As to why it's because at those levels improvement is just getting better at tactics, they spend 90% of their time in dull closed positions waiting for their opponents to hang something unprovoked never learning to attack or how to find set up/find tactics, a lot of those types also play .scam bots which reward that play style

Black - Latvian Gambit

good decision. you will more consistently get fun games that rarely trade down in to endgame grinds. the key secondary thing to prepare, as needed as you encounter this, is how to respond to people who absolutely refuse your gambits to the point that they make their positions difficult to play. you will be better there but it's a different type of game than you were originally intending with the gambit lines. you can prep additional gambits/clearance sacrifices in this case instead of taking your +1.5 or whatever and trying to convert that.

Probably less than 0.1% of chess players play offline tournaments. If you're one of those, you probably don't need help finding them.

OP should contain information relevant to the masses.

>>549780692
It's 2025; grandpa. No one wants to waste his time traveling to clubs and playing a few games when you could play 20 games online in the same amount of time.
And extremely few people want to make chess a life goal and play on offline tournaments, as opposed to just a hobby.

Against 1.d4 players who are lower rated beginners trying to play a slow safe game, the Englund Gambit 1. e5 can be very disruptive and will get them out of their comfort zone. There are two main variations after white accepts, Nf6 or d6. I prefer the d6 double pawn gambit. Dutch Defense is also very good to play and then you can use that against Nf3 and c4 setups. Yes the Englund Gambit is fairly dubious but really at the lower levels many people playing d4 are only doing so because of fear of sharp games, or big egos and thinking that they’re more advanced than they really are.

To answer your question about French, Sicilian, or Caro-Kann responses while working on your King’s Gambit against e5, I have a straightforward repertoire. Just play d4 against every one of those systems. Now for the French, check out the French Exchange Variation: Monte Carlo variation. Against the Caro-Kann, play the Panov-Botvinnik Attack, which is pretty much the same setup, just doing the exchange and then attacking the center with c4. Against the Sicilian you will be fine playing the Smith-Morra which a lot of other people on this board recommend.

Okay, sorry, don't want to post too many of my games, but this one is so good.

I blasted out 9 moves of theory against the Chudo Kann. Had a huge advantage when he didn't know how to handle the Two Knights.

I was up 2 pawns, then on move 17 he thought he had e5 with tactics related to the queen pinning the pawn. But I calculated the line out perfectly and ended up with an exchange and a pawn with better pieces.

98% accuracy Chudo Kann demolition. This is why I choose the Two Knights, there's no way that's how they want the game to go when they play 1...c6

Show some goddamn respect to the reigning Asian individual blitz champion, edging out opponents such as the 6th best women’s player in China and an old Russian babushka as well.

But for real, she has been on a heater in blitz recently and I think she has a real opportunity to make some noise at World Rapid and Blitz. If she makes the final 4 playoff round I want to be able to say “I saw her first.” We’ll see though; I give her my energy no matter what

openings are only as important as the main ideas that you can gain from them
some openings are passive, others more active, in a way they determine your playstyle
if you don't like your openings, try a new one until you find one that you really like

with any openings you should learn the general theme and ideas
some openings have many themes and ideas, and even ideas on top of ideas, with many good moves (a flexible opening)
some openings just have one theme and idea with only one good move (usually gambits)

if you are super lazy about openings, read more about José Raúl Capablanca and learn from him
>>
>>549865535
Will do. I don’t even know how I didn’t realize that there’s a definitive idea and theme for openings. Like, esoterically I understood that but never cared to really look into WHY people choose these openings. Thanks for the reminder and I’m gonna do just that.

Thanks anons. I ended up scrapping it for the elephant because it's still a very aggressive choice and the engine really does seem to hate it quite a bit less than the latvian. I also decided to learn the fantasy when playing against the caro instead of the panov. Here’s my list so far. I'd like to play these up until I'm at least 2000 online (currently 800 rapid on CC). Thoughts?

White (E5) - King’s Gambit
White (E6) - Milner-Barry Gambit
White (C5) - Smith-Morra Gambit
White (C6) - Fantasy Variation

Black (E4) - Elephant Gambit
Black (D4) - Dutch Defense
Black (C4) - Anglo-Dutch Defense

Definitely good enough for 2000 rapid. The main issue will be getting the king's gambit to a playable state because there is way too much shit that black can try against it... but I guess it will feel rewarding if you do the homework.

I can’t believe it’s been a year already. I remember watching the match just a day before my Math exams, desperately wanting gukesh to somehow win out of a completely drawn position. Magnus said that the position was 99% a draw, and there is only a 1% chance that Gukesh would win this. I took a break from the stream to practice Math because I knew that there was no point in watching the stream, as it will end in a draw. It was around 8 minutes. Boom, Gukesh won in those 8 minutes. Best champion ever.

The honest answer, is the longest time control that you can stand playing without getting bored and using a lot of your time. Ideally, you'd be playing classical time controls for improvement, but it's really hard for beginners to use the time effectively. 10+0 is a good place to start, but if you can play longer games, I would do that.

Just try not to move instantly, take time on every move and try to understand what your mistakes are.

semi-related but i find that just by focusing and actually calculating for every piece (yours and the opponent's), you will find any number of good moves and basically double your elo
drawback is that obviously you will take up a lot of time which is way too limited in blitz, at least for a beginner
pro players have the experience and skill to essentially 'know' when to start calculating deeply and how much time they should spend on it

which is why i think that beginners should start on rapid, get the feel and skill for calculating a small amount of moves because they have some time for it, but not too much that they get too confused or bored
and then they should move on to a longer time format when they are able to calculate a larger number of variations
>>
>>549806610

Capablanca and Bobby Fischer both lost against it and Judith Polgar used to play it for some wild attacking games.

I’m a fan of the Elephant Gambit too but I still think the Latvian gets overlooked, and I think it is complementary to KG because it’s basically like you’re playing the King’s Gambit with the black pieces

Second this. The rating climb goal was fun, but not all that important. Simply watching the game play out, listening to your thoughts during the game, and hearing the analysis afterwards was the primary source of entertainment and there's a lot of other gimmicks you can use besides just rating climbs as well like viewer challenges, chess variants, competing in arenas, etc.

Pretty sure he didn't die right after he did the last stream. The next day after his final stream he played in the the Comet open. If you watch the last stream you can see Benjamin Bok and others in the chat telling him he has a big tournament the next day and its more important than streaming and to go to sleep. And Bortnyk went over to his house and was telling him off camera to go to sleep there is a tournament tomorrow.

https://liquipedia.net/chess/Comet_Open/2025/Titled

After he shut the stream down he likely went to sleep, and the next day woke up and beat Bluebaum and then lost to Alireza, then he played some games online after this, then at some point between october 18th night time to october 19th evening he died, because they found the body on the evening of octover 19th.

He’s a certified loser. But like you, I too liked his lichess v .cum videos. But, alas, his true devious nature came out during the danya shit.

How can any chess player worth a shit not see how wrong this Kramnik character assassination is? All it takes is to view it whilst removing your own emotions from the situation and you’ll see Kramnik literally had nothing to do with Danyas death and even though Kramnik is socially inept, he doesn’t deserve the hate campaign.

They want Kramnik, who beat the likes of Anand and Kasparov, just to name a few, to lose his GM title over all of this shit. Fuck jack shart.
>>
>>549953341
In his final stream a lot of gms were aborting, is there any footage from their perspective? Like if Hans or someone had been streaming that night and reacting to the Danya shit show
>>
>>549953823
There might be. But what’s more telling is if you rewatch his stream and just watch the live chat. There were many there pleading with him.

Stjepan has a reasonably pretty, employed, stable wife who for some reason puts up with his bullshit and seems to be partially funding his doomed quest to get any better than 2000. He won the lottery.

>>
>>549955638
Yeah he literally copy and pasted it directly into this thread. Totally gave me a schizophrenic moment.
>>
>>549954925
yeah, he's never gonna advance in chess. He's got the agadmator youtube chess level where 99% of his "strength" is merely being a bad player, but telling people what stockfish thinks about positions and spending 1000 hours trying to memorize what stockfish thinks about some specific niche opening.

At 40+ years old, that means opponents can simply go into any random position they want any second of the game and the tard-memorizer will immediately have to make his next youtube video explaining "stockfish actually says I was better on move 12, but I uhh, didn't find this c5 push idea and so I lost the game and got last place in the tournament"

This is why there's such a big separation between "chess youtuber" and actual "chess players". It's largely the chess prodigies who ever escape shitter-land - because when they start at like 8 years old like pragg/hikaru/nepo/vidjit/karjakin, they've already learned the focus is on becoming good on endgames and advanced puzzles, then openings are just the thing you pick up over time that helps to get a very slightly better endgame.

But endgame and puzzles get exactly 0 youtube views, as 99.9999% of youtube is people desperate to get handed an automatic winning opening full of traps - so the stjepan types will reach 40-60 years old without ever having gotten as strong at endgames as a 14 year old indian prodigy, and the prodigy will improve his openings year by year, while the 40-60 year old's endgame technique instead gets worse year by year while aging.
>>

I think it's funny that she is working in the background of his last video. Like he couldn't turn the camera or go into another room to record? lol

Unironically this series:

https://youtu.be/p8pZbhjL-fQ?si=82C67LpIz73O2iEJ

He also did a v2 recently and updated a few things but the original series from 4 years ago is still the GOAT to me. When I got back into chess this helped me get back over 1000 in a few weeks of studying and watching each episode of this a couple times each.
>>
>>549957004
Yeah. All you need to know is that he was so volatile off camera that he literally gave another grown man (Bortnyk) keys to his home in order to do welfare checks on him (as seen by his last stream). This was just the first turn Danya was sloppy with the situation coincidentally he died shortly after. But yeah, as far as live reaction footage of other GMs playing him, I dont think there is any, as interesting it would be to see.

>>549957795
This is why I have to play chess strictly at night. I’ve tried so hard to keep a level head going into winning end games and I just start to shit the bed because most of the time my adrenaline starts pumping so hard that I get stressed out. My entire day could potentially be ruined if I go into an endgame where I’m completely winning and manage to blunder against an Indian.

I hate feeling like I’m essentially in a life or death situation and need to close in on the kill. It’s incredibly stressful so when I lose like that I just get so disappointed in myself. It was negatively impacting my life. So much so that essentially I only play at night.

I second building habits even as someone who started after it was released, it goes against traditional principles about how you "should" learn but it's an extremely practical approach of fast-tracking you to the lower-intermediate level where many more resources are open to you, it's probably the best approach to start enjoying online games as a beginner without wasting your time.
I think the idea that you should brute-force a working knowledge first and only then learn the underlying principles is applicable to a lot more than just chess too, but that's a rant for another day

Chess is 99% intuition. The only purpose of heuristics is to indicate the direction towards which you should be honing your intuition during training. Adult improvers get it the wrong way around and think heuristics is supposed to guide you during actual play, that is why they suck.
Last but not least, the main thing leading the direction in which your intuition is developing during training should be the study of master games, not heuristics.
>but anon, [supergm] always names some sort of heuristic when explaining his moves in post-game interviews!
Post-hoc rationalisation. Intuition cannot be communicated.
>>
>>549957795
that's the opposite of my usual. if i'm in an endgame i know is winning and already know generally how, it's routine i may as well be playing a bot at that point. assuming no time pressure.

>>The King's Gambit has lost popularity, but not sympathy. Analysts treat it with kid gloves and seem reluctant to demonstrate an outright refutation. "The Chessplayers Manual" by Gossip and Lipschutz, published in 1874, devotes 237 pages to this gambit without arriving at a conclusion. To this day the opening has been analyzed romantically - not scientifically. Moderns seem to share the same unconscious attitude that caused the old-timers to curse stubborn Steinitz: "He took the beauty out of chess."

>To the public, the player of the King's Gambit exhibits courage and derring-do. The gambit has been making a comeback with the younger Soviet masters, notably Spassky (who defeated Bronstein, Averbach and myself with it). His victories rarely reflected the merits of the opening since his opponents went wrong in the mid-game. It is often the case, also, as with Santasiere and Bronstein, that the King's Gambit is played with a view to a favorable endgame. Spassky told me himself the gambit doesn't give White much, but he plays it because neither does the Ruy Lopez nor the Giuocco Piano.

>The refutation of any gambit begins with accepting it. In my opinion the King's Gambit is busted. It loses by force.

in atomic chess, if you take a pawn or piece, all other pieces other than pawns in the 3x3 circle go kaboom

in duck chess every turn you make one move then get a 2nd move to teleport a duck somewhere, it's invincible and you cant move through it

atomic is the most offensive chess variant, duck is the most defensive chess variant in existence, so I'm fucking around combining both of them

Average life expectancy of the US is 72
Average chess.com rating is 500
Danya died when he was 29

This makes his ELO at staying alive roughly 90 chess.com at a peak but probably settling around an ELO of 65
>>
>>550009208
Ok, but by that metric my chess rating is the equivalent of living to 300, and I'm a total shitter.
>>
>>550009928
If you're top 99 percentile it'd be the equivalent of living til 100, but you can't know your Elo at staying alive until you die

He's right, Lichess is objectively the better chess site, but I still play on CC because my entire club is full of normies who exclusively play there. A lot of these people have been playing casually online for years before joining the club and had never even heard of Lichess until our coach set up a private study for us there. It just goes to show that we "internet" people often misunderstand how most casual players / normies actually think. They Google "chess", click the first result, see CC, and never look any further. Popularity beats quality every time, and that's the real reason Lichess will never be on top, no matter how much better than CC it is.

lichess is objectively worse. It doesn't have duck chess or the 90 other actual good variants, just the gaylord variants from 40 years ago only.
>>
>>550022176
Titled Tuesday, higher-rated opponents, and the fact that some of them definitely get paid to play there. We have a couple of GMs, some IMs (as well as quite a bit of NMs and FMs obviously), and I'd be shocked if at least a couple of them haven't signed contracts to exclusively play on CC by now.

There are a million GMs on lichess

>>550023162
detecting cheating costs money, lichess is free, therefore it's perpetually infested with pajeet cheaters eternally. That alone is enough reason to not touch it with a ten foot pole except to play twitch streamers you know arent cheating in casual games
>>
>>550023282
Respectfully, did you even read what I wrote or are you just being dense? What does a couple of GMs being regulars at my club have to do with the fact that a lot of other GMs also play on Lichess? Your comment doesn’t even make sense. Regardless, it's not a coincidence that all of our titled players (not only the GMs) play on CC.

people already programmed most of the variants, lichess just refuses to add any of them and leaves them on an obscure fork website pychessorg which has 10 total users to chesscom's website page's 2000+ active users. This guarantees variants are eternally dead on lichess and pychess as with only 10 players, there's zero people ever working on anti-cheat or anti-trolling or competitions (unlike chesscom which hosts variant tourneys and championships for money)

So there's zero reason to ever leave chesscom.

the first world champ in modern chess history (meaning the rules after queen was added to the game) is the American Paul Morphy, a Louisiana boy who fought for the Confederacy (the right side) in the civil war, and went to europe and took a steaming shit over 100% of the chess players over there, got bored and came home.

The second "world champ" made the hans niemann gambit of hoping the players better than him will age out, retire and die beforehand because he'd never actually win a tournament against them ever.

did he? If it was WW1, I'd need to know if maybe his diagnosis started for "noticing" when bankers took the entire world hostage using compounded interest loans on weaponry to britain, france and germany which were impossible to pay back for either side except by destroying the other country to give them to the bankers. (Rubinstein could've been a real schizo, I'd need to see the paperwork to say yes/no. I've read letters from people with the actual physical disease who make claims like they've invented the question mark... but in 1910 diagnosis might've not been sound)
>>
>>550045696
He was institutionalized shortly before the start of WW2. I wondered how a Polish Jew who was expected to become a talmudic scholar by his family (but decided to become a chess player), was able to survive Nazi occupied Belgium.
This story came from a Euwe book:
>He finished his life in a mental asylum in Antwerp. During the war these asylums were sometimes exploited as refuges by resistance workers. Nazi investigators once descended on the place and asked Rubinstein, “Are you happy here?” “Not at all”, Rubinstein replied. “Would you prefer to go to Germany and work for the Wehrmacht?” “I’d be delighted to”, Rubinstein replied. “Then he really must be mad”, the Nazis decided.

>The second "world champ" made the hans niemann gambit of hoping the players better than him will age out, retire and die beforehand
By your chronology (Morphy being the first world champ) Steinitz would be the second, and he didn't dodge challengers.
>>
>>550052163
I think he meant Fischer.
>>
>>550052163
steinitz entirely dodged paul morphy. His nickname was even "the austrian morphy" and he waited until Morphy quit playing chess after so many years unable to find anyone able to compete with him (Morphy even made it mandatory to play with opponent getting extra material odds so it was a more fair fight, since not even Adolf Anderssen - the other guy on Steinitz level - could come close to Morphy in a match)
>>
>>550052659
Nah, Fischer is the second American world champ and took the more typical Magnus approach of winning and then realizing world champs paid too little and were too much hassle with FIDE's shitty rules so told FIDE to go suck a nut and crown any random hobo instead.
>>
>>550052163
also, Emanuel Lasker followed steinitz precedent of being a coward which is the only reason he never faced Rubinstein who would have given him a thrashing. The early champs were pretty much a joke, the guy who was champ got to choose who he wanted to play and how many millions of dollars (Adjusted for inflation) you'd have to fund to play him.
>>
>>550050186
I don’t know if “Louisiana boy” is accurate, it kind of implies he was a regular bumpkin or something. His family was part of a (at the time) very European New Orleans elite. Also he offered to help the Confederate generals with strategy cuz he must be good at battle strategy because he plays chess (lol) but they told him to shut up, nerd.
>>
>>550053054
Steinitz professional chess career didn't start until Morphy had retired. His first international tournament was in 1862.
>steinitz entirely dodged paul morphy
Steinitz entirely went to New Orleans in 1883 and ambushed Morphy in the street because Morphy wouldn't respond to his letters. They talked, but Morphy told him he was done with that chess shit.
>>550053927
I don't disagree about Lasker, though his method of dodging was making idiotic match demands that his challengers either couldn't afford ($5000 in early twentieth century money, which is why Rubinstein never got to play him) or weren't stupid/desperate enough to accept (telling Capablanca in 1912 that he had to win the match by +2 to be called world champion).
>>
>>550053054

Morphy had already retired from competitive chess by the time Steinitz became one of the world’s leading players. The only me who arguably have “avoided” a match with Morphy was Howard Staunton
>>
>>550054918
it's not like Steinitz was a 8 when Morphy retired. That's Steinitz waiting until both are nearly _50_ before ambushing Morphy in a random street after Morphy had given up on shitty low paying tournament play against constant disappointing players.
>>
>>550055047
"I didn't become a leading player until you retired" is code word for "I was a pussy and had to wait 30 years to avoid playing you"

Imagine if I intentionally can play Magnus today and instead wait 12 more years on purpose so that I can ambush him in a random street when he's 47 to declare Fight Me Now Magnus!

No, grow a dick and play in your 20s and 30s like an actual athlete not a Steinitz vagina.
>>
>>550055857
* and it's not like he didn't know who Morphy was. Steinitz was reading newspapers about Morphy for decades, hiding from him, hiding from him, hiding from him, waits until Morphy quits chess and is running a law firm, to finally pretend to be willing to play Morphy.

many variants are nice because draws don't exist. Duck, chaturanga, atomic, threecheck, etc. are almost always one side wins one side loses.
That's 1934 games with 0 draws in my blitz run.
If one player is even 5% better than the other, they can just keep playing until eventually the other guy makes a small mistake, unlike chess where you can be 5-10% better and still like 70% of move choices lead to possible draw systems for opponent.

Currently at 1934 matches on blitz ladder with exactly 0 draws. If they play better they could dirty flag me or beat me, but they can't draw.
>>
>>550063468
An anon mentioned disliking the term as used by chess commentators, claiming it was incorrect English and probably mistranslated from the Russian (he said it should be "must win situation"); then another anon created a controversy about it by pretending to be different anons arguing over it, spamming the general in turn. Now it's a /chess/ meme.
>>
>>550060297
that's a tapir, which is most closely related to odd-toe ungulates like horses rather than actual pigs. Hence it has all the weird anatomy of a horse (teeth, nose, ears) yet because it's a lazy south american and indonesian version, it sits around all day eating junk and moving slowly with none of the speed of a horse which is the horse's only redeeming cool factor.

There's no tapir opening in chess because tapir are a slow and weak animal, so you'd need an opening as slow as the hippopotamus, except with zero of the defensive value and pieces defending themselves. It'd need to be some time-wasting shuffling opening like the bongcloud where you swap all your knights and bishops starting squares or something.

Is castling a meme?
Almost every time I play London I'm better off just attacking with kingside pawns and rook instead of castling.
>>
>>550063893
That’s cool but it seems like people really make these chess memes on demand
>>
>>550065135
correct. His king can't make any moves towards h or he instantly loses on c-d. His own pawn is 4 instead of 3 from queening so he can't pawnrace if kings stand still (and rubinstein's king is in the promotion box anyway.) And his king can't spare a single step to c-d ever or it leaves the promotion box of the h-pawn (that 4x4 grid)
>>
>>550066170
no, castling is an extremely strong move
castling as soon a possible just because it's A Thing You Should Do is a meme though
>>
>>550066170
castling is a meme, yes. It's a valid move, but it's not better to have castled than to not have castled.

Castling is specifically beneficial only when you can migrate defensive pieces to protect the castled king faster than opponent can migrate their attackers to your castle side, and when your king was unsafe in middle because opponent's exact setup gave him an available good option of ripping the center of the board open to expose the king. And when the queens are both alive so the king cannot win the endgame by running up the board to be worth an extra 4 points (attacking 8 squares per move)
>>
>>550066787
playing the king's indian defense is truly a bad meme that should be avoided.

the problem is both King's Gambit (white) and King's Indian Defense (black) are unsound openings, but KG is at least rare novelty for some people so you surprise them, while KID is super-common so it has zero novelty factor despite being a below-average defense. Better to play something dubious which opponent has to waste time thinking about because they haven't played 2000 times already.

the lie is "practice makes perfect" - that's literally a falsehood. The actual correct saying is "practice makes PERMANENT"

People who play 100,000 shitty speedchess games poorly are simply training their brain to eternally make the same shitty bad decisions for the rest of their lives. Their thinking pattern is not changing or improving in any way at all. Often their strength goes down every new game they play as they train themselves to play bad moves Faster and with LESS THINKING AHEAD and every day they're now older and shittier and their brain is less plastic and less capable of removing its bad habits than it was yesterday.

That's why a good coach will ban a player from playing sub-5minute chess entirely until they've spent years and years developing actual classical chess habits where they plan 5-10 moves ahead instead of 1 turn ahead.
>>
>>550075838
Picking up bad habits is one of the biggest fallacy memes. Practice will make you better. You won't permanently learn bad moves because you instantly get punished for them.

Some players can improve by playing blitz, while some can't. That is the way of the world because some people are dumb monkey brains. But really, who does improve period? Most players reach a certain level and then you check in once a year to them and yep, still at the same level.
That's chess.
>>
>>550076652
Is there a checkmate in this puzzle or it just getting material, like the knight?
>>
>>550077831

>>
>>550076450
you're so retarded you don't even know the meaning of the word "fallacy", you think it's a word if you include in a sentence means you win an argument despite not having even one tiny shred of any evidence.

Both physically and mentally, bad habits simply become more permanent every time they are performed. If you start out a martial art by standing in the wrong stance, with your legs placed the wrong distance apart, your body leaning the wrong way, making the wrong motions with your arms and legs, you are accomplishing less than if you do literally nothing - as every time you practice doing the wrong move, your neural pathways for that movement become more ingrained in your brain, so every time you need to make a move quickly your brain suddenly does the fucking retarded movements you've practiced unconsciously. The brain is too slow to consciously make movements at the same speed that movements are made unconsciously from repetition. This is why 99% of high level chess is about memorizing openings and patterns - it takes milliseconds for the brain to yank deeply memorized patterns out without thinking about them - but if you want to manually solve a new puzzle you aren't experienced with it might take 5 minutes looking at the position.

The dumbfuck fallacy users of the world have instead filled their shitty small weak brains with 10,000+ badly played games of shitty theory, retarded moves and incorrectly learned patterns - thus when they unconsciously pull a move out in 0.5 seconds, it's pretty much always something fucking stupid like pushing a pawn that was already defended and preventing opponents from landing in a hole. Then they tell twitch "oh man, why didn't I see this move the computer thought of" after the retard loses "I should slow down in the middle of my game for 5 minutes"
But if they slow down 5 minutes they'll make one mediocre move and time out since they don't have 30 good moves memorized now they're out of clock.

that's not chess at all. It's just a problem with human culture. The reason people don't improve is because they're so retarded they think "playing more chess means becoming better"

Playing BETTER chess means becoming better.
Playing MORE chess is like trying to become the best soldier by shooting yourself in the foot 30,000 times thinking it'll make you immune to bullets.
50 IQ people have this fictional fantasy of "exposure"
They believe if you sit there and play the music of a genius, like Mozart or Beethoven, that your IQ will increase, because genius magically rubs off on you. There's zero evidence to support that. The way a person improves their mental power is to be the person actually exerting their brain slowly learning the exact correct way to play really difficult music, or learning how to play 100% precise in a large depth of complex puzzles and opening variations, etc.

You would literally become stronger playing exactly 200x 2-hour games of chess with a coach watching your every move and correcting your mistakes and thinking patterns than you would if you play 10,000x blitz games on chesscum. And it's not a close thing, the guy after 10,000 shitter retard blitz games would be 400-1200 ELO, while the person playing 200x really advanced slow matches thinking carefully about strategy and trying to think 5-7 moves ahead every turn would probably be at least 2000 ELO by game 100 or 150 or 200.
>>
>>550079174
That would make it almost impossible for someone really good at one martial arts to learn another one, since they would have to unlearn the previous one according to you. The opposite is true. The people winning freestyle tournaments are those that use multiple styles and combine them, and not those who spent their entire lives practicing just one style. And learning new styles just gets easier since your body is already trained.

It would also make it incrementally harder to learn radically different chess openings. Yet again, the opposite is true. Ingraining bad habits is a meme. Playing more makes you better at chess, it's that simple.
If you look at games from 200 years ago, some of their moves and openers are completely wrong by today's standards, yet they were fucking legends who could calculate many steps ahead, sacrifice pieces left and right and checkmate your ass.
>>
do NOT play the Perk
>>
>>550065818
I'd count it a spiritual win if your opponent let you have enough time to do this without interference. Way harder to achieve than just the K-Q swap.
>>
>>550068934
>KID unsound
then why did Fischer win so much with it?
>>
>>550080173
Your martial arts analogy is spot on in one way: yes, repeatedly practicing the *wrong* technique ingrains bad motor patterns that are hard to unlearn—neural pathways get strengthened, and under pressure, you'll default to the bad habit. The chess community agrees on this: "practice makes permanent," not perfect. Playing thousands of blitz games without review often reinforces blunders, hanging pieces, or shallow calculation, making it tougher to break those habits later.

But here's where the analogy breaks down a bit: chess isn't purely physical muscle memory like a punch or stance. A lot of "bad habits" in chess come from poor understanding or lack of knowledge, not just repetition. If you're spamming games while repeatedly missing basic tactics or positional ideas, yeah, you'll plateau or even reinforce garbage patterns. But if you're playing longer games, thinking deeply, and (ideally) reviewing afterward, repetition builds good pattern recognition—exactly like how high-level chess relies on instantly recalling thousands of correctly learned positions and motifs in milliseconds.

Top players aren't just calculating everything from scratch every time; 99% of elite play is pattern-based intuition built from *correct* repetition (studying master games, solving puzzles properly, analyzing your own games). The guys who get stuck are often the ones grinding unanalyzed blitz, pulling out the same dumb moves unconsciously.

The original point about "ingraining bad habits is a meme" and "playing more makes you better, it's that simple" isn't entirely wrong either—*if* the play is thoughtful. Just spamming games without reflection? That's how you end up with 10,000 badly played games full of retarded theory, like you said.

Chess was more fun back in Fischer's day. Now you can just pay money to rent time on a supercomputer a billion times more powerful than DeepBlue and crunch out what systems are holdable and what openings are simply doomed.

That's part of why variants are more fun. Even the basic 960 makes it more than 900x harder to simply memorize a zero-fun-allowed full chess game as forcefed you from a computer's joyless arsehole.

We have identified a 50 IQ retard who believes in the shooting-your-foot-makes-you-immune-to-bullets theory.
You cannot "scare your brain into becoming good at chess" by stabbing yourself in the nuts each time you hang your queen.
Pain does not make your brain somehow think more intelligently.
If anything, it will just make you develop some faggot's personality where you say "HAHA I PLAY FOR FUN, I'M NOT A TRYHARD" as a defense mechanism for the retarded move. It will NOT in any way conjure up some mystical wizardry where you suddenly become able to predict 4 moves in the future.

It's really pathetic how little normal humans understand how their brain works. It's why 99% of them are too stupid to even train their dogs correctly even when it's something as simple-minded as a dog and you have all its food/toys available to control.

Will never happen, the guy who makes all the OPs here is too dedicated to keeping the general on /vg/. He’s the same guy that melts down if the OP isn’t exactly how he likes and will thread split to make his own. This general is mostly him samefagging and (since /tg/) always has been which is why he gets to dictate how and where it is. Casuals can’t tell the difference and just assume the more active thread is where everyone is at. If you tried to move to /sp/ he’d fill the genny there with seethe and this one with talk to himself about how it’s the true general, which would sway the casual passer-by. Also, most people aren’t faggots that samefag their preferred thread all day while he is, so his threads always have the impression of being more active, which means any attempt to leave would fail.
