptionally inaccessible, if it even exists.
>>
>>545145409
nothing is stopping you from positioning yourself as an authority figure in their lives
you do know you can just
tell people stuff
right?
make a game that's compatible with the modern general audience and then just
tell people to play it
most indies refuse to do this because they have too much passion for their own personal unique ideas to sell out and make some MVP slop
but if you really want success, just make something people actually want
if you want to make your game, then do it, nobody's stopping you, but prepare for poor performance

>>545153963
delivery service
>>
>>545153963
You just use a VPS and load up whatever operating system you used to run the server you wrote.
>>
>>545153963
For real-time multiplayer, use a managed game server host such as AWS GameLift, Azure PlayFab Multiplayer Servers, Google Cloud Game Servers (Agones), or Unity Multiplay if you need authoritative server control, matchmaking, and autoscaling; use Photon Realtime/Fusion, Unity Relay, Epic Online Services, or Nakama if you prefer lightweight relay or P2P networking that avoids running your own infrastructure; or self-host on a VPS from providers like Hetzner, OVH, or DigitalOcean for early testing or total control—each option trading ease of setup for authority, scalability, and cost efficiency, with cloud services best for competitive or large-scale deployments and relay systems better for small co-op or indie projects.

Exactly, the legality of commercializing AI produced games has not been decided through written law or court decision yet. However if you know how to train an AI on your own assets, or legally licensed training material through Adobe whoever, it is perfectly legal to use it.

Anyone got any examples of games where overland travel is actually interesting?

I know Foxhole does something with mud, where you can choose to go around mud patches or you can wade through it and become muddy which ends up slowing you down or having some other effect which affects combat.

Then there's Snowrunner and Mudrunner where the whole thing is about driving trucks through mud and rivers, getting stuck etc,

I feel like there's not a lot of that. Like you'll have some overworld travel mechanic and you just hold a direction and you travel in that direction, the only thing stopping you being cliffs and bodies of water. You can run through a forest at full speed. Seems like an area worth exploring

i wonder how much there is a "what if you'd do this?" factor in gamedesign. and if that's why copying games doesn't work.
let me explain. e.g. on youtube you make a video "what if you put a candle into a microwave?"
now imagine the video game equivalent of this: "what if you put someone in control of a colony?"
i know games are more complex than videos, so ofc a video game isn't as detailed as "put a candle in a microwave simulator", but your game, if it does something new, might have the same "wow it'd be interesting to see what happens when you do this" effect.

let's say i'd make a post now "i worked on video game for 3 years and released it 3 months ago". would you be interested in what happened after release? probably. because it has that "i wonder what happened" effect. same could happen in game design. like "what if you put a guy into a zombie apocalypse?" (already exists though).

like there has to be this pull that players want to know how something plays out.

Command and conquer 4 was s slap to the face to fans and ea games said sorry were just not going to give you it.
Whoever can make the proper sequel would get a guaranteed fanbase snd it might blow up like stardew valley.
But its a high effort proposal youd have to get the lore right.

Let me just pontificate a bit. As a gamer that is involved in playing games as a serious hobby I'm torn everytime I have to pay real money for a game. My Steam backlog is huge and I mean HUGE. There are games I forgot I have and games I activated 8+ years ago back in the times when sales were good and humbllebundle was fire. I still have physical copies of games for PS3 I haven't even touched, not to mention my PS4 and Switch. I also have a PS+ subscription so I have access to hundreds of games and I'm always choosing games from that pool since my subscription will eventually run out and not playing as much as posssible is like throwing my money away.
All that said I still visit Steam store and PS store to see what's interesting AND cheap to play later. In this particular situation I just won't dish out $20 for a game I will not play for the next couple of months, maybe years even. In currently abundant situation you can only sell game if you really, REALLY like the developers of the game or when the game is cheap enough you're feeling like cheating when buying it.
But you can argue - not everyone has these options. There are people with fever games and less options, they will surely buy my game! That is also false. Most people will still choose playing F2P games with their friends than paying 20 bucks. Right now that price range can be associated with literal masterpiece that everyone wants to play, think Silksong. A peak event of 7 years of blueballing your fanbase that when the game is released they just run like rabid hogs to get it.
This is why there's only 400 games per year worth a damn on steam. You need to create hype or have a good price. You either have a cult following or you will bust your cuff.

Valve smothers niche genres. I hope they change the discoverability algorithm to fix this but I won't hold my breath.
You SHOULD be able to make a living by picking an underserved genre and making games for it but that's not how it works on steam because on steam you're competing with everything not just games in your genre. Really stupid.

Big titty tennis dev back as a namefag of all things.
I remember you having a mental health crisis back then.
I'm sure now that you are in legitimate financial turmoil that your half baked "soft" porn game will overcome the many design and development obstacles that make you spiral last time.
I think the major issue you had was that your game isn't tennis enough to be a sports game and not pornographic enough to be a porn game, so instead you're making an awkward and inaccessible tennis game that is too oddly sexualized for anyone to feel comfortable discussing with friends.
Looking forward to seeing you become our next Burger King dev.

After looking at reviews the problem was basically that it's not AAA so it's bad. It's an indie early access game which is rough around the edges and for $20 this is inexcusable to the players. So it's another example of a dev blowing tens of thousands of wishlists.
Dev should have playtested more and not asked $20 for an EA game.

You know what fucking boils my piss? Overworld travel that doesn't have boats or ships. You encounter a river? Well fuck you that's an impassable barrier and you have to go find a bridge. For all of human history rivers have been travel arteries, that's why cities are built on them. Ships are cool and we need more of them. Bannerlord figured that out too late I'm not buying that ship DLC if it ever comes out.

Yes right now. To imply the indie market was like this a few years ago is dishonest. Next fest is cooked after only being a thing for a couple years, wishlists are starting to mean less and less, and the number of games is skyrocketing with AI. None of this was a thing a few years ago.

Imagine calling people newfags on 4chan in 2025. Fix your life.

He says in that exact video how he's making an effort to make clear his game isn't as good as bioshock, this would include pricing it differently.
Also what does that have to do with the point. You dismiss a common sense point by making a pithy remark about the dev. Contain your jealousy.

If it's a Halo 1 ladder then it's as simple as allowing the player to move up or down when looking up or down and within the trigger volume

If it's a Call of Duty ladder (i.e. you press a button and you snap to the ladder) then it's a glorified cutscene that disables all player control and plays the MoveUp or MoveDown animation based on where you are in the ladder

Making a video game IS a manchild fantasy and complete waste of your time. It's not about mental fortitude, it's about admitting to yourself that you are a manchild and your time is worthless so you might as well just waste it.

>>545177179
Even with real skills gamedev a complete waste of time. Imagine for your pictural example someone who could and did build a helicopter alone. It'd still be a waste of time because he'd never be be able to compete with the factories churning out helicopters.

If you don't have a comfortable and fulfilling life, then it is a waste of time. Gamedev is best as a hobby. It's ok to do something because you like doing it, but it's probably not ok to use gamedev as a coping mecahnism to feel some level of control when the rest of your life is a mess, or to imagine that if you just make a game and sell it for millions of dollars then it'll rescue you from a lifetime of bad decisions. If you think gamedev is a manchild fantasy then your brain is probably trying to tell you that you should be spending your time and energy on more pressing matters.

>>545177179
You are right, but I did gamedev when I was a kid and it got me into programming and eventually led to a career as a software developer. Everyone starts somewhere. But back then I had no delusions about publishing and making big money off a game and I was literally a child. Some people come here, watch their first brackeys tutorial and think they're going to release the next lethal company and transform their lives, those people need a reality check and to be told that they're at least 10 years of practice away from being able to make a commercial game.
