Will Essence Drain proc this ability? It says it procs on hit but hit says it doesn't proc on damage over time but the ed skill says it hits. I'm confused on the wording if it will work or not.

And I've seen someone I think that supposedly got all the mana regen and cost efficiency he could and it was still not enough, though no idea if he was just as clueless as me and missed something?Why does melee, and especially the transformations, get to go through the campaign with high attack speed with little to no resource cost while you have to crawl as a witch with low damage and constantly mana starved no matter how much you invest in it? I tried the wolf and the wyvern and it's ridiculous. So much speed and damage for almost nothing, yet my witch is just pain. Everything is so slow, +3 on my wand and +1 gem level on my focus just to make damage okay and killing my mana. Why does her theme seem to be "sacrifice" where Bloodmage pays with HP, Infernalist has HP degen and self-damage unless you painstakingly manage Infernal Flame which kind of defeats the point, and yet the power she gets from that "sacrifice" is still LESS than what so many other things in the game gets for almost no investment and very early on?tl;dr How do you make witch good throughout campaign if you're tired of playing Lich Essence Drain and don't want minions?
