it's the first time i work on a project and i don't want to show it to anybody online. just to 1-2 friends. i'm really putting in effort and don't want to abuse this one as some attention whoring material to wip post non-stop.
Zukjeet would unironically buy this.

I wonder how gabe feels about stuff like that, if he finds it funny or just shakes his head and groans or just numb to it and doesnt care.
>>553798979Doesn't hurt to have people at least be aware that your project exists. Wish more devs posted just for that. It's always nice to see new projects. Most feedback here is art related though, it's difficult to give advice on code or gameplay. I'm not quite at the art making stage yet unfortunately so I don't post. Also, the /v/ threads have less schizos.
what zukowski says aligns with my current style of deving: just make a normal game in a genre you picked and do it well, and when you get all the traditional systems running and everything is working as usual in other games, then see what you can tweak and or expand on.he said 70% genre and 30% "shiny new thing". but i'd even say it's 85% genre.my strat is: just do normal gamedev work, like a job, nothing new, not idea-oriented, just make a normal game working. and while doing that the magic little ideas for new features will appear organically.

there's some weird effect going on that when you believe you wont make money with it, you don't try your best and also don't finish and therefore you wont make money with it. i know it's just called self-fulfilling prophecy, but there has to be some deeper psychological layer to this.i guess in selfmade business stuff you gotta believe in the reward, cause the reward is not promised. although i'd even say nothing in life is promised. so belief is important no matter what you do.and by belief i mean the the effort will be worth it, i don't mean "believing that your product, as it is, will sell", i mean believing that the effort you put into it will pay off. so even post-release you keep improving your game until it pays off.the alternative is project hopping and from my experience hopping leads to quitting gamedev completely.
it's not Gabencunt's fault. it's not anybody's fault.it's just that this jobby attracts too many talented and hard working people and there's too many great games being released all the time.it's not as bad as being a musician or a novelist but we're arguably sacrificing more by doing this for most likely no money because we could be earning well as programmers.

I had my first Haunted Chocolatier dream in a very long time(probably over a year)! It was quite fast but basically it was about entering one of the portals and that world's "gimmick" was that it got increasingly more surreal the deeper you went. Like it started very mundane and it ended up in funky colors and weird geometries. The dream ended before I saw a boss or returned to the hubworld :(
>>553807930Sounds like a wonderful dream. Sorry to hear it ended so early.
Betz stops you. "Hey anon", he says. "What are you working on?" You tell him. You expect some sort of "nice!" or "that's cool". Instead he looks you dead in the eyes and asks, "why?". What's your response?

Someone asked about open-source video games in the last thread. This is my unfinished open-source game - let me know if it still even runs. Basic controls are spacebar, mouse click and pressing numerical 1. There's a boss at lvl 100.I probably should add a README listing the bugs, missing features, and ideas, but most of that becomes obvious pretty quickly, especially if you look through the scripts. As for future ideas, anyone interested in finishing it will likely have their own vision anyway. Also kudos to any gen-Z and especially gen-alpha who post the link to what inspired the gameplay.https://github.com/FlameViper/BillyMandyThe problem with open source is that ... you also require publicity for people to even care. You're not Quake, Unreal, Half Life to catch people's attention even if you do open source it.

>>553713846>Betz here. Believe me I'm going to give it my all this year. I have a strategy in mind to try and get an audience off board and I've already talked about this with a couple of the production team but this year's going to be very different in terms of presentation. Not to go into a wall of text here but I do have this feeling that we're sort of hitting a ceiling with 4chan being our primary audience But on the flip side it's very hard to gain an audience that isn't 4chan due to the stigma with the site>Hell I even asked someone who works with a publisher If they would be interested in helping promote the game and I was told no because they don't want to have a connection to the site. So part of what I'm trying to do this year is to find the balance between the two to where I don't alienate the 4chan audience but I don't push away the rest of the internet. How about making a game jam that is open to all and isn't linked to 4chan and then make a showcase for it (without it replacing the existing showcase for this general)?Even better if the games highlighted (or given more screen time) during the show are the ones that look better and/or closer to completion.I.e. A "free for all" and let the cream rise to the top kind of thing.I know it would piss some people off but if you want to expand your audience without alienating most devs here an option would be to get them to compete with the games made by devs from other places. And yes, I know this would probably be a brutal reality check for some. But it would also be an opportunity to improve and get better by seeing what other possibly more capable devs can do instead of having your game confined to this general, which in a way acts like a safespace.Besides it wouldn't be mandatory to join, so only the interested would need to.

I don't want to make a videogame, because even the smallest game takes 7-8 years now to develop working 10 hours every day non stop. What I want is something between a light novel and a manga with background sounds and CSS animations, made in a game engine like godot.

I realized somethingPosting in these threads is like a dirty and quick dopamine rushIt feels good, but is inherently self destructiveWhat you want is that good shit, that pure shit, that progress shit.Working on your game is a pure dopamine rush, making actual tangible progress and being able to show it off. But even then, you can't be tempted to reveal your shit too soonAs Sakurai once said, you must keep the internal pressure. Progress posting is good, but it also may suck you into a loop of quick and dirty dopamine if you're not carefulOn that note, now is time to stop posting and work on your games

>>553808753>>553811990This way both Betz and the aggy devs who join the jam can benefit.Betz can expand the audience of the show and the devs who choose to participate in have the chance to become known by a lot of people from outside of 4chan.Also if it's a success it might MOTIVATE some of those who didn't join to improve their skills and do it the next time. This general's devs have nothing to lose from this and possibly a lot to gain.Worst case scenario your game gets ignored, best case scenario you multiply your followers.
