If you have not stopped it, then he'll still be in a coma and he probably won't ever wake up, effectively being dead. Maybe you'll be able to see him in his frozen state if a dark fountain opens in the hospital, or if one that's big enough to swallow the whole town opens.I think that's the easiest explanation.

It's basically a starting point for the Soul to get the ball rolling. Kris goes with it because he's resigned to his place and doesn't see too much wrong with it, especially since the player may have already made him do a lot of weird shit by that point. Then things just slowly escalate. I'm pretty sure the intent here is to show Kris being gradually conditioned into being desensitized to such things. He does try to resist at points, but the process is inescapable and works like water chipping away at a stone, so little by little he gives in.

The Knight is Dess but Dess was created during Chapter 1's development, she didn't exist before it and in Toby's original draft of Deltarune, the Knight absolutely was Asriel.This is based on the cut items revealed in the anniversary stream that would've been associated with Asriel being things we'd now associate with Dess, how much Toby copies from Mother 3 and the changes for Asgore's alarm clock dialogues while considering that Noelle has been a concept since well before Undertale released.
