need an animation for ascending and i've come to a dead end. if it was something simple where the player interacts and the screen fades out to the next floor, it'd be easy. but i need something that moves other stuff up, meaning the player can watch it move. yes an elevator can work but that requires a closed off space to create the illusion of movement but how do i do this in an open space where that trick won't work? i need something else and so far all methods i've tried suck. one looks like it just disappears row by row once it hits an invisible point decided as "going to the next floor" the alternative is making it literally just fly to the top of the map and disappear once outside the camera's viewing range which also looks bad.

Its easier if you are using something like Unity because then the ai can just handhold you through the entire process using the multitude of forums posts and videos out there made by Unitards. Yes if you are a hotshot you can do it in raw C code but you have to be more honest about your skill level. At the end of the day remind yourself that some jap somewhere cram coded this feature over his "lunch break" for some DS game 12 people played, to put things in perspective. You can do it if you make use of the modern tools available to you.

I already gave a clue but it's at the legal part, when you can use the intellectual property. If I could release my mods I've made over the past decades as a game and sell them without being used I would've already. GZDoom is fine because id Software isn't litigious and they, well mostly Carmack pressed the company to do so to release the source code for it. Most Valve games are mods or started out as mods too.

Level editors are retarded and a waste of time. If someone really wanted to make custom levels for your game they would go out of their way to do it and rom hack the game to make their own levels like how people do with super mario 64 regardless of the devs never putting out level creation tools.

If your game isn't considered a legendary game like mario 64 you may as well NEVER waste dev time on useless time sinks for something 1-3 people making dog shit levels would make. The guy whose passionate to hack your game to make his own content would probably be the only one who makes custom player content thats worth playing too btw. If you waste time to make a level editor only 10% of the playerbase might use it and 95% of their content would be worse than the dev just a sea of ignored trash by everyone.

put it on PC/steam with workshop support because the MARIO IP is good enough to gain traction and justify custom player content; and give it player hosted servers so it never dies (like all games did in the 90s and 2000s) and the company doesn't have to pull servers that host the custom level lists to get content from forever; and the game lives forever the opposite of what nintendo did with that game.

locked to console and dedicated servers for getting your player made content being the only option is so stupid. Thats just asking to die in 6 months or the consoles life span tops even on the switch or switch 2 the goal should be to have a product that works forever and can be sold forever.

I love VR but I hate; facebook it was way better when it was PC gamer focused but there was a trade off when facebook dominated the space that money making from a general mass of normal fags like my dad who are willing to buy a standalone headset and play VR games is bigger than PC gaming VR.

I just hate how as soon as that happened I stopped being inlove with VR like I used to be; the quality of most VR games dropped so hard just to run on mobile hardware inside of quest headsets and 90% of them are PVP slop or single player roguelikes on tiny levels with bad (but optimized) graphics.

A good example is I really want DARK SOULS 1 but it can be indie; with seemless co-op made from the ground up for VR something like that. A real game and is perfect in single player or co-op; and vr devs don't wanna do that; they wanna make tiny levels that run on mobile hardware and mostly pvp games where players fight eachother with lag, laggy tracked avatars or hacking I literally was really into ghosts of tabor for a bit and had to drop it when a hacker flew across the area and killed me instantly with infinite health.

No, since AIs dont think but people do. Things like "push boulders on certain location" are nearly impossible for Claude since it cannot formulate a solution independently: its training data (the instructions people give") is just "push boulders on goal" assuming its obvious what to do. Nobody (or so few it gets lost in LLM highest-likelihood algorithm) writes those instructions as "be on southern side of the boulder, then move up up right up left left up left down down".

Thus, Claude regurgitates "I have to push this boulder to progress" but has no idea how to achieve that. It cannot understand how its movement inputs and boulder movement is related, because it doesnt think, it just writes answers that look like it does.

My game is fantasy but features real-life illnesses because the game simulates things like player nutrition. With real illnesses player has easier time recognizing cause and effect: "my guy got scurvy and is now dying if I dont cure it. It might be because I didnt bring any fruits with me?" is much clearer than "my guy got Orcmouth and is now dying if I dont cure it. Wtf why? And how do I avoid it? ". The game also has tons of things to include when planning so I'm trying to reduce the initial information overload. The first gameplay loop (preparation) is akin to Dwrf Fortress' preparation phase: you got more useful skills and items than you can bring with you, so you gotta prioritise.

Bonus round: The race you set off with sets difficulty (and starting location). Humans are unlocked by default and the average option. If you fail your first game, it unlocks Elves (easy, some buffs), then Dwarves (very easy, tons of buffs). If you win, you unlock Kobolds (hard, some issues like they are sickly and poor) then Orcs (very hard, tons of issues and they start with bad health/morale).

Ignore images not being consistent in graphical style, they are placeholders just to have something other than empty boxes. I got a friend working on graphics.

Forge Industry:
Weird controls: Alt+right click to rotate camera. Middle click pans camera.
I have swapped my escape and capslock key (I use vim on my linux side, and I keep the habit of using these keys on my windows dualboot). The game doesn't read input in a way that recognizes this. I must use the incorrect key to open the menu, and doing so causes windows to toggle caps lock.

I failed the tutorial 2 times (ran out of gold because I hadn't set up an economy loop). The tutorial does not mention how to gain gold.

The entire game revolves around setting up routes. The routes interface is quite bad. I must select the buildings first before selecting the materials. I cannot select a material when a building does not have the material in its inventory.
I reached a point where research required copper bars. I could not simply set up a route to bring copper ore to the Refinement station, move the copper ingots to the Forge, and then move the copper bars to the "Artificers Artilier" (research building). The Refinement station did not already have copper ingots in its inventory, and thus I could not move copper ingots to the Forge. I would need to first create a temporary route to get a copper ingot in the Refinement station, and another temporary route to get a copper bar in the Forge. Absolute tedium.

The material selection dropdown is very cramped and totally linear. It's necessary to scroll through the list. Why couldn't the dropdown be a grid?

It took me a while to realize I can move buildings which have already been placed. All of the default buildings can be moved right next to eachother.

The game sometimes stalls on saving. All of the workers stop in place. I didn't pay attention closely, but it seemed the game was paying their wage even when they were doing nothing. Choosing "save game" seemed to cause this problem, but exiting to the main menu and resuming with "continue" worked (until it didn't). I quit when the thing froze during an auto-save.

Great idea! I'm actually already implementing this as we speak. Party morale and health values are tracked. Lower morale will swap the face from happy to neutral to angry. Lower health will swap character sprite from normal to slightly ragged to very ragged (like in your picture). The average of both will cause the background to change from green to gray to red. Critical issues like very low morale, very low health or serious illnesses change background to red right away.

The values are already tracked and the framework is implemented, but changes are not yet visible besides color (which cannot be seen because placeholder images are full square sprites, not face portrait cutouts). Here's a screen depicting the overview of your party. The lower right part of the screen is empty as I'm still working on this component.

I know this is ragebait post, but accessability presents a genuine conundrum. You want to maximize potential pool of customers. If your game is only targeted to people familiar with said genre, you cut out massive amount of first-timers (to gaming or said genre). However if you design the game to be as accessible as possible, it means your game will be so easy even people who struggle to move both thumbs at the same time can play it, cutting out the more experienced market segment.

Ideally you'd make the game you want to and ask if player "wants to turn on accessability options" that would make the game braindead (like in this case turn off rubble falling animation so you can take your time), but that would essentially double the game mechanic development cost.

I think i have 2x more time on my shitty ui in pygame than i do in game mechanics but i can see the end of the UI tunnel. Rects make sense once you get to know them. Tile resource system done, recruitment screen done, assignment screen done, orders screen done. Commanders can move with units.Figuring out the arc was a fun adventure. Most the story and art so far is for the tutorial starting out with neutral units and building a good enough army to capture the goblin duchess in your dungeon and take control of the goblin nation who will show you the magic of traveling to other worlds. Art on a 3090 is breezing along way faster than i thought, i thought i would only be able to do still images for the unit girls but i should have multiple 5+ second clips for every unit not just the main cast. A bunch of things went wrong this morning. I somehow forgot to buy things that were on my shopping list and I had to go to the store a second time. I had an accident in the kitchen and had to spend 20 minutes cleaning. Why are some mad about Steam getting sued for apparently actually forcing prices to not be lower on other store fronts unless they want to get kicked off the Steam store front. Pretty much yes AFAIK (unitydev here). If you go for low poly just the normal diffuse is fine. If you go high poly you can bake the normalmaps, occlusion maps and so on from (ridiculously higher and more detailed) polygon model, but that adds extra steps. Not difficult, just time-consuming.

Sounds you got it pretty much down. Animations should be basic clips that you call from Godot, yes. No idea how Godot handles it though. There's also likely some minor issues (like having to set default z-axis from positive to negative) when exporting the file from Blender, but you can do all that with export options. Once you find which settings work it'll always work.

That's done in Blender, right? How does that work btw? Do you first make a high polycount model and then basically remake it as a low polycount one? Then blender with some magic takes detail from the higher poly model into a texture?

Because we needed something unique to separate us from just any other game jam. Ironically, look at that global game jam I listed. Just a prompt is ok but allowing some chaotic requirements I think adds a little more fun.
