People who think drawing parallels between Tails and Sonic with Gohan and Goku is taking the "DBZ influence" too hard simply doesn't understand that such a dynamic has shown up in almost every long lasting media and IP.The core idea here isn't that Tails is "supposed to surpass Sonic" as the main character. Tails isn't Sonic, simple as. Everyone including the people in charge of the plot recognize this. He's going to have a completely life, events, stories, arcs and development sometimes completely separate from Sonic. It's just that Sonic taught him the core philosophy of believing in himself and always striving forward and also he is a personal and dear friend to Tails and the relationship is not one-sided whatsoever. Tails willfully gives his skills, talents, habits, time, money and literal house and furniture to him as both thanks and because Tails sees him as a real brother. Not a friend but an actual older sibling to learn from.The idea that "Tails is Gohan and Sonic is Goku" is a simplification of not just one but dozens of the same idea and archetype that has proven to be a stable in good storytelling to even young infants on some level. It's not to say "Tails will surpass Sonic". It's to say that Tails will, if his character was ever allowed to naturally grow, would split off from Sonic and find his own destiny and path in inspiration from him and from leads a much more fulfilled and realized life than most others ever could, especially the villains.Tails stagnation as a character is to the direct detriment of Sonic's character since Tails is supposed to be, by design, Sonic's main foil.
