Games like FFIV and Chrono Trigger are movies that are perfectly 1hr and 30min long. Becoming most noticeable beginning in the PSX era, they started making games that were "3 hours" or longer, just because now they could. It's a philosophy that still pervades us even today, except now the directors are more like "the game is a 3 hour long movie that lost the pacing less than halfway through, but you can also make the movie 6 hours long if you enjoyed the slop we put out that much". At least with regards to AAA RPGs. Indies and games like platformers don't have this issue so much. You know I'm right. Perfectly paced games, ~20 hours to beat. What do they have in common? They're both on the SNES. They're 40, 50, 60, 80, even 100 hours. If a game is 80 hours, even if a game is 40 hours, half of it is going to be bloat with terrible pacing. So I just finished playing through rebirth for the first timeMixed emotions. The game had so much filler. So many unnecessary side quests that triggered my autism. Besides, the Nier raid in XIV is just completely ignorable bullshit. I haven't seen whatever Japanese stage play, and I had a perfectly fine experience with Nier and Automata. I also played Re[in]carnation for a few months, and I thought some of the stories were neat but I don't really see how it was connected to Nier, unless maybe they started doing some real tie-ins closer to EoS. You can play Automata independently of Nier (Replicant/Gestalt) and still understand everything. Character's identities in battle are more with limit breaks or specific equipment being more tied to characters. Giving materia to Yuffie or Cait Sith doesn't really take away from their identity in battle.
