It was a bad idea to give a character trauma, change her personality because of that trauma, and trying to solve the trauma. That ONE good point that the IDW defending video essay made is the paradox of tolerance. "If Sonic believes in absolute freedom why doesn't he allow freedom for the villains to be villains" is a retarded argument and it only flies because people hate IDW so much that they stop thinking about the shit they say. Tolerance and freedom only extend until they infringe on others. That's obvious to anyone. IDW's characterization issues aside, the fact that Sonic won't let Surge do whatever she wants isn't one of them. Especially because in THIS moment her goal is to KILL SONIC. Eggman is on the OTHER end of that path.

I think it's interesting how Sonic Boom kind of cannibalized a completely different Sonic show. Sonic Synergy was supposed to be a more mature and more western take on Sonic. It is is where all the Boom designs came from. It clearly was meant to take place in a desert wasteland. It became Rise of Lyric. Then when Boom was being made Sega told the game devs that their concepts will be used for a cartoon. The two things became one. You can still see remnants of Sonic Synergy in Boom and Boom's concept art. That's why almost all the characters from Rise of Lyric are absent from the boom TV series except Perci. Perci gets to appear because she already had a high polygon model because she was supposed to be the fifth main character before Sticks.

Sonic Adventure doesn't do any of this, but Elise's story in Sonic 2006 follows all the same plot points in a different context. I also think 2006 is still in the context of a fairy tale overall, because the animal people characters still belong in the world, so Sonic is an "alien" to Elise's life in a figurative sense, Elise's life is sad and serious, Sonic is happy and carefree, he runs by, saves her life, and is unable to stick around because that's not in his nature

It feels like some people are making the same purist arguments that led the series to the 2010s era where it was overwhelmingly simplified and focused almost entirely on Sonic himself with the rest of the cast sidelined if not outright shelvedI get that there are people that just like Sonic and don't give a shit about most if not all about the other characters, but I fully disagree. My interest in Sonic stuff evaporated during the 2010s because while I don't hate Sonic as a character, he's not the reason I love the franchise, and I as a person enjoy expanding stories, worldbuilding, that sort of thing. I don't think it hurts the story to show what's happening in the background, especially in something like the comics where that sort of thing can be more easily explored than in a video game.And I guess part of it is that it keeps bringing back memories of the completely asinine narrative pushed during that time that all people wanted in Sonic games was Sonic himself, Eggman, and (maybe) Tails. Honestly I'm not even sure where it came from, but I saw it everywhere despite the fact that now that period is considered by most to be among the lowest points in the series history

Evan's characterization of Surge makes perfect sense when you consider how she talks about Lunar. Evan does not like the idea of mental illness making people evil. She is morally against it. It's only natural that she wouldn't adhere to a character being programmed to be evil. Then they're evil because of something out of their control.

For the record I wouldn't care if they were just friends or ended up together.As for the Diamond Cutters as a whole, this is just pure fanfic on my part but I think they could work well with Whisper and Tangle taking the role of field operatives while Lanolin is more of a coordinator that directs them, sometimes getting personally involved, sometimes directing the action from a computer screen or something (this goes off a hypothetical scenario that Lanolin gets an arc beforehand where she learns how to be a better leader, and interacts with her teammates more so they mutually have better synergy with each other)Have them go after things that are deemed threats but not substantial enough for people like Sonic to get involved, with the occasional instance of more big names showing up to help. Gives them time to be in the spotlight and grow while not sidelining any of the main characters, make them the B team basically.
