Goku's pretty consistent in Z in both Saiyan all the way to Buu. But the moment I take material outside Z, I really don't get his mental. Cell and Buu, he's pretty much trying to retire out of fighting and after dying multiple times, he's just pretty much "Yeah I think it's my time to go." for real this time. And it makes sense with the timing of when these arcs were going on. Then come Movie 13/Super/GT and they completely removed this from his character.
