The key reason why everyone has a problem with Tails in Sonic Forces is because the REAL, ACTUAL Tails was player 1.5 or Player 2, Sonic's actual sidekick in the game who can do what Sonic does, since his debut. His arc in the Adventure games reinforces that active player status, that he can fight on even when Sonic is gone. Sonic Forces is building on the foundation of Lost World, of Generations, of Colors, of UNLEASHED. Where the Post-06 status quo is that all of Sonic's friends are garbage, and ONLY Sonic should be playable ever. This hurt Tails' character most of all because this created a contradiction in his own status. Tails has to be the sidekick following Sonic around, but he's not allowed to be playable. So now his fear is played up, his IQ is played up, but his strength and speed are practically erased. Basically Sonic X. Sonic Lost World was the absolute extreme of overdoing his "smart guy" role to the point that he's extremely arrogant, and Sonic Forces is the other extreme where the focus is all on his fear and sudden lack of fighting ability. The character arc Tails actually goes through in Sonic Forces is severely hindered by the game's refusal to let him do anything. Contrast that with the Avatar who gets entire levels dedicated to being Sonic's partner IN-GAME. Tails is with Classic Sonic the whole time but this never amounts to ANYTHING in-game like it does for the Avatar. As far as we can SEE, Classic Sonic is doing everything, even if Tails is the one telling him where to go in-story. We don't even get to see Tails fight in that big battle cutscene. Tails in Forces is introduced cowering, reappears cowering, and then just tags along as an NPC bystander never getting to truly make up for his lowest points. This is what makes Sonic Forces' depiction of Tails so inexcusable.

Simply put, Tails is "Player 2", or "1.5". If he is not filling THIS role, in gameplay and/or story, then he's not being "Tails". Sonic & Tails = Batman & Robin, The Flash & Kid Flash. This is the standard, the baseline, the expectation. Sonic Forces had a perfect set-up in-theory. Sonic & the Avatar, Tails & Classic Sonic. And it failed to capitalize, on the Tails side. The entire Meta Era could have EASILY just been Sonic & Tails just like the classics, but they couldn't do even be allowed to do it. All they gotta do is let Tails be playable and WRITE him like a playable character. Write him like someone who can do what Sonic can, and that's it.

You're sort of making the same mistake, by treating those games as if there was a bigger plan behind them, when in reality it was an uncoordinated mess of miscommunication. Forces is not quite the conclusion to the meta era. I think it's more accurate to say that it tried to end it. The thing about Tails being arrogant clearly wasn't planned at all, it's just a localization quirk by Pontac and Graff. They were told Tails is smart, so they made him arrogant, because that's a stereotype for smart people. Despite keeping Pontac and Graff on the localization, Forces was a clear attempt to break away from previous meta era games, at least in terms of writing and tone. I agree that the presentation ultimately fails because the gameplay is a part of that presentation and it's still based off the Unleashed and onward style of not allowing the other characters to be playable. Although, once again, you see Sonic Team's efforts to break away from that, by making the Avatar and Shadow playable. I think ultimately these problems came from Sonic Team vs SoA, combined with an overambitious premise they clearly didn't have the budget or resources for. But there are still some aspects of Forces that succeed as far as I'm concerned, and I like the general ideas. The complete disregard of anything Forces related is worse than the alternative. We could theoretically have an enhanced Forces, but we won't, because no one wants to consider the nuances of what that would mean or how it could be effectively realized. I like the Tails and Classic Sonic team up for example, but people's general mindset would ensure we could never see that again or improved upon.

I have a lot of criticisms about this entire franchise. It comes with having studied it thoroughly for years. I just don't always talk about it, because my focus when posting is often just clearing up the misunderstandings. The reason people don't like Amy is usually because of Sonic X and other stuff flanderizing her character. I have criticized those portrayals of Amy a lot in the past, and cite the Adventure games and Heroes and stuff as examples of how she's done well, with the character profile stuff describing what her character is intended to be.
I once read a fanfic (or rather fanfics) a long time ago that was a series of retellings for the games and had all these ships and there was one that had a chapter where Sally showed up and was a huge bitch to Sonic and was basically told to fuck off because he's dating Amy now. That was the only time Sally appeared in anything related to those stories.

I understand that Tails not doing anything physical in the entire meta era is a problem, but that shouldn't discount individual achievements that aren't physical just because they aren't physical. It's a part of his character that doesn't get to shine as much as it should due to him not being playable, but that doesn't mean we should be ignoring the rest of his character in the process. Clearly Forces is operating within some of the constraints of that era, it should be understood as such.

This is just my opinion, but Surge's more interesting thing is her friendship with Kit.Having a villain have a good friendship with her sidekick and not being just "ggrrrr you fool! I will torture you for failing once again!"
