I wanted to warn about a scam going on the v3expo discord some moderator is pming users and offering to give away 1 year of claude code and comet browser to make gamedev easier. They then give you invite link to comet browser which gets them 3 dollars and then they tell you to login with your gmail account, they tell you to login on mobile first to sync your mobile data like gmail, contacts, etc to it. Then this google account will be connected across multiple devices and they will steal your your data.
I tried telling the owner of the discord but he blocked my private messages.

Ah yes, I am currently using GIMP 3.0.4 on MacOS. Apply jitter and smoothstroke are options on the paintbrush tool. GIMP crashes a lot on MacOS with large files, so save often.

It's only being running since the 4th, and it's fairly inconsistent because I have the bidding set low. But yes, it is pricey per click because frankly my game is not amazing looking. However, I do recommend it for anons who have impressive looking games, but need to get them in front of people. If you have the cash (200-500$), it's by far the easiest form of marketing available.

So if you actually put in the effort, and made a (serious) bug-free, good game, all you had to do was just talk about it anywhere. Anywhere. And you'd get natural eyes on your game and the money you made was a bonus.

I've received many death threats from other gamedevs, tons of redditors and reddit moderators, and more.

The most insane one was someone who stalked me successfully doxing me across like 8 websites on the internet as some detective sleuth, and ended up calling me out on 8 different websites. The police told me it was an IP from New Zealand, so I was safe, but it all started because I wrote a tutorial on how to edit the Unity asset files for a dead indie MMO.

The loser initially got insanely butthurt because I wrote the tutorial. Then he got raging mad because I said "This allows you to replace the horrible placeholder sound effects with something that doesn't make your ears bleed." as he saw it as some attack on his MMO for some reason. But the stalking didn't happen until he started demanding the mods/admins ban me for the tutorial and it being "illgeal" and "immoral". Well Richard Garriott and Starr Long both came into the thread to praise me for my tutorial, admitted the sound effects were horrible, and thanked me for it.

I know that is the single event that kindof "flipped the switch" for this guy. He just became unhinged seeing the people who thought would destroy me, not only agree with me but praise me and completely & utterly ignore everything he said and ranted about.

After I went on the offense and obtained his IP address, I contacted the New Zealand authorities. Not sure if they ever found him and told him to calm down or not.

I've had reddit moderators stalk me after I block them, one in particular wanting to talk about my panties bc they thought I was female. He was raging because I said gamedev was easy and there aren't real gamedevs at /r/gamedev. When he had his meltdown, I just laughed at him. He didn't ban me (what they usually did) since he thought I was female.

And oh boy was it weird larping as a female on reddit. Redditors just couldn't handle it. I got like 3 death threats, 5 creepy threats, like 20 PM's that were basically requesting personal arguments, and tons of replies to something that really should've gotten like 5 updoots and buried. Well that mod was triggered like everyone else, but he's a mod so he had to power trip. Instead of a ban though, since he thought I was female, he tried to do that whole man "power" move where he is all sexual. I got the feeling he actually wanted to do some "Oh she actually likes me and will fuck me." thing. Never told him I was male since I blocked him so quickly in the thread for being so stupid and incompetent at gamedev. That's the thing, I barely even responded to the guy, and he went off on me like I had been talking to him for months like some nemesis. Went straight to PMing me about my panties too. Like before I could even respond, my inbox is full up of private messages of redditors and r/gamedev mods trying to argue with me "privately".

I can only assume they all thought if they argued with me and won, they would get rewarded with sex? Idk.

I'd share it if I had saved the link. Idk why but I was never into "bookmarks" despite being one of the only ppl who probably should've archived everything he ever did since I have so many stories about gamedevs.

My greatest loss was my conversation with Dan Fedor (creator Neo Scavenger) where I got him to finally admit to me that he hates his fans and would rather they fuck off and keep their money than to ever dare defy his desire to force himself down their throats aggressively. Of course this was AFTER his fans made him a millionaire.

It was creepy, but I knew gamedevs were like this for years and so finally getting him to "snap" in peer to peer conversation and finally, after like too many back and forths talking way too long, got him to just admit the truth I knew he was hiding inside him.

I had a good number of other interactions, but I don't remember them off the top of my head. Life gets too busy to keep my head canon all in my head. If I can remember anymore stories or find the links, I'll share them.

I do have one I will never forget. Where Chris Simpson, creator of Project Zomboid, went off on me with this huge wall of text because I asked him gamedev to gamedev about when he will release a feature he promised a decade ago. And this was all before she came out as trans, even though it was pretty obvious to most people from the start I guess? I don't pay any attention to that stuff. I try to focus on the content of people's character, and wow do most gamedevs have really bad character.

I think it's a mixture of the arrogance that comes with having a slightly higher intellect than the average person (anyone who can even script, is doing better than the room temp IQ people you will so often meet IRL), the elitism that comes with upper class privilege (either wealth or just way too much college education), low self esteem (nerds), terminally online mental illness (too much social media, not enough touching grass), the weird culture (either coming from abusive companies which exploit labor and treat you like easily replaced slaves, or from the absolute freakishly weird mental illness of indie subcultures).

And oh boy, there was some doozies I have when it comes to talking to trans gamedevs. They seem to be the most mentally unstable for some reason. I have nothing against trans people, but their reactions and mental health is absolutely unhinged when interacting with people. My experiences are so tainted, the moment someone says they're trans I immediately gut react "Oh no, are they going to start screaming at me for no reason? I better be careful." Like I said, I don't concern myself with that stuff so I have no idea why, it's just in my experience and my instincts. I've met trans people IRL and they seem normal, so I figure it's the terminally online ones. Like the redditors I know IRL are the biggest most insane people ever. Something about being terminally online breaks people's brains, I think.

So you want enough visual fidelity that you can't just fall back on simple symbol-based graphics and leave it to the human imagination to do the heavy lifting... but not enough visual fidelity to actually look good.

The scale and scope of a game probably depends more on the ease at which an individual dev can add content. In a 3d game even with simplistic graphics you have a lot more to worry about than in a top-down game. It's not the fidelity of the graphics that's the bottleneck, it's the 3d medium itself.

Yes and No.
Yes in that I'm now closer than ever.
No in that life as a gamedev is a never-ending hopeless despair. Never enough time, even when I have all the time in the world.

On a positive note, I'm about to run out of money to fund my free lifestyle, so this final game is my last gambit. It's either this succeeds and I get a long career in the industry, or this fails to sell or fails to release and it's a permanent graveyard of abandoned projects with not a single one ever seeing the light of day as I choose a new career.

Once I'm out of money, it's finally over and I can no longer pretend like it's a viable career. This next one HAS to be successful financially. Otherwise I'm cooked. It's a bit scary gambling your entire life on a dream, but it's finally here. In the past it was just a hobby I never had any real time for, but I lost my job so now it's everything.

I'm pretty much alone in it though. Which makes it really hard. But I saw a meme the other day that really brightened my mood and gave me some much needed hope.

The polished amazing looking end result is what kindof kills me. What must be done to be financially successful, to be a great game, but what is overwhelming due to all the moving parts that all need fine tuning and polish. The idea I should instead just start focusing on making an ugly but fully complete game first, and just make it look good later, is a huge boon for me.

It's helpful bc I am a perfectionist. That's a huge problem for me. I am almost autistic in how perfect I want everything to be, so I always end up making either super amazing technical achievements you cannot even see (like a fully complete, bug free open world survival game framework similar to that of a MMO) or a super thin vertical slice that is meaningless on its own.

The idea I can actually COMPLETE a game 100% in full, and THEN after it's totally finished go in and make it look beautiful, polish the UI & UX, polish the animation transitions, etc.

No, that would be stupid. You should never follow the current hype of the day. If you want to chase trends like that, you have to begin developing the MOMENT the trend BEGINS. So on the FIRST DAY that Vampire Survivors got more than 1000 reviews, you should have been starting your clone.

It actually takes years, sometimes decades, for the clones to come out. But they always eventually do.

Trends are on rapid speed though. It took half a decade or more for Stardew Valley clones to pop up everywhere. A huge delay for some reason. But Vampire Survivor clones popped up in the hundreds almost immediately. That's why trend chasers HAVE to begin on DAY 1 if they wanna do that.

But I hate that shit. Chasing trends is the weakest dumbest most pandering shit you could do. Soulless.

I make innovative games that you cannot get anywhere else. Stuff never seen before. That's why it's always so hard for me to get them up and running. By the time I finally have something playable and it's over the biggest hurdles, I decide "This is too big in scope. I need to reduce scope and start over." I did this for years. It's the whole advice of "Reduce Scope, so you can actually finish something!" That killed me. I kept taking this over and over until my games were insanely small in scope and still awesome, but it took abandoning absolutely viable overscoped projects over and over.

To the point where I missed out on tons of markets, and eventually games started coming out that were similar enough to mine to threaten innovation. Threaten it, not rival it. But it's almost inevitable that eventually someone does what I planned on in some of my games. I think a few of them even saw people with their own versions. Not as good as what I had, but still good while I was on my next "reduced scope" project.

It's when you become responsible for children that suddenly not only do you have real meaning in your life, but you also have negative freetime to the point where even a single job is too much, let alone all that extra stuff. Correct. I stopped developing that game a loooong time ago. It ironically was the one I would have finished by 2018, fully polished and all maybe with expansions. My enthusiasm is somewhat deflated by knowing that even if I make the game exactly the way I want and implement everything perfectly, my chances of success are still slim. This is my third game so I'm not harboring illusions that it's some amazing game idea that I have to worry about someone stealing.
I'm also demoralized by knowing how much more work is needed. New devs have no idea which is a good thing because a lot of them would give up if they knew.

Game kinda reminds me of Rocket Knight Adventures I woudn't lock the arena for two enemies, I think I'd bombard the player with 10-12 quick to dispatch enemies instead of juggling two, it might be annoyng if it happens too often. That one foreground fence is in the middle of the fight I recommend making it transparent the moment you're about to touch it.

the camera lock screen spawn enemy waves, so it starts off low and then theres more enemies spawning at once. Eventually harder areas will start off with higher amount of enemies.

literally who game dev / Software Engineer who fucking hates his job right now. I always lurk AGDG and Been slowly making a game in my spare time on the days where I don't feel like a zombie.

Its supposed to just be a bunch of in jokes and references to my work as a way to cope. I've got a decent work event system going that drives my items triggering

but I'm noticing that the deeper I go into this the more I'm absolutely dogshit at art and shaders and its really holding me back.

I wanted to get this out for demo days at least to get real feedback on how the game play feels while I look into different projects to get better at the art side of game development.
