Zexal has much stronger separations between the one-off 1-episode villain duels and the duels that are important to a recurring character, and the animation budget often bumps up once something important is going on.With Arc-V and Vrains they tried to disperse the plot relevant pieces more evenly to make all the eps feel more strongly serialized on the surface, but then the whole show tanks off a cliff in energy when it meanders around without strong enough goals going on

>>554716593Arc-V's early cast before the megabloat were overall a lot easier to like and felt somewhat closer down to earth than how Zexal started off its first season. The premise had just enough of an interesting twist on the common 'elemental continents' idea from jrpgs like Golden Sun or the continents in The Last Airbender (just replace elements with monster summoning) where there was a very urgent reason for why everyone was isolated from each other so harshly and completely, leading to characters of very different backgrounds and world knowledge to feel the surprise of discovering each other. People just wanted the og characters to talk to each other a lot more often in a sincere way, even if the plot writing was always going to be a mess. A lot of other things can be half forgiven by the characters, but there wasn't much chance for that either
