Even who you were as a character was not settled until very late—evolving from a Marine carrying Cortana into a nameless clone soldier, then changing into the vat-grown “Specialist,” and ultimately to the Master Chief.

Cut levels per a "Key Plot Points" document from Joseph Staten dated 01-24-2001

A10: Retail “The Pillar of Autumn”

A20: Combined with A30. This looks to have been the crash-landing area and “natural formation” tunnel entrance.

A30: Retail “Halo,” but most of the guerrilla war elements were scoped out (cut) when merged with A20.

A40: Attack on a Covenant excavation site. Engineers would have been introduced here. There was a light bridge in this map and Forerunner tunnels, but we don’t know specifics.

A50: Retail “Truth and Reconciliation” but played out differently. Entire section dealing with Prophet arrival was cut. Keyes originally learned the Covenant plan from watching the Prophet's "pre-arrival address" rather than somehow listening in on the guards’ prison conversation.

B10: Prophet assassination mission. Recover keys to the Control Center.

B20: With a Prophet dead, the Covenant military accelerates occupation of Halo and campaign against the human resistance forces. Exterior incorporated into C10.

B30: After Keyes gives a rallying speech, you are led into retail “The Silent Cartographer.” The actual objective changed over time, eventually settling on this being a map room.

There are problems that can arise there, like people swapping out tags in a multiplayer setting.
I think a better solution would be something to patch maps ala classic Doom, overwriting the original map's data when conflicts happen, but using the base map's tags for anything else.

It was cut because they ran out of time and resources to make it good, not because it was bad by default. A properly stencil-shadowed Halo 2 would have looked prettier, more technologically impressive, and more accurate than Halo 3's lighting/dynamic shadows. Also, keep in mind that even the dynamic shadows we got in 3 are partially 'fake'. They're not rendered completely or accurately, but they're believable enough for you to not notice.

Carmack's original big tech breakthrough was used to do reproduce SMB3 on computers, Romero asked Kemco to make the GBC version of Daikatana like Zelda, and Tom Hall's Anachronox was mirrored after Japanese design sensibilities, not western. And I recall Romero's favorite game is Chrono Trigger.

Halo 2 had tons of development issues and the multiplayer was going in a radically different direction than the first until Max Hoberman was the Halo 2 multiplayer and online design for Halo 2 and Halo 3 and had to argue to get the arena multiplayer mode in. Bungie didn't really take it seriously though, they all nicknamed Max's version of multiplayer "Mario Kart" or "party game".

It's entirely possible.
There are some big hits next year and I doubt anybody en masse has Halo at the top of their list.
Also, keep in mind that next year is going to showcase a MASSIVE late-gen migration from PS4 to PS5. A large amount of current console gamers are still on gen 8 machines because the games they overwhelmingly play are available on them, but they will make the switch for GTA6. If they/their parents make a console and game purchase, and they still throw another game on after that, it's less likely to be CEmake as opposed to Modern Warfare 4, RE9, etc.

It was HEAVILY rumored for over a year, but it seems like M$ wants to move on from classic Halo entirely now and leave MCC to die.

It's important to have the correct mindset about campaign v multiplayer. That being that a true Halo game is a campaign experience first and foremost.
I'd be perfectly fine with the CE remake having firefight or some other PvE mode as its "multiplayer" offering for this reason.
Halo CE/1 had multiplayer thrown in the game in the last few months of development for the same reason any multiplayer was in a console game at the time, it was just expected to be there. The campaign WAS the game, and the multiplayer was extra. Now, it did turn out to be really good and pretty addicting, but it's important to understand that this existed in mostly a party game atmosphere. Yes, there were comp tournaments, but they are not representative of the average Halo CE multiplayer session.
Halo 2, or really rather Xbox Live, changed this, and set this unrealistic standard of Halo multiplayer being the face of the series. It was never meant to last, but it stuck, even as CoD 4 and onwards drained the popularity 3 years later.

tl;dr
A PVE-only game is sorely needed at this point to correct this wrongdoing and artificial ballooning of Halo's multiplayer to be its core identity.

Its not the worst in CE that easily goes to keyes being the worst level in the game, but it is very flawed. fighting backwards through a level you already ran through and a level which wasnt the best the first time either gets tiresome. Ruby did improve it though for me so ill give him credit where its due.
It also has the same issue like all of the flood levels besides 343 where they spawn you with a loadout thats not very helpful and makes the first part of all these levels a chore to get through.

Library is almost really good. Each individual combat sequence is really exciting. It just turns from excitement and slight horror vibes to monotonous. Routine alleviates the tension and you check out by the end. It either needed to delete one of the floors and be a quick and unexpected punch in the face of a level or it needed to be a lot longer with radically different transition areas to reset the player mentally.I know they ran out of time so it is understandable why m the launch version is the way that it is, but it is fun to think about the different ways to fix it. Different aesthetics every floor. Even something as simple as like the lights are out on the second floor. You can’t see a thing so you have to rely on your flashlight and maybe Spark’s flashlight. I really like Halo 2’s Library a lot and I was kind of mad it was so short. If I could blend together 1 and 2’s versions I would love it. I imagine instead of an elevator every floor there were the halo 2 gondolas that went outside. And then back into the library.

I don't like Halo's Flood combat. It's not very fun no matter how many times I force myself to play through the Library. The carrier/popcorn flood are interesting, the combat forms not so much.

Yeah, that's a novel experience...for the first time. On subsequent playthroughs it's no longer novel and it gets old real quick. The 343 Guilty Spark mission already did what the Library was doing. You already felt overwhelmed by the Flood on first meeting with them. And it was even more apparent at the end when you finally get a squad of marines and have to slowly watch them get picked off one by one while you do your best to save them while trying to escape and survive yourself.

343 Guilty Spark WAS The Library, but a better version of it. The game should have skipped the Library then and gone straight to Two Betrayals and it would have been a better experience overall, and there wouldn't be so many memes and bad memories of that one mission all these years later. The Library is essentially a tl;dr post of the 343 Guilty Spark mission. And /hg/ hates reading, especially tl;dr posts (like this). Most players hate the library. If there's one thing Halo Studios should 'fix', it should be that mission. Even Ruby was able to realize this and included more of the sandbox/variety with the encounters, which Halo is best known for.

Also, let's not forget beaming up into the Truth and Reconciliation and having to deal with invisible sword elites for the first time. Or having to get back to the surface after visiting the map room on The Silent Cartographer. There are several times when players feel truly overwhelmed, it's not just with the Flood. The Flood was a special case due to being a new enemy/faction that showed up just as you were getting used to the Covenant. But that novelty was quickly lost in the Library by overstaying their welcome. T

I think there might be a good argument for Halo 2 or Halo 5.
In Marathon 2 and Marathon Infinity you have the sequences where you're leading an alien slave revolution on Lh'owon, and are (possibly) playing as an alien via a kind of consciousness transfer, respectively. So the Arbiter sections in Halo 2 and the Sangheilios sections in 5 come off as particularly in the spirit of Marathon to me.
This is on top of Marathon 1's Durandal terminals about exploring alien realities.

Halo 1 is arguably, in its entirety, an extended remake of Aye Mak Sicur. Halo: Infinite would be similar then too.
Halo 5 also has the Cortana rampancy/(iirc) something about Cortana melding with an ancient Forerunner AI - which would be similar to Thoth/Durandal. (actually don't entirely remember the plot of Halo 5, but I know at the very least Cortana merges with the Forerunner systems).
Halo 3 and Halo: Reach arguably have the best terminals in Marathon style. Yes, even the Halo 3 terminals which conflict with the "Humans are Forerunner" idea - multiple conflicting realities or interpretations of reality is a Marathon subtext.

None of these are completely satisfying answers, but it's an interesting question to me.
At any rate the Reach datapads are underrated.

The best innovation Halo Infinite came up with are bots in multiplayer. I hope they expand on this in the next multiplayer game and add more options and behaviors to the bots, such as having 12 or 24 bots, adjusting difficulty for them individually, and letting them drive vehicles.

That's how you truly keep the game alive because you can always have matches available even when the playlists are empty or running low. Sometimes it takes forever to find matches even for the casual modes like Heavies or Fiesta, but then I swap to a custom match vs bots and suddenly I'm playing Quake with the homies.

It was okay. Not as much of a dumpster fire as a vocal minority acts like it is in terms of playability or so forth AFTER all the updates. But at launch? An absolute disaster, and the post-launch period far too long for anything substantial to unfuck it. The campaign was the most basic thing imaginable with not enough to it and a pointless open world mostly just good for faffing about for Halo tomfoolery. The multiplayer still has a lot of issues, as does the menuing, but I mean, it's playable enough now. I can't be too harsh on it knowing what Microsoft was doing behind the scenes with the contractor shit, and 343 were a bunch of directionless nitwits not really sure what the fuck they were doing anymore, but it doesn't really deserve a great deal of respect on its own merits either.

It's basically the current best example of a middling game that's fine to play but has nothing really going for it besides a modern Halo to play.

CE's assets were actually designed with static baked lighting in mind. It's visually cohesive. That's why it has aged significantly better.

Halo 2 was originally going to use a Doom 3 esque lighting system that was fully dynamic, and featured inky stencil shadows. They had to drop it midway through development, and fall back to an updated version of CE's renderer. They didn't redo the assets, so the final game just looks really flat.

The other issue with Halo 2 is that the normal maps look bad because they're not authored properly. The correct workflow is to build a very high poly model that's used to create a detailed normal map. Bungie just painted them with an image editor, which creates highly sub-standard results. Just look at the difference between Halo 2 and Doom 3 or Riddick, which both used the correct method.

The problem with Halo 2 isn't the art assets. It's the lighting. They were designed for a dynamic Doom 3 style lighting system with dark stencil shadows.

Even though Halo 2 technically has more advanced tech, the extensive use of improperly authored low resolution normal maps mixed with the flat lighting hasn't aged well. The flaws are more readily apperent and distracting, especially when playing in HD.

Halo 1's models and environments are just easier on the eyes due to the more constrained use of normal mapping and smoother textures. Sometimes less is more.

Combat Evolved look great, and still looks very striking even in current year. When Halo 2 came out I was immediately disappointed with the graphics and art style. The character models looked more detailed, some architecture/design looked pretty good like High Charity, but there was ugly pop-in everywhere, some textures looked really blurry/low-res, and colors look a lot muddy and blend together, especially with the added light bloom that makes everything a little more smudgy-looking.

In CE, I would always stop to admire details of things or look out into the distance of the skybox. In 2, if you stop moving, you notice how flat everything looks and the textures are too blurry to examine details like you could with CE. The skyboxes don't look like they exist in their own massive space, it's like they're just a blurry jpeg, and nothing is really out there. In CE you could use a sniper rifle to zoom in on the back ground and barely see tiny waves moving in the ocean near the horizon. Halo 2's skyboxes are barely more than a low-res piece of concept art and make the game world feel so small and fake.

Even the good ones like Delta Halo's lakes or Uprising/Great Journey's ocean just make you feel like you're in a big dome or stadium, they don't feel like actual real space.

Ah, I went on a tangent toward the end there talking about skyboxes when the discussion was mostly about textures. But the skybox is technically a texture too. I think what anon lkes about Halo 2 were the higher poly models, but I don't think higher poly models automatically make the game look better. The character models are definitely a step up from CE, but I'd say the environments are either on par, but some of them are also a massive step back from CE. I'm glad they went back to more distant/larger skyboxes in 3/Reach.

As a Halo 3 fan, I would feel bad getting another ODST. Don't want to be too greedy. I only tried it twice. First time I hated it. 2nd time, I had teammates that carried me, but I happened to grab a Disruptor which I kept upgrading. It could stunlock enemies which helped my team finish them off. Try to stick with the group or shadow at least one other player but also cover an enemy spawnpoint no one else is, that way you guys aren't getting jumped out of nowhere.
That being said, I went back to my normal playlists. It's neat, but too tryhard and claustrophobic. I never got into zombies with COD either, despite trying it several times. Just hasn't clicked with me yet.

I don't think it's meant to be an unbeatable mode, so we're probably just not playing it right. I got as far as I did by playing more of a support role rather than just trying to kill the zombies, and by focusing on stunning enemies I never really ran out of ammo and could always find time refill/upgrade. I also had a DMR, which was slow to fire and also never really ran out of ammo mid-wave and I was able to max out both of their upgrades and damage. We were fighting multiple shielded Escharums and Brute Hammer Chieftains at the same time for several rounds killing them really quick, and we never got overwhelmed until the invisible sword elites started showing up with them and wearing us down because we didn't notice them. We also stayed in the same general area and I always made sure someone was nearby.
Maybe our initial approaches were wrong, and there's a certain way to play this mode, so you can't really brute-force it with a playstyle you might be used to. I dislike the Disruptor and hate the Bandit rifle but they worked perfectly for me in this mode. So maybe you just have to switch up your approach. I htink the next time I try this mode I'll be ready for this invisible elites. It's hard to noticef them when you're busy dealing with 2 Escharums and a ton of Rocket Brutes/Grav Hammer Brutes. I barely noticed who was hitting me until it was too late. Pesky invisible elites and their swords.

Solid overall, the open world stuff on the ring is really good, the "real" missions are kind of boring and have the same unfocused 343 stink as 4 and 5, I usually cut off my replays are finishing The Sequence

Heatwave upgraded to fire shock rifle rounds is the best gun in the mode. It hits everything in a group, and gives you back a ton of shields thanks to max health having vampirism. I've had a few games go on for several hours, but only on the space station map. The other 3 spawn plasma turret brutes that will fuck you up hard.

If you want some advice on how to farm that shit (the deaths were from me trying to get the game to end because i needed to take a shit quite badly, could have kept going forever).

Funnily enough the instakill buff is more of a hindrance at high levels because you can't regen your shields from damage.

Multiplayer was alright, but they fucked up BTB and took a vacation RIGHT after they launched (really shouldn't have shadow dropped during the holiday season if they were going to do that) and the game never recovered from that.

I tapped out because BTB was broken, and outside of checking out the Samurai free pass, I didn't come back because MCC didn't need seasons (though they backported it in a way) and BTB wasn't broken on it.

Multiplayer-wise, yes for me personally, I enjoy Quick Play and BTB, some things came too late, 343 is honestly 2/3 in terms of Multiplayer, I liked 5 and Infinite, it is true the 343 campaigns suck and are god-awful but most people who hate on Halo Multiplayer are

A. 25 and under fortnite and call of duty only Zoomers who refuse to play anything else
B. Jaded Halo 2 Boomers who will not accept Sprint under any circumstances

so that leaves people like me, in terms of community its smaller, but the game is still fun imo, I imagine a Multiplayer title is in development considering the fact they are not doing any further updates to Infinite

Dogfighting and silly vehicles, weapons. Make sure to pick a team mode (red or blue team). There's jets flying around the middle of the map if you want to dogfight. And there are marines at each base, some even outside in the grassy area.

There's an Ocarina of Time map out there that's a lot better and you can use unique weapons/vehicles with basically the entire overworld, but this one is pretty nice if you want to stick to a smaller map with more vanilla CE gameplay.

Halo 4 should have been an Arbiter game.
Halo 5 should keep the dual narrative but replace Master Chief with the Arbiter, and at the end of the game, you find MC in cryosleep years after the war has ended.
Halo Infinite should be the back-to-basics game with Master Chief returning as the sole protagonist.
