Honestly I think the freedom fighter discourse is a little force. The reason they are hated has nothing truly to do with character redundancy or quality of writing. The games are not good in that regard at all. It has everything to do with the fact that the principle freedom fighter is Sally Acorn and her dynamic with Sonic is impossible with the Sonic that fans of the games are familiar with. They associate her and the freedom fighters with that, their minds immediately go to the worst possible aspects of Archie and they dismiss it wholesale as an archaic drama factory that has nothing to do with Sonic. SA2 didn't invent that, that's just what Tails is. It sounds like you just have SatAM specific nostalgia for that version of Tails and you use what's stated of his original Sonic 2 incarnation to support that SatAM version of the character in your head, rather than what the games have actually portrayed themselves.

Acting like Tails was never a "genius" when one of his solo titles literally has him using a ton of different gadgets in a workshop, and Sonic the Fighters also has him build an entire rocket, not to mention being stated to love tinkering with technology since day 1, is just complete and utter madness and denial of basic reality.
