No matter what people say FF7 DID feel like a early 2000s game and that's what made it so good. The whole oppressive nature of it, the mysterious foreboding with the Cloud scenes, the focus on identity, capitalism, environmentalism. It's all great. I'm playing remake/rebirth now and it's pretty downplayed here more for character building which is fine. but less is honestly more and making everyone more into netflix-ish anime tropes felt like a miss to me imo.
