After finishing Pillars of Eternity, I genuinely do not understand why people think RTwP is bad or want every CRPG to be turn based. It really isn't THAT hard to learn and I like how it avoids the problem of everything being killed before enemies have a chance to react unless you use OP crowd control abilities like the Ciphers AoE prone. I can't imagine playing that game with turn based and just looking at some beta footage, I don't see the appeal at all. I say this as someone who preferred playing turn based for a long time. I like how there is actual attrition even though I don't like the limited camping supplies.

For the average player playing vanilla on core rules should be fine. There are other good mods if you want to tweak certain underwhelming kits or add some extra romances. But I wouldn't consider any of that essential. Maybe, Rogue Rebalancing if you know you love rogues and bards. But even then, Rogues and Bards are good without mods if you know the right kits to choose.

I imagine you're going to argue that a theoretically complex enough branching tree for a VN could sorta duplicate the exploration portion of those games or another CRPG. But the fact of the matter is that they don't. At least not the games people usually mean when they say "visual novel." And the game world and the exploration it offers are important. In fact RPGs that just have Combat, Dialogue, and no exploration tend to get called tactics games. Good CRPGs usually have all three of Combat, Exploration and Dialogue. VNs Have Dialogue, with perfunctory exploration and, zero or perfunctory combat. I think you could argue that a CRPG with poor combat might be better off being a narrative adventure game like Disco or Pentiment. But that's still pretty different from a VN.
