Hands and feet are never armored, it's been memed to death.
Biotic them up. Caravaning around looking for biotics is a major thing midgame to keep everyone online, I'm at it right now. There's the wooden replacements too for low tech.

That's what's missing from regular raids in the first place. Raiders are not robbers, they're here to murder first and MAYBE ransack the place if they can't find anyone to kill. Tynan kind of fucked himself for future DLCs by making Odyssey. Every DLC has to be designed with Gravships in mind which is going to limit their options quite a bit.
Gravships change the way the game plays so drastically and a lot of people are play with Gravships almost exclusively now.

The research projects are all cheap as hell too. The progression itself is a little slower though since you have to hunt down new materials to expand your ship through quests.

Meanwhile, SoS2 puts the ship stuff at the end of the tree and makes everything expensive af to build because you need components, advanced components, and/or plasteel to build practically everything in that mod. Even a single ship wall takes components and plasteet. Gravship kinda fucks with progression if it's just slapped in so early like that.

Its very stupid but thats their DLC philosophy, they want it all easily accessible for the lowest common denominator player. Even though there's also a scenario that lets you just start with a gravship.

I don't want all the walls costing plasteel and components though, that's retarded. It also shouldn't be pushed to the end of the research tree because at that point youll have a fully built up colony so the Gravship loses most of its appeal.
Oskar's Gravship mod honestly does a pretty good job of it. Takes longer to get the first gravship quest, you have to fight for it and it also starts off weaker. The progression is harder too.

Don't wanna bother with the most ignored system in the game? Build a shuttle and never caravan again

my last playthrough was a VFE deserter run and they were basically a pirate crew who moved around the map with a gravship abducting impids and gnolls before nestling in a canyon in the mountains.

I know that, it was working before in the same game, but at some point it seems to have broken. Tried rebuilding the gestator but even with a valid bill and material (ie revive light mechanoid) had the dead one and steel stocked right next to it and selected the mechanitor but nothing came up on right click. I haven't messed with my modlist or anything and nothing else has the issue so not sure what caused it to happen, maybe some update broke something.

Does your mechanitor have access to the zone and the work type enabled?
Did you check that the bill is allowed to use the resources needed? It's possible for mods to change the default setting.

What are some mods to make this game about scavenging and survival?

I played max diff vanilla and i don't like:
-invasions constantly bring in resources
-infinite ammo for all guns
-constant quests, sites spawning and caravans arriving

I want something which doesn't spam me with high end bionics and items all the fucking time, something which makes you just organically move from site to site and focus on survival, ambient dangers instead of invasions, and the mood being much more important.

To be honest this has always been a massive problem with the game and is frankly somewhat irreperable.
However, I think CE adds ammo to guns, and Ignorance is Bliss makes it so raids are never from factions at a higher tech tier than yourself (which doesn't mean they don't bring resources, but at least your tribal who don't know how electricity works aren't running around with ultratech weapons).
Really the game wants you to build a base and defense it though, you're gonna have a hard time getting what you want.

Dubs bad hygiene and turning on thirst is an obvious one, colonists get slight hydration from meals but need access to drinkable water to avoid dehydration and will need it treated to avoid disease/toxic fallout if its present (in addition to adding a hygiene need which if they dont keep up with makes it so that they are more likely to get sick/contract diarrhea which nukes their efficiency)

For ammo you can use either CE which is a bit of a compatibility mess and changes a lot, or go a simpler route which I prefer and use Yayos combat 3, you have to actively manufacture ammo and reload ranged weapons and the ammo types are split by tech level ie industrial ammo for assault rifles etc and spacer ammo for charge rifles, with special ammo types for flamers, grenades etc. makes it more realistic and adds another layer of production to take into account without bloating the game with 200 real world ammo types. If you don’t want to use Yayos combat I believe there’s a mod called simple ammunition which is a simpler system though I prefer the accuracy/armor changes Yayos does as well, it’s compatible with virtually everything so I like it for that

I also use seeds please (lite version). This requires you to actually have seeds for the relevant crop in order to be able to plant them rather than just being able to sow a full field of cotton/potato plants etc off rip. With wild cultivation you can either harvest seeds found in the wild or otherwise buy them off traders and once you start growing some you can sacrifice some of your crop yield to extract more seeds

That's also not counting the fact that if you allow cannibalism in your colony, you will literally never run out of food and leather. Was, at some point. And I'm saying it as someone who played it for like 1000 hours over the years, from all the way before even carts and rails were a thing.
With time DF became too focused on descriptions and other gravy instead of making the process of actually playing and therefore witnessing the story more interesting. Only now we got better sieges, and economy, politics, governance, nobility are still the way they were 15 years ago.
"Losing is fun" is not even a thing, because very little actually happens that you can't fix near immediately. Hell, you have to severely handicap yourself (embarking in a cursed biome, not bringing supplies, arbitrary rules on who gets to live in your fort and what is allowed to be built etc) to have any sort of "heehee wow everyone died" buffoonery.
One hard truth is that 99% of "fun" that happened in DF and that was shilled ad nauseam by people who barely played the game (if at all) happened because of UNINTENDED or BUGGED interactions. Dwarfs suiciding for a sock, cats breeding out of control, cats getting drunk and dying instantly, minecart gauss guns, etc, it all happened because something went wrong with how the game was programmed. When working as intended, DF is mind-numbingly boring. And even building huge forts only entertains you for a little while.
Now, to circle back to Rimworld - raids make little sense from narrative standpoint, yes. However, to make them sensible would require a lot of work and actually fleshing out other part of world generation and interaction.
Sure, you can make it so that tribals first come to see your colony right after you crashlanded and then decide to fuck off or threaten you to leave because your falling star fell on their territory, and after that they will either raid you endlessly because it's basically a holy war for them, or just get fucked once and leave you alone. But that's a whole lot of events and checks that have to be implemented.

My threat scale is currently 25%. What I feel is appropriate has more to do with my number of combatants and their equipment than anything.
Using CE is also a factor. Pawns with guns are a hundred times more dangerous than most pawns in melee or carrying low tech weapons like bows or javelins so that factors into my choice. In the right conditions, a single person with a gun can kill dozens and that goes both ways.
Also I always play on Randy, and when your wealth gets to the kind of ludicrous levels that my average map is, he can have some insane raid difficulty swings due to how his raid generation works. Even on 100% threat scale.
For example, if you're going to get an infestation of 50 bug hives, Randy's random scaling can affect that total by as much as +50% or -50%.
50 hives becomes 75, or it can get reduced to 25.
200 tribals becomes 350, or can get trimmed down to 100.
Randy can pick a increase or decrease anywhere within that range and the swings only get more extreme the higher your wealth gets.

Depends. I did get one who rolled Tough, Nimble, Brawler with melee passions so I converted him and recruited him. Modified his genes a bit to fix the weak melee gene and slow healing gene. Ended up being my best colonist.

Look, I really love Moyo.
And, they make for a great source for reasonably thematic cannibalism, to an extent (i.e, to be consumed by other humanoids, or pseudo-humanoids). But, functionally, their current implementation, with the pseudo-endless "beta", low variety of facial animation textures, low variety of equipment for visual flair that fits their body for some characteristic distinction, and it's clear that despite being one of my favorite races, they're just too outdated and ill-maintained.
Additionally, they're difficult to fit into my autismo lore fanfic primer, so they're "too" alien. It's a shame, really.

High tech research is six job bills. With an analyzer it becomes seven. Alternatively you could just buy the samples or papers from traders and not craft them at all.
If that's too involved then I have no more answers. The job bills changed once in the 10 years since the school was built, one bill to add component samples and one to add research data for the high tech bench when that was installed following an expansion of the library.
I'll admit there's some bloat with Research Data that I just ignore, like the schematic stuff or the archotech analyzer. I don't really see the point of either. I nerf research speed as slow as it will go with ideology and this scenario itself was started with a global 50% reduction in research speed.
End result is colonists have to put extra steps into research and you can't just research electricity in a single afternoon.
There is an exception though, passive reading of schematics bought from traders lets us passively research many things, often quite a bit faster than doing it ourselves which tracks. Of course it would be easier if you had someone else's blueprints.

Tech Advancing has an option to lock you out of electricity until you recruit a non-tribal pawn.

Yes, but the fact is that the optimizations applied in 1.6 are mostly applicable to Vanilla or lightly modded runs. Where Rocketman excelled the most was the generation of the Gagarin cache, which, with hundreds of mods, is what brings out the most TPS in a large save. Caching all those defs and having them optimized through Rocketman is something that doesn't happen in 1.6 sadly.
