I haven't played this game since I was a drooling baby but I DO remember that individual units can have rank/experience level ups of some fucking sort for better combat performance. Because I had the same problem with recruiting shamblers early as Earth and they die to basic looking dudes in a dungeon. I think sticking heroes in my guilds helped both the hero and unit recruits get level ups?
Also the sseth video taught me parry was a thing, kid me never fucking knew that

Been playing Farthest Frontier. Addictive little gem. All it needs is a better UI for the decoration and desirability stuff. You have no idea how to tell how many of what you've placed and where it is unless you click on a specific decor piece to highlight the rest, like parks. You basically have to spitball how effective everything is based on a green arrow pointing up and the cost to build and upgrade.

I've been stuck in T3 because my Homesteads won't upgrade and then I finally realized I needed Parks. As soon as I put one down a Homestead started upgrading...

Half Life mod released a demo, finally.
The seven hour war is predictably not actually seven hours, but the content is pretty good for a demo. It really is a hectic rush to try and fix shit before the combine shows up, in a fun way.

Some Empire at War mods are 10+. Shit gets nutty when you're adding new assets.
Even without 3D models you can balloon the size with how much you stuff into it. IE, the Multiverse mod for FTL is 700MB, while the game itself is only 300MB.

I like blowing up tanks across the map with a skill shot, shit is so satisfying. That mod adds like 5000 ways to disable a tank and heavy tanks are almost impossible to fucking kill, you need to match fire power or it will sit there as a turret until it runs out of ammo.

Here's one last post to wrap up the divegrass team's campaign. It was great to see the team play again after a long absence, thank you all for your support of the team and your input on so many different aspects of it. The team finished 9th overall and earned a starter spot on the /vg/ team with Stalin being the thread's rep based on comments from here. /vg/ plays in the 4chan winter cup which starts on the 23rd of this month so you'll see him in action then. Tournament awards were announced today and /civ4xg/ received the But What If Though? award and were runners up for Most Exciting Team and Match of the Tournament (the round of 16 match vs /tf2g/ which you can watch here if you haven't https://implying.fun/video/vgl25/2025-12-20/?t=2:23:30.0)

The team will be in cryostasis (with Horatio) until probably around mid March for friendlies, then the next /vg/ League will be from late May through late June. I'll post again before each to see who you guys want to face for friendlies and if you want any changes for the team roster, player models, songs, chants, etc. One model I think I'm going to see about improving (assuming he's still on the team next league) is Sid Meier since I found his animated 3D model in the depths of the Civ 4 files. Real battleships have more considerations to make, namely their structure has to be balanced front/back otherwise the ship sinks. Guns are heavy so they have to go to both ends of the ship to balance each other out and building tall is both heavy and difficult so there's a limit on superfiring (pick related). If you don't put guns at the back then you are just missing free firepower, so you may as well put some in the back too which at least lets you shoot if you have to run away and most of the time all the guns can shoot to the sides. OP's ship can't shoot at the broadside because of the side guns which were abandoned for the same reason.
Space has one less axis to worry about because a spaceship only has to be really balanced along the axis of thrust instead of front to back and side to side which means there's no real reason why you can't put all of your guns to the front (or the back which ever you like). A star wars flying wedge is much better design for a warship that still operates under the "navy but in space" rules lot of fantasy does since it can concentrate all of it's guns forwards.

While that is technically a good change for gameplay reasons the whole idea is pretty silly. Active sensors light up like beacons because they suffer form r^4 loss in strength while listening to them is only r^2 and the advantage should be bigger than that for detection vs targeting purposes. In reality even small active sensors should have basically "infinite" range to be detected by passive sensors for tactical location purposes. It's like 3 games stapled together. The earth layer, which is balancing the spinning plates 20 different numbers and goals to keep track of, the space layer, which is closest to a traditional 4x, and the combat layer, which is a spreadsheet-fueled blob of unnecessarily-realistic autism.
It's both unforgiving (if you fall behind, it's very hard to catch up, and you'll need to savescum to balance out AI cheats) but also extremely forgiving (as long as the aliens don't totally conquer the planet, you can come back and win even after the other factions have won, there's even an achievement for that).
Performance is kinda bad and load times are atrocious. 5+ minutes.
It's basically 'Noob Trap: The Game' with a large number of techs, mostly for ships, that serve no purpose than to waste your rapidly-dwindling time. Each tier has a best-in-slot, a couple of runners-up, and everything else just kneecaps you, and you won't know until you make a spreadsheet to compare them or look up one someone else already made. There's like 40 types of engines, but only 5 are actually worth using.
A single playthrough can take almost 100 hours.

A core concept about it is is based off of "Great Units" You are limited for the amount of each one you can have by the era (1,3,5) by default.

You can upgrade any military unit that has killed another unit to a Great Unit the turn after it kills a unit if you do not have any other limit. This makes it so after every kill after being promoted, it gains a random upgrade.
Upgrades include:

Retiring them turns them into a monument which has it's own upgrades, but it's own downsides once raided.

It's made to have a risk vs reward element to promoting Great Units and with feeding them more troops. Not all upgrades are beneficial and they become easy targets. Only the owner can see their benefits/cost.

Final map's final boss even has them in his army.
Thing is, GS and later Winds of War didn't come with a lot of skirmish maps, and new units DON'T spawn naturally, they have to be placed manually on the map when you create it. Same for their dwellings. So unless you play campaign or one of the, like, three maps that have new units pre-placed, you are not gonna see them.

I like the game, but there are few missions that are bullshit because you have to either babysit an inquisitorial ship on a mission of exterminatus, while a whole chaos warband is trying to destroy his ship and at that point you have like, couple of cruisers at your disposal.

The Mission that rustles my jimmies, is the fucking eldar co-operation mission, where you and the knife eared fuckup of the void are fighting against the orks.
Originally, this mission wasn't impossible, but since the ships in campaign are exactly the same as the ships in multiplayer, that means that any and all tweaks to the ships, for the sake of multiplayer fairness, will end up happening in campaign too.
So, in original game, elves were just tanky enough to not melt when coming in contact with orks, but since they were cancer on steroids to fight against in MP, the devs nerfed them hard to give MP babbies (like me) a chance against the knife eared menace.
So now, if you choose to side with the space elves in campaign, you practically soft lock yourself from finishing the game, because 1, the elves are weak as shit and 2, their AI isn't half as dickish as a real competent player, so they can't pull of those same stunts that human players were pulling off in MP and, in general just wander in too close to the enemies and get rammed.
Also, did I mention that it's an automatic game over if your knife eared ally's ship gets destroyed in that mission? And that he starts off halfway across the map, almost right next to the enemies, while you have to make your way up to the elf raping grounds?

No they scrapped futher updating a strategy layer of the game. You can still play conquest but they stopped working on it because the focus of the game is tactics. Testers were winning battles with superior numbers which isn't what the game is balanced arround. I think it was the right call in the end because the game focussed on tactics and team work. After stopping development of conquest they started on a single player campaign instead. You will get choices were to go, but it will be a series of maps you need to win. A bit like homeworld.

The population will abandon the place and your budget will shrink until you're in the red. This is extremely bad if it happens to dense residential because then you lose a SHIT ton of residents and abandoned low value shit has a knock on effect to buildings around it. So you can see how that can quickly become a huge problem if left unchecked. Everything can multiply though, the trash levels and corpses can drop the value on top of it. You'll suddenly be in a pit that can take a while to recover from and be expensive.

I'm not satisfied with US+Canada, so now I'm cracking into France. Servants had 60-70% support pretty much the whole game, but a couple years of propaganda (and some from the Academy, for some reason) have torn them down to just 25%, giving me just enough of an opening.

I have chosen to abandon Tahuks and try the new Necrophages and Aspects.
The unique districts for the bugs changing from 1-of to instant-build with scaling corpse cost feels really good. The whole Matriarch's Eye to level up districts thing kinda gives off Ardent Mages city planning vibes, which wouldn't really be v-eye-able n that game without the Eyes producing a fuckton of influence. Also, it makes it really awkward to generate good science/dust with labs and trading posts due to adjacency shit. Not sure how I feel about the Tails being the only military structure, it seems like that'd make defending the hive require substantial standing armies on patrol duty later on, and requires you to put Eyes on the frontier of your territory for security purposes (scary investment of resources). Feedholes amplifying strip-mining tiles feels awesome. I appreciate that their economy now runs on corpses almost entirely.
Haven't gotten particularly deep with Aspects because I struggle to contain homicidal urges when other empires sieze land I wanted. The +1 food on coral feels extremely nice, as do the new district bonuses. The change from coral making bribes free instead of auto-pacifying helps solve their abysmal early game defensive play, but also really hurts their early economy (they lost the basic dust district, so more unit upkeep = slower coral growth). Their mid/late game expansion will likely be fueled by deposits for trading post adjacebcy bonuses. Buyout with influence feels as strong as you'd expect, but it also feels like retreading ground. My biggest gripe with them has changed from "They fall over to the slightest early aggression" to "They kind of just feel like they cobbled together ES2 factions". Also, I think they made their cavalry unit T2 and their flying juggernaut T3 now.

Narrative wise? Yeah, it's bad. New World Computing was going down in flames, they were putting those expansions together on a budget of chewed gum and empty pizza box.
They are great as just raw unfiltered gameplay faggotry. In Gathering Storm your heroes start out weak but end up overleveled monsters that wouldn't be out of place in a Holy Grail War in Fate. Last map is all of them coming together to defeat the main villain as the world becomes unstable.
Winds of War is just a set of challenge maps that tell a story about how several counties invaded the same kingdom at the same time. Maps look neat and are just a solid HoMM4 skirmish experience. It all ends on one giant map that represents the capital of invaded kingdom, and ALL factions are present at the same time. You actually choose which one you'll be playing as (and yes heroes are carried over from previous scenarios, so you'll be fighting heroes that you raised yourself). The end goal is to break into the capital and it's a set of decently brutal fights which I mostly remember because the final defender hero uses the portrait of my beloved Adelaide (don't judge me yes I had a crush on her since HoMM3).
Winds of War introduces some new units and megadragons are really cool. But, uh, you already know how new units are handled integration-wise.

The improvements to city building expect are cool, and the free camera I guess is the biggest change.

Trading is fine as one would've guess, the route AI is quite good, however I just quite figure how to set up the "Star" trade route they mention, which is supposed just a central warehouse dump and distribute, because them the algorithm just doesn't seem work as properly

And it's not artillery, it's a supply wagon that is supplying my archers with arrows. If it didn't, they'd have to craft their own arrows on the fly, and it'd take so much time that their rate of fire would suffer once their quivers are empty.
Also it constantly heals the pikemen.
