Fuck valve and fuck fatfuck gabencunt

Blog post incoming, take cover!Yesterday I prepared my tax return and filled out some big form and took it to the bank and wanted to fix a Steam Deck control bug for my previous game. Somehow the first two seemed like bigger tasks that would take up my entire day but they took 2 hours total and that's with me taking the bus to the bank and back. The bug I needed to fix eventually spiraled into having to recreate the entire project which took 5 hours and I still can't get the game to run. So that's what I'll be doing today.Funny how bad I was at estimating how much what will take. I do the tax returns and the kyc form every year and it's all pretty straightforward. I wonder how off I am with estimating how long my current game will take to finish. The cashier girl frowned at me because she had to key in three single donuts manually. I think I'll go with 4 different donuts tomorrow. Privileged jobhavers shouldn't frown at the unemployed underclass.

Naive Dev here, why aren't we seeing more 3D GTAs in the indisphere?Retro gaming has been big since forever, and the PS2 era is finally getting more prominent in the indi sphere by the year.So why are there seemingly no attempts?Am I looking in the wrong spot?
>>554637657and no one celebrated, it was a slow painful process of the powers that be chipping away at flash and Adobe letting it happen because it wasn't their biggest money maker.html gamedev still aint at flash level a decade later.
>>554637967china won
>>554637967Because gabencunt made it unviable. Why make a GTA which requires tons of effort when you can shit out yet another vampire survivors clone for no effort and make even more?

>>554637657you can blame the downfall of Flash on Steve Jobs because he didn't want iPhone/iPad users playing games via the web browser but from the App Store
>>554638191>Because gabencunt made it unviable. Why make a GTA which requires tons of effort when you can shit out yet another vampire survivors clone for no effort and make even more?
>>554638168all the chinese usually do is copy other works, I haven't seen something that's original from there side, and mostly it's anime gooner slop SURE it does sell, but there should still be a real market out there for PS2 era style open worlds that could open up around...pretty much now.
>>554638580>all the chinese do is copy other works, i want a based westoid to copy it instead
>>554638524He's unironically right though. GTA clones aren't viable on steam. There's a fucking ton of ps2 era GTA clones on the google play store but you never see any on steam.
>>554638648Most GTA clones also aren't good period.
>>554638580>I haven't seen something that's original from there sidethis extolling of originality is extra funny coming from a general that worships a Harvest Moon cloner. not saying you personally are one of them.

What game has the best destructible environment and terrain manipulation/construction?Hard mode: No voxelsop
>>554637212>>554637363Seriously, are there some particular classes involved with snapping objects to a grid/other objects?
Man, now that I've updated some stuff for my game the demo I released seems kind of shit in comparisonDo I update the demo to better reflect the final product or do I let it stay mediocre?
>>554639125ok?real plot twist would be if they both have the same gamplay.
>>554637363i got two methods. the first is easy, just place a wall next to the last placed object. since all my objects are split equally width-wise, a lot of work for determining position is just using the last placed object's position and half the width of both objects.the other method is using empty gameobjects that are just 'snap-points', as in, the new object's transform should overlap the older object's transform. this is useful for corners and any weirdly shaped prefabs.it's stupid to use two methods but when i started off i thought i could get away with just the first one, then i needed the second and left them both in. i recommend just doing it with snap points, the math's easier and simpler to use.>>554637598no way, this is too far advanced for me.
>>554638634I don't have a problem with copying some things, but I would expect a bit more creativity from a country of that size and dominance in the world market.Say what you want about america, but at the very least you get "something" creative from time to time if your dig through the sludge.
>>554639860Thank you.
Why hasn't anyone made an FPS MMO?
>>554639768what is the purpose of a demo?
browsing pol makes me realize that 4chan was always left-wing and left-wingers larping as nazis. although nazis were socialists. so it's basically national socialists vs international socialists and neet socialists who need money.it's weird how nobody wants capitalism anymore. even on /r/capitalism it's all just anti-capitalism.the problem to me is that socialism wont fix my life, but more capitalist success as an individual will fix my life. i don't want to end up being this desperate neet constantly in fear that the neetbux run dry. i want stable success. and i wont achieve that with socialist mindsets.i need my capitalist safe-space where working and earning money is allowed and not moralized and looked down upon.

>>554639860>>554640007i realized when i hit send that the snap point explanation wasn't very good. to restate, i have two empty gameobjects named SnapPointA and SnapPointB that are placed at the ends of the object. when placing an object i try and make the snaps from two different objects overlapignore my bad formatting, it took me a long time to get a formula that worked and i never bothered to clean up disclaimer: i'm not a good programmer. this is just a cleaned up dungeon generation room-placement script i cleaned up from 'monvo. you're better off asking someone better for help later but this is probably a good starting point.

>>554640304Thank you. This is an interesting approach. Since all the elements in my game are basically unit cubes meant to be on a 3D grid, I'm wondering if I could make some sort of an invisible guide cube for every prefab.

animal well dev is my new idol. no shortcuts. took him 7 years. just learned programming and tried to make something out of the skills he learned. didn't have clear vision, just dev'ed until something came together organically.also tried 3D first but then realized that 2D is more viable for a solodev. also said that he doesn't like to dev in a team and prefers working alone.also seems kinda resistant to evangelist trying to shill him godot, jai, odin, neovim and other shit. he just uses c++ and visual studio and that's it. i'm kinda annoyed of neet nodevs trying to sell me their latest trend tech and wanting me to hate the old proven ways.also he seems kinda in touch with the reality that if you don't finish a game you are hardstuck as a wagie. so he doesn't have his head in the clouds like perma neets.interview i watched: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YngwUu4bXR4

i wonder if "optimizing later" is valid, if i know exactly how to optimize it (yes i really do), yet i want it to be more flexible right now in case i make changes.in my case: i don't want to use burst compiler and native collections and jobs/threading yet to calculate some stuff.
>>554642160>also he seems kinda in touch with the reality that if you don't finish a game you are hardstuck as a wagie. so he doesn't have his head in the clouds like perma neets.I think the punishing reality of entry level jobs is something everyone should experience at least once

the most popular mindset i don't buy into is idea guying, market analysis and theorizing what sells.to me it's all about knowing who i am, what i can do and where to start at. and then i can start building around that. and then i can slowly expand, but only step-wise from where i'm at.this approach is totally impossible with the popular mindset of setting goals and having perfect ideas.i also don't buy into that idea of knowing what your game will be like right from the start. to me it's a progress. i can have ideas as some sort of direction to start and do something, but i'll abandon those ideas for better ideas along the way.tynan made a wizard school simulator and ended up making sci-fi kino. he kept parts of his original idea, but everything else completely shifted.what i like the most about my approach is that you can immediately start working, as you only have to know what you can do and actually use it to implement features and the rest will just naturally happen along the way. you don't need goals or ideas to start. you just need to know yourself and who you are and what you can do.

>>554650210This is the exact opposite. Most of what you do when working with an LLM is reading its output if you want high quality code. So the easiest languages to read are the ones that benefit the most. Ruby reads almost like spoken English. You want your language/engines to be similar. Type annotations everywhere just get in the way of understanding what the code does. The AI doesn't need types to write correct code, it just does it correctly (as long as you guide it properly) by default.

>>554660026You can't.In this case you gotta "handle yourself" which means that you have to improvise and force the things to go well. For example, let's just say that you need four people to move a piece of forniture, you can't find three people? Handle yourself! You move the piece of forniture alone instead of trying to find another solution which is impossible.Your production must not be slowed down or, even worse, interrupted by problems that don't actually exist; personally, I am here to save the entire planet and not to complain.
>>554660219I guess I'm not good at making new friends. Most people I'm friends with or close is into gaming, but try as I might to convince them to work on something with me they just find excuses on why they wouldn't do it. So in the end I realized that the only feasible way for me to release a game is to do it solo and then hire someone to work on art.
>>554660527I'm not talented enough to go all the way alone. I know there are some who can both draw and write all on their own, as well as having somehow attention span enough, but it's not me, and I don't want it to hinder my dream. I'm sure there are people somewhere that in the same boat as me, but I guess it's like dating – finding someone without being involved first is a pain. Also wtf is this new captcha shit

When somebody mentions Steam refunds as an advantage of Steam when talking to devs, it's a surefire way to know you're talking to a nodev.Valve allows you to refund a game for the reason "Purchased by accident", even if your game is not included in a bundle of any kind. You don't "purchase a game by accident", not with the way Steam is set up. Considering that if your game is DRM free/only uses Steam DRM, then it's trivially easy for your game to be pirated with refund abuse. It's a very real thing that turdies practice. So no, Steam refunds are not beneficial to devs. Not at least with the way they're currently set up now.
>work for ConcernedApe studio aka Eric "Stardew Vallet" Barone>200k a year>daily N-word out the open window>spend all day stealing assets>make important connections with his nepoboss dadWhy the fuck is this guy still complaining? Literally my dream.

>>554663062It's trivially easy to pirate any game.Steam's "DRM" is a joke.
>>554663401Y'know, I'd much rather they just pirate the damn game than buy it and refund itAt least the pirates are honest
>>554663227eric paid him 600k to make stardew mods for 3 years
>nooo you can't just blindly yesdev>nooo you cannot start deving without an idea>you have to spend years overthinking and planning and analyzing the market and trendsprogress proves me right
>>554663401And with the way refunds work right now, steamies can literally commit fraud and straight up steal games by buying games, cracking them, and then refunding them. But of course nobody ever talks about that. I just came across a video that came out around the time refunds came out and only ONE dev mentioned that in a series of interviews, and even then that point was quickly handwaved away.
>>554663589Again, they could do it without this refund thing so why do you care so much?Because it adds a +1 to your refund stats on Steam?

>reasonable price tagTo steamies, a "reasonable price tag" for a 100 hour 3D RPG with in-depth gameplay and story with lots of choices is 20 dollars. That's full price.

>>554664479My game is good the steam algorithm ignores me
>>554664680Yeah?I can get The Witcher 3 for like $5 on sale.I can get Elden Ring for like $30 on sale.$20 for a 100 hour RPG that has worse visuals and probably worse gameplay than the above games seems reasonable tbqh senpai. There are very few indie games I would pay more than $20 for and basically 0 I would pay more than $30 for.

>>554665263OK I will, thank you for the advice.
>>554665173>Thomas Brush wants to charge $40 for Twisted Toweroh no no no
>>554665398There aren't two separate markets bud. You're competing with every AAA game ever made.
>I can get The Witcher 3 for like $5 on sale.10 year old game.>I can get Elden Ring for like $30 on sale.4 year old game. There is a difference between an old game that barely brings in any money having its price permanently slashed and a new indie game that just released. But go ahead, continue pushing down that path. What will happen is devs will just use AI slop to make up the difference between a 1MA/small team and a team of salaried professionals so they can compete with these games.
>>554665590If I haven't played Witcher 3 before then yeah it's an objectively better use of my money/time than your rpg.Where it gets fuzzy is people who already played Witcher 3 and are looking for a new game.
>>554665576ok dummie keep playing dumb.hint for you, if you are actually seriously this dumb: why then do indie games still sell?
>>554665793Because people have already played games like Witcher 3 and Elden Ring and want something new.Being new doesn't inherently give your game more value.Especially when most indie games end up looking like something from 1999 anyway.
people playing the witcher 3 and elden ring arent gonna play ur game theyre normies and its a complete different market i know because i played those games and games from here seem boring
why would i still buy photoshop when excel exists? why would i make a pixel art app, when maya exists? why would i buy substance painter, when wordpress exists?this is the shit logic you guys have.

>>554666139>X game but YYou just described every game. Every game, indie or AAA, is derivative.>Elden Ring: Dark Souls but open world>Undertale: Mother but a bullet hell>Pong: Tennis but digital
The prize for the /v/3 jam is $100? I make more than that on Onlyfans in a day.
>>554663062I am more likely to purchase a game on steam because I can refund it if it's garbage. If it's on a platform that makes it difficult to refund then I wont ever touch it in the first place.
>>554666331That's exactly my point friendo. Pretending Undertale is as different from Mother as Photoshop is from Excel is pure cope.
>>554666289If you're a well known dev you can get away with charging more but since we're all nobodies you have to have a low price to be competitive. That is one of the only edges you have in this market: the fact that your game didn't cost a billion dollars to make.
You don't need a game.
>>554666485>you have to have a low price to be competitiveAnd this is only because game developers (as a general collective) are literal cucks who have no backbone and give in to every single fucking gamer demand, no matter how unreasonable it is.I don't say we should price roguelike metroidvanians at $40 just because we made it but I do believe that it's about damn time developers should start valuing their own labour more. For example, if your game has voice acting (human), and a unique music track for every level/area (also not AI) then you can confidently add $20 to your price. That's just one example off the top of my head.

Those guys are charismatic and act like clowns to entertain their audience. Or if a streamer gets easily tilted and rages at games, for example. But why would anyone want to watch someone as mundane and uninteresting as this? It just baffles my fucking mind.

/agdg/ greatly suffers from the same mindset Indians have. Instead of trying to improve themselves, they try to find ways to put others down and lower their ranking on the totem pole. That's why there's constant discussions on increasing the entry fee to Steam and hindering the visibility of certain genres. Like instead of just making a good game, just make it so people less fortunate (or smarter) than you can't even enter the competition.
Alright, getting to work on my Vulkan Voxel Raymarcher now.
>>554669606true. TRUE.
>>554669893>believing in self-improvement>believing in meritocracy
>>554669893>hindering the visibility of certain genresThat is already happening on Steam though. It's not deliberate, or at least I hope it isn't, because the algorithm is exclusively revenue oriented. So this means that genres that are more expensive to work in, and are also more niche, like RPGs or immersive sims, end up being throttled by Steam because they won't ever make nearly as much money as say the 6 millionth Vampire Survivors clone that cost nothing to produce or a friendslop game.

I have a solid premise for a game plot wise, and the programming and art skills required to execute it. The thing I am not experienced with is game design. How do I make sure my core loop is actually fun from moment to moment so the player doesn't get bored?
https://youtu.be/fY4pZovL1Uo?si=_Ncj6z1zcvbj7A1EThis game is a prime example of the phenomenon I will call "Twitter Poisoning"If you post on twitter with the intention of marketing, you will inevitably and unconsciously change the game to do better on twitter. This game is a sidescrolling platformer but from the trailer I can tell right away the camera is zoomed in way too far. It's going to be so miserable to play when you can't see what's 2 feet in front of you.The reason it's like this is because it looks better in a 10 second twitter video when the character is bigger and easier to see.Too bad he ruined his entire game for views.

>>554663062It'd be fine if they actually punished refund abuse but they don't because they're lazy as shit and refuse to do the job developers pay them to do. Did you guys know if you get blocked from refunding because you abuse the system you can just request a refund again and again until they cave and give you one? They always cave too.

>>554677562Idk what the wishlist amount would be but im sure valve can come up with something given their massive stats and analytics they have over the decades. If devs want to buy wishlists that is fine, its just another monetary barrier for slop devs while people that actually put in effort won't have to worry about it.But the truth is valve won't do anything about it because they only care about money and its obvious that their current set up is making them the most bank regardless of how much shit people push in. They couldn't care less about developers making games with effort
>>554676881People say this but the average agdg game performs better review wise than the average game on steam
>>554677684The average Steam refund rate is around 10%. No game flopped because of refund abuse. My total flop that earned me $200 in its first year has a 12% refund rate.
>>554678089>The same general that regularly discusses ways to scam the system, find get rich quick schemes, and use AI shortcuts would TOTALLY get their act together and make a good game if they were asked to
>>554677684>It'd be fine if they actually punished refund abuse but they don't because they're lazy as shit and refuse to do the job developers pay them to do.That's literally what I implied. They have absolutely no restrictions or control for refunding within the 2 hour limit. And even if you do pass the 2 hour limit, you can still file a support ticket asking for a refund and they'll give you one anyway. The only real restriction that you have as a user when refunding as far as I am aware is the game being in your library for a week. Only after that can you not refund it anymore and even then if you are insistent enough they may give it to you anyway.
>it works
>>554678758>ways to scam the system, find get rich quick schemes, and use AI shortcuts wouldWhy do you think these topics are so prevalent? Because the system itself is shitty and unfair. The only thing that matters to Valve's algorithms is how much money you make. And when you boil every fucking thing down to how much money one makes, then all sense of morality, quality and integrity goes out the window.
The entire /v/3 server simping over a confirmed female discord user and begging her to play their games is honestly hilarious and made me laugh harder than I have in years.
>>554678756>The average Steam refund rate is around 10%.Assuming the games are of an average quality, that's still too high. Refunds should only be made if the product is of an extremely poor quality, or the user's machine doesn't run it. And since Valve doesn't check whether or not the game doesn't ACTUALLY work on your PC or if you are just lying about it on the refund window, there is no way to know for certain if those 10% average really do represent that many personal PC setup issues. The only reason the average refund rate isn't higher is because the average steamie doesn't even know you can abuse the system. Most steamies don't even know how to troubleshoot games themselves besides asking on the forums "UHM, MY GAME DOESN'T WORK, FIX IT DEV!" (without providing system specs and explaining the problem as well).
>Let's just make it so you can't refund games anymoreIndian general.
>>554676516So the reason this game is bad is because the camera is too far but in the trailer isnt too far and this happened because the dev is changing the game to do better on twitter? You are telling us that the dev changed the game to have a far camera so he could zoom in only on twitter's posts to get more views?Be honest.
>>554679351Who? What game
>steam shill thinks wanting better control and oversight over the refund process to prevent abuse = wanting refunds gone entirelyBy the way, gabencunt would love to revert to not having refunds at all because they're affecting his bottom line as well, not just the individual dev.Valve literally had to be dragged into court kicking and screaming by the Australian government and was demanded to add refunds by legislature.
>>554679917>The refund system should benefit me and me alone Every time
>>554679760I was promised this refund 3000 years ago
>>554679436Ok but it's still 10% so it's $900k instead of $1M or $900 instead of $1k. And you're not considering how many of those sales wouldn't have happened at all if Steam users didn't know they could refund the game easily. Keep in mind that Steam is the only ones who actually lose money when a product is refunded. You simply lose the money you would have got from the sale, but Steam pays the transaction costs. So if Steam is so generous with refunds even though they're the only ones losing money by refunds, it's probably because they calculated their refund policy actually encourages sales.
>>554679516The worst part about this general is that it's the same anons with an indian mindset advocating indian behaviors calling yesdevs "jeet", and they're all too low IQ and red goated to self-reflect. >>554680793Caring about refunds is extremely low-IQ lack of thinking. There's a reason the retail meta is to take refunds with no questions asked. No one ever got rich pinching pennies and trying to save money. They got rich by scaling up and making a shit ton of money.
>>554680129>And you're not considering how many of those sales wouldn't have happened at all if Steam users didn't know they could refund the game easily.I don't think it works that way, but anyway this is not what this is about. You're either retarded or intentionally misrepresenting the message at hand, but the problem isn't in the refunds itself, but in the fact that Valve doesn't do anything to prevent abuse, which is a known thing that even /v/ admits to doing. Why do you think Denuvo exists? Because big publishers know that Steam DRM is useless and piracy could've been much bigger with refund fraud. So they invested into a second protection ring to avoid this.

>>554681127Two hours is not the same for every game. Final Fantasy X wouldn't be one of my favorite games if I took it back to the store after only two hours of playing it. Atlus would go bankrupt if people refunded the Persona games because they weren't immediately exciting in the first two hours.
>>554675869It doesn't matter how they get the money or how fast it takes to do so, the point is setting entry point high enough that publishing a game on steam requires a minimal amount of financial commitment.>>554675894I can confidently say every project I have worked on is shovelware slop>>554676102You're right, that's too low. >>554681581>you can pirate a game without abusing refunds. that's what most people do.There's still issues. Various piracy sites can be blocked or flagged by internet providers, and in the West you can also get into actual trouble for it if you get caught. Then there's the issue of viruses as well. The only reason why refund fraud isn't common is because it's not talked about nearly as much. Not many steamies know what "Goldberg" is, for example.>not to stop people from cracking at home.It most certainly works as a secondary safeguard against that as well.

The progression system in Balatro is done in a way that you can see at all times what you are trying to accomplish. In everyhand you must select hand to play, in each round you must reach a particular score, every 3 rounds you have a "boss fight"round, after that boss fight you increase your "ante" which can be seem as a world in Super Mario games, and you can seethat you must reach 8 antes to beat the game. By having a "visible progression" you can "abuse" the reward system of the player's brain by placing rewards in each of those in-between moments, and Balatro do exactly that. Every hand played you feel the dopamine entering by hoping youwill make the right amount to go to the next level, even if you don't reach it you still get the dopamine from hoping you will draw good cards. After dopamine hits from each hand played or discarded the player get more dopamine to see what the store will give them the opportunity to buy, and inside that store you get a reroll button and 2 packs of random cards. As you can see exploiting that dopamine is the most important feature in Balatro, and you can use in your games freely toimprove retention. You get dopamine not by seeing the results of a roll of dices, you get dopamine before you roll it. Dopamine gives you "strength" to do something because you know you can get some reward. And for some reason that dopamine hit is bigger if the player can't know for sure what they will win.

>>554696410You're forgetting that some games on Steam don't have any DRM at all. So in some cases you don't even need to use Goldberg or any DRM cracker at all.
