The Underdark has a less steep difficulty curve and more optional content, but since I prefer to emerge from there to Act 2 unless I'm doing an evil run I usually leave that for second. Entering the Monastery Trail for the first time is also a point of no return, meaning the game world moves forward and some time sensitive content won't be available anymore. 95% them is shit you've probably done a long time ago and the rest is obvious if you think about it (like the fire at Waukeen's Rest or Barcus tied to the windmill) but you should check your Journal and map regardless.

Hold Monster/Person can also hit multiple targets when upcast, benefits from mystic scoundrel, and sets up afflicted targets to be quickly killed with guaranteed crits. Confusion can hit a large group of enemies while ignoring allies and again, mystic scoundrel. Confusion and paralysis also aren't able to be broken by enemies helping/pushing each other like they can with sleep. Darkness/HoH break enemy AI more often than not, and so on. Targeting only one enemy and having to use actions on subsequent turns to recast the spell make Eyebite really limited in comparison.

I never realized how soulless modern DnD and 5e are until this game. There really is no meaningful difference between most of the races and the differences that do exist are little more than relics of a different time or a hamfisted racial allegory. Elves/half-elves are human. Drow were some fetishistic race of bosswomen that became girlbosses to suit the times. Tieflings are persecuted humans. Dwarves feel like they exist only because they have to, they are so incredibly lame that cutting them from the story entirely would change nothing. Gnomes are angsty humans. Halflings are humans with dwarfism except everybody agreed the stigma of dwarfism isn’t a thing anymore. Paladins are godless knights that swear their oaths to a concept or government instead of a god. The gods are literally trans and literally retarded. After playing this through, I totally understand why Swen prefers the Durge ending over all others, abandoned any future plans with WOTC, and is returning to his own fantasy universe and ideas. Here I was thinking 40k was embarrassing, meanwhile DnD exists.

Delving a bit deeper in Karsus made me wish the game went into epic levels like 2 did, or in a fantasy world if we ever got BG4 I'd like for things to get more serious. The Netherbrain is kind of a joke, but the Crown of Karsus has some serious power behind it and I like the lore of the war behind Netheril and the phaerimm. I can just imagine exploring the ruins of Netheril, talking with Karsus' statue, fighting the phaerimm in their dessert prison. Give us the ability to use those WMD Netheril magic items or push the boundries of the weave by casting a level 10 spell.
