Whenever I ask a Shadouge fan to explain what they want from the pairing they either point to the beach scene from 06 or Archie. I don't fully understand the beach scene example since Shadow comes across as placid at best. But I do follow along when it's Archie since Shadow is suddenly extremely personable. It still does not read to me as Shadow or Rouge. I wonder if the Archie dynamic would have happened if Rouge was in Prime for more than 2 minutes.

I read Archie Shadow's dialogue in the reboot and I fucking wince honestly. Ian took the "Shadow working for GUN" thing and made it his entire character. I understand that there may have been a point in time where he actually was intended to be a GUN agent in the games, Sonic X did the same thing with Rouge, but it is extremely weird seeing these two and especially Omega act as agents of the law. This reboot is supposed to be more like the games and you still have oddities like Shadow treating Sally's father as an authority figure. Not a fan.

If you've ever read a Sonic fanfiction featuring Shadow, he doesn’t behave like that. When you see fanart of him, chances are he doesn't act like that either. Any IDW or Archie comics with Shadow in them? They're not in-character. The same is likely true for the rest of the cast, but grasping Shadow seems particularly difficult for people.Once you make this mental shift to discarding a lot of the English content, it becomes so much easier to see where Sega is coming from and to grasp who Shadow really is. It was amazing how most of my frustration with Sega's statements just...went away. Now it's the fanbase I'm frustrated at instead. I think Sonic fans should familiarize themselves with some basic Japanese concepts, but they won't. For example, his 僕 pronoun is important to his personality, and Japanese fans love to talk about it. New Japanese fans feel happily surprised by it. But it's not present from English.Japanese is a language that resists direct translation into English. If you only rely on the English dubs, you will absolutely get things wrong and become confused about what SoJ is really saying. This is a big reason why so many Sonic fans started to aggressively attack Sega over mandates, because the English dubs and fan interpretations are so different from the authentic Japanese canon that Western fans end up imagining an entirely different character in their minds.
