You can still get a satisfying game experience in S3&K (i.e play all the levels and use all the characters who mostly play the same and have alternate routes for each level) without getting any of the Emeralds, you just miss out on a single supersonic boss at the end. While the Adventure games force you to commit to more radically different playstyles to get the full story of that game. Heroes goes in the opposite direction of Adventure, but it also overstays its welcome and treats the other teams like difficulty settings rather than new ways to engage with/time attack an established level design like S3&K.
