Learn to pick your fights, don't hesitate to run away and don't reload unless you die, any fight you survive makes you stronger. Building an outpost will attract trader caravans and hostile raids. Building one too early might be more than you can handle. Pressing F1 will open the tutorial screen. Mousing over the stats screen and HUD will reveal useful tooltips and additional info. If the enemies feel too difficult - get crossbows for your units. And don't be afraid of the RP autism - engage in it whenever you can. And do unlock the sliders.

If you have a food barrel, with food it in, they will interrupt whatever they are working on and grab a bite. If the barrel is near their normal walking route, they won't even have to interrupt what they're doing, they'll just have grabbed something along the way.

But yeah, they will lose the plot if you have enough people. Even when it's obvious what they should be doing, they just won't do it.

If they're told to work on a resource, they'll automatically haul to storage, if the storage is kinda near.
If you give them explicit haul-to commands regarding where they put it all, they can extend that a bit further, but they may occasionally pause to resolve a loop.
If things are too far, the stuff they're working with will kinda unload from active memory and they won't recognize it. It won't even be named in their list properly.

You won't sell a meat roll because it's almost certain nobody patrolling through has the shopping UI & metal roll on their list. Shopping is and always will be incomplete. Let me cut right through the fat so it makes sense:

So even if you do manage to effectively weave in shopping behaviors & lists for the localized spawns their wallets are going to empty out. What this really means is the best (only workable) implementation of shopping is done in a mobile fashion, because sitting in one spot is the antithesis of the system we're offered. That is to say - the whole squad list would need to be picked over & updated, plus you would need to adopt a "temporary trading post" playstyle. Setup, receive customers for a time, teardown and move to another "fresh" area for customers with fresh wallets.

That's why shopping doesn't "work" and the mods don't go far enough - it's broken enough to require janky adaptation by the player and considerable oversight by the modder.

In my experience the more useless decor you add the better your base turns out, like those little dividing walls that look like shit to seperate beds in a barracks. If you're going for RP you could always reduce the scale to fit within the bar itself and done by a single worker. From my experience ~4-5 hydroponics farms -> 1 cooking job is the most you'll want to assign though. You want some downtime so they don't overproduce either and get their work priorities fucked and start hauling things 1 at a time

Those are the swamper storage shelves from forgotten buildings mod. I think this mod is all in-game buildings that we can't normally build. But nothing was adjust because I didn't know I could do that so no clue if those will stay. I'll have to try it out by building a swamper base later. Fine-tuning the walkways is why I never bothered but this will make it easy

The best armour you can get without dex penalty, fast weapon. Nodachi or heavy polearm, switch between the two depending on what you're fighting. Katana as a sidearm. Oldworld bow.
Heavy weapons hit hard but their animations are very slow which means you defend slower and get hit by more attacks. Polearms and katanas have very fast animations.

I know that converting around 300 animal skins into leather will get you crafting top quality armor. I don't know if crossbows have a similar grindable, but if making bolts has a similar effect, I would think you just want to get above level 80.

I'd put all the shit sabres int C tier at the very least, because they're just sabres, solid weapons, decent for dex training. No penalties against armored enemies, unlike most katanas too. I also have a massive hateboner for the moon cleaver, whenever I used it my donut couldn't hit anything with the wide baseball style swing.
