My terraria hardcore run is going extremely well. I got a deadly undertaker on my first heart and I found a dart trap right away when I went underground, which means I can see wires now. I just need to not fuck up until I get the grand design and to find a way to bypass fall damage and the run will be set. It's incredibly hard to die with a tank build, which is what I'm aiming for.

Yeah it's kinda crazy. Like we've all seen pictures like this and understand that these aren't to scale. But I think they still massively undercut how fucking huge space is.
I think what made me realize the the huge distances involved is a video by some guys building a solar system to scale with the earth represented by a marble. And they had to go out into the desert and drive around in cars, because the outer planets were 3-5km out from the sun.
Hell crossing the solar system at light speed would still take you several hours. I don't think these are scales are minds are meant to grasp

Some part of my monkey brain just sees the game world as less "valuable" if it's not handcrafted and it's hard for me to really care for it actually I can't quite put my finger down on what causes this feeling, because in some games like Vintage Story or Factorio I don't really mind, while some handcrafted maps like Satisfactory give me the same feeling. Maybe it relates to whether or not the map exists as a vehicle to basebuilding and creative expression or is meant to be actually explored

Oh, but we've done that! Accidentally.
In 1957 just before the start of the space race, we accelerated a man-made object (basically a huge one-ton manhole cover) with a single blast, through the atmosphere, to *six* times escape velocity. Well, to be honest the lid was never found--it either escaped Earth or got vaporized by the atmosphere.
Basically we put a nuke in a borehole and then put a cork on the hole, expecting it to contain the blast.

It was the Pascal-B nuclear test from Operation Plumbbob if you want to read more about it.

I understand that some people might want to take a shortcut and watch a guide for some strategy or management game, maybe an RPG with complex machanics, but KCD?
I guess the combat is a bit obtuse and it can help to have it explained to you a little more, but beyond that? The rest of the game is just traveling around and experiencing the game world, how do you even make a 1:30h guide out of that?

First Impressions of Timesplitters Rewind
-Gunplay is a little floaty, partly because it uses a semi-dynamic crosshair instead of static, but is much more constrained (instant turning instead of edge-turning, smoother autocenter, tight limits) than in TS2. Just takes a match or two to acclimate. Has mild togglable aim assist
-Animations are kinda springy. Needs to be toned down a notch
-Music is NOT ported from the games, it's instead original stuff that either incorporates pieces of the original tracks or just sounds like em. This makes total sense, they're already on thin ice copyright-wise just making this, but still a mild bummer
-Playable characters are a grabbag of the whole series, usually favoring FP designs in case of long-runners. Some even have selection animations, but most don't. Yes, Slutshirt Jo-Beth is in
-Zombie characters lose their head when headshot and keep living
-Has the entire TS1 story. Never played it so that's neat. Level selection says 2 and FP are coming
-51 arcade league, 32 challenges. Challenges are a mix of whole series (including FP's uplink basketball) with some originals
-Enemy AI is...exactly what you'd expect from TS really. They don't spam special dodge bullshit like in FP though

Also as much as I appreciate the expansion on the worldbuilding. I have to say my favorite part about Cultist Simulator was how vast, unknowable and mysterious it all seemed. Book of Hours and this kind of gives me the vibe that there is an established world with rules, entities and events, while CultSim made it all sound vague in a good way.
In fact I really like my headcanon of how it's impossible to know how much of the occult stuff is even real and how much of it is just in your character's head, in the vein of The Repairer of Reputations from King in Yellow.

And I keep forgetting this game takes place in the Cold War. For some reason I always think it's in the interwar period. Maybe because CultSim feels very 1920s and BoH is kinda timeless on account of being an isolated island.

I did this by just holding block, completely negating > 90% of all attacks in the game

Darksouls is piss easy if you go magic, pyromancy OR miracles, all of which quickly scale to the point of 1 shotting all basic enemies and killing bosses in actual seconds

Ie, slower to kill and less safe than any of the above
Or just blocking, which negates all but 3 attacks in Darksouls 1,2 of which are DLC and one of which you're supposed to lose to

i think breach wanderers is the only other one in this entire "genre" ive played that even felt designed by a single remotely competent person and its ruined by being an absolute insane grindfest thanks to being a mobile port

Cross Blitz just left Early Access and is 1.0 now. One of the best deckbuilders out there imo, it has a roguelike mode but what makes it stand out personally is that it has 5 campaigns to build your own decks as you progress too.

It's essentially Hearthstone's mana system but with Inscryptions 4x4 grid of autoattacking units when you end turn. It rips off a lot of good mechanics from other games but has a shit load of original ones too. Unironically i have almost 600 hours playtime over the last 2 years, one of the only indies I found more replayable than Slay The Spire.

There's a shitload of different decks you can build and you can make pretty much anything extremely powerful with the right game knowledge, but the enemy bosses (if you're in hard mode at least) are built to be decent tests of your deck.

Balance is pretty tight in that all the deck types can be broken but they all still have their limits and fights that you can get countered by if you're not prepping. You start with an aggro pirate deck that's easily top tier just by stacking attack buffs on a 3 mana 2/1 that can attack twice and attacks the turn it's summoned, but then there are bosses that spam little minions that will block this card and even a boss that just has thorns on the hero so the minion dies when it touches them instantly. The more complex decks tend to have cards like pic rel where they are obvious synergy hooks, you want to put +attack on this card so it can eat more than 0 attack enemies, but it takes setup and feels earned when you actually pull it off to win a run.

Also it just made me realize again how much of a difference the little contextual skillcheck bonuses make. The fact that I had a +1 for talking the situation through with Kim outside and the various bonuses for being thorough with the investigation. It's such a small feature in the grand scheme, but it just makes you feel like meeting the game on its own terms matters and your actions are acknowledged in return. Great design.

You die in a traditional RPG. What happens? You reload a save and you're back to the world and player state you were in before the encounter.

What happens when you die in soulsslop? You drop all the XP you've accumulated so far. You're thrown to the start of a level section with all the enemies respawned between you and all that XP you've accumulated. So now to get to that XP you go through dozens of enemies that AGAIN drop shitloads of xp on top of the grave XP you pick pack up. This is the standard gameplay premise of the grave system. You get rewarded with a major power boost every time you die. How the fuck do you balance a game around this? You don't.

If you're good at the game, you need fewer attempts for each area, getting less XP and the game remains challenging
If you're bad at the game, but good enough to recover your XP most of the time, you have more XP to build a stronger character to help you beat the game
If you're so bad that you can't get through an area and keep losing your XP you're incentivized to get better at the game until you fall into one of the categories above.
I'm obviously oversimplifying and there is more that goes into it but I feel like something along those lines is the basic idea.

Check out the Spicy Stick/Burning Stake/Burned Alive mods. Burning Stake is probably the most immersive. Burned Alive is the OG mod, and Burning Stake just took it and added more fire animations so it lookslikethe donuts are actually burning instead of just hot coal foot torture like Burned Alive. Spicy Stick is just a meme mod that adds a 10% chance of having a massive flame twister appear on the burning prisoner pole(supposed to emulate finding an actual witch/narko-spawn for the more HN rp of it).

I remember when I first tried Alchemy in the game I idea-guyed a game that basically is what you described. You're some kind of doctor (or maybe an alchemist in a fantasy setting) and there's a sandbox for you to collect herbs and brew potions with the story quests and rest of the mechanics being built around that.

Still need to get back into and finish 1. I think I'm not even halfway done yet, which I'm fine with honestly, it's a great game and I don't feel an urge to hop on the new shiny game asap or anything.
A bit curious about they handle progression though, it felt very natural in 1 how you want from some random craftsman to a capable fighter (both as a player and as a character) but I'm not quite sure how well that's supposed to work in the sequel since by then you've already been a murder machine for a whole game.

Matchless Kung Fu is pretty fun or was until 1.0 broke it. Not sure if they ever fixed it. Think Kenshi but it doesn't run like total dog shit.

Journey to the West is a Slay the Spire clone that does a lot of interesting things. Its VERY poorly balanced as is the standard for chinese games (this is because its more of a "do cool things" game than a "is this cool thing op or not" design principle; IE Wukong can copy any enemy move in the entire game, no matter how overpowered, permanently), but I had a good amount of fun with it. Its easily the most fun StS clone I've played.

Cultivation Story reincarnation is a good afternoon or so of fun before you inevitably break it if you get it like 70% off. Not a strong rec, but fun for a bit.

It's got overwhelmingly positive reviews and a lot of the reviews say it's one of the genre's best.
Is it a good game for first-timers in the roguelite deckbuilder genre? I've never played any game in this genre. I heard Slay the Spire is the best game, but I've never liked its artstyle. I prefer this game's more anime-esque artstyle. If it's really that good, I would love to play it, provided of course that it's good for complete novices.

I'd do this; the intention behind the skill system is to RP Harry as a particular kind of dude, so going all in on a couple of categories is more or less the "correct" way to play.
That said, if you're the sort of person who really dislikes missing content, you can min-max your XP to get all your skills extremely high without too much difficulty.

Has the thought Actual Art Degree which gives you 10XP for every Conceptualization passive. You get it by picking enough art related dialogue choices and eventually a little thought orb will pop up

The thought Wompty-Dompty Dom Centre gives 10XP for every Encyclopedia passive. You get it by talking to the guy and his kid in front of the Feld building once the flood gate is fixed.

And obviously having those stats as high as possible gives you the most triggers. On my first playthrough I got the art-cop thing, though quite late into the game and I was still astounded at the frankly unreasonable amount of levels it gave me.

The game works by incrementing variable when you select some dialogue. Let's just say that what matters and what doesn't isn't properly conveyed. Due to that, Kim is always fully aware of what you did or said even if he's not around with only a few very specific exceptions. The same thing applies to the achievements. What the description says and what the variable that is checked represents are not the same. At all.

They're not really errors. It's more like the copotype and politics systems are very vague and open to interpretation so very normal things adds as much points as saying the most extreme thing. Other than a few exceptions they all add 1 point. Same thing with Kim's trust. It's been a while since I've read the data but iirc the only time esprit the corps gives you useful information about Kim's trust is when you make phone pranks and it goes wrong. His opinion of you go down "but only a little" (the same as any lowering except for the really bad ones like calling him a monkey fucker which lowers his rep by 2 or 3 if you go out of your way to pick the worst possible answers). Refusing to tell Kim about your interaction with Klaasje results in the same -2 rep for being unprofessional.
This has a few quirks like for example if you apologize to him after calling him a monkey fucker, you increase his rep by 1 and skip the dialogue that lowers his rep. So the interaction was a net positive.

They don't, though.
I've had saves over 70 gigabytes and they don't load slower nor use any more memory than any other world.
In fact, they load a bit faster when flying around because there is no need to generate a ton of new shit as you move rapidly, just load it from disk. Less CPU use and the amount of data to be streamed is low by modern vidya standards. There is some overhead involved in loading older data to newer versions since it has to be converted and go through all kinds of sanity checks but that's a one-time thing.
And memory use is mostly tied to your session length, how much of the map you've loaded and keeping unsaved in memory. Save to flush shit to disk. However this shouldn't be a big deal if unless you're flying. Ground vehicles are way too slow to cause memory issues outside edge cases like driving nonstop for several IRL hours without saving or maybe playing on an old phone with severely limited memory.

Nevertheless I do trim my CDDA worlds, it's useful for a couple of reasons. One, to save disk space. Two, to regenerate new terrain near you. The game generates way too many overmaps around you so migrating to new version terrain is always a loong trip.

I'm gaining a new appreciation for the game by trying to not powergame it with my notes again and go off what the game gives you. I forgot how much hints you get just from crafting the intermediate recipe which ALL are indicated by making the apprentice of its aspect, eating honey tells you it's an ingredient for skinshuck mead, 7 shards tells you about Invincible audacity AND winning move's recipe, eating pyrus tells you you can use wood to make them, and there's really at least one item of almost everything found throughout the house which gives you a modest amount of hints what you can craft. If you get lucky you can get a hint to make Iotic essence from the start, which tells you how to make Orpiment, which will clobber 3 book principles for you with some patience for the recipe chain.

Some recipe branches still suck though. If the first thing you roll is some shit like the chimeric larva or the periost into year tally from rhyme and remembrance, have fun making use of THAT shit. I thought there'd be ONE shrine where you can slot it + a liquid to make nillycant since they're the only thing that take marks until like the underground workbenches, but No! It's literally worthless. Its ONLY use is to make winter crafts, and the ONLY use for these is... the things it can't help make. Why the fuck don't mark count as devices so you can at least read with them?

I decided to check out Cross Blitz and it's impressing me so far. The story mode cutscenes are a bit overkill so I'm pacing myself on it, but I love a game that actually has campaigns for the cards, this reminds me of a more traditional game Inscyption. I only peeked into the roguelike a little bit but already found some crazy shit you can pull off so once I finish the first story I'll try more of that.

I like it if it's the focus, but I really dislike arbitrary crafting. Like how in Far Cry 3 you need alligator skin for an inventory upgrade and then sharkskin for the next tier of upgrade with no logic to it other than making you hunt various animals.
Also in the Stalker Gamma mod, which goes for this whole realism approach, crafting is one of the main way to progress, so your guy can just sit down by the campfire and solder together a military grade NOD and a state of the art anomaly detector from a box of capacitors and some copper wire.

To be honest this is a major problem with most RPGs, the main quests are written without the side quests in mind. It's always "Go quick, the world is in danger you need to do the next things asap!" and you either need to suspend your disbelief a little to take a break from that or skip the side content.
But I agree with anon that the main appeal of the game is being a bit of a life sim, even if I personally tried to err on the side of caution when it came to the law. But being a wandering knight riding from town to town, stopping by to buy provisions and gamble was really appealing to me

When you arrive at the gates of New Vegas you need a certain amount of money to pass, which you most likely don't have at that moment in the game. So unless you pass a skillcheck you either have to do sidequests to earn the money or do sidequests to unlock one of the alternate routes into the city. Good stuff.
Now that I think about it, I guess Disco Elysium also has the main quest depend on some time sensitive events every now and then, so you have downtime to do side content while you wait for a certain time of day.

Funny you mention hunger systems, because I have a vague half memory about trying to get three meals per day in in these types of games and it actually being way too much food. But I get that it's always going to be hard to get survival meter tight, you want them to be a challenge and motivator to earn money, set up food production or however else you deal with them, but at the same time they shouldn't become a chore. I remember that at the start I disliked him, but in the DLC I ended up loving him like a brother. Gotta respect a man that likes sex and alcohol.

Anyway don't know if keep up with the hunting trip with Sir Capon, grind in the combat arena with whatever the name of the trainer was(somehting with R I think), to gain more sword experience. Pick herbs now that I have Leg Day perk to increase strength, go exploring to grind Vitality, grind more Marigold Concotions for money and better gear or what.
Open world games offers a lot of possibiliy. Maybe I will try to sneak around and do some of the miller's quests, as for them you don't really need stats, just being sneaky like a mouse.

Oh you just remembered me that I have it, its neat but I personally really dislike the constant rising heat when doing missions because its like the game cant fucking decide if it want to be tacticool with stealth (you start mission in the dark a la xcom2) or a fast paced tacticool game, because its either you come in stealthily and get pressured to move fast which depending on the layout may not be viable. The issue is that heat rise up every turn and action you take in stealth mode, but going gungho from the get go mean you'll have so much heat by the end of the mission that youll have to lay low for a long while afterward.

Ill probably retry with that one mod that remove the rising heat in stealth mode.

Voin is pretty neat, nicely detailed maps and novel way to change the difficulty (you basically choose using 3 customizable sliders that respectively control the quantity of enemies, their strenght and the likelihood of elites spawning) and you can get some gnarly weapons, I recall I had an hammer that would augment in damage the greater the distance walked so id smash the mobs then sprint to the elites and clubber them into mush, or vice versa. And it favor exploration as there are many secret chests and the likes hidden all over the maps.

Like with diagnosing every other "problem" of stupid dwarves not doing things, the answers are usually:
- The job is inaccessible due to a locked door or collapsed bridge building or flood or burrow or some other shit
- There are no idle dwarves for the duration you've watched it, because you've flooded their to-do list with other jobs that need to get done first (smoothing/engraving stone surfaces has had absurdly high priority in the past)
- None of your dwarves are doing the job because they simply don't have the permission to do the job enabled in their jobs list.
- Your remaining living dwarves are too injured or diseased and are all in the hospital
- You didn't activate the job on the job site, ie you made the minecart forbidden, so the dwarves can't interact with it
- You didn't setup the job correctly, enabling a matching set of features on the hauling list as you should've done on the stockpile

Just read the fucking wiki and follow the step-by-step, same story as with everything else involving modern Dwarf Fortress versions.

For memories, I keep a separate "re-read for memories" section apart from the rest, and write it down in obsidian. I have a second monitor. Some books I know by heart before reading them.
For crafting, by this point I've memorized most recipes and a handful of the better skills, and the game keeps track of which skills have known recipes for the playthrough.
For this playthrough, it's the first time I installed a mod that makes leveling up easier by using unique memories instead of X of matching aspect. It's cheating but I'm on to a dozen playthroughs and level 6+ skills just get really fucking tedious after a while.
But really, it's a lot more comfortable with a second monitor and obsidian. Autocomplete and links makes editing and navigation very smooth, the game has built in copy-paste to make editing quick, and a few color plugin makes it look pretty nice.
It's a lot of work to effectively make your own wiki, but I find the two pair very well.

If you're good at the game, and don't die, it rewards you with more tools that help you get through the level easier. It literally gets to a point where thanks to the reward chest you tend to get back exactly what you used that mission. But if you suck, and you die regularly, it takes your tools, and your weapons away, making it even harder to not suck.

The game has a brazillion weapons, and the only reason to ever use anything outside of the same super accurate silenced pistol, sniper rifle tanto combo, is for prestige objectives. Cool that the game gives you 10 different assault rifles, but what are you meant to do with them? Firing an un-silenced weapon in most places is a really fucking bad Idea. I wish there was a game that was like this, with some of the more basic issues fixed.

Yeah, I've tried that and it just didn't quite work for me. Maybe the system I came up with is shit it definitely has some redundancy in the entries or maybe I'm just not proficient enough with obsidian, but as I said it kind of just broke the flow/immersion for me to leave the game all the time, even if it's just to my second monitor.
Next time I'm on the mood for the game, maybe I'll just use the labeling system, to have a shelf dedicated to each aspect. Might not work perfectly for memories with multiple aspects but it sounds workable.

Hitman freelancer is a roguelite mode for Hitman: World of Assassination. Yeah, so basically back then they did a bit of an "episodic gaming" thing, and split hitman into that game, Hitman 2 and Hitman 3. If you click on "go to store" on this, it'll tell you that it's not even available any more standalone. It's all part of "World of Assassination" now. They're good games, and despite the flaws I'm enjoying the freelancer mode. If you enjoyed the one you are showing in the pic, I would recommend getting the whole thing on sale.

I think people overreacted a bit with Thief 2014. It certainly wasn't great, but also not as unplayable as people said. All in all it was just kinda.. mid. I see this a lot still, people acting like games that are just kinda mid are "the worst, most unplayable garbage" they've ever seen.

The granularity probably tired you out. You don't need images or to write which other cards link to it when you can just use folders and the graph view with some requests for the actually relevant stuff (memories, evolving, what skills give which card in which wisdom if you feel like it).
My cards are pretty simple, they're just name, aspects and how much description. Skills get attunement and crafting, books get lessons and memories and difficulty, a couple tables catalog sustenance/beverages for convenience, the higher end crafts get which workbenches and skills make them with which aspects for convenience, and the rest is mostly plain cards in folders.

Just in your card, the (1) (2) etc lists don't make use of auto completion, the overhead of having to update or check the card each time a new book gives it is guaranteed to give you a headache, the books are all typed in a way where you need to type the parentheses manually, and you don't at all need the skills or memories listed in it when the game tells you.

A bit late to the thread, but making builds in halls ia a bit more involved than most other games of the genre (a very low bar, but still), each ability has its own different upgrades and different ways you can build them, you can use perks of other heroes by equiping certain marks, there is a lot of flexibility.

I also don't do Lore entries of characters or events at all, I use grep to search for books which mention relevant stuff for the further stories. Salons are only "sorted" by playthrough with their text and guests. I thought about doing a database of which guests interact and what text it gives you but never bothered.

I think expectations play a lot into it.
When it came out I didn't understand the hate, I just thought it was kinda boring and I never finished it. But after playing the original Thief, I totally get it.
This is one of those cases, where just a title change would have been enough to change the reception of a game. Fallout 4 and Bioshock Infinite come to mind aswell

It's Book of Hours, which is akin to Cultist Simulator in regards to esotericism (they're both made by the same guy). You play as a librarian in the game, and it helps to actually act like one irl so you know what books give what, what skills make what, etc.

Actually the moon lord always drop 2 of its 9 possible items so technically the drop rate is 1/9 followed by a 1/8 drop but mathematically, it's still 22.22% because you have 1/9+1/8*8/9 chance to get a specific drop.

Finally decided to get Tavern Keeper.
Pretty cozy so far. Obviously still Early Access, so I'm curious to see for how long the content lasts, but with these play forever type games I mind EA less.
I thought the character design would bother me more, but it doesn't. Other than that this is the first tavern game I've seen that I actually like the look of mostly by the virtue of it just having a consistent looking style, I think
I have some pet peeves like Tavern footprint being predetermined by the map you choose, multi story buildings not being a thing and some of the writing being a little cringe, but I can easily live with that compared to how tight the rest of the game feels.

The payoff in F&H is so crazy when you play this shit mostly blind and figure things out yourself. I feel so powerful compared to flailing around with a little girl, wild dog, and a shifty backstabber as my party on my first run. Although I'm probably gonna hit a brick wall when the Noita tier """puzzles""" show up.

If you find a noice place to hunker down, you can easily outshoot the entire garrison. I mean, Colorado realy isn't as bad as most people make it out to be, but killing every NPC on a map with a shotty or assault rifle really isnt that hard either.
