I can't type. But yeah, it's kinda fun, but it suffers from two major issues that I can remember:
1) you have to know Warhammer 40000 to appreciate it,
2) it's very shallow, there's little diplomacy or economy.
It's essentially Civilization, but with only the fighting, everything else is simplified. So yeah, if you expect Chapter Master, don't.
Among other issues, there's some kind of loneliness to it. Like, you have mods in Br*tish to add voices, but everything is silent except for music and sound effects.
And also, yeah, there are DLCs that can fuck up the balance. Like, Space Marines in Gladius are meant to be tall, early-bloomers (I hope that's the right word), so in early game, they have space marines when everyone else is sending guardsmen or termagaunts, but they lose steam as the game progress, and being limited to one town, they can get outproduced by other factions.
The DLCs give them more and more lategame toys so that they have more staying power.

I picked AoW4 up again because of the vamp dlc
vampires seem like they have a rough start, early game is weak but they've got some thematic/fluffy options
this fight was fun though, caught out of position and tried to make the best of it

well I'm still learning what is and what qualifies as a vampire ingame. It looks like the vampire ruler class, and any heroes they hire get instantly vamp'd, so you can grow your own goth gang that actually drain/feeds extra experience to the vamp ruler. Vamp rulers get castlevania buildings to replace wizard tower stuff, a new terrain type they want to spread, Sunless, because vampires get noticeable debuffs if they're not underground or in Sunless terrain. Their unique skill tree is alright, but people think they feel weak early game with the terrain disadvantage and increased unit upkeep for themselves. Dragon Rulers cost more gold upkeep too, but are IMMEDIATELY rewarding because they're a fucking dragon

Necromancers are just a support unit, but they can fill a niche in Dark cultures since they don't have a native support unit. They still require extra investment though to be rewarding compared to grabbing the Chaplain unit from the Order tomes. Necromancer skills are keyed to buff/reraise only undead units, which if you're grabbing necromancy tomes is generally just going to be stuff like skeletons or zombies early on. Stick with it and you can hit your entire race with a Major TF spell to add the undead tag and suddenly necromancers can raise any of your guys without them being reduced to a T1 skelly
The shadow/necromancer tomes have a lot of resurrection stuff for undead. Stacking enough and the only way your units will really die is if their corpse is destroyed while still knocked out. Corpse destruction is an important feature to counter any serious undead gimmick

I played AoW1 plenty, but didn't get around to 2 yet. Undead were fucking busted in 1, but that was clearly intentional. If you weren't the Highmen you better fucking have priests
Undead in 4 get a small blight/frost resistence, larger fire/spirit weakness, Heartless to makes them resistant to morale damage, and immunity to disease and poison.
You can start small with skelly spam, toss in stuff like bone golems, banshees, or bone dragons, if you get a soul economy going. Souls as a tertiary resource can be clumsy to manage, but undead have gotten enough updates since release it feels more reasonable now. The biggest dick undead creature summons, like Reapers, have cheaper upkeep in exchange for constant soul upkeep. Eventually, probably aim for making your entire race undead. Two major TF spells do this so far.
>wightborn comes with life steal on all attacks, super easy and useful effect. the vanilla option available, makes people look like hollow-faced skeletor-men which could be really cool if you toss in any minor TF that gives glowy eyes
>Gift of the Old Blood only gives extra heal on kill instead of on attack, but ALSO includes chance to inflict Blood Parasite on all base attack, which is like Bleed+ designed to affect anything immune to bleeding and spawn T1 maggots if the target dies. They keep their face but get glowy eyes, basically drank the blood of an undead cthulu horror or something. This TF was part of the vampire DLC that just released. It's higher up on the research tree than Wightborn. I wouldnt say its stronger unless you stack bleed skills and gimmicks, then it feels badass. Wightborn still feels useful on it's own plus you can research it earlier

Some of the baseline mechanics under everything is literally the same between the two games and both games rely on mods to fix half/most of the games' numerous shortcomings. But with CS2 you get to burn a shit ton of processing and gpu power to render an ugly mess that isn't even doing any of the things it said it was going to do. Some of the stuff it does makes a bit more sense but the things players wanted improved/fixed under the hood were never addressed.

For people that actually play timberborne a lot, I only played it for like 15 hours but I was confused by how you were supposed to manage droughts later on. I had made a massive reservoir that took up like half the map and was super fucking deep that filled up and then slowly let it out during drought with floodgates but I would still run out and it felt like the game was going to become unwinnable. Maybe I was doing something really wrong but I had such a ridiculous amount of water compared to the map I didn't understand what else I was supposed to be doing.

The strongest ruler picks are still the vanilla options, and the vanilla cultures have been getting reworks that leave them really strong. Biggest annoyance would be being locked out of the DLC tomes, since those are your extra research/tech tree options. Play like, six full games and you've probably experienced the entire vanilla tech tree, the extra shit helps clutter and expand options a lot. Also not having the ability to insert any DLC events or map features into custom realms for your ideal sandbox could be limiting too. The studio really embraced that paradox DLC mindset

Construction work on the Empire State has now been finished. Also I've been doing some reading and siding with a faction does imply making enemies of their opposing faction. So should I side with the Mayor or the Mafia? I could also side with the High Society or the Army. Bonusses of the Mafia and Army seen rather weak. High Society gives your reporters some boosts it seems.

I'm not trying to diss map painters, would be disingenous of me as someone who plays a lot of spreadsheet simulators. I mostly find it a bit haughty of Paradox to call their games "grand" strategy, but it is admittedly an objectively good marketing term. It is also useful to distinguish it from a more traditional 4X game as Vicky/EU don't have the same kind of exploration that say Civ or EL have, and have a more "narrative"-focused progression since you roleplay a country throughout a certain historical era.

Xenonauts 2 got a big rebalance today. I'm guessing it leave Early Access next year, pretty much the only thing left is Steam Workshop for mods.
Zombies no longer spawn a reaper instantly upon death, now requiring 2 turns first to incubate.
Enemy acc modifier is 1.1x down from 1.3x on Commander difficulty.
Less soldier slots for dropships, so you don't have to manage as many soldiers. Seemingly controversial, but sounds like they decreased number of aliens slightly (I hope) on normal missions to make missions shorter. 16-slot missions still get 16 to make those missions feel more special.
Servitors don't reaction fire, and have less acc bonus for short range, previously were very deadly if they catch you, and don't auto heal enemies after every single hit, previously sucked dick if there were multiple servitors in the area.
Buffed range and reduced TU cost for sniper rifle (lol nice).
Shield nerfed to protect 100% in 90 degrees front but reduce to 20% protection to 180 degrees sides, previously protected 180 degrees which they thought was too much. Note when an enemy shoots at a trooper, he will turn to face enemy, so another enemy might end up flanking him.
Nerfed Guardian armor and buffed Colossus armor (also gets Power Fist melee weapon) as previously there wasn't much reason to equip Colossus armor except to larp.
Added Soviet Town biome.
Bunch of other changes. All the graphics are in place.

Our super capital is a mobile shipyard, woaaah, it even has the retarded broadside combat AI that makes sure it wastes half its fire power if you don't micro it to hell and back

Was playing around with some origins and noticed that blockers have a much bigger impact on growth than I expected, the remnant origin had it's monthly growth at the start dropped from approx 7 to 4 thanks to all the starting blockers compared to a normal planet having 6 thanks to two blockers with 0 blocker starts having the full 7. when you zoom in the camera get shallower giving a more 3D effect. there's a fixed curve that depends on the zoom level
in FA they increased the zoom limit without adjusting the curve, so the same camera altitude has a much flatter angle, making the entire game look flatter.

I think the proper value was 15 or something? but they decreased it to 5. I can't remember.

DLC cultures are pretty nice to grab for extra thematics, but not needed. Unless you like guns, then you need to play Reavers, and struggle early game because Reaver early game is the worst shit but you get fucking awesome once you're mass producing Magelock rifles

Lot of small factors whether you keep or integrate vassals. For me it's based on my current/available room to expand and if I can afford to raise my city cap limit, and if it's not too far away/hard to defend I guess. Keeping vassals is viable so long as they aren't going to get immediately steamrolled by anything you might still be fighting. Stuff like the Order affinity tree, Tyrant Dark subculture, and I think the Supremacy Order tome, help you squeeze free money and numbers out of vassals beyond what they normally produce

Feudal Monarchy is probably the number 1 simplest, and recommended for tutorial I think. Aristocracy has a really fun gimmick but it can be annoying to manage individual units between armies for maximum buffs while learning the general game
Barbarian and Industrial are a bit basic but still pretty damn good in their simplicity.

Oathsworn is the obviously Asian stand in culture that is all about living up to whatever code of honor you pick. So that's either being a paladin, being a prick, or being a pussy. Having to abide by your oath could be tricky while just clicking buttons and learning the game, but the do-gooder/Righteousness oath might be the easiest to maintain since it's all about clicking whatever good karma actions pop up. Just think like a paladin and your kung fu army will get better passive buffs through the game

Added Oathsworn culture, monkey men and oni racial forms, four new tomes, and some new map options, including Intrigue events that you can enable in any sandbox/custom game
Intrigue events might be the most exclusive thing in there, AI controlled rulers you're dealing with throughout matches may end up replaced by special NPC characters and events, it's a decent mixup for sudden extra challenge
The tomes were also fine, one about monk stuff, one about ninja stuff, and then two opposing tomes of Prosperity and Calamity that have a bunch of useful shit, but also your oriental dragons to summon

I heard there was an update recently too.
Might go for Anno 117 though the only one in that series I played was like 10 minutes of the tutorial for 1404, didn't catch me. I apparently also have 1800 in my library that I haven't even tried. Frostpunk too. Sometimes I make a deal with myself to buy a game instead of drink but often I end up just doing both

After playing enough you'll notice there's a point 1/3rd to 2/3rds of the way to the nominal endpoint of the game where you know you've already WON, but the game's not over yet. The AI generally isn't smart enough to fight a player who's optimized his holdings or even snowballed, which is why they just get dumb bonuses on higher difficulties in a lot of games. Try shorter maps or more chaotic worldgen settings.
