Good morning AGDG.
I hope I finally fixed the Issues with referencing the wrong Brushplane when reconstructing UV Coordinates, aswell as the overlapping Polygon Issues I had. Which wasn't an Issue with the Code itself, but a Level Design Fault. Wasted most of Yesterday on not recognizing that.
Almost, all UV Coords are still flipped in Y, but that isn't really an Issue as long as its consistent, I can just flip everything at the End.
I should get a second Monitor again I think, I foresee it getting even more cluttered when I actually make Levels.
What Progress have you been up to over the Weekend so far?

>>555101267
I mainly use C++ like C with Classes for organization, I barely use any C++ Features, I write with a very limited instruction set generally.
That being said, I don't think there's anything wrong with using any Features the Language provides, including constexpr, if you have a proper use case for it. Generally I think it's fine to get as much as you can out of performance critical Code and into predetermination(?), so either when starting or loading Stuff, or even better if you can get it into the compilation Time, so constexpr would be nice there. I really prefer it if I have to wait 1h to compile a Thing, but have it run fluently, then having it stutter constantly or waste Ressources, but compile quickly.
But especially Compiler instructions are heavily dependant on the compiler Flags and the Compiler you're using, so you should be careful with them, and make sure they actually do what they're supposed to do. I don't think it's an Issue with any actually decent Compiler like Clang, MSVC or G++, but I had the unfortunate Option/Requirement to use horribly bad Compilers at work, which if you're lucky have #define's.
>tl;dr:
I don't use them, but I have nothing against them.

f95 Dominion Visual Novel clone day 10?

Backend done, everything from tiles to items are modeled and loaded. Its no longer a sandbox. Every mission will have a set amount of worlds with some pre placed enemy commander AI's that expand and powerful neutral enemies to conquer for bonus scenes / items. I think within a week it should be playable against brain dead enemies.

Between missions your pretender commander will keep special items and be able to enslave some powerful lady enemies as commanders. This will make it easier to trigger scenes and create a story direction.

I think to limit art there will be 3 gods to choose from, that way i only have to recreate a scene 3 times.

I have story beats written and toyed with some tester art using wan, i had to crop it down 50% so it looks worse than it is, office hot.

Wow. You all realize this means the popularity of Roblox Dragon Ball games will skyrocket again right? As kids who never saw Dragon Ball Super (it ended 8 years ago) become fans. The time to make a Dragon Ball Roblox game is now, in preparation for a huge popularity spike where you will have next to no competitors yet, and make tons of money.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esskQtMRvK0
>>
>>555106170
Because at this time, Roblox Dragon Ball games are dead. There is only one that has about 3000 players. Another has 1000 players. Another has 500 players. And all the others are 200 or less. If this was 5-10 years ago they'd be at 50,000 players

I guess becomes game development exponentially takes more time as the game grows, since you have to make the game with what you've already made in mind, and then some more
Scope creep is also a thing.
Also most developers are just lazy, or don't have time and work actual jobs that take up their time.
Sometimes you see the odd game that is developed rapidly but is still good quality. It means alot of things are aligning for that developer.

Adding enemies to my game is going slow. It's using three coordinate systems, one for physics, one for sprites, one for UI and it's a mess but it's too late to fix now. At least now I have enemies spawning where I want them. Now they just need to start acting like enemies. Raycast to player, if in LoS then shoot with appropriate leading. How hard can it be?

weekend progress, boring edition
tldr: wall cutout shader

not tldr:
the system i used for 'monvo was too flimsy and had a bunch of edge cases i discovered as i devved, but i didn't want to redo things forever so i just shipped with it. i copied those files over to this project and ended up scrapping a solid 90% of it (but i kept the shader)
this new system uses wallgroups which i manually assign, which is basically saying that if wall X is obscuring the player, wall X+1 should also fade. it works but id like it to be automated since i dont want to assign a billion walls manually for every level.

i'll clean it up over time. next week i'll try to start basic controller support and basic multiplayer
>>
>>555113491
Yeah in a way. There's some arcade games that are out there that are deceptively simple but are hard as balls. I'll admit I do get somewhat filtered on Galaga '88 on my 1up machine. Especially with it's weird ass mechanics about moving through dimensions and whatnot. Still fun though.
>>
>>555113538
Are you going to apply the shader to enemies too so you can see what you're shooting? Seems like just drawing the whole wall transparent or removing it after they walk through the door would be the simpler option.

i didnt think about it. i think that's stuff to consider once i get there. if the screen ends up too crowded i'll try it, but if visibility is fine then there's no need
> Seems like just drawing the whole wall transparent or removing it after they walk through the door would be the simpler option.
my thoughts are that if i have two rooms, one north of another, with a wall that divides them, the player might not 'see' the wall if its fully transparent, and they'll want to walk through it.
iirc diablo2 solved these issues by leaving the base of the wall fully opaque. i could try that and see how it goes.
but that's for later, i'll model a dude now

they do look wonky but i dont think it's very noticeable at the camera distance.

i'm still learning and having a lot of fun modeling. as soon as i get to the texture part i want to die and just offload it to friends of mine who have nothing better to do. learning how to properly texture is something i should get around to one day.

good question.

The answer is games are 4D structures.

Imagine how long it takes you to draw a picture of a house.
Now imagine how long it takes you to make a 3d miniature of the house complete with plumbing and electrical.

Now imagine how long it takes you to do that but now you have to program the family living inside of it and each of their life goals and aspirations and Timmy wakes up at 7:00AM to go to school and only eats cheerios and Jane likes to talk on the phone for 3 hours every night which is cranking up the phone bill which dad does not like.

Each dimension exponentially increases the amount of work done. If you've ever made a rubber band ball, you might notice that you can make a small one very fast. But going from 2 inches to 4 inches radius takes much longer.
>>
>>555107930
80/20 rule, the last 20% of the work takes 80% of the time. Instead of dooming you should do what everyone else does and release it on Early Access so you can ship a product that only takes 20% as long to develop as the actual game then spend the remaining 5 years making the last 20%
>>
Fallout New Vegas was made in 18 months.

And it shows. It's a buggy, unstable shitty game with a giant open world that has no way of accelerated traversal through it like cars, making it an utterly miserable experience.
Half-Life 1 is a much better example of a game being made in a short time.

I played FNV on release and I didn't find any bugs that detracted from the experience. What I didn't like about it was the shoehorned cowboy theme.
Same with other famously buggy games like KOTOR2 and Mass Effect Andromeda. If you ignore what other players report and just play the game, you won't find many bugs or at least I don't.

yeah but content is what eats up most of development time in RPGs. 18 months was pretty short.

"It works on my machine" is not a valid argument or defence. You should know this, ESPECIALLY if you are, or have aspirations to be a game developer. The game still has some problems running on modern hardware as well.
Anyway, technical problems weren't my only issue with it. I already mentioned the game having a big open world with no accelerated travel options like cars. I wasn't able to get into that game because the traversal was so boring and exhausting. I don't know if there are any other problems with the gameplay structure or the narrative though.

>"It works on my machine" is not a valid argument or defence
I think the bugginess was mostly a meme. The game was buggier than expected but then the content farmers ran with it and blew it out of proportion like the antenna issue with the iPhone 4 that came out about the same time. A few people had problems and they were loud about it and a nothingburger became a meme.

I bring it up because you (or maybe some other anon but that isn't relevant) brought it up as an example of it being made in "just" 18 months.
It might seem impressive that they cranked out a content heavy RPG in 18 months, until you realise that they traded in content for polish and lack of bugs and issues and also what >>555119693
said. It wasn't an entire game made completely from scratch. They were building off another game, essentially making a mod.

>option A
server runs the gamestate, clients send inputs and the server streams the gamestate updates to the client.
>option B
run each gamestate locally sending inputs between clients, when clients have delayed inputs or checksum diff return to a tick where they did match
>option BA
once matched keep it as is (lockstep)
>option BC
once matched server iterates towards a future gamestate (where rollback was initiated) by simulating game loops but input each client's input every update then synchronize each client to that gamestate (rollback)
>option C
Server runs the gamestate as the authoritative gamestate, clients may run a local simulation. Server never stops running despite potentially receiving mismatched inputs and state deltas and is mostly concerned with positional data. Client interpolates this streamed data below a certain threshold but past it the client hard-corrects the gamestate and it snaps into place. (rubberbanding)
>>
>>555129965
you see the problem is that I'm doing "Dark Souls" style co-op
you join another game while playing in your own "world"
for example at its simplest level: I have collected coin 1 and 3 in my game and I join another players game (he has not colleted coin 1 and 3), so now my machine needs to get that data from the other player, and in a sense "patch" the game state on my screen

so I must desigen everything that can have more than 1 static state, to be able to load itself into another state
>>
Hey quick question, when your father beats the living shit out of your mother, do you go to the bathroom or your bedroom?
>>
>>555130498
All you have to do is make the client keep the snapshot of his gamestate when he's joining the host (Dark Souls is Option C btw), when he's done in the host's world he simply returns to his own snapshot
>>
>>555130757
father?
>>
>>555130838
right, I need a local save, that I can return to (assuming you "can" return to your own game)
>>
>>555130974
Yeah that's why the Host is the only one that is able to continue from their position. When a client leaves the host in Dark Souls they're teleported and put in a loading screen essentially loading the game again from the position they were summoned in
>>
>>555130757
Bedroom
>>
>>555131074
does it make sense to completely reinstantiate the game world, and "loading" it with the Hosts save, or just "reload" the states of individual pieces (colletables, enemies, etc.)
>>
>>555131217
If your goal is to be able to continue on from where you stopped co-oping with the progress you both made together it would make sense to update the progress and kills for each enemy (assuming they're fixed spawns with fixed IDs) and either fast-load a snapshot killing all the enemies etc for a shorter loading screen.
But practically I think this would lead to a lot of skipping and potentially softlocking progress depending on how it's designed.
>>
>>555126504
what kind of game states? like bringing over npc enemies to their session?
>>
>>555131557
>If your goal is to be able to continue on from where you stopped co-oping with the progress you both made together it would make sense to update the progress
No I don't think that will be the case. If you leave the host's game you go back to your own game save, like Dark Souls.
It's like this because the mechanic of joining a game is like Dark Souls, there's no "create game/join game" button in a menu, it's an "item/mechanic" in game you must acquire and use.

>>555131731
Well yes, assume there is collectables, enemies, perhaps closed/opened doors and bridges (non-static world elements essentially), that might be different from your game, and the host's game.
>>
>>555132073
okay then it's straightforward, just load in to your clientside snapshot again (reinstatiating)
>>
>>555132073
i think most games just use the host save game state, sharing states like that is not something i've heard of

>Multiple threads
Sure they may get only a few replies but the goal isn't to have this 500+ reply thread. It's literally just sharing the information. Part of the reason (that I've seen at least) why there's no real replies is that, truthfully, there's nothing for anons to reply to. I mean realistically are we going to spend an entire thread talking about the modifiers and how to implement them? No not at all. There's not a lot of discussion points admittedly but the word has to still be out there. Hell, even look at the current /v/GA voting threads that are being propped up hard by the staff posting old award webms and game lists. Interaction doesn't only happen through threads.

No that's 100% fair. I have no clue how to do the thumbnail thing properly. It's just doing the first frame as whatever the eyecatcher is supposed to be correct? I can fix that. Plus I have no clue why it's capping at 35seconds when the video file is 1:35. Weird.

There is nothing more illuminating about game dev then actually finishing a game.

:: Hirdrih Technologic ::
progress :: Worked on moving platforms and ended up using a new method (Again from PaperMouseGames) where now moving platforms can have custom paths, sprites and looping, so they're much more flexible compared to how I did them in Nortubel.
Also pick up animations for items but no actual effect from them yet.
Random fact: The verticle platform has a design already existing in Nortubel but the horizontal one's is kinda new, because Hirdrih levels in Nortubel had no horizontal platforms.

Ok so let's say a game makes 200k.

First Steam takes it's tax so it's down to 140k
Then my government takes the tax so it's down to like 80k.
So already if the team >1 we're fucked and barely made rent.
And to top it off we gotta pay 3k to Unity.

And then some retard who made an asset flip memegame made 5 million on luck alone.

Why would anyone be a gamedev?
>>
>>555140220

your question is too vague.
what you should do is print a console message for every step in whatever process you're investigating and then run it and read how it flows. you should know where it should end and why/why not, so just print a console message there telling you why it didn't end the attack.

It's a relaxing little grindy game no combat. Very simple. Could it have been made for free on Itch.io? Maybe, but it's worth more than that, it's worth a few dollars, and so the dev made $20k in sales (as of time of the article, probably more by now).

I especially enjoy thinking about how it was made in a matter of months and wondering, could I do something similar to this quality in that amount of time?

This might sound like an utterly retarded question since I've never actually implemented a state machine but here goes.

If I were to make a state machine for a combat system, can it get "complex" enough that it's not worth trying to implement? Like say there are states for walking, running, sliding, jumping, falling, attacks... If they all end up connecting with one another, would it be too messy to be a reasonable, modular solution? Or is it something that's always worth going for?

>Hot take: the biggest constraint on indie developers isn’t “visibility” it’s “interest.” The most common question I hear is, “how do I get more visibility on my game?” But my theory is that games get plenty of visibility, it is just that the majority of game shoppers and content creators saw the game and went “eh… maybe…seems ok… I guess.”

I know theres a ton of bugs and things to improve but im curious about the honest feedback without me setting anyone up, does it look fun for 1m if you could just play it on the web?

There are a lot of videos of guys asking like 100 girls and it's just a numbers game man. Your priority should be overcoming that fear of rejection as soon as possible because it will hurt you in the long term, not just with girls, with anything in life. Some of it may just fade away as you get older or you get an ephiphany some day. You won't stay young, good health isn't a guarantee, life is fleeting, if you mess up and you're afraid of some girl just say no problem and you acknowledge that you were awkward if you were. You're making things up in your head that aren't there. Just do the thing you're afraid of ONCE, once becomes twice and so on.

those 100 pick up videos are retarded
of course women will accept ur shitty pick up lines if you point a camera at them and say its for a video
i bet out of the 20/100 response rate they get in those videos it only escalates to literally anything (even a convo outside that one moment) at like a 1:10 rate and even less for dates
if you just try to treat romance like a game that way itll just be ass, also not everyone (especially some autist retards that would be posting here) would be interested in just sexing around with no relationships which is what that attitude brings you past the mental fantasy of it all

nice game, looks a lot more polished than mine but i can tell its not 100% what im aiming for
gameplay for mine is going to be a bit like diablo looter twin stick shooter for the palaces (like how u grind for boss / dungeon keys in those games to do the dungeon crawling), the social aspect is just going to be sort of like persona but boiled down to bare minimum idle game mechanics where you just talk to people to reveal their "corruption" to unlock new palaces. as a stretch goal id like to have a main character that has a non procedurally generated palace but that might be a bit too ambitious..
the progression is just going to be looter / fashion game, but you gear up for combat with magical girl costumes and for the social parts you wear more casual clothes that influence your stats there. 4* outfit drops have variants for either casual or mega (on an item by item basis) and 5* drops have variants for both, and only those two rarities have special effects associated with either mode. obviously want to make a separate visual toggle for fashion v stats
for the gameplay i want to have a little bit of thinking behind the two modes with civilian mode being sort of like "bait" for enemies who arent aware but it alerts nearby rooms, and mega is metered and alerts a further radius but is mega powerful

I wanted to do a story focused RPG but realised I don't have the skill or manpower (working solo) to pull that off, especially since I want to make a game primarily as a medium for my music so I'd prefer to do shorter games since I compose all the time.
I thought that making a short 'lower-effort' game like a shmup would be a good way to go about this but realised that I wouldn't be able to write as much as I like, keeping it to pre-boss dialogue. So I thought about maybe making a written story with illustrations to go along with the game to expand on everything, but I think the player should have to go out of their way to read something. Would anyone even read it?
It seems like the best solution but I'm not entirely happy though because I wanted to make character hangouts like Persona, there's something special about the way story is presented in story-focused games as a combination of the graphics, music and dialogue and if I do a fast-paced game I'll miss out on making slower themes like town themes or music for quieter/sentimental story moments. Making a classic mostly-story game in RPG Maker like Corpse Party might actually work better, but I also want to make fast battle/stage themes that wouldn't otherwise fit and have some cool fights. I don't know what to do, feels like there's no way to win.

Touhou is my biggest inspiration so you're not far off. But the Touhou manga mostly focuses on original stories rather than the stories of the actual games and a lot of the game characters never get expanded upon, nor do I have the ability to make a whole manga. I would just make a written version of the story and expand on what I couldn't put in the game with a few drawing here and there.
>Post your music and let's see if you're even half as good.
well now im a bit scared to because it's not even a quarter as good as ZUN's stuff
>>
>>555170786
Oh, so it wasn't Cris.
The vast majority of Touhou lore comes from an encyclopedia: https://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Perfect_Memento_in_Strict_Sense
Every game also shipped with text detailing character biographies and explaining the plot in prose to supplement the in-game dialogue.
Post your music. It can't be worse than Cris's, can it?

Cris, I promise you, I'll take that track and make it sound better, it's not a total disaster but I don't understand why you're not keeping standard rhythm and always slide around with unnecessary notes adding that extra schizo touch.

True. I just feel like it would be a bit of a shame to omit that from the actual game. I liked the visual and musical element of storytelling in games, even if it was something small like a seeing a character's expression or a certain piece of music playing during a story moment that I wouldn't be able to do if I did things this way.

Been two days trying to vibe code using gemini a basic game engine/mini game using SDL and rust, which is like really cool, because I'm now understanding why godot and unity has shit like _ready, _update.

I'm basically rewriting basic shit like an scene manager, a character manager.

Which is like unity and godot has this by default, but it feels good to actually craft that shit from scratch.

Also, making an engine doesn't seem now so dificult, because you can write a basic mini engine loop in like 2-3 days.

Actually doing low level shit, gives me more satisfaction than using godot.

Yeah, it's alright. It's not bad, but not great either. You're relying too much on embellishments, and it's quite short. Practice composing and arranging longer pieces. Mix in some sentence form parts, as too many too many periods back to back gets stale really fast.

IMO, ornaments/embellishments should be more for emphasis. When you try to emphasize everything, nothing is emphasized. Good pieces need contrast and moments that stand out from the rest.

All parts of the song you posted are period form: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Period_(music)
This is sentence form: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sentence_(music) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucNWbawSiZM
You should use both. e.g. Most pop/rock songs do something like sentences for the verse and periods for the chorus.

Trying to vibe code in rust a basic mini game engine in two days, has really really taught me a lot of why game engines do things, like signals and input managers and have scene graphs.

But at the same I am really really happy for trying to do this, because I've learned a shit ton about game engines by trying to vibe code one.

I also figured out some neat vibe coding tricks, like the fact I need to ask rewrite this script by giving the actual script so the LLM preserve a lot of the code, and also like separate everything in modules, but also I wanna try to separate even functions in separate files, so the LLM doesn't rewrite what works.

So far I am improving in my vibe coding skills, lmao.
So that's good.

Isn't any AI disclaimer a hype-killer for any game? And Steam can detect AI coding?
>>
>>555200643
Valve no longer asks if you used AI code or used AI for concepts and shit. Their new disclosure is very narrow in scope, specifically art/text/sound assets. However if you modify an art asset is it still AI? Who knows. Before valve considered any use of AI worthy of disclosing, including concept art, but now its not as clear. If I generate a sculpt then clean it up and retopologize was it "made" with AI? Probably not in valve's eyes.
>>
>>555201114
Their new disclosure is retarded. It says you only need to disclose things that are "consumed" by the player. Is the game's code, the fucking code that makes up the actual gameplay, /not/ consumed by the player? What does consume even mean then?
>>

>>
>>555201723
They just changed the guidelines a week ago, look into it. You can use AI now with no disclosure. You only have to disclose if you ship with raw AI generated assets.
AI concept art and code is 100% kosher now.

I don't know how to feel about this. As a dev this hides all the cheating (unless someone digs deep in the game code and your reputation is forever fucked). But as a player I really wish the coding is all organic.
>>
>>555202082
Personally I don't mind if real programmers use an AI for assisting with code but I do want to know when a game was "vibe coded".
I'd never buy a game entire written by AI because that's a guarantee that if there's bugs the developer can't ever fix them.
Basically impossible to enforce that though sadly.

I couldn't tell you what animal Amy Rose even is. Only an autistic furry would even know. It would be surprising (and not shocking unless you added genitalia) only because every feature of her is defined by clothing design, otherwise she's just a pink Sonic, a random collection of simple geometric shapes that look nothing like the supposed animal they're based on.

alright I'ma just come out n say it summa y'all niggas gay lookin up amy rose n sheet

if you're used to seeing someone in clothing it's gonna be pretty odd to see them naked. i mentioned amy because there i saw a reddit thread about making her naked a bit ago, the consensus was that it looked strange. the fact that she doesn't distinctly look like an animal is kind of the point. you aren't looking at her going "that's a hedgehog, of course it's not wearing clothes, the needles would tear through the fabric".

I think the big head skeleton looks much less goofy than a skeleton that looks like it's from a different game. To me it just looks like a cartoony skeleton for a cartoony game.

left looks better but will get drawn and quartered, right looks like a stylistic choice

TIL Touhou 1 was a game about bouncing a ball around. ZUN literally started with Pong, and that is why he made it. @Cris take notes.
