Inuyasha, Chihayafuru and Yona of the Dawn aren't romance focused but still have solid main character romances.Almost forgot but the romance in Eureka Seven is kino and you should watch it(ignore the sequels, they're bad).I can't think of many western examples off the top of my head but I'm sure there's a lot of good examples out there too.
