Hey /agdg/, i wanna know your thoughts on AI being used for video games and other media.
How many of you use AI in your games and how many of you accept AI being used for games!
I really wanna know what all of you artists and creatives have to say on the subject!

Reduced jump and dash speeds to make them less jarring and easier to learn.
Added diagonal jumps
Added a new stance that lets you perform any DP action with 1 button after a .6s charge.
Completely rewrote my literal first week of coding special input script and now certain common missed inputs count as valid.
Added up to 50% to all input buffer times.
Added a dedicated dash button, which I'm not sure how to balance still.

Doesn't really translate too well on video, but at least you can see the new stance.

It starts with keeping your assets very organized and keeping up to date descriptions and metadata paired with each asset. Engines are going to have to be reworked to a data/asset first approach. Here is my pile of assets, design document, compile it. Basically.

The type of prototypes I knock out in a week, I'll be able to do in a day once the framework is finished. I have all my assets on my local dev webserver, where they are requested into the engine at load time. The engine is just playback tool that gets fed the up to date game files from the webserver.

Since the assets and scripts are all sitting on a server with 48GB of VRAM, they can be modified almost instantly on the fly and fed right back into my engine without having restart the game.

I'm limiting everything to 400x300 resolution and likely 256x256 textures for testing and and to save on compute costs. The finished games it will output will be similar to IBM VGA or Amiga games in quality and scope. You will still have to read and manipulate some basic code to get exactly what you want.

>why not live in a cheaper city?
Because if you have the means to live in the city, its unparalleled.
When you "make it" as a programmer or dev you can afford to live in the big boy cities. Why the fuck would you go live in some dump somewhere else?

Everyone knows about scope creep, well lifestyle creep is very real too.
They will all get jobs on other dev teams and keep their standard of living just fine.

The most expensive cities also have by far the highest wages.
If you have talent, you know you pretty much have to move to those cities to get those jobs.

Remote work is new, and is already being axed by actual FAANG companies.
You dont get hired out of fucking ohio to work on a real dev team. You work your way up networking along the way.

i find it weird that there's this massive trend of talking about motivation and discipline, yet they never really tell you what their goal is. it's like functioning just to function. if they'd at least say stuff like "i want to inhabit mars" or "i want to make my wife and kids rich" or stuff like that. but it's always just about "being good" and i have no idea what they even want to be good for.
it's like tuning your computer to high end performance and then doing absolutely nothing with it, because it was just about making the computer as performant as you can.

instead of talking "how to get motivated to dev more" the goal should actually be "what would be cool games to make? what's actually exciting, fun, cool, hot, ridiculous, insane etc."

Demo day fanart/collage. Just like last time, to make sure people can recognize everyone, some things were taken out of the front pages. I played a lot of demos this time and left some feedback too. Lots of awesome demos this demo day.

This time, all 51 entries are in. No one was left out. Even the prototypes. Some entries were pretty damn hard to put in. See that big grey rat on the middle? That's supposed to be an enemy from MRPG. I also tried to color it this time and I think it was a fun experiment, even if it's a bit hard to spot everyone now.

I wonder if most devs are even still around, I ought to be really late by now. Sorry if I forgot someone (impossible, I hope) or if I misinterpreted the sprites like last time. Good night.

I have functions for printing synsets and hypernynms for words. I used this so I could make a list of synsets for in game actions and I will soon use it for in game objects. but recompiling with a new function input is dumb so I incorporated this function as a "define" command. Once I set up debug and release builds, "define" will be debug only.

What workflow? Put your shit in folders and use JSON structures as metadata describing each file. It's text, it works with text.
>>
If you are copying and pasting AI generated text into your projects, you already so far behind what agentic AI programming is doing, you might as well be writing assembly. You can already take your asset structure and scripts from any engine, provide metadata and context to Claude Code or Github Copilot, and will come up with an entire plan on how to implement your project in whatever language you want. You just need to provide it the structure and instructions to get started.

Someone asked about AI workflow, the workflow is use the proper tools for the proper job. Use an IDE or code editor with built in AI functionality. The workflow part is already done, they don't need to reinvent that, they just need to learn to use the right tools.

There are guidelines.
Keep your style consistent. Show the player when things change and add lots of effects to further portray things happening.
That sort of thing.

There are no measured quantities, set times in the oven, chemical reactions.
It's all just guidelines like "you make a cake with something fatty, something glutenous, something sweet"

Design is an iterative process, even if you want to get the core principles down early.

Like you think you can just pretend the software development part of video game production doesn't exist, even with AI it's not going to happen. You need knowledge of existing software development practices to properly prompt the AI. If the developer didn't need to be a dedicated position, you wouldn't need to use an engine.

watched the video and the problem is low testosterone. thinking "i should be doing <anything>" is deeply feminine and submissive behavior. also doing things because you wanna be a good boy is sub behavior.
high t solution: do nothing unless you want to and do shit because it's cool and funny and not because you want validation.
also to me nothing's more fun than learning and improving. it's like i have my personal evolution by learning more techniques and skills. it's like being some sort of mutant and new arms and brains are growing out of my body. it's like i'm extending my bodily functions.
the problem is that modern men want to become homos instead of goblin-maxxing into a mutant super villain.

Porn games don't care about quality. They care about
>Market reach (a lot of highly successful ones go for milquetoast fetishes and popular IPs, i.e. NTR, femboy. One Piece, or most things Zone puts out.)
This goes for every aspect of porn. If you want to make it big on twitter, mass produce holoslop and whatever the FOTM is.

But that's the soulless part. The other things are
>lots of cross promotionals
>aggressively frequent updates
>long-term commitment

I don't think Cr*s could handle any of the above requirements.

I don't know but you should make the text scrolling smoother by advancing only 1 character every few frames (it depends on the speed you want). Your problem is that you're advancing more than 1 character at a time and that just bothered me when watching.

I like bottom left the most, but none of them look too good anyway. Try more styles. Also you could make it a player option like the text speed.
Btw the text speed should be in time between each character appearing instead of how many characters appear at a time.

For example, "extraverted intuition" dominants get their energy from exploring new ideas, but quickly lose energy when they have to refine one idea, making them innately terrible for consistent work.

Anons I did the math. In order for a mobile game to be profitable, you have to make people spend a lot of money. You need to spend $144.000 to get 5.000 people that will play with day30 retention. I'm probably not considering many things such as in some regions it's cheaper to acquire users. And a player doesn't have to play consistently 30 days after install etc. But still...
I was trying to come up with a budget for my game so I'd know how much to ask for prom possible investors/publishers. Damn...

The numbers I used for calculating (average calculated for both platforms and min max values):
Average CPI: $3.125
D30 Retention rate: %3.8
Organic Installs Per Paid Installs: 1.85

So 5.000 d30 users mean = 131.578 installs total
Paid install percentage = 1 / (1+1.85) = %35 will be paid installs
131.578 * %35 = 46.052 paid installs will be needed
46.052 * CPI ($3.125) = $143.912,5

So regular of 5.000 users have to earn me 28 per person to make up for the money I paid to acquire them

Are there anything I'm missing in this math? I think my assumption is a user has to be play 30days straight to earn me money, and I didn't consider the interstitial ads and rewarded ads. But still they have to watch ads worth

Also at the end the effective CPI is ($144.000/131.578users) = $1.09. (I previously calculated this as $1.125)
This means I must sell disable ads item for more than $0.99 which is the normal price I assume.

Long story short, how much of an advertisement budget do you think should I have? At least until I see if my game is profitable.

i wonder why texture arrays exist, yet 3D modeling tools don't use 3D uv's so you can have different textures per face. let's say i model a house and have like 10 different textures i want to use, that i also want to repeat. i'll have to make 10 materials now. and the engine has to make 10 draw calls. with tex arrays it'd just be 1 draw call.

Where can I learn about how game engine rendering system work? I’m not interested in making vidya games, and I don’t code very much, but I'd like a deep understanding.

In my normie headcanon, a 3D game engine rendering system just consists of a sun/moon (directional light), calculated soft shadows, realistic light bounces (GI), and materials reacting to light (PBR).

Assuming your 3d world has some sort of spatial partitioning into boxes (basic grid or octtree, whatever) check if the selection box you make with the mouse is inside or intersecting the boxes in your spacial partition. So you'd likely run an OBB vs ABB intersectiopn test. Lets call the boxes that satisfy this condition "relevant boxes". Loop through each entity in each relevant box. Check if the entity intersects or is inside your selection box.

I watched Indie Game the movie and there's this scene where Phil Fish is mocking people for badgering him about the game
>durhhh come on phil what's taking so long
he's mocking everyone for pointing out that the game was taking 4 years or something. But Phil Fish did finish that game and it didn't take 10 years. It also didn't flop it was well reviewed and made lots of sales.

But basically BOKUDEV saw this movie 12 years ago and thought "wow I want to be like that I want to make a game and work on it for so long that everyone is clamoring to play it and asking me what's taking so long! I want to be like Phil Fish! And I want to be famous like Phil Fish!"

So now he has been working on bokube for 12 years and loves loves loves talking about how it's his forever game that is taking forever and "everyone is asking me what's taking so long". "The internet hates me for making this game so long haha"

See
>https://youtu.be/bAu3BYRJF2o&t=533

He doesn't give a shit about releasing this game. He is a narcissist. It's all just a way for him to pretend he is Phil Fish. But Phil Fish FINISHED FEZ. And this is the part Bokube remains in denial about.

Bokudev you are not Phil Fish. Your game has been in development for 12 years and it sucks. You are not famous. Wrap it up.

On paper you have enough time for 30 hours of gamedev a week if you optimize well, but in practice gamedev is hard enough even when you can do it full time. Still I'd rather be a wagie and have the game take 10 years than risking permanently dropping out of the workforce for a game that won't have me set for life.

i always notice the same pattern. i learn stuff and stay within my boundaries, i'm happy. i have ideas/inspiration i'm frustrated. effectuation is real. utilize what you know/can do and forget about what you wish you could do.

From what I gather most neet devs here waste all their free time on vidya and anime and fighting depression. So the wagie dev ends up working on their game more than the neet does.

For me the killer is the commute, I work from home, if I didn't I'd be crammed into a sweaty fart tube of a public transit system for hours every day because the entire western housing market is predicated on how far away can you live from the savages we imported while still being somewhere that has jobs.

This statement came after he had publicly canceled FEZ 2 in July 2014

I would like to take a moment to shill Outpostia. It's not my game, I'm just a playtester, but I do think that it has the potential to rival Rimworld since it's open world (more chunks load as your colonists move) and has Z-levels. Bro $5000 in the united states of America, in CHICAGO is nothing I don't think hes a scam artist when hes survived on 9 years of wageslaving and a tiny small kickstarter budget that was probably used a long time ago. is that why guys look back fondly on being young and broke and being with their high school girlfriend?
there is no reason for a young woman to be with a young broke guy unless she's attracted to him. almost every teenage relationship you see is from genuine attraction at least on the part of the female. this coping about relationships taking work and not being ideal is like defending homelessness by complaining about property taxes and home maintenance.
but maybe there could be a game in maintaining a relationship? like houseflipper but girlfriendflipper. I don't know how it could work mechanically or if there could even be a "correct" way to play because there are clearly correct ways to repair a house but dealing with people and their feelings is all over the place.

As an 'Ne dom', novelty decay is your biggest enemy. It's very crippling for a video game developer.
Getting something difficult done does not motivate you to work further.

>Schedules = Burnout
Self-explanatory, schedules make you too inflexible for you to utilize your Ne functions.
Just tell yourself "I want this one feature implemented today" and trick yourself into believing you can take a break right after.
Create a feedback loop, "Oh, since I have implemented X, I should probably implement Y, and oh, since I have Y now, it wouldn't hurt to do Z"
When you feel like you're starting to feel exhausted with how much work you've worked, quit immediately.
Your expectations for tomorrow are going to be "I am going to make the same or similar amount of progress", which is actually a bad thing. Your brain will think back to how exhausted it was and will try to distract you instead.

>Tiny goals.
When you set yourself a goal, make it as small as possible.
Instead of thinking "I will implement my battle GUI.", you want to have "I am going to add a health bar." as your goal.

>Brainstorming
'Ne's love brainstorming. It's the function we use to breadth-search solutions.
Brainstorming is like your annoying little brother who wants to add shit to your game that make no sense.

You need to change your perception of brainstorming from "useless daydreaming" to "energy source".
The only way to accomplish that is to decrease the scope of brainstorming so that you can actually use it for your game.
Instead of thinking "What if I made another game with this and that idea", you have to think, "How can I scale this idea down to fit into my game without exhausting me?"
So for example, if you can't decide if you want to switch your colony sim into a farming game, scale down your "farming game ideas" and fit them into your colony sim instead.
Sometimes, your game is so radically different, that the idea is scaled down to an absurdly tiny feature, but that's a good thing.

a long time. that's why when you spend a day and a half on the customizable/flexible health bar and then reuse it for all other bars (and for future games) so every subsequent bar like mana or orgasm progress or whatever takes you 10 minutes.
>>
>>552970098
I don't know where you are with your project right now, but ECS can be a pain to debug if you're not using the right environment.
During typical stack tracing in OOP, all properties are going to be where you expect them to be.
Finding the properties of an ECS "object" is terribly slow, since they're all over the place.

There are environments that accomodate for this, so I hope you use them instead of YOLO-implementing ECS from scratch.

Talking to other people about work motivation can be very confusing.
Different people have different sources of energy.
>Experiencing a routine structure (Stability) (Si users)
>Seeing long-term progress (Te users)
>Being able to interact with others or the world (Se users)
>Social obligations or feeling like you are needed by other people (Fe users)

Their sources of energy just drain me.
Looking at a schedule exhausts me.
Reflecting on my progress can feel euphoric, but ultimately exhausts me.
Interacting with real-life objects or people exhausts me.
Working for the sake of others exhausts me.

I hate how long I took to realize this. None of their motivations ever clicked with me.
Most jobs are totally incompatible, so all that I and the rest of society did was to tell me to get used to it.
The jobs most suited for Ne doms are rare or unrealistic in the modern world, like "hunter" or "search and rescue".
We have to half-ass our way into regular jobs by crippling ourselves.

Back when I was doing freelance dev work I was at a meeting with a client and his software engineer guy was telling me how the timeline I proposed was too long. The guy took out a list of things that needed to be done and went point-by-point and how long each should take and asked me if I think each is unreasonably short and I kept saying no, because indeed on paper you can do a decent health bar (or in this case a decent notification bar) in 20 minutes. The total for everything in his tally was about 1/3 of the timeline I proposed.
Nevertheless I refused to agree to any shorter deadline and the deal fell through.
So the guy decided to make the thing they wanted in-house and they did it in just under twice the time I proposed and it was missing some features that were in my offer and had nothing that my offer didn't include.
He learned that a complex programming project is more than the sum of its parts. Plan all you want, but unless your plan comes from extensive experience on completed projects, you will probably miss and by a lot.
Thank you for listening to an uncdev's lesson in project management.

>I don't know where you are at with your project
Super early stage. I'm brainstorming different EC frameworks but haven't programmed them yet. My main concern is composition

>but you're on the right track with benefits of peformance though
I feel like I understand from the context of the sparse set type but something like archetypes is unappealing to me.

I have been thinking that an ECS is overkill. The last time I used it was on a 3d engine, and I was specifically trying to do fast iteration. In fact I even had the Vulkan storage buffers work together with the ecs system.

What I like about ECS is how decoupled everything is. Lets say I am in a room, but I also want the room to be an NPC. If I want to leave the room I'll search the room component sparse set but if I want to talk to it or do some other strange interaction I'll check the other sparse set, And I use sparse sets over plain arrays because I don't want to overallocate.

What's an unc? I keep seeing that word.
Anyways, I think it depends on how advanced the rest of the project is.
Because if you also have to set up the hp system and make it work with the hp bar which is a UI element, and it also has to interact with different damage sources and so I can see the entire process taking way more than a single day.
However, the bar itself is not complicated in a vacuum. Ideally the entire project would be modular so you can just put it in there but not everyone does that, especially for outsourced production code.
>>

You can use composition in traditional OOP.
An array or list that holds all the components as structs or objects is all you need.

Yeah this makes a lot of sense
I work with a guy who I suspect is an Si user, he is very caught on routine but is somewhat of a musical genius
But he keeps trying to force his methods onto me, asking me to go back and refine my music which is NOT my thing, I kind of want it to be HIS thing to put the final touches onto the tracks and "engooden" them with his musical insights. I'm fine with composing new tracks but refinement is not my thing.

Schedules are my bane, if I have even one thing scheduled in a day it can totally derail getting any work done, I enter some sort of purgatory-like wait mode until the scheduled time comes (that could also be some ADHD shit)

Every job I've ever had has completely drained the soul and life from me, it's only now that I'm NEET that I can actually focus enough to work on a game. And yeah, they make it seem like it's your fault that you're miserable there lmao. I swear I've spent half my life trying to figure out what was "wrong" with me because I've never really fit in with the structures of modern education and work.

I have the exact same thing.

Schedules screw with my mental health because I either obsess over an appointment or deadline and I lose motivation for everything until I make it through, or I completely distract myself with electronic media.
When I am entering a week with 4 different appointments, my brain enters "power-saving" mode until the week is over. I can't seriously do anything productive.

This is all good and superior though. This is the better way. That's why most people will admit they do this exact thing. Only a psycho would say "I have to go do work on this thing or go here at 4pm I better work on even more things for 5 hours until then". Successful psychos maybe though.

Do you think about/plan your game while working? I only have enough mental energy for a solid ~4 hours of active productivity per day, but spend the majority of my remaining time planning things or doing research. If the non-active productivity time is counted, then I'm technically productive for the majority of my waking hours. This could be something to consider.

>When I am entering a week with 4 different appointments, my brain enters "power-saving" mode until the week is over. I can't seriously do anything productive.
This was me for 10 years working 5 days a week
I legit couldn't do anything besides fuck around on the internet and consume media. That was probably my least creative decade, I just didn't have it in me because it was all drained out daily. I sure as fuck daydreamed about creative stuff though, but when I got home I only had energy to rot.

>An array or list that holds all the components as structs or objects is all you need.

See that was my first thought, using a struct of component arrays or simply having the component arrays as globals. But sparse sets can have less of a memory footprint.

Lets say I am making a game with 500 entities. Then an entity index can be represented by a uint16_t.

Lets say 300 entities are rooms and 200 are 3D transforms. Lets say a room holds 64 bytes and a 3D transform holds 28 bytes. These numbers are realistic (I typed out the data structures for this example). The latter struct isn't relevant to what I'm making but I needed to come up with an example that consumed less memory than a room. This means with component arrays you are using a total of 500 * 64 + 500 * 24 = 44.92 KiB.

Now compare this to a dense set ecs. Each component will have a sparse array of 500 entity Ids, where an entity id would be 2 bytes. Then each component would also have a dense array. Each dense entry consists of a u16 to map back to the sparse array and component data. You only need as many dense entries as you have components in use. So in total the memory cost is 500 * 2 * 2 + 300 * (2 + 64) + 200 * (2 + 24) = 27.14 KiB.

What I'm concerned about is how this can scale. I was being generous. Notice how the struct of arrays won't change memory use if I change proportions (keeping total number of entities 500), but if I make way more transforms than rooms (50 rooms and 450 transforms).

500 * 2 * 2 + 50 * (2 + 64) + 450 * (2 + 24) = 18.35 KiB.

But here is the problem. I may want to create a more components that are used sparingly. This is cheap with the sparse sets. In addition, some of my existing components will grow in size. My concern is that the memory cost will balloon with component arrays.

What does make sense to me is to use a struct of arrays for a description or label component, since each entity will have one.

I’m going to be taking an extended break from game dev to focus on career related stuff.
The comfort of stable employment has caused my mentality to spiral down a dark hole of nihilism and apathy for the last few years. I truly despise my job, but through telling myself “oh well, at least I’m employed” I’ve numbed the misery and the desire to explore options elsewhere. At the moment I’m just spinning my wheels with no real future.
I realize I’ve also been using game dev as a coping mechanism to escape from that misery. Embarrassingly, at some points the idea of “making it” from my game and being able to quit this soulless job was the only thing keeping my going. Thankfully I now realize this is an immature and extremely unrealistic goal and not something I should be prioritizing right now. I’d rather have a fulfilling job and work on my game as a fun side hobby than a miserable job and treating game dev like a second job. Now is the time to find that fulfilling job and then I can focus on game dev.

Thanks for reading my blog. When I finally come back I hope to see lots of a new games.

Not to get too sappy philosophical, but I feel like a positive mentality is a fire. You need to keep feeding the fire fuel or else it’s going to go out. Try to make little steps every day towards your ultimate goal and use them as kindling to keep the fire going. Not everything needs to be another log of firewood.

Most of the time you simply need to learn keyword research and SEO on google, instagram and youtube and tiktok.

there's a bunch of books on SEO, but I remember reading the SEO bible.

If you want to actually learn marketing, also read the following.
"contagious why things catch on"
"made to stick, why some ideas survive on"
"the tipping point"
"Predictable irrational"
"The purple cow"
"The blue ocean strategy"

SEO will land you a chance to be seen by whoever search stuff.

The other books will explain why people share stuff like cat memes and trump emperor memes for free, and the other two are about bussiness stuff.

Marketing is not the most hardcore shit if you're willing to learn it like another skill.

Nah fuck that
When I was a kid I was always expressing myself creatively
Then when I became an adult and suffered through soul-numbing shit like work, bills, unloyal women, drugs, etc, etc, all of that creativity was gone, just a faint glimmer of what it used to be
I've spent the past few years rekindling that old spark of mine, and my inner child has come back out to play.
Not to sound too gay, but I think my child self would think what I'm doing now is the coolest shit ever, and that makes me feel great.

I've always been convinced that SEO is bullshit, you've got a bunch of soulless lanyard wearing corpo marketing golems getting paid to sit around trying out voodoo rituals to try to game the ever-changing internals of a black box system that they have no insight into whatsoever. Old voodoo SEO rituals that used to work probably no longer work, but they still do them just so that they don't anger the search engine gods.

Those books I guarantee have like 1 or two salient points and could just be boiled down to the length of a 4chan post. The books aimed at middle managers are always 99% filler.

Here's the trick: Make a game that people want to play.

The exact scenario is just there for testing, in future there'll be a reason for there to be dudes on the ground on a bug-infested planet... however contrived.

>>552994948
>but what's the point of being able to walk around instead of just seeing the screen all the time?
It opens up gameplay opportunities like having to go to another station to perform some other function, like clearing a malfunction on a gun, shooting a bug in the face with your sidearm after it has flown up and is trying to claw its way through the door to eat you. etc.

I use local AI (stable diffusion illustrious) outright to generate sprites, and a combination of local AI, controlnet with real life locations, and Gemini/Chatgpt for the backgrounds. Equally useless advice because different people want different games. And it's very easy to piss off an audience by doing one small thing they don't like but never talk about that you can't ever hope to reasonably know beforehand.

Just don't be a poser. I assume you'd make a game for an audience that you at least are a part of. Why would you make a game for some random group of people that you have no connection to or shared interests with unless you're cynically trying to exploit them? Are you one of those retards who try to make cozy farming games despite never having touched the genre yourself?

True I know the real Mobile Infantry are more like space marines and not cannon fodder.

I am currently aiming to make the dudes on the ground capable of holding their own, however they're still limited by ammo, which is essentially a ticking clock, and you have to take the pressure off them for long enough for them to extract.

yes that is agdg's main problem. They'll make a perfectly fine game and then slap an anime girl in the capsule art, and the retards here will clap and encourage that. Meanwhile the steam normies don't want to see anime girls in their capsule unless its a coom game, and the game flops. This is a big blindspot with agdg in particular
>>
>>552996874
In the book, they were the gunships though. They would drop into a position on the high ground. Then some would engage their jump jets and go to another position. They didn't have fine control in flight though, so straight long arching jumps. During those bounds they would let the cannons rip on the cities and towns beneath them. In the books, the bugs had a civilization with cities.
