Progress: I added more frames by replacing blood particles with baked textures and I got rid of all expensive GPU -> CPU operations during gameplay. Only real drawback is that gunshot blood splats aren't rotated with the direction of the hit anymore but you gotta break a few eggs.

After 2 years of attempts, I finally discovered a workflow to make cheaply HD anime assets.

It's actually stupidly simple.

You paint the model using a 98x98 texture, using blender or unionbytes.
Then you put that texture into HQ4x filter, look up any website that do it.
That will create a vectorized version.
Upscale to 1024x1024 in aseprite.
Then just polish using blender pixel art brush, try to make it look better and remove the pixel art blocky look.

That's basically it.

The other thing is to use the Ctrl+E feature of sharpening edges on the subdivision modifier to smooth the low poly edges.
And then add a custom NPR toon shader that sets the texture normal colors to a darker more blueish texture, you can modify the texture to generate the shadow colors on Krita or GIMP.

And set up freestyle as last step.

That's it.

So when I was 14 I went to community college, and at 18 I had a degree in classic and poetry, I was enchanted by philosophy though so I did a masters in philosophy by 20. I don't know how but somehow I am doing a PhD in mathematics now.
I can teach classes to students, do research in mathematics, but if you asked me to make progress on my game I'd start seething and malding.
I've been called a genius by normal people, but actually I don't even think I'm a genius, I think I'm just not totally illiterate. Like most people, seriously like 99% of the world, don't even know what mathematics actually is. I've come to this point through my pursuit of being curious.
But suppose I was a genius, then why can't I make a game?
Being very smart and very creative or even seriously curious is not what makes a game.
What makes a game is the same thing whichever drives a carpenter or auto mechanic. Now that doesn't mean they're smart enough or creative enough to make something good, nor otherwise, but there is a reason a genius like me can't be shitted to make a game, and it's the same reason I can't be fucked to change my own brake pads. I can't be fucked.
Specifically I don't want to read the docs, I don't want to test, basically I'm saying not only do I not want to wipe my ass, I don't even want to know where my ass is, oh but I do be shitting.

To be fair its a bit of a silly question. If I could release the game I would but its not finished. But the reverse is true, BokuDev put years and years of work into Bokube after the Kickstarter. And then did the wrong opposite of Cris among other things, but that's besides the point. BokuDev didn't deliver on time, but that is normal for Kickstarter games, like Underspace, and BokuDev basically published a full game version of Bokube a few years ago, that he could justifiably have sold right there and then, but released it free to download. A little bit scammy regarding the deadline, but all things considered, far from a fullblown scam.

So you can quit your day job and work fulltime on the game, like with having a publisher but better. But you have to ask for a real amount of money to cover 2 years of living expenses and this became less common the more devs went to KS.

More and more devs started doing the opposite of seeking real funding instead started trying to cash out on a few thousand dollars and pretend it was going towards living expenses to work on the game.

That's what bokudev did, but he continued to tell everyone the kickstarter money was so he could afford to work on the game and not wageslave. He has been talking about "escaping wageslaving" for the past 10 years while really refusing to actually commit to the game or seek real funding.

He feels absolutely nothing about the money he collected and spent in a few days, it meant nothing to him. He is the opposite of what kickstarter indies were supposed to be. Literally treating it like a piggy bank to raid for a few easy dollars.

I think hollow knight is actually a good example, and this is why you need to fucking play games even while you're making your own, it has E number of number, D number of traversable terrain, X amount of lore and character depth, G amount of gameplay mechanics. All of those things interact with each other so an upper bound is the product of each those numbers: EDXG, lets define this number as Game Number; and it has a price of P.
Now for how much proportion your game has of relative Game Number, for this game say it's like 10%, that's the product value in comparison.
So his game only have like one dollar and 50 cents worth of product value.
Now that's just a tool I made up for the sake of relative comparison. In general even if your actual comparative product value is only $1.50, you should NEVER release an indie game for less than 5 dollars or 4.99 outside of sales.

GDExtention is exactly as fast as modules. Any slowdown typically comes from if you need to interface to the SceneTree, since that needs to happen on the main thread. Any processing happening purely on a server singleton will run as fast as if it was its own bare C++ program.

A friend playtested my game, and he said he didn't feel any reason to keep playing because he wasn't unlocking anything. To quote him "I like when the first few rounds in a roguelike I just lose unlocking stuff"

You should focus more on the "he didn't feel any reason to keep playing" part. The player must feel they are improving between every play and/or discovering new things.

This is a major problem in all my games. They have a cool first play but no reason to keep playing tomorrow or even after a game over or reaching end game.

fixed the flicker
turns out in my new physics engine i made (https://github.com/redinator2000/kintematic)
I made it so that a point on the edge of a rectangle counts as not colliding.
so the flicker is from the mouse being perfectly in between the two bounding rectangles of the tiles.
Fixed the "find tile and mouse position" function by adding a backup search that uses a tiny rectangle mouse instead of a point

I liked the guy who posted indie games from Steam that looked decent but didn't perform well every day. It was a good reference point for my own, since I don't have time to sift through all the shovelware myself.
Games like Mewgenics though are beyond the scope of starting indie devs so the data is irrelevant to us, we don't have millions of dollars and a big team. It'd be like Posting Risk of Rain 3 or something and saying "woah look at how this indie game performed".

Working on a service oriented game engine with explicit DI.

The idea is that when you rig the engine up, you know exactly which services your game uses, and which components use them.
It also allows for contiguous batch processing without going full retard ECS cult.
Everything is opt-in. There's not even a global "world" state. There are "actor" structs but hypothetically speaking you could make your own base class, give it a service, and have it interact with all the actors in the game, because none of the other systems (like rendering and collision) assume actors, either. Just handles into their services.
