I get what you mean, I think a bit of it is just that nerds/geek communities tend to be "protectively pessimistic" when it comes to Hollywood adaptations of video game content even if it makes no sense to worry about things like that when Nintendo already made it clear with the first movie that they wanted characters to look recognizable unlike, say, the Sonic movies that still refuse to do accurate badniks.

Then you can beat the new games in your sleep because there is a universe between SMB3 and them. NSMB Luigi partially comes close but it proves my point because it's an outlier with difficulty as its selling point. And even that one has all the modern casualizations and only needs you to do like 30 levels to beat the game without hidden shortcuts.
