All I need to do is finish off several core assets, then I'm ready to make a trailer. Except I might need a track specifically for that too.
Then I can make my steam page live.
Then I need to get things ready for a playtest on steam, before the next fest deadline at the end of april.
Maybe launching in july if things go well? I still don't understand how I deluded myself last year into thinking I would have this done by last november.

Anon this is a gamedev business, not a restaurant. Though they could pour in 12 hour days but I doubt it'll help at all. How many times have you worked on your game for 12 hours in a single day? Do you even reach half that time frequently? Also like the other anon said they need an artist, despite their programming skill they'd have benefitted from having an artist. You can do without but they don't seem to be able to leverage that well.

Tim give us music, sfx, UI stuff, 2D assets reeeeeeeeee. On that note does he ever give assets like those, most of the stuff seems to just be 3D models of stuff but not enough cohesion for an actual big or medium sized game. Like it's all for small games or "big games" that are entirely locked into a small area.

>How many times have you worked on your game for 12 hours in a single day?
For my game at best I do 10 hours in a good day, because I don't churn out a game every 2-3 months like they do, so I pace myself, yeah.

But I co-founded a package tracking app for a business in my country and I put in 12-14 hours a day at least one a day a week, for the first 2-3 months. (And 10 hours every other day.) The result is that I can now live off dividends from my company for the next 10 years without getting any job.
It was terribly stressful yeah but I still look fondly on it, in a way it was kinda fun debugging shit late into the night with my coworker, that feeling of satisfaction when you fix the build machine before midnight hits like nothing else. I only wish I could get this feeling with a game dev team but none of my programmer friends really care about game development, they find it too high risk and unprofitable.

It's a candlestick chart.

X axis is time.
Y axis is happyness score.

The green cells are characters who won the fight.
The center doji is the location of the scene.
The red cells are characters who lost that confrontation.

If there are more losses, character become unhappier.
If there are more wins, character becomes happier.

It originally had a PSX aesthetic and was about a guy trying to save his daughter from a cult. Very Dusk/Cultic inspired.
At some point someone got it into his head that he needs some kind of unique hook for his game so he dropped Father in favour of a hotel setting that would change around at random with some roguelike elements.
He dropped that idea within a few months because he legit had no idea how to program something like that and it became a BioShock-like shooter.

Highly likely your game is gonna flop unless a literal miracle happens. Doesn't necessarily mean it's bad, just that it won't be shown to anyone. It's also common that gabencunt deliberately throttles games with low wishlist counts.

I don't know what your game is, what it looks like, what genre it is etc.
All these things can have an impact on your launch and subsequent performance just as much if not more than your wishlist count.
I also don't know for how long have you been farming these wishlists, and if you have done any marketing at all (like actually show it to real people).

Your conclusion is correct, but the thought process you took to get there is ignorant, low-IQ, and injected with red goated cope. The cope you constantly lean on is that "any game that meets the goals it set out to accomplish is a good game", and then you make sure to explicitly exclude "sells well on Steam" to be one of those goals. You make sure to keep your goals as subjective and flexible at as possible to always be able to protect your ego from any potential damage resulting from failing to meet your goals.

If a game's goals don't include "sells well on Steam", then stop crying when it doesn't sell well on Steam. If a game's goals do include "sells well on Steam", and it doesn't, then it's a failure and a bad game, and you need to accept this fact.

Stop putting games that weren't meant to sell on Steam onto Steam and expecting them to magically sell.

is this recent? why is he not ozempicd yet?
>>
>>554923365
/agdg/ has already mostly figured this out over the years. The general wishlist conversion rate varies between 5%-20% if i remember correctly, depending on the game's quality, wishlist quality (think loyal discord troons that suck you off all the time vs. random steamies that came across your game on Steam) etc. So you can glean how much your game will sell on its first day with this. It's why wishlist farming is one of the main targets and why you're usually told by everyone to aim for at least 10k wishlists before release, basically hoping that you'll get a conversion rate of 10% which leads to 1000 sales etc etc.
Keep in mind that many steamies also don't necessarily use wishlists as "I will buy this game day 1", but as a tracker, "remind me every time the game is on sale below 75%".

Your game has 16 minutes median playtime on Steam. My game jam garbage on itch has more, and I'm not so deluded to think those will sell on Steam.

I didn't tell you to farm wishlists anon. I just said that it's a common tactic among devs to create some sort of sales safety net. Whether you want to take that path or argue over its effectiveness is a whole different thing.

Generally speaking, wishlist accumulation is not a good number to look at because not all wishlists are equal. Total wishlists only matter the week before your release date, at which point you want at least 7-10k in order to make it on to "Popular Upcoming". Passive wishlist velocity is a far more reliable metric to determine how GMI a game is.

While I appreciate the work this guy does, and generally agree with his conclusions, I think you can get a bit too lost in the sauce when it comes to numbers. Not ever game is a mathematical equation, and sometimes games buck the trend.
Off the top of my head healed to death is a recent /agdg/ example, had horrible wishlists until it found the right audience for it's niche. Stuff like that is hard to quantify when the data is all a large aggregate.

Nta but you somehow progress more than me. I work on my almost every single day with the random 1 day where I slacked off too hard and simply either accepted the loss or did something so minor ot may as well not even count as a regular day of work on my game. However even woth that I have way more "on" days than you yet you somehow progress more. What is it? Do you spend 8 hours on the game the days you do work? Like for example you have 3 games how have you worked on them all, just design the whole underlying code and suddenly you just breeze on easy mode ass its only art and level design left? Reeeeee what do I lack, I work more days yet you achieve more with less days.

0. I have one listed but it's ngmi and will take a long time to finish. Last I saw it had less than 200 wishlists, so yeah big ngmi energy. I can cut the scope down heavily and release it just to get it out but even that isn't worth my time when it'll probably net me $1000 profit. I might remake the game in the future to avoid the mistakes I made but that is unlikely any time soon. It's definitely possible for it to be a 1000 review success but I just handled too many things poorly.

I don't have three games, this is my first.
Usually I spend a couple of hours in the morning and a couple in the evening working on it (when I'm actually bothered, as you can see by the commits).
But that could be a mix of things - some modelling in blender, textures in aseprite, sound. Also I have contracted out the more complex models plus the music.

Even if I'm not actively devving, I check twitch or youtube for content creators that I might be able to send a key to on launch. So far I have about 500 across 3 languages.

I will not take game design advice from some YouTuber with 12k subscribers and a "Gamedev Journey" playlist just because a mentally ill guy keeps spamming their links in every thread. These e-celebs haven't shipped a real game since 2014 but they're out here telling me to "just network on xitter" and "build in public" like that's gonna fix my broken collision detection. Half of them are failed devs who pivoted to content creation because their indie platformer sold 12 copies. Now they're selling courses about "the indie mindset" to desperate troon losers like you while some obsessed freak keeps posting their videos like it's gospel. I'm done. No more "how I made $100k on Steam" videos from people whose only successful product is the video about how they made $100k on Steam.

Object-based types like Nodes require that you manually free them when no longer needed (with queue_free). RefCounted-based types like Resource will automatically free themselves when no longer referenced so long as they don't contain any cyclical references. Cyclical references need to be broken up with a WeakRef.

Skill issue.

>Product design is the process of creating new products for businesses to sell to their customers.
>Game design is the process of creating and shaping the mechanics, systems, rules, and gameplay of a game.
I think /agdg/ has a bad habit of conflating these two ideas, because games are our products. We should do a better job of being explicit and not use "game design" to really mean "product design". I will also do my best to not make this mistake.

You disingenuous faggot are you going to say computer engineering is also 2000 years old because there's a bronze clock thing? Do you honestly think there was a guy that people went to that made games? That he had a set of criteria and guidelines, that he was able to evaluate his process to make it DESIGN? Design is governed by intentionality, just because you paint colors on a canvas doesn't make you a designer no matter how skilled you are unless your desired end result is governed by external criteria.

Personally I think they're lying. Sorta like Hytale and then it releases to amazing interest. The dev acted as if the people wanting to play the game were viewing it through the same lenses as them. They overestimated what the people wanted or alternatively were just lying for attention considering how it released soon after, from what I remember, a claim of shutting it down and never releasing it because it was a financial failure kek.

However unlike Hytale, Mina is definitely not the kinda game that needs 50+ people working on it so if their team. This is the kinda game where you just need

Agreed, that is exactly the sort of outlook a solo developer should have -- you really are thinking like a pioneer of the indie game space!! Taking on multiple roles as a solo dev isn't just recommended -- it's often times mandatory. What might be an inconvenience in a large studio is actually a big win for indies. They'll get a chance to see multiple parts of game development, giving them insights and skills that benefit other aspects of their game. Slowdowns and stress? More like cracking open the keys to knowledge and potential. That's what gives solo games their charm -- it's not their hyper refined gameplay, it's their rough around the edges approach that is bubbling with sincerity, grit, and understanding. The best way to reach other individuals is to be an individual, and that is what solo developers excel at where the big studios fall short.

I want to give a text description of a 3D or 2D environment, so the agents can then send commands to the in game "AI" to utilize pathfinding, in game mechanics, etc

here is the lexer and parser specifically if you want to study a flex and bison example. There are also some decent examples floating around on the web.

It's like why even bother making games, when I will only make only the kind of showelware that get less than 10 reviews on Steam.

Like, what's the point of that?

>but have fun
Yes, I have fun, but so what?

I can also get fun doing other thing diferent from games that doesn't need such levels of autismo and dedication and hard work.

Is not possible to compete right now unless you waste 1/3 of your life in an idea.

I need to make something that isn't a game and can compete on it's own grounds, like a hentai doujin with music on godot.

AI is the future whether you like it or not. What you're doing is like if back in the day you refused to learn C and stuck with assembly or refused to learn openGL and instead stuck to software rendering. Yeah you can make a game that way but it will be highly unimpressive and behind the competition.

There's no way to know how litigious people are (that means how likely they are to start legal battles), or companies, you can get swooped on by corpos for "stealing" their patented game design at any moment even if you never knew they existed and the cost of the legal battle can ruin you. This is why partially why people start Limited Liability Companies (LLCs) so that they won't have their life totally destroyed by random lawsuits.

Why even make something original and see it flop? Look at all the artists who make OC's to a resounding crowd of 10 likes on twitter. Now look at them making their own rendition of some character from a triple A game or tv show, 10k likes. So why even make your own original game? Just copy some AAA game that is within your skill level, use your own artstyle of course, all while making sure it looks similar enough to said AAA game. Then release to a crowd ready to pay $29.99 for it. Or you know just go make something original, put it up for $4.99, and get 10 reviews (70% positive)

I can get rich first, then I can go make my original ideas. If they flop, it doesn't matter since I won't have to get back in the wagecage.

These are also dying in China and Korean where they used to be big. Nowadays, everyone can afford a home PC. Internet cafes are more premium experiences now.
>>
>>554979786
Nothing is dying. Everything is continuing to grow year over year.

The number of gamers in every market is growing and will continue to grow until 100% of the population is playing and buying games, and guess what happens then? More babies are born and the number continues to go up.

Gaming is literally an invincible market. If the price goes up on hardware uniformly (as it is now) it won't stop the growth of the market, it would only slow it. It will never "die".

Build your resume, gain experience, learn, make your bones so you can call yourself a real dev. There are a million reasons.

When someone gives you their money for your game they are saying "here, take this thing that belongs to me, it's yours now" and they didn't have to do it, they don't need your game, they liked your game and want you to be rewarded for making it. If this were not true, they would not buy it. Therefore a karmic reaction occurs inside of you where you received something positive for making something. This experience is important. It's different from "making money" or any other kind of work you can do.

When I was young I made a game for kids and a topic I knew was popular and there were no games for and I really needed some money. I wanted money. So I released a demo and then a full version for a very small price and I did it all in a couple months. I only made like $20 from it before a problem occurred and I had to relist it and make effectively a different game it's a long story

but I remember looked at the demographic data for downloads and realizing all over the world, dozens of little kids found my game and asked their parents to buy it (or just clicked buy who knows if they had any supervision). It changed me forever. It was a commercial flop and yet it's probably the peak of my life and everything good since then is because these kids bought my shitty game. They liked it.

I'll be honest. I hate the thread meme of "post progress". Movement without direction is not necessary progress. The vast majority of "progress" posts aren't actually progressing the poster towards their goals. For me it was having my friends over after school and we were going to play HOMM3 hotseat but we first played something called Gorillas that was like a tutorial or something for QBasic that my brothers and I had modified with bigger explosions. They were like
>O you make games seriously??
But I didn't make that one so I showed the silly mp games I had been making in The Games Factory (precursor to Clickteam Fusion), one of them was a vs Snake game with tank controls which made sure you could play it on the same keyboard without inputs seizing for either player and it was rare at the time that you had a snake game with 32 directions instead of 4. After about an 1h or so of playing competitive snake I asked if we should close it down and play HOMM3 instead and they said
>Why? This game is awesome
and they started talking strategies with each other and which of the powerups were their favorite. Maybe they didn't believe I had made it or they forgot but I realized that they genuinely liked it and not just because it was my game even put up against the god of vidya at the time.

not sure what kind of method would be cleaner for psx style. have you tried stencil brush painting?
>>
>>554991585
I would profit share far more than is common in the industry but only hire like-minded high performance people to a max of around 15-20 people on the higher end. At that point it's better to just sell the studio to some gullible billionaire and start over

One thing is for sure. I'm never hiring women. A friend hired some women for his marketing company, and they both got pregnant with 2 months of starting. They took 1.5 years off and he's legally not allowed to fire them. Fucking useless bitches.

>>554991585
Hire my brother as a programmer so I can just focus on the graphics & gameplay, and we'd both go move to somewhere that's not freezing half the year (in Canada)

Serious post: how many of us are actually Brahmin and not just shitposting? I am looking to start a game studio with fellow /agdg/ hiqh IQ Brahmin Northern-Indian devs. Perhaps allowing in Aryan europeans (non-British) if we need more numbers. Please reply soon, thank you.
>>
>>554993702
why did you post that instead of posting progress? don't you have any?
>>
>>554993925
Yes, I do have progress. I already have some funding to prove this is a serious idea but I am just looking for numbers right now, contact details will follow if there is enough interest.

I forgot to mention you must have a good understanding of Unreal Engine 5 and English that I will test during the interview stage.

I get pictures from google images and just paste them onto a 1024x1024 picture in gimp then posterise and dither the image.
It gives me outputs like this - I think they look pretty cool I am happy with them.
this texture is from the toucan receptionist lady.

and before:2020 so not AI.
>>
>>554994695
Most of them are only segments of images cut out with the windows snipping tool and as >>554994695 says I get chatgpt to generate me images to use sometimes too for example this is an image of a wren that I am going to use for the head of my next character -
>>
>>554995115
Would strongly recommend you change proportions and lines, and only using the values (posterizing) the image then feed the input back into chatgpt. As seen in >>554994889 they're focusing on symbols having the exact same geometric features.
>>
>>554995347
I only use it to generate images of animals faces with a perfect profile and front on image for the creation of textures for their heads everything else is usually just "purple fabric" or "green leather" etc etc in google or yandex images.

Warning: blogpost
Yesterday I finally started adding enemies to my game, but instead of wasting days fighting years old code from my previous game, I decided to do a clean rewrite. At first this seemed like a great decision because progress was quick and the code looked so neat and clean and efficient, but I soon started running into issues I vaguely remember wrestling with when I was making my previous game. So overall it was a good decision to do a clean slate rewrite, but like with everything that isn't a no-brainer, there are some significant trade-offs.
What's worrying is when I used to do code rewrites years ago I was often shaking my head at how shoddy my coding was. This time, there was little of that and a few instances of my past self being smarter than my present self.
I guess my brain is dying. Don't ever grow old.

All I'm saying is these types of things attract schizos like you wouldn't believe and saying "Chat-GPT made it" isn't enough. People are gonna zoom in on the reflection in the eyes and try to find a match in already existing images or the way the feathers sit and their coloring. People get fucking rabid about AI and I'm not sure why.
>>
>>554995115
I zoomed in on the eye and found the bus stop this was taken next to, I'm thinking I could stake it out and capture this wren(for research)

Kek this. Not a chance I am hiring a woman. Closest way I would do that is if she is contracted. The least available rights for her to screw me over with. But hiring her and making her an employee of my game development studio? Not a chance. I am not about to get sued becuase she felt "opressed" when I demanded she make the female characters have bigger boobs. Or have her run off and have a news article written to report that I refuse to allow her to make DEI characters additions to my game. It's my game, my studio. I am not letting my vision get trampled on by some woman getting offended. And believe you me do they get easily offended. Just look at Skull Girls for an example.

I'm not shit posting when I bitch about the algorithm. It really is fucking dogshit that pushes irrelevant crap on you and I can't believe anyone defends it. Its objectively worse than it was before. I found a lot of hidden gems in the past, no longer. Even from a gamers perspective its bad but from a developer's perspective its disastrous.
>>
>>554999701
I worked with a bunch of women in several companies and they were all very nice and didn't make any problems. In fact it was men who were troublemakers, from stealing company property to starting fights even though it was marketing and media agencies.
Maybe those companies were lucky, but maybe you're being psyoped and fed outliers to make you think women are worse employees.
The reason I wouldn't hire women is the same reason I wouldn't hire men. I can do mostly everything myself, and for things I can't do myself I've had good experiences with contractors.
>>
>>555000120
steam tags are dogshit
>>
>>555000120
all 9 of those have yellow in the capsule art. that's how the algorithm works now.
>>
>>555000863
>from a gamers perspective its bad but from a developer's perspective its disastrous
and from the Bank of Steam perspective you dont want the algorithm to promote any product that aren't already top earners, heavily reducing the relevant products to suggest.
