What game are you playing this week, anon?

>Are mystery dungeon games allowed in this thread?
Generally yes, most mystery dungeon games(Shiren the Wanderer, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Etrian Mystery Dungeon, etc.) can be considered roguelikes
>Is Elin/Elona allowed?
Yes, they are roguelikes. Please do not post your Little Sister farms
>Is Dwarf Fortress allowed?
If it's adventure mode, yes. But adventure mode is boring. /tg/ has a general for fortress mode playthroughs but you can share here too!

it is divisive because some people like the mutation system and the gameplay but it has cringe dialogue and cringe NPCs

No, unless you're comfortable with pirating because they are communist.
>miserable discount
What's the discount? Funny how the communists refuse to give anything more than 10% on a game they produced in a capitalist environment.
>>
>>551502852
tell me a bit more about what people think of the mutation system and gameplay. cringe, eh, i can ignore that, like im gonna ignore that other weird /pol/tard. caring if a communist made a game, lmao
>>
>>551503026
I don't think there's much to say, it has an interesting mutation that you can make OP builds around. Most dangers in the game are more knowledge check than spontaneous decision makings, so it's an interesting game only if you go in blind and not that interesting once you got the minmaxing down.
>>
>>551502792
Pirate it or buy it, but as for if it's worth your time?

100% imo. I think the purple prose is awful, the quests are barely palatable, 80% of the NPC dialogue is gratingly obnoxious...

And yet, mechanically the gameplay is fun. The items and build options are great. Exploration is fun.

There's some obvious glaring faults where they leave certain parts of the game barebones- Not the least of which being the Moon Stairs barely exist, the procgen can leave the world feeling empty and the storyline being sort of aimless and rapidly drawing to a somewhat pointless close- A bit like a writer rushing out a three sentence epilogue because they're tired of the comic they created, except fully the last 2/3rds of the game are built like this (you can really tell some parts were being stapled onto the experience piecemeal with months in between updates).

...But it is fun

Hey guys, anon working on the open source variant of Rogue, I have been documenting changes and additions that I have added to the game so far. I decided to make a video if anyone is interested
https://youtu.be/ZyH1mMaSttU

Key bullet points of changes being made to Rogue that are already currently implemented if you don't want to watch a 30 minute boring video
- New Optional Roguelite Mechanics and Mode
- New Potions (Potion of Hallucination, Potion of Levitation)
- New Scrolls (Scroll of Detect Food, Scroll of Detect Gold)
- New Feature/Enemy (Chests, and Mimics)
- Reworked Leveling System based on OD&D, with the framework set up for classes (Current Class is a Thief/Rogue alongside adding class specific buffs/features, next class that will be implemented is a Fighter/Warrior, the one after that, A Wizard)
- Streamlined visuals for weapon stats in menu's to be visually more understandable and appealing
- Added a shop you can find in the dungeon of doom that you can use to spend any gold you find in the dungeon on
Open to more suggestions, I will be adding more features, enemies, and ideally later down the line even potentially much more beyond the end of the game, allowing you to explore outside of The Dungeon of Doom, and continue your journey in the world itself.

It's not even christmas anymore, no excuses.
>>
>>550979690
Can confirm, it does. The main problem is that it's called a "sawn-off pistol double barreled shotgun", and renaming it won't remove the "sawn-off pistol" bit since it's not properly part of the item name.
>>
Is Trollmire supposed to have swamp? Mine is all grass

Should I play more roguelikes if I like Tome genuine question
>>
>>551535716
Kinda, there are tons of roguelikes that are influenced off of TOME, do a google search to find others that continue the same strain of roguelike you'll like. Eventually you'll find one that takes TOME as one of their inspirations and then if you feel inclined, you can then go back to play Angband or Rogue
>>
>>551535716
ToME is probably a decent intro to the genre, it has most of the basic ideas while keeping things simple in some ways. Some hardliners don't even consider it a roguelike if you're playing as intended, with the multiple lives.

Survivor gear was kinda busted last time I tried it, too
>>
>>551563265
Unless there's some hidden modifiers I'm unaware of the survivor ninja stuff isn't that great. All of my bash protection combined is just 18 on torso, 10 on head, 18 on arms, 12 on legs, 12 on hands, 15 on legs, 8 on feet. It definitely didn't prevent me from taking a lot of damage, but since my hp pool was so high I had no lasting effects from what looked like a completely devastating hit. If I was running fragile like I normally do that'd be a death or a broken body.
>>
Man its fucking retarded how the master in maj'eyal is literally impossible to defeat if you dont have AOE. Try to teleport as to get a hit on him? Every fucking ghoul jump straight to you and block line of sight. Try to thin the horde? Fuck you here 5 more ghouls, ghoulking, vampires lords and whatever the fuck else making any progress fucking null. Basically had to abandon my lvl 26 time warden run that was doing quite well because of that bullshit, even my beefed out time hounds couldnt do jackshit before they get overhwelmed in 2 turn max.

Basically because of the recent necromancer buff master is straight up impossible if you dont have good aoe, and more than half the fucking classes ingame dont have any.
>>
>>551567739
You can abuse him by making zig zag tunnels
But yeah the necro buff made him pure cancer
>>
>>551566584
Those kinds of hits look like a lot of damage because they hit every part of the body, in reality you took ~20 damage to every limb, that's why it wasn't that bad.

So you might call this a bit of a modernization, I don't really know how elitist people would be about this kind of a thing, but as I have stated, I have streamlined the visuals for weapon stats a bit, this is also because in the future when I implement new weapons I want it to be very clear what the weapons actually are capable of, but I have also included tooltips at the bottom when hovering over a weapon so you can actually see what the stats actually mean for a weapon.

Okay, i'm doing a bit of a gameplay overhaul to how enemies work, some people may like this some people may hate this, but I will offer a toggle again, for people who do not like this change.

The Change will be as follows, currently in Vanilla rogue there are two kinds of monsters that spawn.

1. Initial spawns that are created when the level is generated, these are fixed, and finite spawns.
2. Wandering monsters that can be generated later while you remain on the same floor.

These wandering monsters if I was to simplify it, it basically picks a random spot in a room you're not in, this basically and effectively means there are infinitely respawning enemies.

Personally, I hate this. I do not like infinitely respawning enemies whatsoever as a feature in just about any game, for example a completely different game, project zomboid, has finite enemies, but it can still feel overwhelming in a city because sure the zombies are technically finite and technically can be cleared out, but hordes can wander and there are effectively hundreds of thousands of zombies you can kill, so it's not ACTUALLY infinite, even this is a much better system right because it's more immersive and simulated rather than, a fake challenge.

So what am I changing?

I have done some math to determine what the average amount of monsters that would appear, on a floor from the wandering system as you averagely go through the floor and onto the next floor, and I have implemented that into the finite spawn system, but keeping it balanced of course.

Some monsters can still wander the floor, or have unique behavior, and in a sense this may actually make you on some floors, see more monsters.

So will this remove some challenge? Yes and no, you see on earlier floors, yes you can safely wander the floor more and heal up and prepare and yada yada, yes, earlier floors likely will be easier to a degree, later floors however will likely be much harder, and clearing it out will be a challenge.

Cooking is sort of a double-edged standin for chemistry/labwork or general "science" skill, and I figure MatheMax is best considered as a labwork program, the kind you'd use to organize and collate probe data and the like.

You can see most of the Chem recipes use it, for example.

There's been some discussion (maybe a few weeks back) about how that's a little unintuitive. They sort of stalled on if Chemistry should be a skill or if some kind of proficiency system could be introduced or what.

Survival/Traps were similar candidates for reconditioning being floated at the time, too.
>>
>>551628006
I think we're honestly getting trolled at this point. The cooking requirement is right there in the screenshot, he was spoonfed the hotkey to see the recipe but insists on pretending "Oh I can't autolearn it, I can't craft it with that book ooooh I had to scour dozens of junk locations, I'm so clever for doing this instead, my way works best"

I'm sure it'll end with some aesop about how Bright Nights has bad crafting and we should be playing TLG (Where shooting is totally random, the way god intended)(Just like running is impossible for a normal human)

Tardive lard elemental devs could be in this thread....

Roguelikes are already a niche within a niche, it requires a special kind of autism to be into games like this, especially ones that aren't roguelites, and when someone IS interested in a Roguelike it's often a very specific Roguelike, so we're all dedicated hundreds to thousands even tens of thousands of hours in a game that nobody in the thread is playing, and the games also don't have much appeal outside of our threads because they don't have a lot of gooner appeal, action gaming appeal, there are very few and far between immersive sim/first person roguelikes in general.

Even Rimworld's active threads are held up by the fact that there is so much Roleplay and NSFW mods for that game.

Unless every Roguelike starts implementing rape and sex with full animations don't expect to see much activity with people interested in those other games. We're in this shit because we all like to suffer and rot, also i'd imagine a lot of us are severely autistic and or old.

it's kind of shocking to me how so many generals are so heavily focused on porn. even games that barely feature sexualized content the threads are still wall to wall porn, it's like 80%+ of the audience for video games is primarily interested in them for jerking off. I lurk the various wow threads on and off and somehow the majority of the time they are talking about ERP or guild drama. I also lurk the elder scrolls thread and that's overwhemingly focused on porn mods, to the extent that the posters get pissy whenever anyone tries to talk about anything else.

I dunno, I don't remember it being like this in the past. Feels like I'm taking crazy pills.
>>
>>551709371
The Indie game + misc games general I think mostly is video game discussion but it has the same issue here where since it overwhelmingly discusses a bunch of random shit, everyone is just talking about random shit only they are interested in.

It's funny because even though we're "Roguelike" fans, we're all usually just fans of a specific game usually right? I'm not saying always but imagine creating a general for Moria, or Tales of Maj'Eyal, how many people would show up?

>>
>>551698602
To be fair almost every single thread that has a lewd OP pic (which iirc is against the rules because its a blue board, and they use lewd pics because its a fact lewdness attract attention) get tolerated because they're shilling threads, and its why they're numbered so it make data gathering easier. You cant really compare the traffic they get to niche threads, most other threads that arent filled with shills and bots depend on anons to spot to get up the catalog, and its just natural that certain hours tend to bring less trafic to these, which is why these threads often border on page 9 to 10.
>>
>>551698602
I like the slower pace, think of those threads as towns and cities and we are the sleepy rural village that does mainly agricultural jobs.
Sure people think we are kids or we aren't relevant to culture, but our threads go at a more relaxed pace and we don't really fight that often either. It's very cozy.

I think that's why mods tolerate some video game talk on /tg/'s elder scrolls general, place where people actually discuss the TES world and lore and shit, (and occasionally the various tabletop adaptations, lol) Meanwhile /tesg/ is a dumpster fire of pervos and their weird OC waifus with bizarre coomer anatomy

/tg/ is a shadow of its former self, but once in a while it manages to beat the other boards at their own game like the old days

Newest cataclysm fork. some people say it's in between DDA and BN but that isn't quite right imo. It's much closer to DDA than BN, it's more like a version of DDA that's attempting to reposition the setting to basically be near future sci-fi Black Mesa without the weirdo interdimensional factions, and cut a lot of bloat out of the gameplay while introducing its own new mechanics not seen in either of the other forks.

Does it? I haven't played it in months. It was alright then but it was presumably also much closer to stock DDA at the time. I occasionally check out the changelog, I find that I agree with almost every change they are making. I wouldn't be surprised if it's unstable though since its apparently only worm girl working on it, or at least doing 95% of the work. Kind of a big unwieldy game for one person to maintain.

The overhaul seems to be working flawlessly, took a bit to get all the kinks out and i'll admit I also had to deal with some personal stuff, next up, i'm allowing you to sell items in the store that has a chance to appear on each level, to a merchant, by default as a Rogue, items will be sold at 75% of what their value would be if the item was sold in the store, this will change depending on your class/stats that are implemented in future builds, aswell as potentially future shops/merchants that appear OUTSIDE of The Dungeon's of Doom post game.

How does umoria compare to regular moria?
>>
Been playing more Quasimorph. It seems active implants that fire a projectile don't have damage falloff. I have one that lets me set fire to someone at range. Now if only i can find the class that improves fire spreading so I can potentially run a level without using a normal attack.

There's some other fun active implants that could make melee work. Like one that mass disarms all enemies with range 5 centered on player. And one that mass tasers at the same range.
>>
>>551777026
I wonder if I'm retarded, but I honestly could never once make melee work. Although I can chaulk most of it up to me being way too much of a loot goblin and dipping my weight modifier into the extremes way too fast. although even when I'm patient and keep my weight low, it honestly always feels so gimped and I wonder why I'm even bothering to do it.
>>
>>551779009
It's just gimmicky since one would think to melee to save ammo but it's not like you're gonna run out. And there's no true stealth even though they'd like to think there was.

This guy, I imagine he's fine with his survivor sitting in a basement shoveling lard into his face, leveling his skills a third as fast as he should, ok with frequently having to just wait if he's not in the mood to craft.

I have not implemented a merchant yet, but the sell feature has been implemented, so far all you have to do is enter a shop, press shift + g and then select the item you wish to sell, and it'll tell you how much you'll get for it, aswell as a confirmation if you actually want to sell it or not, I will not be adding a buyback mechanic, because you aren't currently selling the items to a merchant, but to the dungeon itself if that makes sense.

I will elab further when I get all the lore written down, but again I am mostly working on mechanics and bugfixes atm.

>>It says a lot about a player, what negative traits they're willing to endure.
What does it say about me when I will always pick schizo every single character no matter what?
then inevitably debug it off and forget to ever put it back on when it causes me to start scratching, interrupting me for the 5000th time.
actually is there a way to mod out the scratching?
>look through the files and find they obsoleted the schizo weapon drop
soulless. how do I put that back in? I want the weapon drop, I don't want the scratching.
>>
>>551816569
Sounds like a lot of trouble
Mmm. You'd wanna find what the schizo trait is called and then search for that. Somewhere in game.cpp there's probably a function that handles turns passing and one of them is a check for something like

if(player.hastrait(Schizo))
-100 time, console.log("You scratch your nuts!! There are bugs in your nuts!")

(This is not necessarily how the trait is called or the function that pings the character's traits, but you get the gist)

You can probably get rid of the part that wastes time and keep the flavor text from there, without trouble. Make sure it's not interrupting ongoing actions.

Here's the removal of weapon dropping, where you can see what was changed specifically
https://github.com/cataclysmbn/Cataclysm-BN/pull/6822

So re-add that back in, tweak whatever else about that change you don't like. Hey presto.
You might find the scratching in suffer.cpp too, that's probably what's actually being called instead of (player.hastrait(schizo)) but... Messy codebase, it's half one way half the other.

Will these guys ever move or are they gonna wait by the stairs for me forever
>>
>>551839259
They'll wander a bit but not necessarily out of LOS of the stairs.
Pre-read a TP, haste, invis (resist, might, brilliance, etc) and have a blink ready if the TP doesn't put you somewhere comfortable.
>>
>>551839259
They'll wander after a while, probably best to do what anon said though, just in case. If you can do another branch first, you should. Depending on your build, Slime could be an easier third rune.
I think they changed staircase behavior in 0.34 though, I haven't played it so maybe things are different now.
>>
>>551841240
After the Slime changes it is a miserable rune to get. Regret-index is NOT cool with people outsmarting the monsters by luring them away one by one, stairdancing, or any other such shenanigans. Pillar dancing is right out. You will fight these monsters in honorable combat.
>>
>>551842903
Did Slime get changed in 0.34 too? I feel like it's usually on par or easier than V5, though it obviously depends on the build. But lots of characters can cheese TRJ pretty easy.
>>
>>551843256
Yes. You can't go back up any of the stairs in Slime until you kill TRJ, so if you go downstairs and you're immediately surrounded by 20 enemies then I hope you have Shatter or Fire Storm castable (the dev approved way to play the game).
>>
I just remembered Ignition is actually the spell you want in Slime, not Fire Storm. If you have that spell then it's probably still going to be an easy 3rd rune but otherwise I would avoid it.
>>
>>551844861
Oh that's super annoying. Yeah that'd make things riskier, though I think if you've got stuff like Ignition online it's a moot point, you could probably do either just fine. Maybe even Abyss is a better option if you've got good sustain instead, I feel like the last few times I've gone for it that it was pretty easy. But I'm no DCSS expert so idk.
>>
>>551846260
Abyss is a good one for melee and ranged weapons characters who can kill single targets (wretched stars) quickly without making a ton of noise. V5 is doable by most strong characters, but you need to resist most damage types because it's all the high level monsters thrown in there, so sometimes you just don't have rElec and it's a bad idea to try.

This is the most dogshit overtuned mechanic I've seen in a long time. I now have a curse on me that will send reapers (https://crawl.develz.org/info/index.php?q=reaper) at me if I rest. I just got game overed by a status effect applied by a D7 monster in 4 hits.
>>
>>551850357
I always felt like dcss entire difficulty is based on rng. Its either one extreme or the other, and the new malevolent force mechanic doesnt help at all. Ie a 3 level down shaft is basically a game over with extra steps.
>>
>>551850357
This shit is why I go Ash so often now, except this is too early even for that.
>>
>>551851457
This character would have easily survived the shaft in 0.33. I had a kite shield, a morningstar, 2 scrolls of TP, and 3 might potions. The Drude didn't even kill me with damage. I just got a bane which doesn't scale with player level so I have to survive 1.5 levels with endgame monsters coming at me because their fucking ORIGINAL IDEA DO NOT STEAL doom mechanic had to be crammed into the early game for no reason. This is not an inherent DCSS rng problem. This is the new dev making a bad game mechanic, which if it's anything like their bad shapeshifting rework they will refuse to back down on and refuse to fix the problems.

Yeah that's what I meant, anon can't "look at what the definition of Roguelike is" because everyone is going to have a different one. The way I implemented mimic's early on was very jank, and very rushed, and the way I did it was by basically reskinning a mimic like enemy that was already in the game called a "Xeroc" and I regret doing this, because a xeroc is not a mimic, they should behave differently despite being similar in nature.

They should have separate behavior, stats, AI and flags, and that's exactly how I have implemented the new mimics.

The mimic now behaves exactly to how a mimic would behave in lets say dark souls.

It'll appear identical to a chest, uses the chest sprite, and does nothing, it is not hostile, and does not move, nor does it reveal itself to detection logic.

If an player attempts to open it, attack it, or bumps into it while searching, the mimic will reveal itself, consume one of your turns, and transform visually, the mimic will gain initiative.

Their moveset hasn't been completely ported over yet but I will be importing a lot of the dark souls moveset to the mimic, a mimic especially early game if run into, should be seen as an enemy you run the fuck away from, not fight, at least not up close.

>Berlin Berlin Berlin
Biggest bunch of cope I have ever seen in my life, there isn't a single other genre that has had this happen, where some conference in Berlin in 2008 is what we're letting define the definition of a genre that existed 20 years prior to it? What a joke. Not one other genre had this nonsense occur, not other old genres like Metroidvanias, JRPG's, to even new ones like Soulslikes, Extraction Shooters, and Battle Royales.

You're honestly gonna tell me if there was a real time, first person, immersive sim tier interaction, with extremely polished graphics and gameplay 1 to 1 exact copy of Tales of Maj'Eyal, Caves of Qud, or even Dwarf Fortress Adventure mode (I am aware such a thing would be basically impossible to develop i'm just saying hypothetically in some dream world scenario), that you'd really let some autists in Berlin in 2008, call that game a Roguelite of all things, when it is in a procedurally generated world, and has permadeath?

If you'd like, I can write an AHK script that forces a 5 or . keypress to make your character wait in place if you haven't pressed a movement key in the past .5 seconds
I think Cataclysm has a forced realtime mode too, you might like that?

It's not about the real time thing, it's about the arbitrary additions in general.

For example a JRPG, or Metroidvania, will still be be a JRPG or Metroidvania whether it's real time, or turn-based, a roguelite will still be a roguelite if it's turn-based or real time. A soulslike will still be a souls like whether it's turn-based or real time, has, is first person, third person, isometric, or otherwise.

What is far more defining for Roguelikes however over Roguelites is the fact that it's permadeath with no metaprogression, and a proc-gen world of some kind, even if it's simple proc-gen like enemy placement or tileset randomization.

The reason I would agree with not agreeing to the Berlin definition is only because of how much it limits the genre, it can still be completely distinct from roguelites which are more casual by definition because of meta-progression.

>>552060820
It's not about Berlin being the end all be all authority.
Just that they settled on a framework by committee that's fairly accurate to what most people feel the genre represents

Miriam-Webster doesn't actually DECIDE what a word means.
But they do, historically, provide the most accurate definition of words as most people understand them.

Different genres will speak to different aspects of gameplay; Not every facet of a game is defined by the genre. A first person shooter would not be a first person shooter if it was actually third person. An RTS would not be an RTS if it was turnbased.

Your exclusive focus on proc-gen and permadeath is kind of a weird subset to focus on. Especially so that you seem to think the most important difference is built-in meta-progression. You say it's not about the real time aspect, but it still feels like you're protecting that.

I don't think hardly anyone would make a turnbased metroidvania and insist that we call it a "metroidvania game" instead of a "turnbased metroidvania game"

And in this sense, roguelite serves the function of "real time roguelike" or "metaprogression roguelike"
Because it diverges far enough from the baseline to need an additional qualifier. Like vanilla, vanilla ice cream, strawberry ice cream, strawberry ice cream with chocolate chips.

Strawberry ice cream with chocolate chips is not "vanilla" just because you used vanilla ice cream as a base.

I went and installed it. I thought about it and realized that I almost always use the metabolic interchange if I can find it, and have literally never used the reactor before now.
Anyway, it's actually pretty great. The radiation scrubber uses 10kJ every ten minutes when active, and the reactor passively generates three times that when turned off. This consumes no fuel. And when I need fast energy, I can turn it on to generate 10kJ/s, and toggle the "safety override" to push it to 40kJ/s. Without the bionic slots, this might be the single best power generator CBM. Assuming you also find the scrubber that is, I expect it's basically a slow acting suicide button without it.
I've even seen the microreactor upgrade somewhere. Didn't pick it up, and it's not close, but I do have a note. Should be fun to see what that does.
>>
>>552066076
>And in this sense, roguelite serves the function of "real time roguelike" or "metaprogression roguelike"
The problem here is the fact that turn based roguelites are also extremely popular, this kind of defeats your point, whether they be more RPG like ones like Darkest Dungeon 1/2, or deckbuilder types, but there's plenty of other ones.

You see your example with RTS is interesting, because if we had the same thing happen with RTS at a conference that we had with Roguelikes, it would probably go something like this
>An RTS is a game that always is in real time, no exceptions whatsoever
What about pausing Berlincel?
>UH NO, also RTS games are typically defined by the PVP scene which doesn't allow pausing
I see but what about all the people who like it for the strategy aspect and want to play alone or in an expanded setting?
>Fuck you
And now any RTS game that has real time with pause, or grand strategy RTS will not exist, say goodbye to Stellaris, say goodbye to tons of games really or any RTS that evolved primarily around a singleplayer focus, all because for some reason there's some strange arbitrary elitism that is defining the genre too rigidly because some extremely active and hardcore Starcraft and Warcraft players would view the SP RTS Camapigns as more of a tutorial for the multiplayer, despite the fact singleplayer campaigns were somewhat extensive for many games in the genre.

Ironically enough I would argue that one of the defining features of most RTS games is that you can pause the game to think of your next move, of course this doesn't apply to the PVP scene but this is something that existed even in the 90's allowing you to manage things while time was paused, and yet it was still called an RTS.

Does this mean the game isn't an RTS? If we had some Berlin conference for RTS games it very well might have, despite the fact when you unpause the game it's playing in real time, oh and also you can often speed up time aswell, also not real time

No? That can be described as a "turnbased roguelite" and you'd be able to easily infer that some other tenet of roguelike design principle has been departed from- "Metaprogression roguelike" doesn't even preclude turnbased, it somewhat suggests that it's likely that game is turnbased, in fact.
Darkest Dungeon violates the precepts of modality and single character control, primarily, but if you asked me to tell you what it was I'd settle along the lines of "turnbased menu-battler dungeoncrawler base builder" for a start. There's no need to start hollering that it's obviously a roguelike from there, just because some aspects are similar.

I don't understand where you're going with this "What if I made a deliberately shitty definition of RTS that people would disagree with"
Do you mean to argue that an RTS(with pause) would somehow be precluded by this hypothetical definition of yours and that that somehow means the most popular roguelike definition is irrational too? I don't think that anybody is earnestly arguing against RTS games that allow pausing, mind you, I think most people see it as a reasonable component of the genre.

But you could easily call it RTS-with-pausing, the same way you can call a ROGUELITE a "metaprogression roguelike"
That is, IF enough people actually objected to pausing in a singleplayer campaign to begin with- The thing you perverts keep glossing over is the Berlin Definition first and foremost argues that it's a general rubric, not guaranteed or meant to be holistic, exhaustive or prescriptive.

Turn based roguelites do defeat the point, and your deflections only highlight the rigidity of the definition.

Turnbased roguelite, or metaprogression roguelite isn't a clean inference of one deviation.

But really you're missing the point here, yes there are subgenres within roguelites, but they're all still roguelites. The Binding of Isaac is as much of a Roguelite as Darkest Dungeon, but they are still completely different SUBGENRES of roguelite.

It's like how Phonk and Breakcore are both EDM but sound completely different.

The reason why I said what I said about RTS games here, is because in whether it be in the 80's, 90's, or even 2000's, Roguelikes were and still are relatively niche as a genre, correct? I would argue this mostly has to do with visuals, most normies simply cannot accept how shit the games look and it's why caves of qud, and dwarf fortress got much more of a massive audience once the graphics got better, but that's completely beside the point.

Imagine an alternate reality where the same thing happened with RTS, do you really think the reason why Roguelikes look the way they do, is because that's how the developers of the first major ones wanted them to look like? Especially the ones that got far more advanced way before the Berlin conference? No, of course not, they looked that way because looking that way allows developers to implement extremely advanced features and simulated complexity without having to worry about any other bullshit.

The point i'm making is, this genre being so locked the fuck down definitionally is preventing it from growing, and simply makes no sense at all, and i'm saying this as something heavily invested in the genre.

Let me put it this way, if you were to take a lot of the Roguelike developers from 1980 to 2000, before the Berlin Conference happened, ask them if they could make a game identical to their own, but in a 3D world, real time, just as complex, would they? I guarantee they'd all do it.

It looks like the reason why it died wasn't even because it was done badly, it was because of a lack of population, which is common across any niche genres or novel concepts, which is why it's dangerous to have a niche idea and then center it around multiplayer, but to say a first person shooter cannot be turn based is flawed, just as it is flawed to say a turn based game cannot have real time elements to the combat, whether it be real time defense ala undertale or parrying in some turn based games, or even real time battles in between turns such as FPS chess.

Adding attacks of opportunity was a really bad change, but it wasn't nearly as bad as shapeshifting rework (the forms are permanent and not dependent on spellcasting), tesseracts (designed to stop people from luring monsters), and doom (bad mutations that literally take 45 minutes to grind off in abyss instead of using a potion).

Oh, and you find level appropriate spells one by one instead of in themed books. This is a blatant buff for spellcasters because you find early spells that are useful for early game characters at a much higher rate, even if the number of spells you find is the same. The caster favoritism is off the charts.

flat health is what you want on equipment in the early game. You don't want the cloak with +10% fire damage, you want the cloak with +41 max life, and the lantern with +30
this matters more on nightmare+ but snakes, midge swarms, ants, anything that moves faster than you are the deadliest uniques, that's why Old Forest is done later

Why has Capcom never attempted a roguelike Monster Hunter release? It has the perfect base template of skill expression. You can beat monsters with starting equipment if you're simply good enough,
>>
>>552189268
Because it doesn't lend itself to being a turn based type game. Also because roguelikes don't have mass appeal. Next question.

I'm playing tome4 for the first time, on those escort missions what happens if you select the single talent reward over the whole talent tree? Does it unlock its entire corresponding tree? Or just that skill? If the latter then can you level that skill beyond the single point you receive?
>>
>>552196349
only that skill
You can level it up only if you already have the category unlocked
The category reward only reveals the category, you still need 1 category point to unlock it
>>
>>552196628
>You can level it up only if you already have the category unlocked
How does that work when I get a talent from a category that I can't naturally unlock? Like when I'm a Rogue and the Sun Paladin lets me pick Chant of Fortitude? Do I then have to spend a Category Point on Chants to level it further?
>>
>>552197170
If you can't naturally unlock then it will be stuck at that level. Sometimes you get multiple of the same escorts and you can use this to level it further.
Having an ability at lvl 1 is fine in many cases since it's still free stat/utility.
An ability like Track for example even at lvl 1 can still reveal a lot of tiles late game since it scales with Cunning.
>>
>>552193013
yeah, serpent turns people into shopping carts
>>
>>552196349
>>552197170
If you take the talent, then you get a point in the talent, no further investment required. If you take the tree, you'll get the tree available as an option but you'll need to invest the point to unlock it like any of your other trees.

Finally got beyond midgame, finally got to see new stuff. I didn't get to see the tesseract with my elf eyes - it's around a corner and gets annihilated by firestorm as a consequence of other monsters being around, despite >200hp and 10regen. The traps into the lung as less BS so it is more practical to rush after it.

No other real noteworthy monsters, except that Zot now has a random 'orb'-type enemy. In this case, orbs of entropy, using doom, acid, and negative energy, replace orbs of fire. That makes Zot a much less fire-oriented place, and a mere rF+ was comfy despite draconians.

Doom is a welcome change. Also, mutagenic eyes and such cause contamination rather than instamuting, so it's possible to avoid getting devolved in zot and slime (this particular DE has 0 mutations). The other big change is that Depths is now quite hard comparative to before; it's advisable to do Elf and even Vault first.

(yes I kept magic dart throughout the game because the battlesphere is just that good; yes I also needed that troll armor regen more than anything else for the armor slot)
>>
>>552227824
important things to note:
constructions are good now, use them for working up the metalworking tree
survivor gear is cracked, use it
cudgel is the good early-game melee weapon, then transition into quarterstaff and ironshod quarterstaff
skills are capped at 10 now

for real though, the forum challenges on angband.live forced me to (non-consensually) be a better player instead of a sick, bloodythirsty madman

i used to plunge into angband viciously like a horny hadorian edain, ready to fuck, ready to kill, ready to prolapse orc anii, ready to wield the biggest fucking weapon possible with maxx'd strength bonus, just turning every single fucking room into an algorithm of murder—i would enter a 3x3 with four orc warriors/champions and leave with two branded items, and if that did not happen, i would bait them to the stairs and beg them to call for help just to increase the bodypile because i wanted my fucking bounty and loot recompense

i was sick by the end, covered in blood and semen

at my worst moment, i built a 25x25 hall of slaughter for uber morgoth (he lasted less than a fucking day, but i had to kill him, and i fucking did) and murdered him with angrist, just gutting that fucking vala until the game threw up its arms and called me an autistic faggot—"victory" under any other genre—and let me don that crown of stars

I enjoy bending the game to my will and becoming superlatively powerful, chaining Ziggurats, grabbing all the runes, maxing out my XP bar and equipping and abusing ludicrous artifacts and esoteric combos

I didn't "finish" Qud when I was able to make like Shinji couldn't and just get in the mecha and coast to the finish line.

I FINISHED it when I had permanent uptime on my mental buffs, my perfect cybernetic loadout, triple modded armor and weapons and arbitrarily huge stats (plus every schematic in the game)

Japs very rarely innovates, especially with old and established ip's. Also doesn't help the high exec of these companies tend to be very possessive of their assets, so very rarely devs will be allowed to step outside the route already proven to be profitable, and a lot don't even think of making a game that isn't tailored for japanese markets, with exportations being an afterthought.

ie almost every single jrpg, monster hunter game (until 4 the gameplay was almost the exact same, gameplay wise, from one game to another), etc. Like to give an exemple, dark soul was considered dead in the water by execs from the get go, yet look at it nowaday and it inspired an entire genre of games.

worm that walk are bullshit, for some reason as a writhing one class they suck ass on average but when you encouter them they kick the shit out of you. they're one of the reason I never bother with old forest until I get 15 to 17 or more, its always better to grind every low level dungeons then go to maze (unless its the pit variant, which final boss is way harder than the minotaur) or daikara, then old forest. even if the first two or three levels can be easy due to the weak enemies, its easy to get btfo by a random unique.

>>
>>552236435
I dunno, it's still kind of a luck-oriented game either way. As a melee-dude, you're dependent on randomly getting the weapon and armor you need to survive. Playing carefully can bend the curve but not in the long run. For example, I had a +11 artifact ice dragon armor with lots of benefits, and I fully intended to wear it, and practiced armor and pumped strength to do so, but nothing other than the elemental staff came up with rF that didn't have awful downsides, so it was never practical. If it had been something I was actually depending on, I would have lost.

It's the same for casters, except in that instead of getting cool unique artifacts (or rare unrandarts with cool specific mechanics) you're looking for the same set of spells. My DECj found a battlesphere parchment lying on the floor, and would have for-sure died if I had been relying on mystic blast and fulminant prism when a shaft took me to the land of bears and huge gnoll packs. Vehumet is eventually guaranteed to provide good spells, but you're a quarter of the way through the game before that happens.

So, as a caster you have a choice of Vehumet or Sif Muna as gods; anything else means that sooner or later you're going to be screwed on spells. Just like weapons, spells sort of have an expiration date, and you're not getting through the late game with low-level spells. There's no other way to affect the outcome. You can't intentionally find or seek out spells - they're just going to be on the ground randomly or not there.

>>552259030
Not really seeing the problem to be honest. They do acid damage (for which you'll have rCorr anyway) and doom. There's like 10 of them in the entire game, all in Zot. They're still definitely the strongest enemy you'll face, but that was also true of OoF, which malmuted you the instant they were on screen and made rF+++ mandatory. Just do lots of non-N damage before they doom you.

>Stone warden Eldritch Slam also hurt your allies and escorts
>Mfw

This is fucking dumb, and it just crossed my mind after a few hours of game that the final fight, if I manage to reach it, is going to be an absolute pain if I also have to fight the sun paladin girl in addition to the two mages, because for some fucking reason in tome4 if you do any damage to certain allies they turn hostile. But I guess there is a silver lining in the fact that its kind of amusing seeing an escort get obliterated by friendly fire.
>>
>>552339920
Stone Warden is probably the most scuffed class in the game. It has some potentials but there are so many downsides to its abilities.
I have never seen the sun paladin girl turn hostile however (unless you count the scripted event) so it should be the least of your concern. You _can_ get fucked by the final boss as a SW even if you get all the way there, considering all the bad things it has.
>>
>>552334219
I guess they're so out of it they barely register their physical feelings, but can still somehow feel their center of mass influence and seek out the thin margin where they feel like almost falling because its the only thing their mind is registering and they crave sensation.
>>
>>552340202
Kind of fearing the magical damage, because despite being tanky and having some reasonable magic resistance, casters can easily overwhelm my defenses. So I feel like ill get absolutely btfo once I start clearing the prides, especially the southern one with the necromancers which I fucking hate due to how op they are.
>>
>>552340543
Casters really aren't that bad, it's rogues that you should be afraid of. They can just apply a billion bleed/poison damage on you while disarming/garotting which prevent you from doing anything at all.
You can play a "safe" Stone Warden by going staff and learn the Stone category. It feels weird but it works, you can just Earthquake people to death while your Elemental Split summons shit on the enemies. This is also a lot safer for your summons since while they technically take damage from Earthquake, you get more freedom in positioning the spell unlike say Eldritch Slam.

>Not really seeing the problem
The problem is that grinding off doom is tedious as fuck, and you don't want banes because they are 1000x worse than getting mutated by an OoF on account of mutation pots not working. There is no defense against doom aside from leaving and coming back later, and that makes the game less fun than if they never added that shit to the game.

Brogue has several irritating flaws that prevent me from playing it.
>You have to turn all the graphics ad effects off to see lighting and your stealth radius.
>Minion AI is far too random and uncontrollable to be as large a part of the game as it is.
>Searching for hidden doors and traps is just unpleasant and disruptive and as the game goes on becomes either tedious or pointless, never fun or interesting.
>Not having any real choice over what tools you'll have in a run without seed scumming in order to make the game more varied paradoxically makes it more monotonous instead as you can never reliably combine rare resources and are thus essentially forced to take whatever is the most obvious direct benefit immediately
>Vaults while neat in concept become boring and repetitive since you essentially have to always find and open all of them in every run if you want to survive
There's just not quite enough combinatorial mastery involved and a little too much slot machine god-seed easy mode vs shit-seed auto-fail.
It's also a little too long and slow paced, especially at the start with the first ten levels being basically impossible to lose unless you get gigafucked by RNG or fault hardcore.
>>
How do you make cata end game fun?
I always quit shortly after hitting autum/winter which is around where I hit that point where there's no reason to visit most locations and even with mods in cbn adding new locations with new high end loot it's still just go to high end loot location and kill a bunch of stuff just for 1 rng roll for something that makes killing the next bunch of stuff easier to get to the next rbg loot roll faster.

Ask yourself what could make your character more comfy.
If you're maximum comfy, that's it, you won.
Or, alternatively, go throw a nuclear bomb into a lab finale portal.
I think it's supposed to be a particular type of bomb? The one that's really expensive to print?
You'll figure it out
>>
>>552370761
Mininuke.
You can also throw your character in, which wins the game but kills your character.
Which is as good a way as any to end a run you are getting bored with.

>If you're maximum comfy, that's it, you won.
But it's too easy to obtain maximum comfy.
maximum confy is a battery powered vtol that can vt with ~1000lbs of loot, which lets you ignore 99% of the game unless you intentionally decide to interact with it and can be achieved in the first in-game week if you get lucky.
Which is why I avoid it until end game.

"gooning" is now mainstream because sad lonely internet people cope with their issues with chronic masturbation and porn addiction, women are bandwagoners and have always been the worst possible perverts on the internet since the vast majority of men online that aren't rakesh just wants to fuck and snuggle and not get raped by spiders until they become a breeding sow for insects

Is the right map tile supposed to be the one with the red '*'? That's on the surface, and placing a console there doesn't work. Doesn't display anything coherent. Neither does on the tile below, or two tiles below.
The console for the previous quest did spawn, and it was one tile down and one to the south of the entrance, but that doesn't work here either.

You don't, arguably the worst class in the game.
>>
>>552453334
wut did they get changed?
I remember cursed was pretty strong, as long as you could manage the equipment minigame
>>
>>552454252
That is kinda irrelevant since you are more or less just a worse version of Bulwark, the second worst class in the game.
You're a melee fighter with a resource that constantly drains itself (net negative vs trash mobs), terrible defense (negative healmod, % chance to ignore damage from the shield sustain is very unreliable compared to damage mitigation), unreliable damage (bulwark as a whole does more damage due to the counterstrike mechanic)

It is borderline playable in every aspect but there is very little to no point. Even the item mechanic is just another RNG layer that gets in the class' way.

(Doomed is a significantly better afflicted class, it doesn't have the resource management issue)
>>
>>552454835
I remember having fun on it and just messing around, idk what you're talking about. This was ages ago so maybe it got nerfed, but it didn't feel like the weakest class or anywhere close to it (I think it was alchemist).
>>
As long as you can find one no death, highest difficulty playthrough on YouTube, it's viable and nothing else matters.
>>
>>552456217
All weapon classes got nerfed due to weapon scaling changes, but most of them are still playable.

Alchemist is very far from the weakest class, it has this weird infamy from all the forumers regurgitating the same meme but outside of the rough early game it has
>range 10+ abilities
>real mobility (gem portal)
>hard CC (disarm, root)
>real damage mitigation (crit immunity)
The game is basically steamrolling past lvl 25, something I can't say about most melees since you still have to constantly worry about randboss rogues dealing 3 times your max HP in a single flurry.

That's not Reddit spacing.

This is Reddit spacing.

Reddit required a double newline character to emit a single newline.

The result is Reddit users using double newlines on 4chan out of habit creating single sentence paragraphs.

If there are multiple sentences per paragraph it's not Reddit spacing, it's just correct English formatting. Even if it is Reddit spacing all you achieve by pointing it out is shitting up the thread even worse than the Reddit user with a meaningless post.

Trunk is the latest build of DCSS. "Stable" releases are called branches and their own version number- .32, .33, .34, etc

You get to play with new experimental stuff in Trunk but there's imbalance or bugs sometimes and some of the stuff you get used to might not make it past the next patch, let alone into the stable version.

Good question. The flechette has decent armor piercing anyways and the 4x auto is probably better in a lot of cases.
But if you're trying to take down harder targets you're going to want the higher damage/penetration I think. You're already at a 2:1 disadvantage per boolet and not only will you chew through ammo but higher armor targets will have a longer TTK
>>
>>552590728
if he was worried about that he'd bring a bigger gun and not a pistol
the IDW has 4x more ammo than the stupid rifle caliber pistol and enough armor penetration for the very toughest enemies, and less recoil which means faster firing

The IDW, definitely. The higher damage of 8x40 caseless can't compete with the sheer volume of bullets you can dump at enemies with autofire. And since enemies need to get close to you to attack, the 18 extra range also gives you more time to dump bullets at enemies.

Looking at the numbers, nomad light plate has 17 encumbrance on the torso and 10 on the limbs, while nomad chain has 16 torso 14 limbs. Nomad medium plate is 22 torso 15 limbs, and heavy plate is 27 torso 20 limbs.
I can't see the armour values since I'm just reading the json, and they're calculated from the material thickness. But yeah, chain somehow has worse encumbrance on the limbs than light plate, so maybe light plate is the winner here.

Keep a lookout for the windpowered generator CBM as well- Windspeed picks up rapidly as you go up, so depending on how inclement the weather is you can indefinitely sustain flight/movement at 3-7 (and pretty much always at the ceiling).

Even without abusing that you can feather it to hop up to windows and roofs- Even deconstruct vents like at augmentation clinics (you don't fall till construction is over ecksdee)

Adom was amazing roguelike about two decades ago. The guy went all in on eliminating any and all emergent gameplay since then. You can't make teleport trap 'highways' anymore as trap order isn't a thing anymore, you can't tame the big room any more, and speaking about big room the game of life minigame for herb farming got essentially sidestepped as now every 80IQ retard player can just grind infinite herb seeds.

>>
>>552792595
endgame PC has in the thereabouts of 2-4k hp depending on class, final bosses have around 14-16k (on normal), your usual RPG math of numbers being bigger against enemies and getting instakilled by your Inner Demons clone, use every tool in your box when a Solipsist is on screen
There's a meme build where you take Healing Nexus from the Harmony tree or its equivalent in Vile Life that redirects nearby healing to you or converts it into damage
>>
>>552797495
Are you sure about that? Because I hardly see how that small regen is good, like I can see that the shield lengtening is good, but the fact it also give it to the enemy kind of defeat the purposes. I think youre mixing it up with the one that send orbs to all enemies in radis, which is pretty good.
>>
>>552801406
It is the one
>giving enemies regen too
This hardly matters in the main use case, which is to make you survive. The fact that it heals and shield you at the same time for absurd amount if quite frankly crazy. If you get surrounded, pinned or stunned you can just cast it to buy a lot of time.
It also doesn't matter that it heals enemies late game, since your damage output outpaces your shield scaling.

There are other "hidden" mechanics that make it viable in Madness too

1. Like most SP abilities, it can spell crit. So late game it can give x4 the listed amounts with the proper build.
2. Weapon of Light (the damage sustain) has a hidden effect (don't ask me, read the code) that says: when you attack an enemy, you set any shield status effect duration to 2 if it is lower. This means that you can get a sizable shield out of sight, engage enemies in fights, then keep smacking to keep the shield lasting a very long time.
3. The madness build utilizes a lot of cooldown reduction to keep Bathe in Light up all the time while attacking from range 10 with a scaled up Wave of Power.

Even if you use none of these it's still massively cheesy to use even on Insane, since it allows you to fight while you are stair camped by enemies (keep using Bathe in Light until it spell crits on another floor, get a big shield then use the stair and refresh it with attacks). This separates a lot of doomed runs from winning ones.
