What game are you playing this week, anon?

>Are mystery dungeon games allowed in this thread?
Generally yes, most mystery dungeon games(Shiren the Wanderer, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Etrian Mystery Dungeon, etc.) can be considered roguelikes
>Is Elin/Elona allowed?
Yes, they are roguelikes. Please do not post your Little Sister farms
>Is Dwarf Fortress allowed?
If it's adventure mode, yes. But adventure mode is boring. /tg/ has a general for fortress mode playthroughs but you can share here too!

Yeah maybe. I got mine to how I wanted it and I don't really feel the need to touch it anymore though. But gas in general is a nice way to create to create some tactical opportunities for players. Gas traps are also nice in that if a monster steps on one it can still create a problem for the player and vice versa.

How would you decide on a roguelike of the year? You couldn't really do a best "new" roguelike since most roguelikes release to the public in a 0.0.1alpha state.

oh i guess they nerfed burning down a house attracting zombies or something. you can no longer just set one on fire and hide on the edge of the reality bubble and wait till everything kills themselves and raid the empty town. thats the literal "green bar spinning" shit the other guys talking about, i guess. you can no longer just cheese and wait, so the games ruined or something
>>
>>549969081
I’ve done that, and why would you need to? Unless you massively increase zombie numbers, health, or speed. A basic melee weapon and some sneaking should make it pretty easy. You really only need to make sure you aren’t fighting 3+ zombies at once.
>>
>>549968165
>not being able to cheese raiding towns
You say that as if towns are even worth raiding even on BN.
There are only two points where I ever interact with a town. The first is during the first few days at night to sneak in and grab an acetylene torch and some welding fuel, maybe some meds or guns too if I can while completely avoiding every single zombie unless they're right next to something I want, and the second is extremely end game death mobile with multiple automated laser turrets just for fun.
There's fuck all of worth in towns. Even with mods that add new town buildings with higher qualities of loot the ratio of zombies you have to kill to loot actually worth picking up is so one sided it's absurd.

I beat Achra with far and away the worst prestige class in the game. This fucking treeform literally makes you go 5 game turns without doing anything except standing there and tanking the damage.

For context, an entire run of Achra takes 20 game turns on average. That's how fucked this class is.

Why exactly would someone "play fair" against a zombie apocalypse to begin with?
>>
How unfortunate.
>>
>>549990013
oh no i would fully expect real humans to exploit zombies that would just walk right into the nearest fire just because it made noise. id also just expect creatures that dumb to...not be a threat and the "apocalypse" to be about as bad as a minor earthquake.
but that would be a bit silly, wouldnt it. "billions are dead. the world is over. this is how you died....well, not really, its pretty trivial to survive. just, uh, set like, anything on fire and walk away for a bit. uh"
>>
>>549976353
hahahahaha zombies no longer care about noises that are too close to large fires
they can also trample out small fires without taking damage
time to switch to a new fork!!!!!
>>
>>549976353
Zombies are now hardcoded to ignore fire, and sounds next to fire. Small fires are drastically nerfed to not do any amount of damage, and monsters have an 60% chance to ignore damage entirely while in fire.
Now you can instead just light a big fire and shoot an m60
>>

You obviously have to pick the race that starts with max fire resistance.

Although I was thinking that the proper way to play Arborus might actually be to never stand still, and then you can just pretend like you don't have a class. That would be easier than turning into a fucking tree.

ngl I'm playing ToME for the first time and it is kinda ass. Feels a lot like WoW the roguelike and that's not a good thing imho.
Maybe playing a wizard is super cool? I'm playing an elf warrior (the class that uses sword and shield). Doing pretty well combat wise, currently level 38 and I just slaughter every enemy mindlessly until some boss appears, and even then most boss or elite enemies I dispath with no issues just by bumping into them and regenerating 26hp per turn but occasionally I'll run into some boss who summons a billion mooks and puts 11 different debuffs on me and that can give me some issues. Those fags die instantly in melee though.

To be fair, the lore insists that zombies were one of multiple factors, despite how portal storms are mostly avoidable by just... Getting the fuck out of dodge forever.

Hell, half the world's population count is assigned to FEMA camps and corpse pits. What would square this for you, a random chance for a building to spawn as a "burnt down" variant with all the zombies in a 20 tile radius dead, burnt and teleported into the building?
>>
>>549997579
Pretty sure that that IS Volkites, lmao.
I've wondered about it, maybe you can do something with Snakeform/Jackal guy to get yourself out of tree when you're attacked- But you have to raise your speed a lot of that to help (to 50 or so, at least, to only get triple turned once something reaches you) and THEN you need a button to press to solve the problem (when the rest of your build is "let me stand still and summon dudes")

I've never really really played with it to see if there's a way to get yourself out of the form at the end of the game turn once you spawn the dudes, I think you've got to just set up a giga retaliate/reactive healing build with it on C32
>>
>>549993964

So they make it utterly clear "that this is a safe space" and install a token flagrantly gay moderator.

And if one flagrantly gay moderator is good, isn't three better? And, hey, you wouldn't wanna be a bigot like that other guy- Shouldn't we have an #HRT-Discussion channel in our Warframe server?
>>

Still playing ToME, just finished Dreadfell. The Master and the Ukruk orc that came afterwards were no issue, but I died *twice* (playing with the default setting which apparently gives me limited lives) to some random elite enemy who spawned two copies of myself which proceeded to instakill me. Not very fun ngl.
>>
>>549993964
molotovs and fire did badly need a nerf but the way they did it is crazy.
Probably just having fires be partially extinguished when creatures walk on them so you can't exterminate and entire mall with 1 molotov and reducing the chance to be lit on fire below 100% would have been enough.
With this update molotovs are basically fucking useless as weapons which is asinine in a game where your enemies are mostly shambling undead.

And the thing with ignoring noises made by fire is just bizarre. Lighting houses on fire to distract zombies is rarely worth doing past the very early game and even then it's usually more trouble than it's worth. Why they went out of their way to implement such a heavy handed nerf to specifically that ignoring all unintended consequences is baffling.

It reminds me of how they nerfed then removed acid bombs. Originally acid bombs were better than military grenades in most contexts and extremely simple to make which did need to be nerfed. Their ultimate solution was to remove acid bombs entirely on the reasoning that acids can't actually melt people like an 80's scifi movie, yet they keep acid zombies in the game which do exactly that to the player. Harvesting the blood of acid zombies to weaponize it against them was one of the coolest things in the game and they gut it instead of nerfing it to a reasonable level.

For some reason I couldn't get my bicycle plane working again after I tested it a bit last night. Everything with the character was the exact same, so I started thinking if it was windspeed that was helping me along. And then I had an epiphany, what if I added a sail onto the bicycle to help me reach that extra speed I need to take off? Well, turns out it works, but I do need to use hydraulic muscles for the final spurt. As you can see, the speed is more than enough to get the thing airborne. And once you're in the air, you can turn off hydraulic muscles and just coast along in the air.

Just... be a bit careful about trying to fly upwind.

>>
>>550043198
I haven't tested it a lot yet, but my character is quite heavy in the power armour, so I imagine there's a bit of leeway. However there's only a single 20-litre folding wire basket on it, so you can't fit a lot on even if you wanted to. What I wanted this thing to accomplish is provide some scouting while my main craft's batteries are charging, and it works fine for that. However if you want some more serious looting you'd probably be much better off making a 1x3 or 1x4 craft with an e-motor and medium batteries, and if you're going that far, then just slap on some gyro rotors and have a small chopper. That way you can much more easily land on rooftops (planes simply can't land on there, the offroad penalty will kill your acceleration) and attach it on a bike rack when you're moving your mobile base around.

>>
>>550066897
"Horsepower" as a number was basically invented by James Watt. He imagined an experiment that would measure the force a horse can exert, but there's no evidence he ever actually did it.
Instead he just straight made up a number that conveniently put the steam engine he was selling at a number at "10 horsepower!," high enough that it was cheaper than 10 horses, so people would buy his machine.

The actual number of Horsepower per horse depends on the type of horse, but a light draft horse can easily pull 5 horsepower or more, and a bigger one can pull upwards of 30.
3 horses at 5 HP * 0.7457 kw per HP = 11.185 kilowatts, so it's not far off actually

If you've ever wondered whether there's a point to installing wings on a chopper, the answer is yes. I'm only using one enhanced electric motor and happily cruising along at 209km/h and only using a fraction of the juice I'd have to use if I were running all of them at the same time. Only use all of them for the process of taking on and accelerating and then progressively shut them down once you reach your desired speed.

I'm modding Rogue to be a Roguelite since it's open source. Is this considered distasteful behavior in this thread? For example i'm adding persistent memory across runs so if you discover/identify what an item does in a previous run (such as a scroll, potion, whatever it may be), this will persist across future runs.

So is this cool or should I kill myself?
>>
>>550218293
You can do whatever you want, it's not like people are forced to play your game.
I don't see the issue of having save state for casuls.
That said if you want persistent stuff, it might be interesting thinking about how those things can actually be used against the player on subsequent runs.
>>
>>550218293
I mean, you'd still have the bones of a traditional roguelike on your hands, is the thing.

I think most people care more about the tile-based, turn-by-turn aspect. Saves and checkpoints and permadeath are like... They're not useless but as the body of knowledge on gameplay design and mechanics expands you've got to consider what they're adding to the experience. Is permadeath really an important facet of the difficulty? Is the game really balanced around that, in terms of randomness or time investment or whatever?

So I mean, half because I just like yapping, but if you're actually working on this: Go ahead bud. No one will seethe. Just think about it like, what are you changing, what are you taking away. What does taking that away add to the experience or what are you going to replace it with to make the game play differently?

Do you just like the idea of a tourist mode or do you not think much of the item-ID mechanic or what? Me, I've been gaming for 30 fuckin years by now and (even though I'm into trad roguelikes) I don't find much to recommend about per-run item ID roulettes, though I do love identifying random items. "Wow, 20 of one scroll, 10 of another, 5 of these and 1-2 of 10 more, whatever shall I do?"

Well I have done it, it's based on the source code of Classic Rogue by Oryx Design Lab so the visuals are more based on that, of course with a toggle for ASCII, etc.

So far it's just a source build where, the main differences simply are
-Potion colors and scroll “gibberish” names are generated once and then stay fixed across future runs.
-Once you identify a potion/scroll, it stays identified for all future runs (saved immediately when it becomes known).
-Unknown items remain unknown (same as vanilla), so you still have to discover them the first time.
I already know there are way more roguelike games out there than this, so i'm not sure what else I could modify. I mean I guess I could add a save/load system for ultra casual/easy mode, but I don't think that would appeal to many people.

I'm not sure when or where I should upload it, I guess maybe Itch.io. I'm thinking about just calling it Roguelite, get it because it's Rogue...lite, like roguelites. Before I started working on this, I did find a project called Rogue Remastered, but nobody seemed to be interested in it at least from what I saw on steam, but theoretically I could add, very complex features to the game similar to what he added but for free, such as a wizard mode, or an optional tutorial, which would kind of undermine this developer which I do somewhat feel bad about, but considering this isn't actually that hard or complex to do, I don't see why I should be charging money for any of this anyways.

I'd rather just make my own modifications like these, and then just release the source code somewhere.

Anyways I feel like the Roguelike market is somewhat saturated, maybe not oversatured, but already has some amazing games that people have been working on for over a decade so, this small little modification is all i'd really want to contribute, unless someone genuinely is interested in a slightly bigger version of OG Rogue with optional roguelite features.

Another reason I haven't uploaded it yet, I could upload the source code, or a program for anyone interested, I have ran into a few issues, so I am kind of doing bugfixing on that, one is that, maybe rightfully so, but it called you a "cheater" on the guildmaster's hall of fame, it originally just changed your name to cheater aswell, which is kind of funny, but obviously that's a bit silly.

I am also not going to lie, I am getting the urge to add more content. Things I can easily add are any features that don't actually require new sprites, so this includes, new types of weapons, armors, potions, and magic scrolls, as far as I can tell with how this is coded I can add quite literally anything in terms of effects that these things can do, I can also add just about any feature you can imagine as long as it doesn't require new sprites/graphics, it's not that I can't add things with new sprites/graphics i'm just far too lazy to do such a thing.

Something i'm extremely tempted to add is a store/shop/traveling merchant, similar to modern Roguelite games to so that gold has more of a use rathern than it's current only purpose seeming to be only as score for the in game leaderboards.

I don't like things that serve no functional purpose in video games. If any of these features seem interesting to anyone or they'd like something else lemme know. Also by the way I am working on a way to disable the Roguelite mode and have it just be traditional Rogue mode with new features if I do end up feature creeping and adding a bunch of new stuff.

Update, I have been working on this next feature for what feels like several hours, and yes it is a shop, to make gold useful instead of merely just for the leaderboard.

The way that it'll work in it's current iteration is that every level from descending 1-26 to ascending 25 - 1 a shop will have a 25% chance of spawning in The Dungeon of Doom on that floor, in said shop, there will 3 rows of two items each, so 6 items total, laid out, no item will have a negative effect, and most items stats will be identifiable so you'll know what they are before you purchase them. Items on a shop in Floor of course will be cheaper, but much worse than lets say an item on Floor 26, or Ascending Floor 1, which is the floor that has the exit that allows you to beat the game.

There will be a difference between the Roguelike Mode and The Roguelite mode, in the Roguelite mode, the shop will have a bank where you can make limited deposits of gold, and limited withdrawals of gold, that are persistent with each run, higher level shops will allow you to deposit and withdraw bigger amounts of gold, but still will have limits, so you can't just stack a fuck ton of gold in your bank and always buy the best items in the shop.

The items in the shop of course will be randomized aswell.

The shop as a mechanic in both the roguelike and roguelite mod, will be both a potential encouragement, with risk reward that will encourage you to explore a level more thoroughly, instead of just skipping the level if you happen to be very close to an exit, aswell as obviously making it so you're not just skipping gold and making the most optimal path aswell.

I am completely open to ideas aswell, I guess i'm committing to creating this, and it seems to be going well.

You might as well remove the leaderboard entirely if your game is not meant to be played in a competitive manner. The original had it because everyone in the computer lab would be competing for the high score. It was half of the point of the game.

I imagine they did that so they can just prowl around at night and not have to go home to sleep for 8 hours, take a shit, take a piss, eat then go back out. Because if you do there's a huge chance they all just die because they are retards or run out of stuff, I honestly think they should lean into the sandbox simulation of it, but they obviously see it more like ADOM/Rogue than they do Dwarf Fort, so its probably a mix of laziness and fear the player won't get the intended experience.

Nah, who cares.
If the build works it works. The builds where you need a 1 in 10 or worse route are (probably less rare than I think) rare enough.

Also, lmao, I just wanted to test this out, it's the stupidest thing, I forgot about this (Ignore the build, I just wanted to get to 25+Crystalform, it's not optimal)
Yu is snapshotting my form and, after I Stand Still and convert Crystalform into Arborus it gives me my Game Turn effect, 10% of all my current stacks- But it uses the fuckin Crystalform, so you can never get into Arborus AND Arborus will never proc and generate wisps.
It does pretty quickly stack Crystalform though, that's nice. Option outside Anqarak.

I get that you can instantly solve a level by firing off a map-filling number of summons with the press of a single button- I want to make the prestige do a GIMMICK though, you feel me?
>>
>>550253071
Summons suck dick. It's easier to win Arborus if you don't use the prestige class at all.
>>
>>550252319
Zot 5 has infinitely respawning monsters to stop people abusing game mechanics by luring monsters away from the group. You will go in guns blazing, and you will like it.

Also the shapeshifter changes are awful. The talismans at this point primarily exist to staple torment resistance onto your level 27 character in extended end game. If you start shapeshifter then have fun getting RNG'd into a form with negative rPois right before Lair. Also it takes 5 turns to turn off a form, which has been bullshit ever since they got rid of transmutations school, even though shapeshifter enemies can still do it without waiting 5 turns, because consistent internal logic in the universe isn't that important to team LGBT I guess.

I care. I did it AGAIN.
Look, it's a prestige class that is both arcane AND life and summons really, really fragile summons meant to die and be resummoned (thus why it is capped).
It is tailor made to exploit le funny skinman of psyblasting. Btw warlock is there so it can create insanely funny feedback loops on your wisps/enemies attacking, the KANG killing all your guys is my favorite thing, he kills himself so damn fast with crow hat.

If you want to do a stupid gimmick it isn't the prestige, class, good, etc... being "bad" it is your own made up rules making it worse.
I also did another one and died to the king because I killed him and somehow in his dying breath he also killed me. Was pretty silly. Should've just spammed healing. The one that died had crow, btw.

Well sure but many Roguelikes are about the adventure, especially the more popular ones, yunno which is why some have over like 10,000 hours worth of content, Rogue itself though, I mean, the OG, it's still much more of a game yes, than something that has a lot more simulated aspects to it like modern roguelikes, but I would argue whether you're a fan of roguelikes or roguelites, the majority of the fanbase in both, isn't there to get to the top of leaderboards.

Like do you think the majority of people who play Tales of Maj'Eyal for example are doing it for the high scores/legends, or because of exceptional depth of character customization and complex, tactical combat, and the sense of scale and adventure it offers? I think for a lot of people the original rogue kind of had that same vibe, just for DND fans yunno? Michael Toy and Glenn Wichman was heavily inspired by that shit.

I'm not putting down people who do want to reach the top of a leaderboard or be the best, at these type of games, but that's certainly not why I play them.

>But of course Voggite is 650 speed or something
He get speeds per cycle, he attacks AoE, and he gains 100 flat Hit value per unit he kills. So you probably fed him like 30 or 40 kills with a cult build, but even with 5000 Hit, it's not an unreasonable amount to tank if you have good defenses.

Admittedly, Voggite and Robak are usually the harder mid-bosses for the average build because they're fast enough to actually get to you and hit you with their attacks. Horror Giant is only notable for instakilling melee builds, and Jeweled Visage is a pushover unless you really get a lot of retaliation status effects built up on you.
