give me names ill investigate, this one is outrageous because hes literally copying FTL which is smart since the FTL devs said they moved on and wont make a sequel but also hes copying the 40k universe too, it feels like the game idea itself was given to him by AI, probably looking at games where people want a sequel and added in the warhammer stuff

You can probably find a bunch by browsing the latest releases. I don't mean highest grossing but literally everything that released today.
I would imagine any game with an undisclosed usage of AI that's still up probably doesn't have more than 500 reviews, but thanks to how gabencunt set up Steam, good luck finding every game that didn't reach 500 reviews from 2024 for example.

There is no line, morality is decided by popularity. If your game is popular it has cool references, if it's unpopular it's derivative. If your idea is unoriginal but popular it 'popularized' the idea, if it's unoriginal and unpopular it's slop. If a popular game steals ideas it's called borrowing and if it's unpopular it's called stealing.

Sometimes I see games with just outright terrible art and then.....several hundreds or even thousands of reviews. I think I know what kind of games I can make that get away with art that looks like a child drew it or get away with an artstyle that may be simple but still works for the type of game it is. However a lot of these games aren't exactly small <1 year development cycle games, maybe 2 years with the kind of content they have. It gets to the point that I may as well consider bigger games like 3-4 year dev cycles and just slap in low quality art because those at least end up in a weird spot of either being thousands of reviews or flopping hard and getting like 100-200 reviews. In fact 2 of them that go with very simple artstyles beat me to the punch on one specific idea I had, neither is done and one has clearly gotten into development hell.

Is this it? Is this how I simply settle with my terrible art skills by making games that can do well despite the art?

>>
>>554832145
Good. I need pc parts to drop in price. How am I supposed to even get a laptop to dev on? Especially since I eventually want to retry my hand multiplayer development. I got yet another GMI idea that relies on multiplayer (not a slop tier idea btw). It's the kind of multiplayer game I like but it will probably be a game that gets 5k reviews instead of 100k like slop can easily achieve. But 5k reviews is enough for me to throw in the towel on waging and go full time solodev or just hire a team and basically be like Kojima.
>>
My game just uses dice rolls for everything. Why think?
>>
>>554832215
you're circling around the issue like there's 2 axes but instead I'd recommend thinking of it in terms how many times you have to sell the game before someone plays it. That's to say if the game is one thing but it looks like another, that's really an unnecessary sell. When you have a unified vision that runs through the game where everything is just self evident and clicks from the start that's where you can "get away" with having on paper low quality assets or gameplay. A bad idea for example would be to make a ragegame/streamerslop that looked like a modern AAA title, by creating an assetflip you are helping people who look for that type of game to find it faster.

I'm confused, what do you mean by this part.

But yeah a unified vision makes sense a lot of the games I mentioned seem to have that just from looking at them. The art is very lackluster but it all just clicks for the kind of game it is supposed to be.

Work on your game NOW!
>>
>>554834047
Easy example
I make a RPG with a diverse cast
I put the gayest and blackest character I can think of as mascot of the game
90% of my characters are normal and what you would expect from an RPG
My game is now signalling that my RPG is gay and diverse
It can work in a similar fashion for artstyles, take Battle Brothers and Soulash 2, both have characters represented by a round head like a discord pfp. When I want to buy and start the game, the game must first try and sell me the idea that I'm not playing a head, I'm playing a character and it's worth going against my initial gut reaction
>>
>>554833542
You should be discouraged. You are literally making [existing game, but worse in every way], and you're never going to make it with that. Go to https://games-stats.com, find your most relevant tag(s), and go flip through the games around your targeted "make it" revenue. If you can't make a game of approximately that quality, then you're flat out NGMI.

I'm finally at the point with my game where I have a uniform approach to everything. I can quickly add new systems, entities, whatever into my game. All the wiring and scaffolding is there for everything so to speak. I even put extra time to make sure I can make most anything with the IDE without having to code anymore.

Now I'm kind of paralyzed because I don't know the first thing about HUDs, or UX elements, and beyond using free pixel sheets and making UI elements like boxes I don't really know anything about style or artwork. The one's at 6 figures that I can match stand out for one obvious reason or another. But I'm seeing a few of these get away with high prices compared to the art quality.

>The big AI companies lost the optics war so hard.
It doesn't really matter to them because the underlying tech is still used to control the world. They just made it available to the commoners as a pretext to pumping investment money by the trillions into it. Now that the tech has reached a certain level and they're sucked up so much hardware and perfect the database construction process they're more than happy to let people keep hating AI while it runs everything. If they didn't act concerned about these things it would kind of ruin the illusion of AI being a consumer product arising organically from publicly traded companies.

The investors are tech illiterate and don't care if GenAI succeeds or fails because they can just buy the debt off failed businesses to get back the Datacenters for cheap, then repackage them and use their "new" businesses as leverage for new loans to focus on AI applications like medicine and material science. They currently don't have to assume any of the risks while reaping all of the rewards.

Practically all of my normie coworkers went from loving AI to despising it within the span of a year once tech companies (mainly Microsoft) started forcing AI shit into everything against consumers’ will. Across the board it’s made using virtually any program significantly clunkier and slower despite promising the exact opposite. I can feel a sense of relief wash over me whenever I switch to an “archaic” program that hasn’t yet forced me to use an AI agent, because I know 50% of my time won’t be spent playing tug of war against said agent as it tries to steer me in whatever generalized “correct” direction it’s determined I must take.
Tech companies were way too heavy handed with how they approached this, but all they cared about was slapping an AI label on their products to increase share prices.

That’s the thing though, they’re not selling it. Then if the shareholders stop falling for that trick they start charging their customers for the AI shit they never asked for via a subscription model.

Grim. Apparently Nintendo's NES saved the console market by shutting out games not deemed fit. Sounds familiar to when PC gaming didn't just let you enter the few big ecosystems willy nilly and when grifter youtubers weren't selling people the gamedev high life dream when in reality its not all that great, Branno and Biteme unironically being closer to the reality of gamedev unlike those channels where the dev never even finishes a game or produces so few games that they get outcompeted by the slowest devs here. I mean come on Sasquatch B has that one crummy game. If we had a 7 day long game jam, Im sure most anons here could produce a small game better than that.

The crash and our ecosystem have nothing in common since they relied on physical copies of the games to distribute not to mention that any big year in gaming immediately followed a major recession. There's a pattern of minimum oversight, talented creators becoming available (from other industries) and people wanting to distract themselves from the failing economy. The exact same pattern repeats with movies and tv shows.

Yeah games back then were literally trash and ended up in the trash where they belong. Games in the 90s were incredible.

Saturation has been an issue the past decade or more, it's not as relevant if you make the right kind of game in certain genres. And even genres that do seem saturated because they have a dozen titles are still viable because people will buy and play anything in that genre.

In the 80s crash people did not collect huge libraries of games the way they do now.

Yeah, I wanted only black silhouettes and make every panel have a different images so no room looked the same, but, making a drawing for everything will be too time consuming, especially because I only need black non explicit silhouettes and I don't have too much time left for development. Thinking in a solution, I figured out that making a demon girl on koi, taking a transparent screenshot, then removing all saturation and brightness give me a nice black silhouette. Some anon mentioned if it can be animated and I guess he is right, I just have to take enough screenshots and code a script to animate the sprite renderer on Unity.

Having a note worthy composer attached to your game is a marketing tool in itself.
it's why so many horror games will get Akira Yamaoka to write a single track for their game so they can advertise their game with his name.
Hans Zimmer does something similar too.
I don't care how cancelled he is, I would ask Jeremy Soule for music if I was making an RPG.

You want to "make it" with an obscure genre because of your ego. e.g. "Farming sim" is actually an incredibly under-served genre, but you're never going to make one of those because you absolutely hate the idea of you telling your family and friends, "I made a farming sim and it made $10m" and they say, "oh so, you made a SDV clone?"

Your goal isn't to just make a good game and find success. Your goal is to come out of nowhere and wow the world with a completely unexpected success. You don't what to succeed using any tried and true formulas for success. Spoilers: that will never happen.

Not much has changed about PC gaming hardware since the 90s. We still use mouse, keyboard, and a 2d array of pixels. The only things we've improved on are VRAM and internet connection speeds. If you completely ignore any of the newer genres that this hardware allows, like MOBAs and battle royales, then yeah, nothing has changed. Movieslop is still the same movieslop it's always been.

Physically, humanity peaked at Korean Brood War players. AoE 3 and 4 flopped, and everyone is still playing AoE2 for that reason. We simply can't muster up more APM.

In the 2000s, we went through a phase where DSL got fast enough for us to move our AIM chats over to Varrock bank, the Origimmar bank roof, and the MS Free Market, but that wouldn't last. The rise of Discord was the final nail in the coffin for MMOs as a genre, because the game we really wanted to play all along was just Discord. The entire friendslop genre can be thought of as minigame DLCs to Discord.

>scale down the reference to see it's true shape

Surely I cannot be sued for this right???? This isn't the first time this happened, in fact the last time, I simply rotated an object I designed to get the shape I wanted. Lo and behold, the exact same angle and design of a game I was referencing, ironic as that means they likely did exactly what I did. Considering how I achieved it I refused to back off and kept the design. If I ever get sued, then I can prove I came upon it naturally and could do it from memory alone in a court room. But this one? How do I even avoid getting sued? The shape is nearly identical but easy to also draw from memory. Sure there are differences in color choices but it otherwise looks like a copy. I won't get sued right? It's not exactly a complex design.

Really? There is only a few pixels difference. Iirc the other game I was working on, it wasn't even just a few pixels difference in shape it was literally the exact same structural design. Though by the end I recall adjusting it slightly to better fit the design constraints I had for it while buffing out some stuff that felt off. I guess that's the difference between me and them. I get too obsessed about perfecting the design while they seemingly just decided it was good enough and went with it.

There's 3 scripts, one that fetches the past threads from 4chan, another that generates a database, and the final one makes an image from the database. The idea is you run all 3 every week to get an image for every week.

It's not really indie devs that worship Steam, it's gaymers. Vintage Story and Hytale devs both didn't want to release their games on Steam, with the VS dev citing Steam's refund policy as one of the reasons, and tons of gaymers had literal chimpouts over this.
Most indie devs just simply follow the money, because they don't have a big enough, loyal enough audience to overpower steam cultism.

I've looked into it, it's not easy. Random chances in success, some decent looking just flop, while others with terrible art are doing decent.
>but the median success is better!
Yes but the development time for such games is much longer too. Idk I don't like that mixed odds of success/failure. Despite this I have wanted to make a farming sim for a long time, it's just a very time consuming game to make. My current situation is not conducive for making such a game, maybe in a few years, probably never.

And for the console side probably just Nintendo. That's the only ecosystem where I can reasonably accept the large cut, it's closed off and stops the flood of slop from just pouring in. Resulting in good discoverability. Yeah that would feel nice, a game so good the crowd will come to me to play it.

NTA but I'm pretty sure that's what it says on their site when you set your cut, "You can only have it as 0% up to a certain point" but it seems they don't enforce that rule as much.

Maybe play the games first then decide whether to make it. As for the people "gobbling it up" they want something to tap on a screen while they watch a movie or something, what do you want. That's not the "gamer" demographic you would normally aim for but spergs like this can't comprehend that because it makes them feel superior to look down on anyone who is actually playing videogames (which they don't) >>554866926

>>
>>554877215
If a game grosses over 50 million dollars in revenue on Steam, their cut also gets lowered. Terraria and Stardew Valley both grossed over $100 IIRC, so their devs pay a smaller cut to Valve as well.

>>554877215
it's always worth pointing out that while having percentage changes at certain revenue levels is common on these stores, steam is the only one that A) isn't even based on revenue as far i can tell, just handshake deals with AAAs and B) is the only store where that percentage goes down instead of up.

I can work on my game again but now I don't know what to work on. The to-do list is huge. I suppose adding enemies would be important, although the game is fun without them too. So maybe I'll add a relaxed mode without enemies where you just do the thing and watch the numbers go up. Other more sensible devs would add it as an option with no downsides, but I'll want to restrict all the better stuff in the game to players who rise to the challenge.

aesthetic and perspective is reminiscent of ancient games - looks like boomer bait
isometric top-front perspective is less visually interesting than top-front-side - deliberate design choice, motive unclear
UI lifted straight outta Lords of the Realm 2 - again boomer bait
Every character looks the same - slop warning
It's a tower defense without a clear overview of your buildings/lanes - can't admire the aesthetics of your build
No clear visual hierarchy decided by shapes and color, likely made by a somewhat colorblind person

Honestly I saw the signs of them being incompetent early on when they made a big deal about going to the gym and how that leads to "gains in game dev".
No one who starts a business has time for gym bro, they spend the first 3 months doing 10-12 hours every day, overtime, whatever they need until they get a steady income coming. Self-care and gym is something you do when money starts flowing in, or when you don't own the business and you're just a regular employee. That's really the crust of their problem really, I feel like they approached game dev as if they were normal employees to someone else's company and not CEOs trying to start something off the ground from 0. They were too relaxed. (I'm not saying gym is bad, and you should still go assuming you're on a years-long project, but their approach is to make rapid-fire releases, they should've focused on that.)

Hell, Marnix was taking regular trips to fucking Japan years ago, and now he moved there. Why the hell would you do that when you're trying to get a business going? These guys just want a rockstar lifestyle.

100% and that's because they even admit they're coasting on money from youtube and other things besides making games. They are larping really hard to the point that they are just now looking around and realizing (out loud to youtube because it makes them money) that they're not making games. They aren't being game developers.

Yeah I imagine this affects them a lot, like they never actually feel the "urgency" to make a game that actually earns them money. They have the safety net of "whether the game flops or not we still get youtube money along the way so whatever".

I'm going to ask a very genuine question and I'm sorry if some schizo's get mad but I feel like it's a good discussion topic.

There's been a lot of controversy about /v/3 wanting to supposedly distance themselves from 4chan connections (or at least in a way that doesn't immediately turn away people) but we've also had a fair share of devs here that stop associating with /agdg/ and 4chan as a whole due to publisher deals or whatnot.

What is it about this place that keeps people from wanting to ever acknowledge they got their start here? I understand the neogina spammer and the off topic drama are a deterrent but it feels like /agdg/ has become this place that no one wants to credit for their beginnings and it baffles me when I hear devs say "I don't want the 4chan connection" because unfortunately by posting here, you have a connection. Simple as. The Internet is forever.

So realistically, why are publishers so scared of 4chan, or is it a bunch of devs projecting when in reality it's not as harmful as you think. Saying "yeah I've posted my game on 4chan" is no different than posting it on a subr*ddit. Both sites have their tame sections and some more unsightly sections so realistically what's the difference?

You have to learn systems level thinking and know enough that you have a reasonable idea how to untangle yourself out of your own problems and then be able to set up a pipeline/workflow. Otherwise you will be stuck in one environment forever and be unable to cooperate with anyone else, perhaps more importantly you won't get into the mindset of optimizing your output. I've worked 11 hours a day before. You don't do 11 hours non-stop of code of course, but you still do stuff that's work-adjacent instead of relaxing or personal hobbies.
>>
>>554897649
>not working an unrealistic and unproductive amount of time

Besides, they released 3 games last year. The games flopped but that's a different matter.

youre fucking retarded if you do this shit regularly
if i have to work more than 8 hours on a particular day im taking those hours back some other day and leaving early

So around 3-4 hours of productive work?
>>
>>554897965
>they released 3 games last year
Those games were made in 2024 though right. So 2025 was basically a disaster.

For someone else? Sure. But it's your own company we're talking about here. Gotta break some eggs if you want your omelette.
>>554898186
Yes, get those 3-4 hours out of your system in the morning and then spend the day doing low cognitive work such as filling out spreadsheets and timetables, which don't feel very productive but are still very necessary if you're building a company.
>>
Just think what position biteme would be in without their youtube channel. Their games would have 3 reviews. You could say the same for most youtube gamedevs obviously but that's not the point, they should be striving to make at least one game a year that is legitimately standalone quality. Instead they pipedream and cancel 8 games?
>>
>>554898580
I don't know where you got this notion that
>filling out spreadsheets and timetables
>responding to emails, making plans
is something that a gamedev would be doing on a daily basis for hours. I have a company and the only time I use spreadsheets is for logging income and expenses which is like 5 minutes a day and includes personal expenses like groceries. The only thing that could take hours a day is marketing but even that, once you set up your accounts, is making a few posts a week and engaging with people which is also a couple of hours a week at most. I've ran advertising campaigns and even that doesn't take more than an hour a week (money is the bottleneck there).
Now once one of your games makes it and you hire people and start getting offers from publishers, that's different but until then there's little to do but work directly on your game and you're not doing that for 10-12 hours a day, not producitvely.
>>
>>554887027
Thanks but the :: Whatever :: part has to be the first part of the post... I made it that way so it doesn't confuse posts that mention the format with an actual progress post. I'm not sure... I could reverse that.

>What's your plan to improve

My goal is definitely not to improve or make anything professional. Its going to be a slap up of genre's i like and go up for free on f95 zone.

In this case im mixing my love for spread sheet simulators and shit x games on f95 zone.

I'm considering making this a scripted game and not a sandbox. Each level would be progressively bigger/more planets with pre generated enemy nations. If your nation prevails and conquers the capitols you get lewd scenes and you get to either recruit or enslave enemy commanders. Then the story progresses between the missions.

Nice, it's kind of open season in that genre of games especially if it has multiplayer as long as it has similar levels of customization.

It's like shouldn't you be trying to fix this issue where you don't have any modelers and don't know how to model anything? How many games did they 'cancel' for this reason? No interest in solving the issue at all. It's all fake.

Not my problem that you gave up.
Not my problem that you are depressed.
Not my problem that you have shit beliefs.
Not my problem that you believe in things that don't work.
Not my problem that you hate truth and prefer to be a stubborn idiot.
Not my problem that you constantly shoot yourself in the foot.
Not my problem that you don't have the capability to learn from mistakes.
Not my problem if you feel extremely bad because of all those things.

Thank you for your attention.

Lock out.
And then study dopamine management and time management. Then lock in. Then when you feel like taking a break, lock out again. Stop being 24/7 in the "I need to make it" mindset and you will have more "I'm gonna make it" moments which are what keep you above water.

The lack of an artist killed their most promising project.
It just baffles me.

somehow the longer i work on my project the more time pressure i feel. i don't know what's the psychological mechanism behind this.
i also notice this when playing management games, that at first i'm just chill but the longer i play, the more time-efficient i want to become, until it stresses me out to a degree i can't handle anymore.

i start to think of waging as some superior force that forces you to fit in to make money and survive, otherwise you die. but it's one thing to rant about it and do it because you have to, and another thing to intentionally want to fit in because you think it'll fix your life.
if someone forces me to eat shit to survive and he's just too strong for me, i have to do it.
but trying to make myself love eating shit in order to have an easier time eating shit is just fucked in the head.

if there's some kind of afterlife, especially one where you exist in eternal bliss next to god, then what does it matter what you achieve in life? even the greatest of human achievements would be petty and irrelevant so I imagine my ancestors wouldn't care if I were a fantastically successful game developer or stocking shelves at walmart, both lives would be identical from the viewpoint of eternal bliss
