You can trick people with ai, but if you use it in you're game and don't disclose it, then you have to keep up the lie forever.
Not only for your reputation, but also because if you're caught, then Steam users can then refund off of false advertising.

I'm still adding enemies. In 2 days I got them to spawn at terrain level and notice when a target is in range. Today I'll make it so they know if a target is in the line of sight and decide when and where to shoot. Actual bullets will probably wait until tomorrow.

>To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Toon Souls. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Toon Souls nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into their characterisation - their personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Toon Souls truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Toon Souls puzzle levels which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools... how I pity them. And yes by the way, I DO have a Toon Souls tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand

really depends on content scope and how hard you lean into existing tooling like rpgmaker. something along the lines of the coffin of andy and leyley or undertale can probably be shat out in a few months.
>>
>>555220106
Undertale took years to make I think. There was definitely a Kickstarter. The combat system basically being a bullet hell instead of a traditional RPG's probably helped shave down time.

Next week starts the game jam! And we want (you) to get in on some of the fun!
>But how
Hold on I'm getting there. What makes this jam unique is that we're letting the whole board vote on some requirements for the games being made. Starting tomorrow through Thursday you'll vote each day on 3 different mechanics that have the potential to be required for the participants. The ones in circulation are:
>educational content
>All in game text must rhyme
>Loot boxes
>Mouth made SFX
>Betting
>Big titty shopkeeper
>QTE
>Magic meter (or equivalent)
>Perma death
So you have the chance to really fuck over some people or throw them a bone and vote on a good one. It's up to you. The Jam games will be made starting Feb 1st and running to the 7th. On the 7th, we'll be hosting a special Livestream where we play through the submissions and rank them. Whoever wins the community and judge ranking wins $100 in either steam credit or just sent to them. Their choice.

>what exactly is vibecoding

The original definition is that its when you turn your brain off and write 100% of your code through AI prompts and you "go with the vibes".

I spend a fuck ton of time programming, both for my hobbies and my job, and I only do 100% vibe coding when the thing I'm working on is meant to be thrown away, i.e. a script to check something or a PoC for a feature.

AI assisted tools are great, but unless you're making pong, games are in the complexity class where a human has to get involved at some point, and there vibe coding will bite you in the ass hard.

>another type of game if I want to write 20 hours of bullshit with some fights here or there
20 hours of story is more work than you think. if this is your first game I'd scope down to 5 hours, or maybe even less. no hard feelings, just experience.

>well can you recommend another type of game for me to try and make if i want to write 20 hours of bullshit with some fights here and there
People typically read at 200-300 words per minute, a 20-hour book is roughly 240,000-360,000 words. writing that much would take years unless you are doing it full time.
while your ambition may be to work on an rpg for a few years and release it, that almost never happens for first timers, they don't know how to scope a game and end up in a death loop of trying to make it better to justify how long it's taken, and it never ends. pick a timeframe, release something by then. an easy genre with writing could be an escape room with a bunch of notes scattered about and a radio or voice that gives clues.

to keep the scope down, use rpgmaker, but set whole the game inside a house. like Look Outside, except "don't look under the bed" or something. "don't open the bedroom closet at night"
during the day read emails and order supplies. at night monsters in the closet are there to fight in turnbased battles. over the course of the game via the emails you learn more about the story.

Anon not even the gabencunt cube will be affordable because of the RAM shortages. They affected EVERYTHING. Consider this potential scenario:
In 10 years, why would the average zoomeroid pay $3500 for a steam shitcube where you have to also buy every game to play on, when he can just buy a $700 shitass 4GB ram phone which will be good enough to watch tiktok slop and youtube slop, both of which are free?
More sophisticated users will probably move on to literature and cinema.
We'll be lucky if even a third of the total non-mobile gaming market remains by that point.

Nobody knows what "fascist" even means because people now associate politics with autistic internet arguments and memes.
>>555217696
Why did he pick a game concept that's a literal Dorkly/CollegeHumor gag is beyond me.
It's like making a GTA clone with Mario knock off characters and selling it on the idea of a joke that's been told a million times.
Or yet: More like making a game inspired by the Isabelle/Doomguy meme where you have these intentionally clashing characters and they look so generic and boring because they're just parodies of other stuff and don't even try to get the "feel" of either series.
(And combine that with only knowing said characters through memes, since "meme culture" is what's driving the concept anyway).
Also people forgot CupHead was made by guys that grew up watching old cartoons, made most of the lineart traditional and literally had to sell their house to keep up with the game's budget.
CH was trying to mimic a long gone era of animation, this game is trying to mimic CH while also parodying Dark Souls (Also misunderstood, this is why the Demon Souls remake even spawned a discussion of "West vs East" in terms of fantasy designs).

>Question: When does video game development take too long?
>Why is it possible to prototype an attractive, almost complete game in a Jam, but when it comes to making the final game, it takes years?
There's a couple factors:
- A game that does well in a game jam isn't necessary something people would pay money for. Game developers might like it and give it positive reviews, but I remember maybe one or two jam games I kept coming back to over and over again, or left a strong impression of story, which I thought "I would pay for this". Most developers know this, and once the question of "would someone random pay money for this?" comes into the picture, they know they have to have a massive restructuring OR increase the quality by two magnitudes which means more art, less bugs, more content, and this increases work exponentially.
- In a game jam, you can take all sorts of short-cuts that make things easier like spaghetti coding, placeholder assets, even omitting sfx(don't do this, get one of the free GDC yearly sfx drops). This isn't something most people figure out, but starting over from scratch is often times the CORRECT decision and many successful devs will do this many times over. It doesn't work for everyone though, some people work more "linearly" and can cope better, but it's never all one-way or the other.
- Many game jams are made in generalized engines(Unreal, Unity, Godot, etc.) and all of these products are great at the start, but once you try to FINISH a game you see all the cracks like broken occlusion culling, the lack of any level editor, corruption on large projects, and many other annoying bugs that you either have to modify the engine to fix or hope and pray that Juan stops catering to game jam devs and Epic stops devving for Fortnite for five seconds so they can fix the stuff that affects developers who finish games.

tl;dr: Game Devs are poor judges of what sells, complexity scales for larger projects, devs start over, and engines suck

does it feel like 5m of fun to play the game right now from the gif?

The value on the picture alone is what the game sold 50 days after release. And this was written at that time: https://a327ex.com/posts/snkrx_log. Just that alone is wildly higher than the gross revenue the website is saying my game has. You can imagine how it grew over time, especially since it came before Vampire Survivors and the success of that game made way more people buy SNKRX over the years than they would otherwise have, yes?

Did you know that there is a common problem of steamies not finishing the games they buy? It's not just a problem for indies, literally every single game is like this. You don't even need the proper Steam analytics, you can just look at every game that has achievements on Steam. Most "game completed" achievements on Steam have less than 30% completion rate. And none above 50%.
Half of your potential userbase will never see the ending of your game (if it has it).
It's why it's such a good idea to make roguelike slop/friendslop. If steamies won't bother to finish your game, you don't have to either.
>>
>>555240684
Don't you have to pay for servers if your game is multiplayer? I can't afford that.
>>
>>555240927
You can settle for singleplayer roguelike slop like Vampire Survivors or Megabonk. As long as it has enough flashing colours and numbers and MUH CHEEVOS, steamies will be happy.
>>
>>555240684
20% of those who bought my game didn't play it even once because the total number of players is 80% of the total number of purchases.
I'm thinking of ways to identify this type of player and market exclusively to them.
>>
>>555241065
The only thing that matters is if popular streamers/youtube channels "glaze" your game. But how? Do you just send them an e-mail with a code for the game, the popular guys certainly don't read their entire inboxes. I'm not even sure how to convince those big channels to take a look into a game by nobody.
>>
>>555240684
>>555241202
They've already done the market analysis on this type of player and turns out they just collect games more so than play them

>>
Ouch.
>>
>>555241257
You usually start out with smaller channels and hope those cover you, and then after that you hope that the viewers of those smaller e-celebs tricke up to bigger ones and shill your game to them.
>>

They actually take more than $300k. I'm pretty sure they pay THEIR OWN VAT and taxes at your expense (lol) so the total cut ends up being closer to a full half, like $495k or something. I have an insane game feature idea that I'll never use. It applies ideally to a massively multiplayer game like Ark or Rust. There will be no preset races, stats, abilities, passives, etc. Instead that's all procedural. When a server first comes into existence, the first 50 players to join will become "race founders" and be able to highly customize their character with custom stat modifiers, abilities (using a custom ability creator), traits, racial appearance, etc. In this game you can mate with other players and have kids and new players join as one of your kids. Your kid is the same "race" as you and matches your stat modifiers, abilities you created, etc. However this is where gradual evolution kicks in, if you join as a kid, over your lifetime by leveling up etc you gain points used to modify your character, at the end of your lifetime maybe you were able to deviate 30% from your racial template. If you then have kids they will be 30% different than your ancestors, over enough generations you can create an enitrely new race that didn't exist before, just not instantly like the race founders did. You can create your own unique tribe of people, vastly different stats/appearance/traits/etc. btw none of these races are necessarily human at all, although they're all humanoid, but you can create completely alien races resembling Reptilians or Gray Aliens or Insectoids for example, human was never the foundation, the race founders can create anything whether it resembles a human or not, but it will be humanoid.

Should I bench unity? Every time I ask for information or help I get reddit tier answers and a lot of retardation that I don't know if I want to keep up with. I hate the hub, the whole drama years back and I feel no one gives a fuck anymore.

I liked unity but I don't know if I should keep up with all the bullshit. I don't know if you can use c# in unreal and I feel Godot it's more of the same bullshit, but maybe I'm wrong.

>>
>>555249796
The spyware and the tracking installs thing years back made me lose trust in unity. I don't know what information they collect from you currently and I want to be sure EXACTLY what they are getting or if I can use the editor offline and if they don't track installs.

I wanted to use Wireshark to see what packets are being sent but I'm not sure.

My 2 cents.
I would have been lazy and chosen to animate something that is easier to animate while still looking good.
But I deal with code, I do not deal with art.

>>
>>555250119
you're safer with Unity because it's high profile and under scrutiny than you'd be with some obscure framework that can include whatever it wants in its code without anyone noticing or caring.

This. Changes. Everything.
I know that your last game, Gay Twink Cris Art in Space didn't sell well, but I think you should really commit to animating low framerate cloths in the background of your latest work, Retarded Furry Faggot Twink Garbage in Space.
No matter how much time it takes, you should definitely focus on this instead of improving your character art/anatomy/drawing like anons have been saying for several months.
I really see it. This is it. It's here, it's queer, and it's fucking happening. I can already hear the songs of your praise in reviews:
>Finally an LGBTQIA friendly space-based number game with visual novel features where still images of poorly drawn androgynous bird people display over text. The subtle environmental animations completely immerse me in this vivid world where the dev was obviously cranking it but didnt go so far as to actually make a porn game, instead he made something just gay and suggestive enough to make it impossible for normal people to enjoy while also being too tame for wankers to beat it to.
Yeah. This is based. Uncanny Valley? More like Silicon Valley with the amount of cash you're going to rake in. Based.
>>
>>555250526
I don't know what you mean.
What I was referring to is that the animation of the clothes at the top looks like complete shit and trash, and that an easier target for animation would have been nice. Or some animation approach that is easier to make look good.
What lazy animation approaches are out there?

Cris, I summom thee!

Stuff in a project usually breaks between versions. Nodes types are changed, removed, etc, the devs take a lot of freedom on what they do in between second digit version jumps. There's a few examples. Whenever you update you should spend a lot of time retesting everything. If you never had a problem well let's say you're lucky (or you never noticed that bugs appeared only after you updated). I would only encourage updating if you need X feature or you can verify a bug you're having is fixed in a newer version.

I'm working on side project - tiny website promoting my game, giving a small riddle solved with help of natural language, small taste of the game. I decided to try LLM agent VS Code has been pushing for a while to set up a proper frontend. Never liked that part of the job.
Simple instructions - decent output, with few lines I was able to iron out most of the issues, and then I told LLM about a bug caused by one of the buttons. Little shit initialized a dev run, clicked through the website, managed to pin down the issue and create a solution.
I was blown away. Granted, it's a tiny project with only few files, results were getting worse as the scope grew, but nonetheless it's impressive.

Notch might be right if it comes to serious, complex systems, but in this case AI saved me few days of work. God bless AI.

Oh I am 100% sure Unity keeps your personal data. Why wouldn't they? It helps them develop their product better.

Plus if you make cp with your game they want to be able to track you down and arrest you.

I am pretty sure players cannot track down and open up Unity info. I believe thats why people become engine devs or use a framework instead of an engine to keep their identity private. Its all about trade offs.

If youre not making anything sussy and illegal just use Unity for ease of use.
If you are, make your own engine or use one that doesn't track and doesn't have licenses.

You gotta think in terms of money. Unity loses an important developer if they expose your private info to the public. But they make more money by keeping your info in their db.
>>
>>555249687
All 3 of those engines suck. However Godot has a lot of tutorials that are far more useful than Unity's. With Unity I just find a bunch of very small turorials or some grifters making a tutorials series that gets left undone or is done poorly. Unity seems to have a larger crowd of grifter teachers. Unreal seems non existant so I don't even bother. Godot has it's own special language and working so that's a pass. That only leaves Gamemaker, RPGMaker, and Unity for 2D games. 3D only leaves me with Unity. Gamemaker at least felt simple when I tried it, just looking at Godot and how it works is not reinforcing though it does have some better features than Unity and better tutorials as the youtube space isn't like Unity where it is mostly grifters or low quality teachers that aren't really all that great for learning the engine. Branno himself with his Vampire Survivors clone puts the majority of those 100k subscriber count grifters in their place. Ironic as I've watched a girl with paltry subscriber numbers give good complete Unity tutorials compared to those with a crowd. So yeah the Unity youtube space mostly feels like snake oil salesmen trying to sell you low quality tutorials or the gamedev dream. Btw not too sure on the Godot space since I dont go actively browsing for it.

It just depends on what you want.

I am making mobile game and Unity has the best engine for it. Sure there are other options but they are far less developed. I can spend my time and energy fiddling with an engine or framework or just making my game.

If my game were PC id have other options. If you were doing a 2d game maybe go with monogame. If you were doing 3d do unreal.
Learning a new language (like gdscript or c++) is trivial once you are good at programming. It just really depends on what you want.

at it's core it's actually just fantasy risk of rain with a higher playercount, which was what i had in mind
not for any higher reason, it was just "i want to make my own risk of rain, but i'll try a fantasy theme to differentiate it from risk of rain's alien sci-fi stuff and also give it a higher lobby size because even risk of rain is just more fun with more players"
>>555270457
this is very true. looking at LORT it's an actual studio made up of experienced developers many of which have a similar background as me which is just modding the popular roguelite games such as, surprise surprise, risk of rain
i seriously need to learn to limit and scope properly because my games always explode into forever projects and really if there's a pattern of people always releasing something very similar to what i've already been working on then the originality of the idea might not be the biggest issue, rather the fact that i just take too long?

maybe i'll pivot a bit and try out some of the other ideas i had to differentiate it a bit from this game because while i like the optimistic "holy shit, two cakes!" idea of the consumer, maybe i'll tone down on the roguelite elements a bit and increase the playercount even more?

Not really a matter of model.

It's more like limiting the amount of what the LLM can rewrite and minizing what It can nuke.

So, the trick is to write like a psuedo C, by separating everything into modules, and separating the data inside smaller structs, and then each function into a single script per function.

Ironically by doing this, most of the codebase is blinded from LLM rewriting something and you only allow it to make minimal edits with each prompt.

Another trick is to request the LLM to rewrite the function, because that seems to give the LLM context of what the previous code actually is.

You clearly put effort and overall the scene looks pretty cool but im gonna be blunt

Having something in the background move that much with nothing in the foreground (IE the characters or even any UI stuff such as an arrow or dots telling the player to continue the dialog can be a detriment because the movement of the sails or whatever immediately draws the viewers eyes.

I'm not saying DON'T have animated backgrounds, but just keep in mind that animated visuals are an important tool for telling the player where to look or giving them information.

Around 100 arguments about AI happen on agdg alone EACH DAY.
About 700 arguments in the week around your bait.
AI webm? Low effort social media repost? BOOM thread's done.
Also, not only are you having to deal with every retard that has no game, but the entire backlog of faggots who asked a chatbot to do something for them and it made something better than they could because they're unskilled retards :)

Take all the "thread success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of AI obsessed faggots in agdg who post constantly about AI (again, 100 arguments a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "having a good thread."

Blackpills, 2 weeks, Grok is the closest thing they've had to a gf, AND to top it all off: None of the people who claim that AI is going to take over ever seem to have used it to make a game. If you successfully win this "mediocrity lottery" by baiting the thread into arguing about AI you'll have to so it all over again the next thread

I'm not taking part in this retarded spam "argument" but for anyone that genuinely might want to use AI for coding, just know that it's best if you think of it as a senior/junior programmer thing
As in you're the senior, you ask the intern junior for some code and then you go through what it put together for you and if it's bad, you can either have the junior (AI) fix the issues you found or fix them yourself, or worst case scenario, write the whole thing yourself if it's not working out at all

I mean, try to avoid writing everything in a big class, and keep everything close in the sense that C has methods that are alone and no inside any class.

That way you can keep each method inside a small script.

And keep the data structures on their own small scripts.

The key is to minimize the amount of code the LLM edits on every prompt by shielding the working code into separate scripts.

The other thing is to keep it modular and with a proper architecture (like try to use managers, signals, separate data from logic, etc).

I'm guessing the godloader is just patching an exe file to run the separate malware file on top of the game, using the game's exe as a piggyback so it doesn't get immediately sniped by antimalware. You could do that with just about any exe file so long as you know what language the exe is written in. This is a fault of exe's in general, not godot specifically.

Journey in Azur had style, and didn't look bad, I liked that art. I mostly didn't like the later art, like that of Galduen. Do you really claim that Journey in Azur's art was that bad? It had more soul and was prettier than the average of /agdg/. Clearly better than the 2D art of Guns and Nuns, for instance. Character art worse than Poke ALL Toads, while environments are better than Poke ALL Toads, but Poke ALL Toads is probably also near the top of /agdg/, and the character art of Journey in Azur was likable, clearly more so than most of /agdg/.

Are you envious of Journey in Azur's art?

It was purely a decision made by business execs and they didn't bother to tell anyone else beforehand or even get their opinion. I doubt there's any actual install tracker code in there since they eventually double backed on it.

I know there was a few of you that refused to play until I put out a linux build but with how unity takes A WHOLE HOUR to switch from windows building to linux I wanted to wait till it got enough updates to be stable and good enough for gamers before releasing to linux. Did chip away some progress during these last two snow days to add more player skills. Added a Megaman Zero style ground dash. Works with either double tap forward or holding the dodge button. im trying to make a npc in unity without using navmesh agents, and im stuck.

issue is theres no way to determine when the npc has reached a point along the path, the only way i could think of was by checking the distance from the point but its too inaccurate and fucks up jumping.

anyone have any clue as to what the solution for my mathmatical conundrum may be?
>>
>>555306232
>anyone have any clue as to what the solution for my mathmatical conundrum may be?
yeah download Godot
>>
>>555306232
Yeah—don’t check distance. Check whether the NPC has passed the waypoint.

The standard fix is a dot-product / segment test, which is jump-safe and frame-accurate.

Best solution (robust)

Treat each path segment as a line and detect when the NPC crosses the waypoint plane.

Vector3 toTarget = target - transform.position;
Vector3 segmentDir = (target - previousPoint).normalized;

// If dot < 0, we've passed the target
if (Vector3.Dot(toTarget, segmentDir) < 0f)
{
AdvanceToNextPoint();
}

Why this works:

Doesn’t care about jump height

No magic distance thresholds

Frame-rate independent

Works even at high speed

>>555306656
>Yeah—don’t

I only need to make a basic window loop, a function to load sprites, a player class that is just a struct with basic pos, vel and other data, a character manager that loops the avatars, a character factory, an enemy class, an enemy factory, a GUI class, a camera class, and a renderer manager, an input manager, an scene manager, and a level which is nothing but a quadtree, and a ysort algo function, a 2D tilemap which is just a 2D array of 2D tiles, and a physics collision which is nothing more than a BPD tree.

This can be done in like 3-4 days of work.

Do you really have no passion for games? why are you here? there's easier hobbies that make more money than gamedev, they just lack the lottery winning element
>get a job where I am paid the bare minimum and I have to interact with normies all day?
there are more autists with jobs than you realize. some jobs are composed entirely of such people.

I had passion for games but I have had it slowly winnowed away by the passage of time and very lackluster output. Imagine 15 years of trying to be a dev and procrastinating 90% of the time instead and the best things you have made are a breakout clone and a really basic shmup.

how have you not released your game yet? you constantly get really close to finishing, get distracted by a minor issue, and all of a sudden you've regressed back to being halfway finished.
